Benson picked up the triumph, hurling the first four innings. Rick Johnson went the full distance for Proctor and was tagged for 12 hits.

Phil Benson left the game in the sixth inning leading 6-1, but his reliever, Dick Trende, was rapped for two runs in the seventh to close the gap -- but not enough.
Two walks, a hit batsman, another walk, Greg Mjelde's single and then Frank Dumais base-clearing double settled things in the fourth and saw Proctor starter Frank Malec depart after issuing nine walks.

Trojan Nine Nudges Proctor in Playoff
Duluth Central became the seventh team in the eight team District 26 High School Baseball Tournament when it tipped Proctor 2-1 in a playoff game Saturday afternoon at Wade Municipal Stadium.
Duluth Central combined superb hitting and fielding in ousting Proctor. Jerry London spun a two-hit, 11-strikeout game for the Trojans. He walked six, four in the last two innings when he tired. But his curve had the Rails tied up through the fifth inning.
Central scored its first run in the first inning on Rod Hyvonen's single scoring the singling John Hamilton. The other run came in the fifth on an error, Hamilton's double and a wild pitch.
London put out a Proctor rally in the seventh after Jerry Sovari singled home one run and put runners on first and second with two out.

Rails' Soderberg Hurls No-Hitter
...Proctor socked Cotton 20-1 on Chet Soderberg's no-hitter Wednesday in the District 26 high school baseball tournament at Wade Municipal Stadium.
Soderberg's no-hitter stopped Cotton, the South County champ, with but one run, and that was in the first inning on four walks. Soderberg walked six Cotton players as the losers left eight runners stranded.
Don Hanson belted a home run to the base of the centerfield flag pole with one on in the seventh. Soderberg helped his own cause with four hits.
5/27/64 -- Duluth East 9, Proctor 2
...Duluth East crushed Proctor with an eight-hit barrage, including three extra base blows. The score was 9-2.
Proctor and Esko will play a consolation game at 5 p.m. at Wade.
East wasted little time in climbing on Proctor righthander Ron Swenson. The first three batters hit the ball hard, but all were retired.
It was an omen of things to come, however. In the second, the Greyhounds rallied for three runs when Benjie Wolfe and Dick Hawley crashed back to back triples to get things rolling. It was all the support Billy Enrico needed, though he was touched for seven hits.
East scored two more in the fifth and three in the sixth, two of them when shortstop Bob Thompson rapped a double to the left field corner.
Yount was forced out of the game in the third when he sustained a dislocated elbow in a play at first base. Wolfe grounded to third baseman Don Hanson, whose throw pulled Yount, Proctor's first baseman, into the runner at the bag. Yount went sprawling in the collision and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
5/28/64 -- Proctor 9, Esko 6
Proctor defeated Esko 9-6 to take consolation honors Thursday at Wade Stadium, paced by Jerry Sovari's triple and two doubles.

Gornick's No-Hitter Stops Rails for Park
Jimmy Gornick's brilliant no-hitter gave defending champion Morgan Park a 1-0 victory over Proctor in the quarterfinal round of the District 26 high school baseball tournament at Wade Municipal Stadium Tuesday and a place in Thursday's finals against Two Harbors.
Gornick struck out four and walked only two as he fashioned his gem behind some great defensive support by his mates.
Second baseman Tim Mickolajak was a hero in his own right. Mickolajak drove in the game's only run in the fourth inning with a squeeze bunt after Tommy Lindvall was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on an outfield fly. At his defensive position Mickolajak had eight assists and one put out.
It was a tough loss for the Rails' Ron Swenson who gave up only one single, a fifth-inning poke to right field by Jerry Loomis.
Gornick found himself in minor difficulty in the seventh when a walk and an infield error put two Proctor runners on base, but the crafty righthander ended the threat by forcing the next batter to pop up in the infield.
The only Proctor base runner until that time came on a second-inning walk.
The victory avenged Park's only defeat during the regular season, a 3-2, eight-inning decision last month.

5/24/62 -- Duluth East 11, Proctor 1
Proctor's Joe Lane was the pitching victim as East rapped out 10 hits. Chuck Williams' single drove in the Greyhounds' second inning run. They added two more in the third on a walk, Jeff Carson's single and a wild pitch.
East tallied three in the fourth on Williams' double, Bob Hill's single, an error, walk and a passed ball. A walk and singles by Hill, Carson, Ron Lindstrom and Dick DeLano produced three more runs in the fourth.

5/25/61 -- Proctor 5, Two Harbors 3
Gary Denzler pitched and batted Proctor's triumph. Besides hurling a six-hitter, Denzler batted in three runs, one with a third inning homer.
Two Harbors had taken a 3-1 lead in the fifth frame, thanks to a two-run double by Mike Sunde. However, Proctor bounced back with three of its own to win.
District 26 Tournament
5/27/61 -- Duluth East 8, Proctor 0
The no-hitter was hurled by East's Dave Longsio, a righthander, who blanked Proctor, 8-0. It was Longsio's second no-hitter triumph over Proctor this season, the first coming in early season.
Longsio struck out 13 and walked three. He was given good hitting support by Mark Williams, who had a double and single and Bob Hill with two singles. Dick Fisher added a triple for the Greyhounds.
Proctor, which lacked three regulars who were competing in the Region 7 track meet, hit only two balls to the outfield.

5/23/60 -- Proctor 15, Clover Valley 5
Gary Denzler and Joe Lane combined to limit Clover Valley to one hit in five innings at Proctor. Meanwhile, the Rails ripped nine hits off three Cavalier pitchers, including Denny Hanson's triple. Gerry Wedlund was three for three and John Mattson drove in four runs for Proctor.
5/25/60 -- Duluth Central 6, Proctor 1
The Trojans, behind the six-hit pitching of Dan Howard, defeated Proctor 6-1.
Troy backed Howard with nine hits. The big blows were a two-run double by Tom Blair in the fourth and Dennis Morgan's one-run double in the same inning.
Proctor used three pitchers in an effort to stop Duluth Central. The Rails grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Trojans tied it up in the third and wrapped up the decision with three scores in the fourth.
