The DVBL and community was saddened to learn about the passing of Charlie Runge. For those of you who didn't personally know him, Charlie was a 6th grader at the Holland Township School and was an excellent student. Charlie was active in sports and played D.V.A.A. Little League, Holland Soccer and DVBL Basketball. He enjoyed reading, especially mysteries, swimming, gardening with his father, and fishing with his brothers. He enjoyed summer camp at the Riegel Ridge Community Center. Charlie was a kind and caring boy and was loved by many.
In the DVBL Charlie always exhibited good sportsmanship and team spirit. He walked everywhere with a smile, and he loved to make his friends laugh. When he scored a basket, the gym would light up. He was an unselfish player with a big heart and great attitude, and he always exhibited kindness to others. As one parent described, Charlie would wait for my son after every practice and game so they could walk out together. He always encouraged him and never seemed to care that my son was younger than him. Charlie would be the first player to partner up with the player who had no one. He was a one of a kind kid and irreplaceable.
In his honor, the DVBL has created the Ultimate Teammate Award for the player who best exhibits the qualities of sportsmanship, team spirit, perseverance and kindness.
