Pittsford 8 - Aquinas 7, 9 Innings
The Aquinas baseball season ended today in a very tough loss to Pittsford Sutherland, 8 - 7, in 9 innings. The Li'l Irish out hit the Knights, but didn't cash in on a number of opportunities and gave up a few that were used by the home team. Aquinas stranded 16 base runners in the 9 inning game.
Aquinas jumped to an early lead in the top of the first when three back to back to back singles by Trey Brown, Tyler Freedman and Ben Knauf scored Brown. The Knights answered back for 3 in the bottom of the same inning.
Aquinas cut the lead to one in the third when Luke Scorsone walked, and advanced to third on a single by Brown and another walk to Freedman. Dillon Flaherty's single brought home Scorsone. In the fourth, Aquinas jumped into the lead when Armando Rivera singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunted by DJ Berry. Justin Allen singled and consecutive walks to Scorsone, Brown and Freedman scored two. Flaherty was hit by a pitch scoring a third run and Ben Barrow walked plating a fourth, AQ 6 - Pittsford 3.
Pittsford scored one in the bottom of the fifth, but Aquinas recovered that run in the top of the seventh when Scorsone made first on a called third strike that got by the catcher, Brown singled, and Freedman singled scoring Scorsone. The Knights rallied in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at seven, and both teams missed on their opportunities in the eighth.
In the 9th, with one out, Pittsford singled and doubled to bring the winning run home.
Sophomore's James Maddison and Brian Speranza pitched for the Irish, with Maddison starting and going most of the way. Both pitched strong games with good control in their first Sectional action.
Trey Brown 3 for 5 (RBI), Tyler Freedman 2 for 4 (2 RBI), Dillon Flaherty 2 for 4 (2 RBI), Ben Knauf 2 for 5 (2B, RBI), Armando Rivera 2 for 5, Justin Allen 2 for 5, DJ Berry 1 for 4, Luke Scorsone 1 for 4, James Maddison (6 1/3 IP, 8 H, 3 K's, 5 ER)
Class A Playoff Game Announced
Aquinas will play on the road at Pittsford Sutherland in the first round of the Class A playoffs. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, and the game time is 4:30 pm.
Wayne Game Cancelled
The scheduled game between Aquinas & Wayne Central High School that was scheduled for Saturday, May 17th, has been cancelled and will not be made up. Wayne must play a game rained out earlier this week as a part of their HS league games, and can only play that game at the time when the AQ game was to take place. We will post the date & time of the Li'l Irish's next game as soon as the playoff schedule is available.
Aquinas 5 - Rush Henrietta 2
It was Senior Day at Aquinas, but it was a total team effort that led the Li'l Irish to victory over Rush Henrietta High School, 5 - 2. Sophomore James Maddison pitched a complete game, his second in a row, 8th Grader Trey Brown was 3 for 3 with a double, and Senior Dillon Flaherty added two hits and two RBI's.
Aquinas opened the scoring in the first inning when Justin Allen singled, and scored on a Brown's double. AQ's second run was scored in the second when Ricky Lopez led off with a single, was sacrifice bunted to second by Armando Rivera, and scored on and infield error hit by Allen.
RH came back to tie the game, 2 - 2, in the top of the third. In the bottom of the inning, Aquinas regained the lead when Brown singled, Tyler Freedman walked, and both were advanced a base by a sacrifice bunt hit by Ben Knauf. Flaherty's single scored both base runners, AQ 4 - RH 2. Aquinas added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Brown singled and advanced to third on an errant pick-off attempt at first. Knauf scored Brown when he singled to center.
Trey Brown 3 for 3 (2B, RBI), Dillon Flaherty 2 for 3 (2 RBI), Ben Knauf 1 for 2 (RBI), Ricky Lopez 1 for 3, Justin Allen 1 for 4 (RBI), James Maddison ( 7 IP, 6 H, 5 K, W)
McQuaid 11 - Aquinas 6
Aquinas travelled to McQuaid and battled a triad: McQuaid, the weather, and an overturned 3rd out call, and fell to the Knights, 11 - 6.
The game started and was delayed for about an hour after only one batter due to a heavy rain shower. McQuaid scored a run in the third inning, but Aquinas bounced back and put two on the board in the fourth as the rain came back. Ben Knauf singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Dillon Flaherty walked, and Knauf then stole third. The throw to third was misplayed and went into the outfield allowing Knauf to score and Flaherty to reach second. A single by Armando Rivera scored Flaherty. In the bottom of the fourth, Aquinas gave McQuaid six runs as the field got quite wet, three infield balls were misplayed, a controversial 3rd out at first was overturned by the home plate umpire, and the mound turned to mush impacting the ability of pitchers to control location, McQ 7, AQ 2.
The controversial call was particularly damaging, as Aquinas would have gotten out of the inning giving up no runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, the batter hit the ball between first and second. Ricky Lopez played the ball and tossed it to pitcher Ben Barrow who appeared to have his foot hit the first base bag before the runner's foot. In the ensuing collision of the two past the bag, the ball came out of Barrow's glove. The field umpire called the runner out and the Aquinas players left the field, but the Knight coaches appealed to the home plate umpire who overturned the call. In the ensuing delay for clarification to the AQ coaches, the condition of the mound and field became worse, and led to further difficulties in holding the pitcher's plant foot when play resumed.
The Li'l Irish added another run in the top of the fifth when Brian Speranza walked, and singles by Trey Brown and Tyler Freedman brought Speranza home. McQuaid added three more to their lead in the bottom half of the inning and another in the sixth before Aquinas added three runs in the top of the seventh to end the scoring. In the seventh, Justin Allen singled, Joe DeFrancesco walked and Brown hit a single that scored Allen. Freedman and Knauf singled scoring DeFrancesco and Brown.
Aquinas returns home Thursday to face Rush Henrietta at 4:30 and it is Senior Night!
Tyler Freedman 2 for 3 (RBI), Ben Knauf 2 for 3 (RBI), Trey Brown 2 for 4, Armando Rivera 1 for 3 (RBI), Justin Allen 1 for 4.
Batavia 11 - Aquinas 6
Aquinas lost a tough one late when they failed to keep Batavia off the scoreboard in the seventh inning, 11 - 6. That was a disappointing end for the Irish and starting pitcher Max Swartz, who yielded only one earned run over the first six innings.
Aquinas opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Ben Knauf hit the first pitch he saw off the scoreboard in left-center field for his first varsity home run. Batavia came back in the top of the third and scored five runs, all unearned due to misplays in the field. Aquinas rebounded and cut the lead to 5 - 4 by scoring three in the third. Ben Barrow singled, Trey Brown reached first on a fielder's choice, and Tyler Freedman singled to load the bases. A sacrifice fly to center by Knauf brought home Barrow and singles by Dillon Flaherty and Ricky Lopez scored Brown and Freedman. In the fourth, Aquinas scored two more when DJ Berry and Justin Allen singled and Barrow hit a bunt sacrifice to advance the runners. Brown, Knauf and Flaherty each walked which scored Berry & Allen, AQ 6 - 5.
Swartz took control sending the Blue Devil batters down in quick manner in the fourth through sixth innings, but the Devils answered in the seventh when they chased him from the game after one hit, and went on to score six.
Ben Knauf 2 for 2 (HR, SF, 3 RBI), Dillon Flaherty 2 for 2 (2B, 2 RBI), Justin Allen 3 for 4, Trey Brown 1 for 2, Luke Scorsone 1 for 3 (2B), Ricky Lopez 1 for 4 (RBI), Ben Barrow 1 for 4, Tyler Freedman 1 for 4, DJ Berry 1 for 4, Max Swartz ( 6 IP, 7 H, 5 K, 6R, 1 ER, ND)
Aquinas 9 - Greece Arcadia 0
Aquinas came back and won the consolation game of the Rich Pilliter Tournament at Aquinas, 9-0. Sophomore James Maddison pitched a strong, complete game in leading the Li'l Irish to victory. Maddison gave up only 6 hits while striking out 11, to record his first Varsity victory, and Li'l Irish batters connected on 11 hits to provide more than enough for Maddison's excellent outing.
Aquinas opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when DJ Berry singled, advanced to third on walks to Nick Giannavola and Justin Allen, and scored when Trey Brown singled. Ben Knauf doubled to score Giannavola and Allen, and Ben Barrow singled scoring Brown. After a walk to Dillon Flaherty to load the bases, Ricky Lopez singled scoring Knauf. DJ Berry then singled to score Barrow, AQ 6 - 0.
Aquinas struck for three more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Allen walked and was scored by 8th grader Trey Brown's first Varsity home run. Tyler Freedman was hit by a pitch and advanced on Knauf's single. Another single by Barrow scored Freedman.
Maddison ended the game in style by facing only three batters in the seventh and striking out the last two.
Knauf and Maddison were placed on the All Tournament Team.
Trey Brown 3 for 4 (HR, 3 RBI), Ben Knauf 2 for 4 (2B, 2 RBI), Ben Barrow 2 for 3 (2 RBI), Donavan Pecheco 1 for 1, Tyler Freedman 1 for 2, Ricky Lopez 1 for 3 (RBI), DJ Berry 1 for 3 (RBI), James Maddison ( 7 IP, 6 H, 11 K, 0 ER, W)
Canisius 9 - Aquinas 0
Aquinas was stymied by a strong Canisius team in the opening game of the Rich Pilliter Tournament at Aquinas on Saturday morning. The Li'l Irish batters could only muster 3 hits and couldn't put enough together to score - never getting a runner to third base. Aquinas went on to play in the consolation game vs. Greece Arcadia in the early afternoon.
Ben Knauf 1 for 2, Trey Brown 1 for 3, Justin Allen 1 for 3, Brian Speranza ( 6 IP, 5K, 3 ER, L)
Aquinas 6 - Bishop Kearney 4
Aquinas bounced back into the win column on Thursday with a win over rival Bishop Kearney, 6-4. Strong pitching by sophomore starter Max Swartz and relfief from sophomore James Madison, and a 3 run home run by Tyler Freedman locked up the victory. Swartz earned his first Varsity win.
Aquinas opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Luke Scorsone and Trey Brown singled, and were plated on Tyler Freedman's home run over the right field fence. Aquinas extended their lead to 5 - 0 in the bottom of the second. Scorsone singled and made third on a Justin Allen single, and came home on Brown's single. Freedman then singled scoring Allen.
The Kearney Kings got two back in the top of the third, but Aquinas added a single run in the bottom half of the inning. Ben Knauf doubled and advanced to third on an infield out, and was scored on DJ Berry's infield hit that was misplayed.
Kearney added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to round out the scoring. The Li'l Irish pitchers showed excellent control today yielding only one walk while striking out seven, something that has been missing from the staff this season.
The Li'l Irish play at home on Saturday, May 10, at 10 am in game one of the Rich Pillitier Tournament vs. Buffalo's Canisius High School.
Tyler Freedman 2 for 4 (HR, 4 RBI), Ben Knauf 3 for 3 (2B), Trey Brown 3 for 4 (RBI), Justin Allen 2 for 3, Luke Scorsone 2 for 4, Max Swartz (5 1/3 IP, 5K, 2 ER, W), James Maddison (2 IP, 2K, 0 ER, S)
McQuaid Jesuit 16 - Aquinas 1
Aquinas finally had a home game vs. arch rival McQuaid, but were blown out by the Knights, 16 - 1. The Aquinas lone run came in the third inning when Trey Brown walked and advanced to second on a walk to Justin Allen, and third on an infield out, and scored on a fielder's choice struck by Ben Knauf. The only other bright spot of the game was the relief pitching of Joe DeFrancesco who pitched scoreless 6th and 7th innings.
The Li'l Irish will try to turn the ship around today as they host Bishop Kearney HS at 4:30 pm.
Trey Brown 2 for 3 (2B), Armando Rivera 1 for 1, Joe DeFrancesco (2 IP, 0 R, 4 K's)
Varsity Baseball Schedule Changes
The Aquinas Athletic Department and Coaches have announced four Varsity baseball schedule changes that involve two of the past rain-outs and two of the future games on the schedule.
The game at home vs. rival McQuaid has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 7th, at Aquinas. The game time is 4:30 pm.
The game at home vs. Batavia has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 13th, at Aquinas. The game time is also 4:30 pm.
Due to their need to complete their mandatory league games, the game vs. Rush Henrietta has been moved from Tuesday, May 6th. This game at home vs. Rush Henrietta HS is now scheduled for Thursday, May 15th, at Aquinas. The game time will be at 4:30 pm.
The game vs. Wayne has been moved from Friday, May 16th to Saturday, May 17th. This road game vs. Wayne, being played at Wayne Central HS in Ontario, NY, will begin at 4 pm.
Victor 13 - Aquinas 12
Aquinas played yet another road game, this time against Section V's #1 ranked Victor High School. Aquinas got close to pulling off the season's upset, but lost a tough one in the bottom of the seventh, 13 - 12. The Li'l Irish would grab a lead and let it slip away with some sloppy fielding and too many free passes to first, which eventually led to the loss.
Victor took a 1 - 0 lead in the first, but the Li'l Irish roared back for five in the second. Consecutive singles by Ben Barrow, Justin Allen and DJ Berry loaded the bases. A walk to Trey Brown scored one, and Luke Scorsone's single scored another. Tyler Freedman walked and Dillon Flaherty was hit by a pitch, both scoring runs. Ben Knauf's sacrifice fly scored the fifth run. AQ 5 - 1.
Victor came back to score six in the third and chased Irish starter, sophomore James Madison, five of runs being unearned. In the fourth, spunky AQ added two more to tie the game, 7 - 7, when Brown walked, Flaherty singled and both runners advanced a base on a misplay in the outfield. Knauf singled plating both base-runners.
Aquinas scored four more in the fifth when Barrow singled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and passed ball, and scored on 8th grader Brown's double. Scorsone reached on an error, and Freedman doubled scoring Brown. A walk to Flaherty loaded the bases, and Knauf hit a ball to left that was trapped, not called a catch, and scored two, Knauf to second for the double.
Victor came right back in the fifth with four of their own to tie the game at 11 - 11. AQ scored one in the top of the sixth to regain the lead when Allen singled, advanced to second on Berry's sacrifice bunt and third on Brown's single, and scored on a passed ball on a third pitch strike to Flaherty.
Victor tied the game on a run in the bottom of the sixth and added another with one out in the seventh on a suicide sqeeze play to take the walk off win.
Trey Brown 2 for 2 (2B, 2 RBI), Ben Knauf 2 for 4 (2B, SF, 5 RBI), Tyler Freedman 2 for 3 (2B, 2 RBI), Ben Barrow 2 for 5, Justin Allen 2 for 5, Dillon Flaherty 1 for 3 (RBI), DJ Berry 1 for 3, Luke Scorsone 1 for 4 (RBI)
Aquinas 5 - Hornell 2
Aquinas travelled south to Hornell this afternoon and came away with a 5 - 2 win. Senior Ben Barrow pitched a complete game, five hitter, while striking out eight to earn the victory.
Aquinas opened the scoring in the top of the first when Trey Brown hit a lead-off double, advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on a wild pitch. Hornell tied the game in the bottom of the inning and looked like they were going to have a good rally with two on base and one out, but Barrow struck out the next two batters to end the inning. That momentum carried into the top of the second for the Li'l Irish. Ben Knauf led off with a double, followed by singles by Ricky Lopez and Barrow that scored Knauf. Justin Allen bunted safely to first to load the bases, and Lopez was called out trying to score on a passed ball that advanced the other runners. Trey Brown singled to score Barrow and Allen. Aquinas, 4 - 1.
Hornell got one unearned run back in the bottom of the third, but that was all the scoring Barrow and the Irish would yield. Aquinas answered right back in the top of the fourth with one run when Allen made first on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a walk to DJ Berry, and scored on an infield throwing error hit by Brown. Barrow ended rally attempts by the Red Raiders in the sixth and seventh by striking out one & two batters, respectively, with runners in scoring position.
Ben Barrow 2 for 3 (RBI, 7 IP, 1 ER, 8 K's, W), Ben Knauf 2 for 3 (2B), Trey Brown 2 for 4 (2B, 3 RBI), Tyler Freedman 2 for 4, Justin Allen 1 for 3, Ricky Lopez 1 for 3
St. Francis vs. Aquinas Varsity Game is Cancelled
The game scheduled for 4:45 pm today has been cancelled due to the rain and more rain that is coming this afternoon.
This game has not been reschedule yet.
Aquinas 15 - Albion 7
Aquinas cracked into the win column on a chilly day while playing their eighth straight road game at Section 6's Albion High School, 15 - 7. A stiff but variable cross wind going from third to first affected both pitching staff's, and led to tough going on the mound. Aquinas Sophomore Brian Speranza fought the weather off best and earned his first Varsity win going 6 innings while scattering 6 hits.
Albion scored two in the first, but that lead ended in the second when Aquinas brought 20 batters to the plate. Purple Eagle pitchers encountered control problems walking many, and AQ batters scattered 3 hits and 2 other hard hit balls that were misplayed for errors to score the runs. DJ Berry led the attack in that inning gaining two hits while driving in two. Albion put two more on the board in the bottom of the second, AQ 15 - 4.
The game settled down and Speranza threw 4 efficient innings using only 35 pitches over 14 batters. Albion scored three in the seventh to complete the scoring.
DJ Berry 2 for 4 (2 RBI), Dillon Flaherty 1 for 2 (2 RBI), Justin Allen 1 for 2 (RBI), Luke Scorsone 1 for 3 (2 RBI), Armando Rivera 1 for 3 (3 RBI), Ben Knauf 1 for 3 (RBI), Brian Speranza (6 IP, 6 H, 3K's, 4 ER, W)
The Gilman School 17 - Aquinas 7
Aquinas travelled to Baltimore to play preparatory school, The Gilman School, which featured several players that will be going to top tier Div-I schools and other players going to D-III schools for baseball next year.
In the second game of the double-header, in which both teams started a majority of players that didn't play in game 1, a hungry-for-a-win Aquinas squad tied Gilman into the fourth inning before the coach of Gilman replaced half his team with game 1 starters and blew open the game.
AQ scored two runs in the second when Armando Rivera was hit by a pitch, Nick Grella and Zack Mariani walked to load the bases, and Mike Scanlon singled to right scoring Rivera. Joe DeFrancesco hit an infield error which scored Grella.
In the top of the fourth, Aquinas scored five to tie the game at 7 when Mariani walked, Scanlon and DeFrancesco singled to load the bases, and Marcus Connor singled to score Mariani. Nick Giannavola then singled to score Scanlon and DeFrancesco. Ricky Lopez walked, and Rivera singled to score Connor and Giannavola.
Mike Scanlon 2 for 2 (RBI), Joe DeFrancesco 1 for 1 (RBI), Armando Rivera 1 for 2 (2 RBI), Nick Giannavola 1 for 4 (2 RBI), Marcus Connor 1 for 4 (RBI)
The Gilman School 12 - Aquinas 2
Aquinas travelled to Baltimore to play preparatory school, The Gilman School, which featured several players that will be going to top tier Div-I schools and other players going to D-III schools for baseball next year. Gilman scored at least one run in every inning using a 14 hit attack.
AQ scored one run in the third and another in the fourth. In the third, Justin Allen and DJ Berry singled and were advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Trey Brown. Tyler Freedman's single to right scored Allen. In the fourth, Armando Rivera singled and walks to Ben Barrow and Allen loaded the bases. Berry's single to left plated Rivera, but the rally ended there when Gilman turned a double play.
Justin Allen 1 for 1, Tyler Freedman 2 for 3 (RBI), DJ Berry 2 for 3 (RBI), Dillon Flaherty 1 for 3, Armando Rivera 1 for 3
Bishop Kearney 11 - Aquinas 3
Aquinas self-destructed early and lost at Bishop Kearney. Spotting the Kings 10 runs on only two hits was too deep a hole to climb out for the rest of the game.
Aquinas scored 1 in the second when Dillon Flaherty walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ben Barrow hit a ball to right that was dropped that advanced Flaherty to third, and he scored on a Ricky Lopez sac fly to center.
The Li'l Irish scored one more in the fourth and another in the fifth. In the fourth, Armando Rivera singled and advanced to third on walks to Lopez and DJ Berry, and was scored on Trey Brown's sac fly to left. In the fifth, Flaherty doubled and scored on an outfield error hit by Rivera.
Dillon Flaherty 1 for 2 (2B), Trey Brown 1 for 2 (2B, RBI), Armando Rivera 1 for 3 (RBI), DJ Berry 1 for 1 (RBI), Zach Mariani 1 for 2
Pittsford-Sutherland 6 - Aquinas 3
Aquinas left their bats on the bus and were 2 hit when they visited Pittsford-Sutherland. Aquinas did jump to an early 3 - 0 lead, but were unable to hold on to the lead, in part due to some fielding miscues.
The Li'l Irish scored their three runs in the top of the first when Ben Barrow and Ben Knauf walked, and Dillon Flaherty singled to load the bases. Another walk to Armando Rivera scored Barrow. Ricky Lopez hit an infield ball that was misplayed and that error plated Knauf and Flaherty. Aquinas had a runner in scoring position in the 2nd, 3rd and 5th innings, but were unable to get the hits needed to score those runners.
Ben Barrow started on the mound and was relieved by Brian Speranza.
Justin Allen 1 for 2, Dillon Flaherty 1 for 3, Ben Barrow (3 1/3 IP, 1 ER), Brian Speranza (2 2/3 IP, 2K's, 1 H, 0 R)

Aquinas - Ida Baker High School Games Cancelled
The Aquinas Institute's JV and Varsity games vs. Ida Baker High School of Cape Coral, Florida, were cancelled for this afternoon & evening due to a heavy line of storms, wind and rain which came through the Cape Coral area between 4 and 6 pm. The Lil' Irish travel back to Rochester on Friday, so these games will not be rescheduled. We wish the Bulldogs all success in their upcoming play-offs and hope to play them next year.
Bishop Verot High School 10 - Aquinas 6
Aquinas travelled across State this morning to Ft. Myers and played at Bishop Verot's Senior Night game, featuring the Viking's 12 seniors. That didn't seem to bother the Li'l Irish, who came out with a little more spring in their step and opened up a 3 - 0 lead in the first inning. Trey Brown led off the game with a single, and Ben Barrow and Tyler Freedman walked to load the bases. Dillon Flaherty reached first on an infield error, scoring Brown. Armando Rivera followed and was hit by a pitch, scoring Barrow. DJ Berry's infield out scored Freedman.
Bishop Verot plated one run in both the 2nd and 3rd innings using two long triples to full effect. A lead off home run in the fourth tied the game and another run scored later in the inning, B.V 4 - AQ 3. The Li'l Irish came back in the top of the fifth and scored three more runs. Tyler Freedman reached first on a misplayed 3rd pitch strike, Ben Knauf walked, and Rivera singled to load the bases. Berry then walked scoring Freedman, and Justin Allen hit an infield ball that was misplayed allowing Knauf & Rivera to score and Allen to second. AQ 6 - B.V. 4.
Bishop Verot (19 wins, 5 losses) broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth scoring six. In the top of the sixth, the Li'l Irish loaded the bases again with one out, but were unable to score any runs. Ben Barrow started for the Irish and used breaking and speed pitches effectively to keep the Viking hitters off balance most of the time.
Ben Barrow (4 IP, 1 K, 4 ER, No Decision), Armando Rivera 1 for 3 (RBI), Tyler Freedman 1 for 3, Ben Knauf 1 for 3, Trey Brown 1 for 4, DJ Berry (2 RBI)
Seminole Ridge 15 - Aquinas 3
Aquinas opened their three game schedule against Florida High School baseball teams and were roughed up falling 15 - 3 to Seminole Ridge HS (16 wins & 7 losses). The Li'l Irish pitchers struggled for another year at this field, yielding more walks than hits. Spotting the Red Hawks a 9 run lead after one inning, Aquinas didn't roll over and give up, but battled the rest of the way being outscored 6 - 3.
Aquinas put one on the board in the second when Ben Barrow doubled to right field and advanced to third on a passed ball. Zach Mariani hit an infield shot that was mis-thrown toward first allowing Barrow to score. The Irish added two more in the top of the fifth when DJ Berry singled, advanced to second on a walk to Nick Giannavola, and a single by Tyler Freedman loaded the bases. Ben Knauf doubled to center scoring Berry and Giannavola, but the rally ended there.
The Li'l Irish travel across State tomorrow to play Jesuit High School, Bishop Verot High School of Ft. Myers.
Ben Knauf 1 for 2 (2B, 2 RBI), Ben Barrow 1 for 2 (2B), DJ Berry 1 for 2, Tyler Freedman 1 for 3, Trey Brown 1 for 3, Zach Mariani (RBI)
St. Joseph's 5 - Aquinas 2
Aquinas opened their season in Buffalo at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and came away on the losing end of a tough, 5-2, game. The Li'l Irish stranded four runners in scoring position throughout the game, and had some early season miscues that might be expected for this was the team's first time outside this season.
Aquinas spotted the Marauders a 3 - 0 lead before getting on the scoreboard in the fourth. Tyler Freedman, Ben Knauf and Armando Rivera all hit consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs. Dillon Flaherty hit a ball to 3rd, which was bobbled, scoring Freedman. St. Joe's got that run back in the bottom of the inning, then added their 5th run in the fifth. Aquinas scored again in the sixth inning when Freedman led off with a single and advanced to 2nd on a misplay in the outfield. Knauf walked and both advanced a base on a passed ball. Freedman scored when Flaherty grounded to 3rd base, but the Marauders pitching staff, like they had done earlier in the game, ended the rally after that single run.
Tyler Freedman 2 for 2, Ben Knauf 1 for 2, Dillon Flaherty 1 for 3, (2 RBI), Armando Rivera 1 for 3, Ben Barrow (4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER)

Aquinas Baseball Alumni Game
About 25 Aquinas Baseball Alumni came out on a chilly Saturday morning, Sept. 14, and came from way behind to walk away with a 9 - 8 win over the 2014 Aquinas Varsity players. The game was played as a part of Alumni weekend. The Alumni team, coached by Alum & Varsity Head Coach Magliocco, fell behind 6 -0 before the alumni chipped away and took the lead in the 6th inning. The 2014 Varsity team, coached by Coach Bostick, fought a hard fight, but couldn't strike for a run in the 7th inning. All who played seemed to have smiles on their faces during the hand shake after the game. Coach Cringoli was the official umpire of the game.
Pictures from the game will be posted soon. Below are the team photos taken after the game.
