In his first year as skipper of the Eagles he lead the 2016 team to the FHSAA 4A State Championship, allowing him to earn honors as 4A Coach of the Year given by Florida Dairy Farmers, 4A-7A Co-Coach of the Year in Broward County. It could be summarized as a magical season in which 20 players bought into a vision that winning was not enough, that our love for one another and our effort on the the field would glorify Jesus Christ. The Chemistry that was created pushed the team individually and collectively to not only achieve a tremendous team accomplishment but also earned some individual honors such as 4A Player of the Year (Max Guzman), Broward County Offensive Player of the Year (Max Guzman), Broward County Pitcher of the Year (Christian Scott)
Prior to 2016 season, Coach Kunkel served as an assistant coach for Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale working specifically with hitters and catchers. Prior to moving to south Florida three ago coach Kunkel served as an assistant coach for Seminole State College working primarily with catchers and hitters during the spring of 2012. Before taking a college job Coach Kunkel served seven seasons (2005-2011) as head baseball coach at Orangewood Christian School in Maitland, Florida, Coach Kunkel accumulated a record of 134 wins and 83 losses, seven straight playoff appearances including two straight state finals appearances in 2011 (30-2) & 2010 (22-8), 2 regional titles and 3 district championships. The 2011 team set the state of Florida home run record with 83 home runs on its way to the state finals in Port St. Lucie. In seven years as head coach, Kunkel was privileged to coach 27 players that went on to play college baseball, and 5 MLB draft picks.While coaching at Orangewood, coach Kunkel has had the opportunity to coach in the Florida Collegiate Summer League as hitting/infield coach for both the Altamonte Springs Snappers (2007) and the Sanford River Rats (2008). The 2007 Altamonte Springs Snappers finished runner up in the league tournament with a 6-0 loss to the Leesburg Lightning at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Coach Kunkel played collegiate baseball at Glen Oaks Community college before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and playing for ABCA Hall of Fame coach Mike Roberts.
Coach Kunkel is married to his wife of eleven years Raquel and has three girls all who attend CCA, Ava (3rd grade), Stella (1st gade) and Isabella (Pre-K4), Coach Kunkel is grateful for their continued support and love as they have continued to follow him around during his commitment to the ministry platform that the game of baseball has provided.
Junior Varsity Head Coach Alex Norris (2nd Season)
In the last three years Coach Norris has helped coach at both Dunedin High School (Dunedin, FL) and Palm Harbor University High School (Palm Harbor, FL). Coach Norris played his High School baseball at Dunedin High School where he was part of the 2008 5A State Championship team. He went on to play collegiately at Florida Gulf Coast before transferring to Polk State College. He finished his playing career at Florida Southern College where he also earned his Bachelors Degree in Economics.
Alex has been married to his wife Heather since March of 2015. Alex has a heart for coaching, teaching and youth ministry.
