Wayland-Cohocton 7 - Aquinas 4

June 5, 2012
The Aquinas baseball season came to an end today with a 7 - 4 loss to Wayland-Cohocton at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia.  Aquinas jumped to an early lead scoring one in the top of the first when Tommy Mastrodonato walked, was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Josh Hanna, and scored on an infield throwing error from a Ben Knauf hit ball.   W-C came back to score one in the second to tie the game, then scored two in the third and another in each of the next two innings to take a 5 - 1 lead.  Aquinas scored one in the sixth when Max DeNora singled, advanced to second on a Knauf walk, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on an errant pick-off attempt at second.  But W-C came right back and put two more on the board. In the top of the seventh, Aquinas put up a late rally with two outs when Reagan Morrow walked, Mastrodonato was hit by a pitch, and Hanna singled to load the bases.  Max DeNora followed with a single to score two, but the rally came to an end a little short.

Andrew Lambiase started on the mound for the li'l Irish - on a moments notice that the planned starter would not be able to play, and did a good job.  He was relieved by Ben Barrow who threw well through the later innings.

Max DeNora 2 for 4 (2 RBI), Ben Barrow 1 for 3 (RBI), Josh Hanna 1 for 3

Aquinas 4 – Penn Yan 2

June 2, 2012
Aquinas won their fifth sectional championship today behind a great team effort led by the pitching of Tommy Mastrodonato.  Mastrodonato pitched a complete game, scattering 5 hits and striking out 9 while yielding only two unearned runs.

Penn Yan scored one run in the bottom of the third, but Aquinas came right back and scored one in the top of the fourth.  Ben Knauf led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second on a nice bunt by Andrew Lambiase, and scored on an error hit by Ben Barrow. Penn Yan scored another run in the bottom of the fourth, but Aquinas came back and scored two more in the fifth. Cory Benedetto reached first on an infield error, was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Mastrodonato and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice.  Max Denora walked, and Knauf hit a routine fly ball in the outfield that was misplayed scoring Benedetto and advancing DeNora to third. Lambiase walked to load the bases.  Will Leonardo drew a walk which brought home DeNora.

In the sixth, Aquinas added an insurance run when Matt Coppa was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Benedetto.  Mastrodonato walked and Josh Hanna earned an infield single with his speed to load the bases. DeNora hit a fly to center which scored Coppa.  Mastrodonato, the game’s MVP, closed the door on Penn Yan in the sixth and seventh to earn the Championship.

Aquinas scored two more in the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh.  Tommy Mastrodonato started the pitching for Aquinas throwing 4 strong innings to earn the win.

Aquinas 14 - Hornell 1

May 25, 2012
Aquinas traveled back to Hornell for their quarter-final game vs. #3 seed Hornell, and they started off just like they left the game there the week before, taking a lopsided victory 14-1 to advance to the semi-finals in Class BB.  AQ scored one in the first when Tommy Mastrondonato walked, advanced to third on back to back singles by Josh Hanna and Taylor Byrne, and scored on Max DeNora's fielder's choice.  In the top of the third, AQ blew the game open scoring six more.  Mastrodonato doubled to lead off, followed by consecutive errors that put Hanna and Byrne back on the bases and plated Mastrodonato.  Byrne stole second and Hanna broke for home on the throw and beat the return throw to the plate with his speed.  DeNora walked, and Ben Knauf and Ben Barrow reached base on two more errors that scored two more, followed by a walk to Will Leonardo, and another base reaching error to Mastrodonato scored the final two of the inning.
In the bottom of the third, Hornell scored their one run on a double and single.

AQ was back to runs in the fourth when three consecutive walks to DeNora, Knauf and Barrow loaded the bases, and Andrew Lambiase singled to center scoring two. A fielder's choice by Leonardo brought home the third run of the inning.  AQ finished the game's scoring in the top of the fifth when they scored four more runs.   Singles by Mastrodonato, Hanna and Byrne started the inning, and a throwing error on a DeNora fielder's choice brought home two.  Knauf was hit by a pitch and Ben Barrow singled to score Byrne.  Another fielder's chocie to Leonardo scored DeNora for the final run.

As good as the hitting and play was in the batters boxes,  the pitching and fielding did their jobs tonight.  Taylor Byrne's pitching was outstanding, pitching five strong innings striking out a season high eleven and yielding only two hits.  Ben Barrow came on to pitch the final two scoreless innings.

Ben Barrow earned first on another infield error and scored when Taylor Byrne tripled to right-center. Max DeNora followed with a single scoring Byrne, followed by a Tommy Mastrodonato walk. Aquinas 15 – Albion 11

April 19, 2012
Aquinas travelled west to Section VI power Albion on a beautiful Thursday afternoon in search of snapping their five game losing streak. The game was scoreless until the third inning when Taylor Byrne homered to deep left field. Two batters later, Max DeNora singled and then scored on a single by Bennie Barrow that handcuffed the outfielder on the pick-up allowing the additional bases. Albion scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game.

In the top of the fourth, Aquinas exploded for thirteen runs when seventeen batters came to the plate. With one out, Will Leonardo’s triple started things off. A controversial runner interference play involving the Albion pitcher and Josh Hanna occurred – Hanna being called out and the Albion pitcher had to leave the game. The replacement pitcher was ineffective, walking five and hitting two batters before singles by Leonardo & Hanna, and another walk chased the pitcher from the mound. Taylor Byrne singled scoring two, followed by another walk, and then a DeNora double scored the final two for the inning. Albion rebounded for two more in the bottom of the fifth and seven more in the sixth when Aquinas relievers had some difficulty of their own. In all, it was a great team effort that put the team back in the win column.
