Tough Loss, but So Proud of Our Jags

May 15, 2013 – 04:00 PM

NW certainly beat Wootton in the number of fans.  The crowd overfilled the bleachers so much that they were sent outside the gates to sit!  The grassy lawn up the 1st base line was filled with NW fans!  The game had a good start as Senior Ryan Teachum singles on 2 outs and Junior Brennan Karn walks putting two men on base, but unfortunately are left on base.  Junior Brian Rourke puts up a good fight in the 1st inning, with Catcher Senior Michael Shannon's bullet throw to 2nd for the last out to the player caught stealing.  0-0 after 1.  In the bottom of 2, Wootton makes a jump and takes advantage of the Jags error, putting 2 men on base and then scoring 1.  Top of the 3rd, it looks like Senior JJ Jan will hit a double with a monster hit, but gets tagged out at 2nd.  Holding the score at 0-1.  Top of 4, Senior Michael Shannon hits a monster fly for a single, with courtesy runner sophomore Bradley Berman able to steal to 2nd.  Once again, we get the 3 out, leaving a man on base.  Things are looking bright once again as sophomore Joseph Brauch has a leadoff single.  Sophomore Devon Rosen beats out a bunt, starting to load up our bases.  Once again, the Jags get the outs, leaving 2 men on base.  Brian Rourke holds 'em for 3 innings. Bottom of the 6th, Wootton surprises the Jags with 2 walks and a single - driving in another run.  Jags are down 0-2 now.  Top of 7, Wootton's new pitcher seems to be having trouble, walking senior Anthony Vattuone  followed by sophomore Joseph Brauch.  It looks like the Jags are going to go with history and start to give us that cardiac feeling they always do, but unfortunately for today, the cards weren't  with the Jags today.  3 outs - leaving 2 men on base.  The Jags lose 0-2.  It was a tough loss, but the Jags played a hard game.  They can be proud of their season.  We need to thank our coaches for teaching our players how to persevere and never give up - all the way to the end.  We need to give our coaches a huge pat on the back for enduring every cardiac play our Jags had - we're glad no one suffered from a heart condition.  We need to be proud of our players - they played with all their heart, making incredible, memorable plays, while breaking school records this season (8 consecutive playoff wins over 2 seasons & 4 consecutive extra inning games over 2 seasons).  We need to thank the parents and the fans - because without them, these games would have been empty.  Thanks for a great season Jags - see you next spring!

2nd Round Playoffs Set Ablaze, as Jags Take Down Blair Blazers 5-3, Advance to 3rd Round Playoffs!

May 13, 2013 – 07:00 PM
Jaguars coming into this game as the thirteenth seed had everything going against them, no home field, less fans and wintery weather while playing under the lights. The only thing the Jags had to count on was the feeling of an earlier season loss. That turned out to be the only thing the Jaguars needed in securing the win. Jaguars first inning at bat looked like the first game going down quick with two outs. Then senior Ryan Teachum starts a two out rally and hits a single to reach first base. Sophomore Brennan Karns hits an RBI single that scores Teachum for the first score. Senior Mike Shannon is walked, advancing Karns to second. Senior Anthony Vattuone strokes a shot to right field scoring Karns and advancing Shannon to third. Sophomore Joseph Brauch singles through shortstop that scores Shannon and advances runners. Sophomore Devin Rosen reaches on error and scores Vattuone and Brauch scores on the error.  The rally ends when sophomore Kyle Boyer grounds out with the Jags leading 5-0 after one inning. Senior JJ Jan on the bump and for the next five innings kept the Blazers at bay scoreless. Jags in the mean time could not cross anymore runs leaving men on bases. Top of the sixth inning, Karn replaces JJ Jan at the mound and shows a little rust walking the first two batters and a base hit. With bases loaded, Blazers practically standing on top of home plate, Karns gives one up by hitting the batter. Unfeathered, Karns proceeds to find his rhythm and get the Blazers to force out at home and at first to end the threat. Going into the seventh, Jags unable to score anymore had to rely of defense to close out the game. Karns back on the mound at the bottom of the seventh inning. Blazers get onboard with one out and gets another onboard by crouching the plate for the HBP. Blazers load the bases with another walk and scores one with a bloop single to left. Sophomore Rourke replaces Karns on the mound and immediately gets the second out on strikes. After being a little amped up, Rourke walks the next batter but was able to get the last out on a fly ball to right field. Jaguars avenge an earlier loss, the 8th playoff win in a row, to win 5-3 and advance to Wednesdays third round playoff game against Wootton, game time 4pm. Jaguars want to thank all the fans who braved the chill in support their team.

Jaguar Tame Cougars in Playoff Opener! Win 4-1 Extending Jaguar Playoff Streak to 7 Games in a Row!

May 10, 2013 – 05:00 PM

Wow, simply amazing! Championship atmosphere, unbelievable fan support, and two potent teams ready to play, not for the Championship, but for a first round playoff game. Our selection out of the hat might have been thirteenth seed but we played like we knew we can, as a top seed! After the seats were filled with respective fan base, our side with our Jaguar Blackout and QO with their Red Army, the game started as expected, a pitchers duel. In the first inning, senior Ryan Teachum and sophomore Brian Karn hit back-to-back singles but were left stranded. With both sides leaving men on bases, through the second inning, QO was able to slip a man home to take the lead 0-1 in the third. Both teams playing hard but not capitalizing on base hits and errors, until the top of the seventh inning when senior Anthony Vattuone reaches first on an error. Sophomore Joseph Brauch with a bunt reached on an error, gave NW two on with no outs. Where have we seen this picture before, start the music! Junior Brian Rourke with a sacrifice bunt moves Karns and Gaines (pinch running for Brauch) to second and third with one out. QO pitcher gets a call strike three and robbed sophomore Devon Rosen's at bat for the second out. Senior Scotty Ardoin at the plate, NW leading batter, couldn't ask for more, was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Than senior JJ Jan walking up to the plate, seemingly surreal one year ago, started to hear chants for another chance to tie the game. If QO pitcher wasn't shaken now he sure was stirred after hitting JJ Jan with a pitch bringing home Vattuone for the tying run. Rourke goes out and shuts QO down in the bottom of the seventh. Jags into extra innings once again! QO brings in another pitcher to face a hot hitting Karn. Karn nails a fastball for a single and takes second on a wild pitch. Shannon follows that up with a nice hit, Jags on the corners. QO gets Vattuone to pop out to right field for the second out. Berman scores on a wild pitch also advancing Shannon to second. Brauch hits a nice grounder and move Shannon to third, Jags on the corners again. Rourke hit a nice SAC fly to center to score Shannon on a nice slide at home. Jags extend the lead to 3-1 with two outs. QO again going to the bullpen to face Rosen. Rosen with a nice at bat to force the walk. Ardoin singles through second base moving runners on base. JJ Jan up to bat hits to short right field, giving the Jags a 4-1 lead. QO was able to close out the inning and had one more shot to make some miracle of their own, down 3, bottom of the 8th. Rourke strikes out the first and second batter and gets the third to hit into a ground out to Ardoin. Game over, the Jag playoff magic is in full effect. Junior Rourke pitched eight awesome innings of baseball that kept QO batters off balance. Another solid defensive performance from the Jags kept QO at bay with runners. Shout outs to some plays of the game, Shannon throw down to JJ Jan to nail a threat of a stolen base, Boyers with a nice over the shoulder catch of a QO bomb for the out and the freight train heading down third base for the score after sliding into the catcher that shook the ball out of his glove - Mike Shannon. That now gives the cardiac jags eight straight playoff wins and four in a row in overtime. Now we move on to revenge our earlier season loss to Montgomery Blair for our second round play.  The game will be at Blair at 7pm.

It Was a Cold and Dreary Day . . . .

May 6, 2013

What happened to spring?  We don't know, but the Jags were forced to play on a chilly and dreary day. Sophomore Joseph Brauch starts out on the mound. 1st up, senior Scott Ardoin singles to right.  Jags fail to score coming up to bat.  Rockville jumps to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.  Joseph Brauch holds them down 3-0 after 2 full.  Top of 3rd, Scott Ardoin singles, senior Ryan Teachum walks, junior Brennan Karn (BK) singles, but all 3 move around on an error!  Senior Michael Shannon singles for an RBI driving in BK.  Joseph Brauch singles, but can't quite get around. The score is tied 3-3. Sophomore Kyle Boyers comes in to pitch, his first varsity inning on the mound.  Senior JJ Jan singles in the top of the 5th, but just can't get around to score.  Top of the 7th, Scott Ardoin singles again followed by Ryan Teachum's walk.  Michael shannon singles and knocks in one more run from Scott Ardoin - an RBI for Michael Shannon.  10 hits from the Jags and only 5 from Rockville, unfortunately leaving 8 men on base.  Final score 4-6 Rockville.

Senior Day Benefits the Jags on this Beautiful Spring Day - Perfect for Baseball

May 4, 2013

On a beautiful sunny, spring day, and with a great Senior Program before the game, all seniors were presented by their parents and honored for all their years in the NWHS baseball program (Scott Ardoin, JJ Jan, Michael Shannon, Ryan Teachum, Anthony Vattuone).  Lots of fans, relatives, friends, alumni, and alumni parents came out to see the festivities.  The game followed beginning with senior Anthony Vattuone throwing 3 scoreless innings and 3 assists. In the bottom of the 3rd Senior Scott Ardoin singles to move sophomore Boyers who walked to 3rd. Senior Ryan Teachum singles to more Scott Ardoin, but can't get him in.  Kyle Boyers scores on a throwing error - Jags up 1-0.  The game begins to turn with Blake getting 2 runs on 3 bunts.  Blake is up 2-1 after 3 1/2.  Junior Brian Rourke comes in to pitch in the at 4 1/2 with a shaky start, but holds Blake down 2-1. Sophomore Joseph Brauch hits a double in the bottom of the 4th, advances to 3rd on a single by sophomore Brennan Karn, but can't get in for the score.    Top of the 5th, senior Michael Shannon throws to sophomore Joesph Brauch, holds the runners, getting the lead runner on 3rd out caught stealing.  Bottom of the 5th, senior Ryan "Rhino" Teachum's infield hustle RBI single scores senior Scott Ardoin after his single, bringing the score to 2-2.  Top of the 6th, Blake player singles, but is caught stealing by a throw from Michael Shannon to Scott Ardoin, stopping Blake again for 1-2-3 outs.  Bottom of 6th, Anthony Vattuone walks, Brian Rourke singles and Devon Rosen gets hit by a pitch - bases loaded.  Scott Ardoin hits for another single for 2 RBIs scoring couresy runner sophomore Bradley Berman and Brian Rourke to take the lead.  Final 4-2.  That makes the NW Jags 10 and 5, two years in a row!  Go Jags!

With senior JJ Jan on the mound, JJ throws a scoreless first inning.  Then  in the top of the 1st JJ Jan and senior Ryan Teachum single.  Senior Michael Shannon singles, driving them in for 2 RBIs.  After an sophomore Joseph Brauch reaches base on an error and 2 walks by senior Anthony Vattuone, the Jags had bases loaded with 1 out on the bottom of the 1st.  Sophomore Kyle Boyers gets hit by a pitch, bringing in another run.  JJ Jan throws another scoreless for the 2nd inning.  With the Jags up to bat, NW score in the bottom of the 2nd as Ryan Teachum singles, Michael Shannon hits a double, and Anthony Vattuone hits a single for an RBI- taking the score to 5-0.  JJ Jan throws another scoreless inning in the 3rd.  A walk by sophomore Thomas Brauch and a walk by senior Scott Ardoin and a steal from a wild pitch gives us runners on 1st and 3rd, then JJ Jan hits a double with for 2 RBIs- Jags up 7-0.  More singles were had in the bottom of the 4th by Joseph Brauch, Anthony Vattuone, and Scott Ardoin bringing in 8 more runs.  JJ Jan pitches a complete game.  Jaguars win 15-1.

The Jags Kept Whitman's Runs Down

April 30, 2013

The game started with a great cause- with Whitman honoring the Wounded Warriors with several Vets in attendance.  All players wore seen in camo jerseys (Jags in black, white & gray).  With junior Brian Rourke on the mound, the 1st inning proved to be a scoreless inning.  In the top of the 2nd, the Jags hit two, a single by junior Brennan Karn and a single by senior Michael Shannon, but just couldn't get around to score.  Brian mows them down striking out two in another scoreless 2nd inning.  Senior JJ Jan bunts for a hit on no outs in the top of the 4th.  Brennan Karn singles, but sophomore Devon Rosen unfortunately gets out at home.  Senior Ryan Teachum singles to bring in JJ Jan for an RBI to tie the game 1-1.  Brian Rourke throws another scoreless inning after 4.  Unfortunately, Whitman hits a homerun in the bottom of the 6th, and even with senior Scott Ardoin's single, the Jags can't get past it, ending with a hard played loss.  With 7 strikeouts, Brian Rourke pitches a complete game.  Final 1-2.

So close to catching up!

April 27, 2013

Anthony Vattuone pitches another scoreless inning in the 5th.  Unfortunately, in the 6th, Poolesville breaks loose and scores a few to keep the lead.  Singles for the day were had by Sophomore Kyle Boyers, Junior Brennon Karn and Senior Anthony Vattuone with a SAC bunt from Senior JJ Jan.

By the end of the 2nd inning, the Jags were only up by 1.  The Jags pull another run in the bottom of the 3rd.  Walter Johnson scores a run - the Jags were only up by 1 again, but in the bottom of the 4th, the Jags score another run.  In the 6th, Walter Johnson manages to squeeze out another run, but the Jags held 'em in the 7th.  Singles by senior Scott Ardoin, sophomore Joseph Brauch, sophomore Devon Rosen, and junior Brennon BK Karn.  2 RBIs by Scott Ardoin, 1 RBI by Brennan Karn, and 1 RBI by senior Anthony Vattuone.  Final 5-4.

NW Loses to Blair at Home

April 22, 2013

After 1-2-3 in the field, senior JJ Jan gets on with a fielders choice, junior Brian Rourke gets on with a walk, junior Brennan Karn hits a single for the first RBI of the game.  Senior Ryan Teachum gets on with a walk, but unfortunately, no more runs come in.  In the bottom of the 2nd, sophomore Joseph brauch gets a hit, but is not able to make it in.  Senior Scott Ardoin also hits for a single, but the Jags can't seem to get around to score.  Finally in the bottom of the 5th, Scott Ardoin walks, followed by senior Michael Shannon's reaching 1st on an error for the  RBI, bringing in Scott Ardoin.  In the bottom of the 6th, there are 2 walks by senior Ryan Teachum and sophomore Devon Rosen, but once again - the Jags don't score.  In the bottom of the 7th, Michael Shannon hits for a single, but the Jags just can't do it to hit him around to score.  Final  2-4.

A Record Breaking 4 Double Plays!

April 20, 2013

It might just be a record for NWHS - 4 double plays in one game!  On a beautiful and sunny day, NW went up against the #1 team, BCC, for a showdown.  With the Jags going into the game with high energy, BCC just couldn't score.  The Jags started out with a bang- 2 singles (by sophomore Devon Rosen and senior JJ Jan), a walk by junior Brian Rourke, a SAC fly by junior Brennan Karn and 2 doubles (by senior Michael Shannon & senior Ryan Teachum) - and that was just in the 1st inning!  Then it was 3 up 3 down for BCC as junior Brian Rourke struck out the #3 batter.  The 2nd inning started a trend that may just go down in the record books.  With bases loaded, a double play started by senior JJ Jan, turned by senior Scott Ardoin, with the out made by senior Ryan Teachum.  This was followed up by 3 more double plays started by Scott Ardoin, turned by JJ Jan, with the outs made by Ryan Teachum - 1 in the 5th, again in the 6th, and then once again in the 7th!  On a double steal sophomore Kyle Boyers stole home 5-0 Jaguars after 3 1/2.  A single by Kyle Boyers in the 4th ended up with a run (JJ Jan's RBI).  With a still scoreless BCC, senior Michael Shannon got on base with a single, leading to an RBI by Brennan Karn's SAC Fly.  Once again, BCC couldn't score in the bottom of the 7th.  Brian Rourke pitched a complete shutout game!  Jags win - Final 6-0.

It's a Beautiful Day!

April 18, 2013

As the Jags walked onto the field, that's the U2 song they heard blasting on the speakers - and a beautiful day it was!  With baseball alum' parents in the stands, they got to see a game at the perfect temperature, the perfect amount of sun, and a scoreboard that showed ups and downs making for a great game.  The start was a leadoff double by Damascus, but with the help of 2 nice plays by Brennan Karn, Joseph Brauch shuts them down. In the top of the 3rd, Jags again hold Damascus as the fail on a suicide squeeze. Brauch 2ND scoreless inning of pitching. With a SAC bunt by Anthony Vattuone, a SAC fly by Joseph Brauch, walks by Ryan Teachum, Kyle Boyers, Micheal Shannon, and Brian Rourke, we then started hitting beginning with a double by Ryan Teachum and a single by Anthony Vattuone resulting in RBIs from both.  The Jags were up 4-3 by the 4th, JJ Jan had a single in the 4th, but unfortunately was left on base.  Damascus tied it up by the top of the 6th, but the Jags had 2 more chances up to bat.  After Another single by Anthony Vattuone,  Kyle Boyers, and Scott Ardoin, knocking in Anthony Vattuone and Devon Rosen, giving the Jags two more runs in the bottom of the 6th, held til the top of the 7th, not needing to go to bat again.  Final 6-4. Jags.

The Jags Play Longtime Rival Quince Orchard

April 16, 2013

The Jags play longtime rival QO and score some runs, but can't quite catch up for the win.  The Jags got runners on base with doubles hit by sophomore Kyle Boyers, junior Brian Rourke, and 2 doubles by senior Michael Shannon.  Brian Rourke hit for the RBI bringing in a run.  Final 2-5.

The Battle of Germantown!

April 11, 2013

It was the Battle of Germantown!  The Northwest/Seneca Valley rivalry was in high form.  Loads of energy was seen on both sides as many of the players have played together at some point of their baseball lives.  There was team spirit seen by both sides with plenty of fans for all.  After the Jag's loss to Seneca Valley last year, they had a vendetta to not let it happen again this year.  However, Seneca Valley had the same goal, but just the opposite - to not lose their trend.  It didn't look as though the Jags were going to triumph this time, because the battle was fierce and the Jags were down most of the game.  With Seneca Valley up by 3 in the 2nd inning, the Jags came back with 2 in the 3rd and another 2 in the 4th.  With Seniore Anthony Vattuone at the helm pitching,  SV wasn't going to let them get ahead, so between the 3rd & 4th they earned 1 and 3, respectively.  With both teams fighting fiercely defensively, there were no earned runs in the 5th & 6th.  In the 7th, with new SV pitchers, NW's bats seemed to wake up, starting with a walk by Seniore Michael Shannon, a single by Junior Brian Rourke, a double by Juniore Brennan Karn (his 2nd of the day), and a single by Senior Ryan Teachum.  The final RBI was knocked in by Sophomore Kyle Boyers with a single - the Jags earning 4 runs total at the end of the top of the 7th.  With Seniore JJ Jan pitching and with no errors in the bottom of the 7th, the Jags held the Cougars 8-7 to win the game.  3 singles were had by Scott Ardoin, 2 by Brennan Karn, and 1 each by Kyle Boyers, Ryan Teachum, and Anthony Vattuone.  Victory was felt by all.

Nothing Could Stop The Jags!

April 9, 2013

The game ended after 5 innings.  With Clarksburg only scoring 1 run in the 2nd, The Jags were up for the entire game and nothing could stop them.  Seniore Scott Ardoin and Junior Brennan Karn both had doubles and singles included Scott Ardoin, Senior JJ Jan, Brennan Karn, Junior Brian Rourke, Senior Michael Shannon and Senior Anthony Vattuone.  RBI's included Scott Ardoin, Brennan Karn, Junior Brian Rourke, Michaeal Shannon, Senior Ryan Teachum and Anthony Vattuone.  Final score 11-1.

And This is How We Do It!

April 8, 2013

This is the type of game we can say "This is how we do it!"  Once again, NW was up then down and the ending looked bleak.  Then in historic Jags style, in the bottom of the 7th, the Jags came back to tie and then win the game 6-5!

The game started slow with no runs until the bottom of the 3rd.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Sophomore Devon Rosen hit a flyball - the first single of the day, Sophomore Thomas Brauch hit the 2nd single followed by Sophomore Kyle Bowers' walk.  With 2 players on base, Senior JJ Jan hit another single, knocking in 2 runs. When Wootton scored 5 runs between the 4th and 5th innings, that's when things looked bleak, but then it looked like the Jags might catch up in the 5th.  In the bottom of the 5th, it looked like the Jags could stir things up when JJ Jan's double knocked in Senior Scott Ardoin for another run.  The Jags started to pick up steam in the 6th with flyball singles by Junior Brian Rourke and Senior Ryan Teachum, but the players couldn't make it home.  Then in the bottom of the 7th - that's when the heat really turned to fire when Kyle Bowers walked, followed by 3 consecutive singles by Scott Ardoin, JJ Jan, Micheal Shannon, and finally Brennan Karn, knocking in 3 more runs to win the game 6-5.

Jags Had the Lead - Twice -Against Gaithersburg - Game went into Extra Innings

April 4, 2013

Northwest had the lead twice during the game, extra innings were played, but in the top of the 8th, Gaithersburg prevailed by scoring 2 more runs.  NW took the lead by 2 in the 2nd inning and retook the lead again in the 6th after an error and 3 consecutive singles (by Brian Rourke, Brennan Karn and Anthony Vattuone) allowing 2 runners to score.  Singles for the day included Scott Ardoin, JJ Jan, Brennan Karn, Devon Rosen, Brian Rourke, and Anthony Vattuone.

Jags Beat Watkins Mill 13-0 in 5 Innings of play!

March 22, 2013
The weather was more cooperative today, where we felt a little warmth from the sun. In the first inning of play, the Jags sent ten batters to the plate and scored five runs. Junior Joseph Brauch made his first start on the bump for 2013. Brauch was able to pitch three strong scoreless innings with balanced pitching. The Jags were able to score two more runs in the 2nd inning and four more in the 3rd. The Jags were able to get balanced hitting from top to bottom and saw sophomores, Donnie Gaines and Devon Rosen get their first hits as varsity players and for Josh Levy making his first appearance covering behind the plate. Replacing Brauch was senior pitcher Anthony Vattuone and junior Brennan Karn each pitching one scoreless inning. The Jags closed out the game scoring two more runs in the 4th inning and no runs in the 5th. Defensively we saw Brauch with a nice pick off to first and senior JJ Jan with a nice double play. Kudos to Jags for only allowing 15 batters to the plate, Karn for hitting a double and a triple, and to Brauch for the win.  Next up will be a spring break game against Sherwood this coming Wednesday at 10am.
