Not too many 14-year-old players get to play two games at Lynchburg’s City Stadium on the same day.
For Forest’s sophomore entry in the NABF World Series, the experience was bittersweet, and the outcomes of the two games like night and day.
In the morning game against the Spring (N.Y.) Renegades, which had gone 4-0 and were seeded first after pool play, Forest scored 10 runs in the first inning and went on to cruise to an 11-3 victory.
“We hit the ball well and got a solid pitching performance from Michael Carter,” Forest coach Troy Doss said. “He went seven innings and gutted it out.”
That sent JF to the championship game against the Up To Bat Titans out of Cleveland, Ohio, which also came out of its pool seeded second, beating Nothing But Baseball out of Pittsburgh, Pa., 11-2 to advance to the final.
But it was the Titans, not the Cavaliers, doing the pile-on celebrating inside the diamond as the sun set on Calvin Falwell Field on Saturday night, following their 4-1 championship victory.
After a leadoff single in the top of the first by Reed Bryant, Forest went 0 for the next 16 batters against Titans pitcher Allan Medovic, who struck out six and allowed just one hit through the first five innings.
“That pitcher was mixing up his pitches and kept us off balance all night,” Doss said. “We couldn’t get the timely hits when we needed them.”
The Titans, who improved to 57-12 on the season, came through in the clutch at the plate and capitalized on a couple Forest errors in the field.
Leadoff batter Carl Lint scored two unearned runs — first in the third after drawing a leadoff walk, stealing second and advancing to third on an error by the center fielder, and coming home on a sacrifice fly to shallow right.
Then in the three-run fourth, after Adam Vasil led off with a single and scored on a triple down the first-base line by Justin Aviles, Lint reached by error to bring home Aviles. He scored the final run on a single by Ben Szymczak to right when the relay throw home from first was too late.
Szymczak later was named the offensive player of the tournament.
The Cavaliers broke up the shutout with two outs in the sixth when Cal Hodgert and Cameron Byrd delivered back-to-back singles, scoring starting pitcher Mark Heideman, who had reached on a fielder’s choice after Bryant drew a one-out walk.
Eighth batter Ben Stanley singled past second with two outs in the seventh before the Titans retired Zach Coleman for the third time on the night to end it.
“It was just a privilege to be in the championship game,” said Doss, whose team finishes 4-2 in the tournament.
For the Titans, this was their ninth tournament of the summer and they have now won five, but this was their first NABF World Series championship.
“We’re a first-year team,” assistant coach John Vasil said, noting Up To Bat only advanced to Lynchburg after winning a five-state NABF Regional qualifier in Toledo, Ohio, last Saturday, beating teams from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsyl-vania.

Derby City Baseball, Inc. once again served as the host of this prestigious event. In one of the most balanced tournaments in years every team felt the pain of defeat and every team enjoyed the joys of victory.
Pool play began on Thursday morning and continued until completion on Saturday morning. Seven of the ten teams were still eligible to qualify for single elimination as late at Saturday morning. At the end of pool play four teams stood ready to move to single elimination play.

With the completion of Pool Play the pairings were set for the semi-final round. In the first semi-final game Pittsburgh St. Johns took on A Plus Plumbing from West Haven, Ct. Led by Brandon Federicci’s pitching performance and the timely hitting of Rick Satcho, Pittsburgh St. Johns defeated A Plus Plumbing 5 to 0 in the opening game of single elimination. Federicci pitched eight scoreless innings giving up only two hits and striking out seven. Satcho went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBI’s. This victory propelled Pittsburgh St. Johns into the championship on Sunday afternoon.
The nightcap easily could be called the most exciting game of the tournament. This game pitted Detroit Jet Box against Toledo All American Coach. Led by Mike Borkowski’s 5 1/3 innings of relief, where he gave up only one earned run and Travis Kochan’s two hits and two RBI’s, Detroit Jet Box came back from a 4 to 1 deficit with two runs in the eighth and two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 5 to 4 and advanced to championship Sunday.
The championship game matched Detroit Jet Box (4-1) against Pittsburgh St. Johns (5-0) for the Major Division championship. Making his second appearance of the tournament, Adam Echlin pitched seven innings with no earned runs and six strikeouts. This performance led Detroit Jet Box to a 5 to 1 victory over Pittsburgh St. Johns. This outing coupled with Echlin’s first outing of 9 complete innings giving up 1 earned run with 6 strikeouts earned him MVP for the tournament. Echlin finished 2-0 pitching 16 total innings, giving up one earned run and striking out 12.
Jim Jaskowski of Pittsburgh St. Johns won the batting title with average of .633 going 12 for 19.
TOURNEY NOTES: For the first time in sixty-seven years, a team representing Greater Pittsburgh Baseball Federation reached the final game of an NABF National Championship Series. In 1940 Birmingham Acipos of Alabama defeated the Pittsburgh-Wilkinsburg team 10-2. This was the second championship by the Jet Box team of Michigan. Jet Box won the 1997 championship by defeating the Fairfield Connecticut Sounders 8-3.
A huge thanks goes out to the host organization for a well run tournament and the tremendous effort on Thursday evening getting the fields playable after a hard storm. This effort enabled the tourney to remain on schedule for the remainder of the tournament.

Preparing For the NABF Regional In Youngstown
August 3, 2007
Now we start to get ready for the NABF Regional in Youngstown, Ohio from August 9-12. Play time over the last 10 weeks has ended and it is now time to get down to some serious work. To prepare this team the Mosquitoes will travel to Canton, Ohio to take on the Stallions that were the measuring stick for myself and Mark Mohnickey since the mid 90's.
The Mosquitoes arrived in 2004 and were Regional Runner-Ups that year and in also in 2005. In 2006 the Mosquitoes had an absolutely loaded team when they all got together and thats when the magic season of 2006 took off at the Regional and ended by winning the 2006 NABF Major Division World Series in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mark and I reached our goal of winning a World Series in 2006 and were going to hang it up after doing this since 1988. But a couple of the guys wanted a shot at repeating. Now... nobody believes we can repeat especially with all the guys that left after last season and the injuries that have hit us this season. What the heck, let's give it the old college try and shock all the non believers at the NABF in Youngstown. We have been the hunted all summer and until someone comes along and ends our season at the Regional we still hold the crown as the NABF Major Division Champion.
The guys that are able to make the trip to Canton on Saturday can meet me at UptobatWest in Brook Park just off of I-71 on Snow Rd. We can take some swings and leave around 9:45am as a group. For the guys who are traveling by themselves, Map Quest this address (1836 Mahoning Rd Ne
Canton, OH 44705) that I found for Cook Field. We will exit off of I-77 South in Canton by the Canton Pro Football Hall of Fame. The field is just off 12th street about 5-10 minutes from the highway.
Let's get some solid work in against a great Stallions team that will help prepare us for the NABF Regional. Our Championship road starts next Thursday and I believe in everyone of you when it counts the most just like I did in 2006 with that team.
Nine Is Enough For Mayfield
July 31, 2007
Not many if any at all would have given the Mayfield Nine a chance at all to beat the Mosquitoes on Tuesday night. The Mayfield Nine trailed for the entire game and was down 4-3 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th when the unthinkable happened. The Nines leadoff hitter singled up the middle followed by another opposite field single by the # 2 hitter to put runners on first and second. Up came the Nines best hitter who entered the game with the top batting average in the NOSPBL. Moyer with 2 strikes on him hit a deep drive to left center that was just out of the grasp of a diving Mosquitoes center fielder. Both runs came around to score and that was the ball game.
The Cleveland Mosquitoes (27-8, 21-4 NOSPBL) don't have time to look back as they take on the Cleveland Blackwolves (27-9, 16-6 NOSPBL) in a doubleheader Wednesday night starting at 6:00pm @ Pipe Yard.

Remaining Schedule Before August 9th NABF Regional
July 30, 2007
Monday, July 30th, 6:15pm @ B-W vs Olmsted Falls, Tuesday July 31, 6:15pm @ Bohlken Park vs Mayfield, Wednesday August 31, 6:00pm and 8:15pm @ Pipe Yard Field vs Cleveland Blackwolves and Saturday, August 4 @ 12:00pm and 2:00pm vs the Canton Stallions at Cook Field in Canton, Ohio.
The first 4 games finish off the NOSPBL season followed by a doubleheader with the Canton Stallions who have been one of the top summer teams in the country for the past 15 years. The Stallions were NABF WS Champions in 1994 and AABC World Series Champions in 1998. They also have been AABC WS Runner-up twice in the last couple of years. The last meeting between the Stallions and Mosquitoes took place at Munson Stadium in 2005 where the Stallions rallied from 3-1 in the bottom of the 6th to defeat the Mosquitoes 6-3 in 7 innings.
This is the week for the entire team to find its groove before the NABF Regional in Youngstown, August 9-12. The winner of the Regional will advance to Louisville, Kentucky for the NABF Major Division World Series August 16-19.
Players schedule your days off from work, etc. for the Regional dates and possibly the WS dates. The only way we win the Regional and World Series is to bring your entire team to each and every game and stick together no matter what the situation. This is what we have ultimately played for the past two and a half months to be in this position to repeat as World Series Champions. The time for all Mosquitoes to step up and sacrifice is now no matter what role each one of us plays.

The Friday game at Pipe Yard was cancelled due to wet field conditions. The Mosquitoes will play a doubleheader (Fairview Marlins) at Bohlken Park Saturday starting at 10:00am. Players arrive at 9:00am so we have time to stretch, throw and take infield.
Mosquitoes Defeat Fightin Titans
July 27, 2007
The Mosquitoes got on the board early when Jim Putko singled home Mark Thomas and Randy Munshower. The Mosquitoes struck again in the bottom of the 2nd when Kevin May and Jake Plata both singled to start the inning and were moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Micah Finch. Mark Thomas walked to load the bases and Jim Putko delivered again with a two out bases clearing double to make it 5-0 Mosquitoes.
Titan pitcher and Akron University all-time appearance leader Pat Gliha entered in the 4th and was greeted by a Mark Thomas triple, an infield single by Randy Munshower, single by Putko, walk to Petkac and Cash followed up by a two run RBI double by Kevin May to make the score Mosquitoes 9-0.
Ryan Dennick who wasn't at his best went the first 6 innings to register his 6th win of the season. Dennick struck out 7, however walked 7 and gave up 2 runs in the 5th on a two run RBI double to right center by Billy Froelich.
Steve Junker finished off the 7th pitching a scoreless inning with the Mosquitoes taking 3 of 4 games from the Titans this summer. Mosquitoes win 9-2.
Top hitters tonight were Mark Thomas who doubled, tripled, walked twice and scored 3 runs, along with Jim Putko who went 3-3, double, walk and 5 RBI.
Next Up:Cleveland Blackwolves on Friday at 6:00pm, Pipe Yard Field in Lorain.

On Saturday, July 21 the Cleveland Mosquitoes (23-7) took two games from the Olmsted Falls Bulldogs by the scores of 2-0 and 13-0.

Starting pitcher Randy Munshower pitched 5 innings while only allowing 2 hits. Ryan Dennick came on in the 7th to record the save.
In game #2 Ryan Dennick started and dominated for 4 innings by striking out 7. Jake Plata pitched the final inning by striking out 2. Randy Munshower, Mark Thomas, John Turk and Matt Madrid all had 2 RBI in this game.

Mosquitoes Sign Professional Contracts
July 16, 2007
It was reported early in June that two Mosquitoes from last seasons NABF World Series Championship team were drafted by Major League Baseball. LHP Steve Procner (Cleveland State) was drafted in the 28th round by the Baltimore Orioles. Procner signed and is doing very well after several starts in rookie ball. RHP Dominique Rodgers (Kent State) was drafted in the 36th Round by the Minnesota Twins and signed last week with the Twinkies.
Another huge contributor last season was former AAA Pro (INF) Alex Eckelman (Ohio State, St.Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros) who was hired by the Houston Astros as a coach in A ball in Lexington, Kentucky.
We wish all three of these guys the best of luck and thank them for the contributions they provided the Mosquitoes in 2006.

Mosquito Baseball Alert
July 14, 2007
After starting out the season at 13-2 the Cleveland Mosquitoes have teeter-tottered the last 10 games for an overall record of 18-7. Due to the lack of numbers it has taken a toll on the team record. This is not Mosquito baseball and this ship will either turn around together or sink because we are not together as one. Nobody can consistently win games with 10 guys each game against good competition when the opposition is bringing 15-20. Last night we brought 11 guys...one guy had to leave early, but came to help out anyway. Another was drastically sick, but played as long as he could before he was ready to pass out after throwing up all game. We finished the game losing 6-5 with a total of 9 guys compared to the 20 or more that the Go Baseball Veteran team had in Oberlin. Three of the nine guys finishing the game were pitchers who had to play the field for us to finish out the game. These guys are not hitters on this team.
It is hard to find an identity when the lineup has to constantly change due to a lack of numbers. In the next week look for a steady return of 1B-OF Mark Thomas, 1B-C-3B Kevin May and OF-INF Stipe Miocic who are major pieces to last seasons National Title run. Also coming aboard are INF Matt Madrid, SS Nandi Cruz and RHP Jesse Yano. The younger guys as well as some of the older need to step up and show they have what it takes.
This team come tournament time (Youngstown NABF Regional, August 9-12) will only be allowed to carry 21 players. Some guys are going to be left off like it or not and the decision will be made because people are showing up, playing well and who fits best to round out the best roster for a title run. Not everyone can play, but I expect the last couple of weeks and at tournament time everyone will be in attendance if they are playing or not. If you don't like to hear that then you are not supporting the team and what it is attempting to accomplish in August. Everyone said that the Mosquitoes cannot win back to back NABF World Series Titles, let alone reach it again after all the guys who left after last season. I disagree and truly believe that if people step up and give everything they have toward the team over the next month we can accomplish our goal. To do this people need to sacrifice and make baseball a higher priority now. If you know we have the Regional August 9-12 make plans to take some vacation time, etc. The World Series is in Louisville, Kentucky August 16-19. If you can't make these dates let me know and I will replace you with someone who can make it.
As for our play we need to cut down on some of our physical and mental mistakes while the pitching needs to walk less to be successful. Hitters need to work the counts better and set themselves up to see better pitches, especially when we have runners already on base.
Get into a proper frame of mind when you step on the field starting with getting to the games on time to properly prepare yourself physically and mentally. Nothing upsets a coach more then to have guys show up late, not come at all or not even call to say one way or another if they will be making it or not before game time.
Sunday, July 15 (Doubleheader) game is against the Cleveland Bruins who have already beat the Mosquitoes twice. If you can't get up for that then you don't care and you don't belong with this one particular team. First game starts at 1:30pm so you know what time you need to be at the field (Hint:12:30pm) stretching and throwing.
Time to turn this thing around. Do you have the hunger and desire to be World Series Champions in 2007?

Mosquitoes Battle Roster Drought
June 2, 2007
Getting to see Mosquitoes around the diamond is becoming almost as tough as getting rain to fall in Northeastern Ohio. The numbers were low again on Sunday and Monday as the Mosquitoes split.
Sunday the Mosquitoes squeeked out a game with the Cleveland Spiders 4-3 of the Cleveland Baseball Federation. The Mosquitoes out hit the Spider 11-3 but stranded numerous runners in scoring position. LHP Ryan Dennick was fantastic as he struck out 13 batters in 9 innings to gain the win.
Monday night 10 Mosquitoes made the trip to Oberlin College to take on the Go Baseball Veterans of the Cuyahoga League. This Veterans team was in the 22 and under NABF World Series last summer in Louisville, Kentucky and lost to the eventual World Series Champion in the semi finals 5-4. With basically the same team back this Veterans team is one of the better teams in Ohio this summer which plays solid fundamental baseball along with some nice hitting.
The Mosquitoes trailed the Veterans 2-0 going into the top of the 6th and the Mosquitoes responded by scoring 4 runs. C John Turk started the inning with a single followed by another single by Chris Check. With one out SS Bobby Cash singled home Turk. Jacob Petkac followed with a double deep to left center scoring both Check and Cash to make it 3-2 Mosquitoes. With 2 outs 3B Dan Glozer followed with an RBI single of his own scoring Petkac to make it 4-2 Mosquitoes going into the bottom of the 6th.
Unfortunately the Mosquitoes couldn't hold the lead as the Veterans tied the game at 4 in the bottom half of the 6th as they came up big with a 2 out single that scored 2. The Veterans would score the winning run in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs.
Thus the Cleveland Mosquitoes (16-4, 12-3 NOSPBL) will get ready to take on some National and Ohio competition this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Pipe Yard Midwest Holiday Tournament.

Not Many Mosquitoes Tonight In Split
June 28, 2007
It would seem that Pipe Yard sprayed for Mosquitoes this summer as it has been a constant battle to see them at the park in Lorain.
The few Mosquitoes that showed battled for the 3rd time with the Cleveland Bruins who have turned out to be the 2006 version of the Berea Blue Sox.
The Mosquitoes jumped out on top in the 4th on a 2 out RBI double by Ed Konopka that scored runners from 2nd and 3rd. The Bruins tied the game in the bottom of the 6th on 3 hits, 2 errors and a passed ball. The Bruins won the game on a controversial call in the 7th after a failed squeeze play to win the game. The umpire called dead ball after 2 Bruins stood on 3rd base awarding the Bruins the winning run.
The Mosquitoes came out in game #2 upset and took it out early on the Mayfield Nine with 10 runners crossing the plate in the top of the 1st.
RF Jim Putko was perfect by going 4-4, double, 4 runs scored and 4 RBI. Jake Plata went 4 innings and only allowed 2 hits while Kevin Kumazec came on to finish the game by striking out 2.
The Mosquitoes will be back in action Sunday at 6:15pm at Lakewood High School followed by a game Monday at Oberlin College against Go Veterans Baseball at 6:30pm.

Bulldogs Bark; Mosquitoes Bite Back
June 23, 2007
RHP Kyle Stahlberg, the ace of the Bulldogs staff is the leading strikout leader in the NOSPBL. Stahlberg was effective in holding the Mosquitoes hitless until the 6th when 2B Bobby Cash singled and tried to to stretch it into a double, but was called out at 2nd. Catcher John Turk singled in the next at bat, but the inning would stall going into the 7th with the Mosquitoes trailing 1-0.
Mosquitoes starter Dan Glozer went the first 6 innings striking out 10 hitters while giving up 1 run on 5 hits. Fortunately for the Mosquitoes RF Jake Plata hit a solo homer to lead off the top of the 7th off Stahlberg to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
The Mosquitoes would tack on 4 runs in the top of the 8th when CF Mark Dvoroznak lead off with a single and stoled 2nd. Cash would single Dvoroznak in to make it 2-1. After John Turk reached on an error, 1B Marty Healy doubled home 2 runs to make it 4-1. Player/Coach Ed Konopka would then come on to hit in the 8th and singled to center driving in the 5th and final run of the game.
LHP Ryan Dennick came on to pitch the 7th and 8th to get the win. Dennick struckout 4.
Game #2 the Mosquitoes started out like they finished off Game #1 by scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the first. Dvoroznak lead off the inning with a double and scored on a Bobby Cash double. Cash then scored on a RBI single by OF Jim Putko. John Turk would later knock in Putko with a single while Jake Plata who walked would score on an error to make it 5-1. SS Randy Munshower who reached on the error would later score the 6th run of the inning on an RBI single to left by Ed Konopka.
The Mosquitoes would put up 4 more runs in the 4th to make the final score 10-1. Top hitters for game #2 were Jim Putko 2-4, Marty Healy 2-4 and Randy Munshower 2-3.
RHP Danny Fawcett picked up his league leading 4th victory of the season. LHP Micah Finch came on to throw 2 scoreless innings striking out 3 while LHP Jake Plata closed out a scoreless 7th.
The Mosquitoes will be back in action on Thursday, June 28th in a doubleheader starting at 6:15pm at Pipe Yard against the Cleveland Bruins.
That game will be followed by a game against the Mayfield 9 around 8:30pm.
The Mosquitoes head into a weekend of non league action against two teams from the Cleveland Baseball Federation and one from the Cuyahoga Class A League.
Saturday, June 30, 1:00pm against Garfield Blue Streaks @ Gordon Park #1.
Sunday July 1, 6:15pm against the Spiders @ Lakewood (Turf) High.
Monday July 2, 6:30pm against Go Baseball Veterans @ Oberlin College.
Mosquitoes Edge Wolves
June 21, 2007
LF Mike Schade got on by walk and advanced to 2nd on a two out single by RF Jim Putko. 1B Jacob Petkac delivered with an RBI single to right center scoring Schade. The Mosquitoes would get that all important second run on an RBI single to right off the bat of C John Turk.
With a 2-0 lead going into the 7th the Blackwolves would finally get a run of Junker as he gave up a walk and only his 2nd hit of the entire game which knocked in a run to make it 2-1. Junker would hold on to record his 2nd win of the season in what was arguably the best pitchers match up of the season.
The Mosquitoes (12-2) will be back in action on Saturday, June 23 at 5:30pm in the first game of a doubleheader (Bohlken Park) against the Olmsted Falls Bulldogs. Everyone please be at the game by 4:30pm. If anyone is interested we can get some hitting in at Uptobatwest around 3:30pm which is only about 15 minutes from Bohlken Park in Fairview. Mosquitoes Split With Titans
June 17, 2007
It has been a tough week for the Mosquitoes and I am sure nobody will feel sorry that they have been playing very short handed of late.
In game #1 the Mosquitoes scored two runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Player/coach Ed Konopka started it with a single to center. Konopka later scored from 2nd on an RBI single by shortstop Bobby Cash. Cash would later come around to score. The Mosquitoes scored three more times in the 5th. Konopka again started the inning with a walk. CF Mark Dvoroznak hit a ball to center that was misplayed. Cash knocked in Konopka, while Dvoroznak and Cash scored on an RBI double into the rightfield gap. Starting pitcher Danny Fawcett was exceptional again as he went the distance to record the win. Fawcett struck out 5 and gave up 5 hits while allowing a late 7th inning run to break up his shutout. Konopka went 2-2, 2 runs and a walk while Bobby Cash went 2-3, 2 runs, SB and 2 RBI. Mosquitoes defeat Titans 5-1.
Game # 2 started out well as the Mosquitoes scored in the 1st as Dvoroznak reached on an error, stoled 2nd and later scored on a Cash single. The Mosquitoes left many runners in scoring position throughout the game, but give credit to Titan pitcher Andy Shon who kept shutting the door with big strikeouts as he set down a total of 10 Mosquitoes on the day by way of the K. The Titans scored 2 unearned runs off starter Dan Glozer in the bottom of the 4th to take a 2-1 lead. The Titans got some insurance as they scored another run in the bottom of the 6th on a wild pitch. Thus the Titans went on to defeat the Mosquitoes 3-1.
After yesterday's split the Mosquitoes still lead the Titans by a half game for 1st place in the Northern Ohio League. The Mosquitoes are now 8-2 on the NOBL, while the Titans are 8-3.
The Cleveland Mosquitoes (11-2, 8-2 NOBL) will be back in action on Thursday, 8:30PM at the Pipe yard as they again get to take on a very tough Cleveland Blackwolves team who is currently tied for 3rd with the Cleveland Bruins.

Bruins Halt Streak At 10 With 5 In The 7th
June 14, 2007
The short handed Mosquitoes lost its first game of the season to the Cleveland Bruins after being up 3-1 in the 7th. In the top of the 7th the Mosquitoes recorded the 1st out of the inning, but after giving up a couple hits, an error, hit batter, bases loaded clearing double and another rbi single the Mosquitoes trailed for the first time all game 6-3. The Mosquitoes had runners on 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the 7th, but left them stranded, thus losing for the first time this season.
The Mosquitoes will be back in action in a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12:30pm against the Westlake Titans at Pipe Yard.
Hopefully the Mosquitoes will have a greater number of players in attendance or it could be a long day against the Fightin Titans.

Semi-Pro Teams to Debut at Pipe Yard
By ERIC STOESSEL
Morning Journal Sports Editor
05/22/2007
LORAIN -- With Cleveland State playing in the Horizon League tournament this week in Chicago, The Pipe Yard will welcome a new tenant. The Northern Ohio Semi-Pro Baseball League will play its first games at the facility tonight with a doubleheader beginning at 6:15.
The league was the brainchild of 2002 Westlake graduate Mike Janos. It began last year and has seven Cleveland-based teams that are made of college, amateur and former pro players.
This is going to afford the people of Lorain the chance to see top quality baseball on a regular basis this spring and summer,'' Lorain Parks and Recreation Director Bob Renney said. ''It will continue to be a showcase field for professional scouts, college recruiters and baseball fans in general.''
Tonight's first game features the Cleveland Black Wolves vs. the Fairview Marlins, followed by the Cleveland Mosquitoes vs. the Ohio Fightin' Titans at 8:30. The Mosquitoes are the defending national champions and the current No. 1 team in the country. The Titans, Janos' team, are ranked in the top 20. Janos is the team's general manager, a player and the league founder, commissioner and president.
Janos estimates that about 90 percent of the league is made of current college players with the rest being amateurs and former pro players.
The league is non-profit and players aren't paid. Teams are funded by sponsors, fundraisers and player fees. The game is played with wood bats and Janos said pro scouts will often attend the games, which are also played at area high schools like Westlake and Fairview when not in Lorain. Fifty-nine games are scheduled for The Pipe Yard this spring and summer.
''For me it's a true fantasy to manage this type of thing,'' said Janos, who recently played for the Surprise (Ariz.) Fighting Falcons, an independent pro team. ''I wanted the best competition and best things for the players. It's a shame for guys to go play softball after playing college baseball. They can play semipro baseball and spend nights with their families or it's there so guys can get seen by scouts.''
Janos said, for example, his team features former Westlake standout Billy Froehlich, the 2005 Big South freshman of the year from Division I Winthrop. Several other area and Lorain County players are playing for the seven teams.
Admission is $3 for the games in Lorain and children under 12 are only $1. Season tickets are available for $50 and Renney said pre-paid passes good for any 12 games or seats are $25.
''The Pipe Yard made the right choice to allow us to play there,'' Janos said. ''Hopefully everyone will come out to see some great competition.''

CF Marty Healy who looks to be on a mission to return to his old form that made him one of the best in Ohio in 2005 went 3-3 with a double and towering 2-run homer to left center high off the light pole in left. Also returning this season is outfielder Mike Schade who went 2-5, 3 RBI and a solo home run to right. 1B Kevin May who has been the leader of the Mosquitoes since 2002 went 2-5 with a double.
Some of the Mosquitoes new additions that were on hand were catcher Josh Beineman from Maryland and our new right handed ace Dan Glozer from North Royalton, Ohio. Beineman went 3-4 with 2 RBI while Dan Glozer got the start and went 3 innings while only allowing one hit. Second year player LHP Ryan Dennick came in to relieve Glozer and also went 3 innings allowing only one hit while striking out 5.

New Year...New League...New Challenges
March 6, 2007
After two seasons of play in the Strongsville-Cuyahoga Class A wood bat league the Mosquitoes are moving on to bigger and better things. The Cuyahoga League has lost three of its best teams in the Twinsburg Thrusters, Crestwood Steamers and now the Cleveland Mosquitoes. Along with two of the better teams leaving the commissioner of the Strongsville Class A League was running the league along the lines of a dictatorship which had become difficult to deal with each season. Other reasons with this being the final straw was common courtesy was not one of his stronger points especially when intentions were clear to him about our position in the league. Attention to detail was also a major disappointment if you bring up the 2005 NABF Regional roster fiasco which he felt no remorse in messing up and felt no need to apologize.
Now the Cleveland Mosquitoes move on to one of Ohio best upcoming leagues. The Northern Ohio Semi Pro Baseball League (NOSPBL) in the 4th season of existence will feature the young and very talented teams of the Westlake Titans, Cleveland Blackwolves, Cleveland Bruins along with several others.
The league will feature a 28 game regular season with the flexibility to play out of league games. The league will also feature an all-star game against the Akron AA League in Akron sometime in July. Better overall playing fields and a board of representatives from each team will give direction to where this league goes which will be a far cry from what we were used too.
The NOSPBL will be one of the best leagues in Ohio top to bottom featuring four of the top twenty-five teams from the Ohio Buckeye Top 25 in 2006.
The Westlake Titans were Ohio's Runner-Ups in the Buckeye Tournament last August in Cincinnati. The Cleveland Bruins were near flawless in winning the Northern Ohio (WOOD BAT) League last season. The Blackwolves were close to 30 wins last season as they played many out of league opponents. The Fairview Park Marlins and Mayfield Nine will also be major players in the league along with a couple others.
This season will be a huge challenge to the Mosquitoes as the bulls-eye is clearly on our backs against the league, state and rest of the country in being the 2006 National Champion, NABF Major Division World Series Champion, NABF Youngstown Regional Champion and Cleveland 4th of July Champions with a 43-9 record.
Two Thousand-Seven will be a new year of challenges which we are ready to take on anyone with one goal and that is to repeat as the NABF World Series Champion in mid August down in Louisville, Kentucky to defend our title as the National Champions.

Mosquitoes November Acquisitions for 2007
West Virginia Head Coach Greg Van Zant said he was able to land one of Ohio’s top outfielders by signing the speedy Dvoroznak (6-2, 187) of St. Edward High. Dvoroznak hit .460 with six doubles, three home runs, and 26 RBI as a captain for St. Edward this past season. He also used his speed to steal 24 bases in 2006 and over 50 bases in his high school career. Dvoroznak is a two-time team MVP, while being named to the 2005 Plain Dealer “Best of the Best” and Mizuno all-state in 2006. Mark was ranked (# 47 overall) in the Buckeye top 100 for 2006.
“Mark is a big, strong athlete who can run a 6.6 in the 60-yard dash so he can play any position in the outfield,” Van Zant says. “We feel he can be an exceptional hitter because of his short, quick swing and he can develop into a power threat because of his size."
Also received committments from two Eastern Michigan player's that were both in the Buckeye Top 100 in 2006.
Dan Glozer (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton), a right-handed pitcher/infielder and four-year varsity letterwinner, was selected to the First Team All Ohio team as a utility player and designated hitter. He was also named The Plain Dealer Player of the Year (2005) and the Buckeye Scout All-Scout Team and top (# 16 overall) 100. Glozer led North Royalton to their best record in school history, 28-2, while going 11-0 with four saves and a 1.20 ERA. As a shortstop, Glozer batted .394 while only striking out four times in 94 at bats. Dan Glozer tops out in the low 90's.
Kevin Sikora (Boardman, Ohio-Boardman), a left-handed pitcher, is a Puma Preseason All-American and has led Boardman in strikeouts and ERA the past two seasons. Sikora was also selected as a 2005 Team One top 30 Midwest Player and Buckeye Scout top (# 61) 100. During his junior campaign, Sikora struckout 63 batters in 54 innings and was voted First-Team All-Federal League. As a sophomore, he tallied 48 strikeouts with a 2.24 ERA earning an All-Federal League mention. Sikora tops out around 90 mph.
National Championship Rings
After an amazing 2006 season that saw the Cleveland Mosquitoes (43-9) win the Cleveland 4th of July Tournament, Youngstown Regional Tournament, Louisville, Kentucky NABF Major Division World Series and voted # 1 in the country by the NASPBA National Rankings...the prize finally arrived.
A good portion of the team along with friends and family showed up at Mary Arts in Lakewood, Ohio Sunday night. Congratulations to the 2006 Cleveland Mosquitoes! Now we set out on a journey which almost everyone believes is the impossible task and that is REPEATING. So prepare to be the hunted in 2007.

Mosquitoes Honored @ Jacobs Field
October 1, 2006 – 11:30 AM
The Mosquitoes were sent to the press room around 7:15pm after meeting with Slider for promotional pictures. The Press Conference at Jacobs Field was to announce the resigning of RF-DH Jim Putko for the 2007 season. Jim who was a 2006 NASPBA All-American and made the NABF Major Division World Series First Team signed for a hometown discount, which many Cleveland teams can say they never would get. Jim, his beautiful wife Cassie and child Jack believe the Mosquitoes are the team that has what it takes to win back to back national titles.
Around 8:05pm a large roar came from the 17,562 in attendance as the Indians grounds crew started taking the tarp off the field. The Mosquitoes team made its way to home plate around 8:15pm as the Indians had a 10 minute tribute set up with video crew, camera men and the Mosquitoes team on the Jumbo Tron. The Indians public address announcer honored the Mosquitoes by telling the crowd about the numerous accomplishments of the team over the years and the major accomplishments of being crowned 2006 National Champion and NABF Major Division World Series Champion. The Indians announcer highlighted each World Series game with Mark Thomas looking like the big winner as Thomas was mentioned a couple times as Mark was caught flashing his UptobatWest hat to the video crew. During the ceremony the Tampa Bay Devil Rays taunted the Mosquitoes record of 43-9, but obviously that was out of jelousy as the Devil Rays lost to the Indians 6-1 Saturday night marking Tampa Bay's 100th loss of the season. The ceremony was topped off as Mosquitoes Ed Konopka, Mark Mohnickey and Andy Mohnickey threw out first pitches of the game to Kevin Kouzmanoff, Jeremy Sowers and Kelly Shoppach of the Indians. As the team left the field the Mosquitoes were givin a standing ovation as the city of Cleveland finally had a winner to be truly proud of. All in all a great evening for the players, family and friends that were in attendance and we look for even bigger and better things to come in 2007.

Eckelman Inducted Today at Halftime of Ohio St.-Cincinnati Game
September 16, 2006 – 10:00 AM
Congratulations to Cleveland Mosquito infielder Alex Eckelman who will be inducted today into Ohio State Hall of Fame. Alex joined the Mosquitoes after playing nearly 10 years in professional baseball with the St.Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros organizations. Alex was instrumental in helping the Mosquitoes advance to the NABF World Series with his stellar play in the Youngstown NABF Major Division Regional Tournament.
Former Ohio State baseball player Alex Eckelman is among a group of 12 former Buckeye student-athletes who will be inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame today. The class will be officially inducted in two separate ceremonies Sept. 15 and introduced to the public at half-time of the Cincinnati-Ohio State football in Ohio Stadium Sept. 16.
Eckelman was a four-time letterwinner who was a two-time first team All-Big Ten selection (1996, '97). He was member of two Big Ten regular-season championship teams (1994, '95) and three Big Ten tournament career in the Top 10 in program history in career batting average (.367), runs batted in (156), at-bats (657), hits (241), doubles (43), home runs (34) and runs scored (172). He led the Buckeyes in batting average, hits, at-bats and runs scored in 1996. His .439 batting average that season was the highest OSU batting average in 36 years and ranks second in program history.

The mission has been accomplished. The Cleveland Mosquitoes have won the National Amateur Baseball Federation Major Division National Title.
The Mosquitoes secured that honor with an 8-3 win over Detroit Jet Box in the NABF age 18 and over wooden bat World Series in Louisville, Kentucky.
All along, our goal was to win the NABF World Series, said Mark Mohnickey, who along with former St. Edward classmate, Ed Konopka, have chased that dream for nearly 20 years.
And when we won it, we figured that was going to be it. But about two days later, we all thought, why not try to repeat. We have a wonderful group of outstanding players and we were treated great by the NABF folks in Louisville including Charlie Blackburn, who asked if we were coming back. So, it looks like we will give it another try. And while the goal was to go all the way and win a national title, Mohnickey also see's another of his goals still not met.
When we started, we wanted to put amateur baseball back on the map in the Cleveland area. It used to be a very visible product, but in recent times, it has slipped.
Those old enough can recall when places like Edgewater Park, Brookside Park and Gordon Park had their lights shine down on teams that had players earn their way to professional contracts. Some were lucky enough to climb the ladder all the way to Major League Baseball.
Mohnickey, who lives in North Ridgeville, sees keeping the success of the Mosquitoes alive a way of helping rekindle the flames for amateur baseball in the area.
It's been about 30 years since a Cleveland team won a major amateur baseball title, said Konopka, a Bay Village resident.
I think it was back in 1976 when Ferry Cap won the AABC title. Our winning the Major Division NABF tournament is a first for a Cleveland team since 1947, Konopka recalled.
While Mohnickey and Konopka have gathered a group of some of the best amateur baseball talent in the area, they want that talent pool to grow and extend. They want those who want to play at a high level have that chance to fulfill that dream of baseball success near their homes.
We played in two leagues to play enough games against tough competition, said Mohnickey, who has stepped back a bit in his role with the team in the last three years.
I didn't have the time for the day-to-day operations due to family obligations, but Ed agreed to step up and be the one responsible for managing the team from lineups to game strategy, he added.
I still was able to make about 80 percent of the games, but Ed was able to give more of his time. He works with a baseball facility and isn't married with kids, so it was a good move for the team to have Ed become the manager.
For Konopka, the goals are being met.
The major achievement is that amateur baseball is alive and well again in Cleveland, said the NABF coach of the year.
The list of players is 25 deep with some playing for the Mosquitoes in both regular season leagues and some playing with one or the other.
We had 25 great guys, said Mohnickey. But we could only roster 21 for each league. We were able to give everybody the opportunity to play, especially pitchers with the 25 players we had.
That list includes more than a half-dozen who have had professional experience. The former pros who turned Mosquitoes are Alex Eckelman, a former Ohio State baseball player and St. Louis Cardinal farm hand, who will enter Ohio State's Hall of Fame this fall along with Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George; Mark Thomas, who played with the Montreal Expos organization and now operates Up To Bat West in Brook Park; D.J. Santiago, a former John Marshall standout, who played in the Indians and Reds organizations and now directs Aspiring Athletes in Rocky River, which helps place high school players in college; Chuck Smith of John Adams High, who played pro ball for 15 years and left the Mosquitoes for another shot at playing for pay in Taiwan during the season; Jim Rieke and Jeff Forbes, who played in the Independent League with the Canton Crocodiles along with Jim Putko, who played in the Chicago Cubs system.
Some of the high-profile amateur resumes include Kevin May of Avon Lake, who played at Marietta College; Ryan Dennick of North Olmsted, who this spring helped Marietta to the NCAA Division III title; Stipe Miocic, who is training in Akron to be a cage fighter when not playing baseball; Jeff Deighton, a second baseman at Miami who prepped at St. Ignatius; Ryan Davis, the closer for Kent State; and Dominique Rodgers who looks to get drafted out of Kent State next year.
The Mosquitoes roster also includes Blake Busson, Bryan Costin, Dan Dietrich, Marty Healy, Eric Hoffman, Randy Munshower, E.J. Pokorney, Stephen Procner, Mike Schade, Kevin Schwamel. Nick Sweetnich, Jeff Thamann, Mike Turchan, Joe Waldecker and Bill Welsh.

World Series title goes to Mosquitoes
Friday, September 01, 2006

Cleveland fielded a baseball team this summer worthy of the title, "Champion."
"With our name being the Cleveland Mosquitoes, we represent the city of Cleveland," first baseman/outfielder Mark Thomas said of the squad, recent World Series champions of the National Amateur Baseball Federation Major Division.
"A lot of the guys grew up around here. It's always nice to represent your city, and it's nice to win a championship. We deserved it."
Thomas, a Warren John F. Kennedy graduate and former Montreal Expos farmhand, slugged a three-run home run in the championship game, an 8-3 Mosquitoes' victory on Aug. 20 over former champion Detroit Jet Box. Cleveland State pitcher and Girard High graduate Stephen Procner tossed his second nine-inning complete game of the tournament to earn the victory and World Series MVP honors.
The Mosquitoes went 10-2 in regional and World Series play, finishing the season 43-9 and ranked first in the nation.
"You're playing against current and ex-Division I college players and ex-pros," said Mosquitoes coach/utility infielder Ed Konopka, the NASPBA's Coach of the Year.
"Especially for [assistant coach/general manager] Mark Mohnickey and myself, winning the championship was unbelievable. It's about all we've talked about the last 18 years."
Konopka and Mohnickey are 1987 graduates of St. Edward, where they were baseball teammates. Konopka and Mohnickey, who played college baseball at Muskingum and Wright State, respectively, founded the Mosquitoes in 1988. The team has won 10 Cleveland Baseball Federation titles.
John Adams graduate Chuck Smith, who went 11-11 for the Florida Marlins in 2000-01, pitched for the Mosquitoes earlier this season.

Three Mosquitoes Make World Series All-Tournament Team
August 30, 2006 – 12:00 PM
MAJOR DIVISION (unlimited age) Louisville, Kentucky
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Stephen Procner, Cleveland Mosquitoes
BATTING CHAMPION: Mark Abro, Detroit Jet Box
The 93rd Annual NABF National Championship Series was played at Derby City Field, Louisville, Kentucky.
The Cleveland Mosquitoes defeated Detroit Jet Box 8 to 3 behind left handed pitcher Stephen Procner. This was Procner’s second nine inning win in the series, earning him the 2006 MVP award.
The Cleveland Mosquitoes jumped out in the first inning 1 to 0 on a passed ball. Scored another on a single by Mike Schade scoring Jeff Thamann. Cleveland scored three more runs in the sixth with Marty Healy driving in one with a double to right center making the score 5 to 1 and 3 more runs were tacked on in the eighth with a Mark Thomas 3 run home run to seal the championship. Batting Champion was first baseman Mark Abro of Detroit Jet Box. Abro had 10 hits in 21 at bats for a batting average of .476. Jim Putko of the Mosquitoes went 10-24 in the tournament for a average of .404. Stipe Miocic hit over .333 with (4) doubles, a three run home run and 5 rbi for the tournament. Besides Miocic's hot bat he stabilized the middle of the infield in game two and throughout the rest of the tournament with his glove at shortstop. The Mosquitoes were without all three shortstops from the Mosquito season roster and the 6'3 220 Miocic who played 1b, 3b and outfield all season did a tremendous job. Mark Thomas hit .269 for the tournament, but he worked many counts full each game and came up with the walk off double to defeat the Brunswick Orioles and the three run homer to help seal the victory over Jet Box. Steve Procner, the MVP of the NABF World Series threw 18 innings, recording 2 wins while giving up 6 runs, 6 earned on 2 walks, 12 K's with a ERA of 3.00. Every single Mosquito player who was in the World Series did something special at one time to contribute to what was truly a total team effort to defeat some outstanding teams. Many thanks to all the Mosquitoes from the first day of the regular season until the last game at Derby City Field.

Knights Swat Mosquitoes for Title
July 28, 2006 – 11:50 PM
After being three outs from winning the Strongsville-Cuyahoga Title Thursday night it was all washed away Friday as the Knights gave the Mosquitoes its worst loss of the season by the score of 7-0. The Knights young 18 year old pitcher Mike Herringshaw fresh out of high school at NDCL held the Mosquitoes at bay by using an assortment pitches to keep the team off balance. When the Mosquitoes were hitting the ball hard it was right at people. Hopefully the Mosquitoes with a week of rest will feel re-energized to get back after our goal of a NABF Regional Championship at Youngstown August 10-13.
Also congratulations to Manager Bill Yazbec and his Lake County Knights on winning the League Championship and best of luck to them in representing the league at the Warren Stan Musial Ohio State Tournament August 3-6.

No Shows, Late Shows & Errors Lead to Mosquito Loss
July 24, 2006
I for one was completely embarrassed by our play tonight and anyone who wasn't doesn't belong out on the field with this team. I also was disappointed by players complaining and a lack of commitment to know when one should be at the field. The last thing I want to do is be worrying if we have enough guys with 5 minutes to go before game time making it impossible for me to even write out a lineup or take infield. This is completely unacceptable and people better wake up because I am tired of this and changes will be made whether you care or not. At this point I don't care who gets upset because I want people who are committed when they say they are coming and give 100 effort without complaining.
(Series Tied 1-1) Cuyahoga Championship Final will be Thursday, 8:30pm @ Foltz Field.

The Marlins were threatening to take the lead in the top of the 7th after they scored one and had runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Cleveland Blackwolves the Mosquitoes Jim Rieke took the mound fresh off a perfect game thrown against the Lake County Knights last weekend and didn't disappoint as he threw a complete game one hitter. The Mosquitoes hit the ball hard and stranded a host of runners, but finally got the one run that Rieke needed when Rob Vernon singled to start the 6th, stole 2nd and came home on a Jim Putko single that was enough for a 1-0 Mosquito victory over a tough Blackwolves team
Game # 2 the Mosquitoes had Marietta College lefty standout Ryan Dennick on the mound. Ryan went 6 innings while only giving up 4 hits with 7 K's. Eric "Hoff Daddy" Hoffman closed out another game with a perfect 7th. The Mosquitoes big blows of the game were a 2-run homer by Mike Schade and a grand slam by Stipe Miocic to cap off a 9-0 victory.

No Shows Make Winning Tough
June 12, 2006 – 11:40 PM
In what has been a constant habit over the last three weeks is starting to take a toll on the team. A vast majority of top players were again missing tonight (batting were 2 pitchers in the lineup) as the Mosquitoes fell to Berea 2-1 on another 2 out single to score a Berea runner from 3rd, just like Sundays 2-1 loss to the Steamers. The Mosquitoes actually jumped on top in the top of the 7th when Mike Schade doubled to left. Later advanced to third and scored on a Kevin Schwamel single. The Mosquitoes had a chance to tack on more with runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, but failed to do so. Berea came up with a walk and three hits to shock the Mosquitoes. The loss could put the team in a tie with the Steamers for the first half champs if the Steamers win its last few first half games which would force a deciding game to break a tie.
Mosquitoes and Steamers Split Doubleheader
June 11, 2006 – 11:55 PM
In a battle for first place on the line for the first half champion the Mosquitoes and Steamers did battle in a doubleheader Sunday at Foltz.

The Mosquitoes stranded two more runners after the Eckleman RBI with less than 2 outs and proceeded to strand 2 more runners in both the 6th and 7th innings. The Steamers SS Roborecki started the 7th with a double to right center and eventually moved over to 3rd on a ground ball to first base for the second out. Number 9 hitter LF Williamson came up big with his only hit of the game that knocked in Roborecki for a Steamers 2-1 win to tie the Mosquitoes for 1st place. Hard luck loser was Randy Munshower who pitched a great game allowing 2 runs, 1 earned on 5 hits while striking out 4.
In game # 2 the Mosquitoes got back on track with a 6-2 win putting the Mosquitoes ahead of the Steamers by one game.

June 5, 2005 – 08:55 AM
The Cleveland Mosquitoes (9-0) had to scrape together 9 players to pull out an extra inning 4-3 win (8th) over Fairview Bubba Q's Sunday evening at Foltz. The lineup was missing 6 starters and had three pitchers hitting in the lineup. Luckily the pitchers who were thrown into the field were guys who came up big. Bubba Q's struck back in the bottom of the 6th with three runs to tie the game lead by the hot hitting of Bubba Q's player/manager Mike Faile who went 3-4. Clash of the Titans
June 2, 2006 – 11:50 PM
The Westlake Titans are in their 3rd season and have come along way since 2004. The Titans have many young Division I college players who are hungry to make it to the top in Ohio behind the leadership of player/manager Mike Janos and they certainly proved they have the talent to be called one of Ohio's best after tonight.
A pitching dual between Titans LHP Steve Procner (Cleveland St.-Soph.) and Mosquitoes RHP Dominique Rodgers (Kent St.- Soph.) became the focus of this game as Procner struck out 7 and allowed only 2 hits and 1 earned run. The earned run proved to be the difference as Mosquitoes catcher Kevin May (Marietta College) drove a fastball over the leftfield fence for his first home-run of the season. Rodgers worked out of several jams by striking out 5 Titans and allowing only 2 hits. Rodgers went the distance recording his 1st win as a Mosquito and helping raise the Mosquitoes record to 8-0 on the season.
The Mosquitoes will be back in action on Sunday, 6:00pm at Foltz Field v.s. Bubba Q's.
