Donnie Tanner has been involved in slow pitch softball for over 43 years. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, he was a player and key member on some of the powerhouse teams out of the DC Metro area such as Bob Banning Dodge, Stroh’s, Shirt Explosion and Bristol. He continues to play to this day, playing senior softball for Taylor’s and Joe B’s.
Beginning in 1983, Donnie was a USSSA umpire for 20+ years. In addition to calling games in leagues and tournament play, he was a top choice for the big games. He was called on to officiate multiple State Tournament and Major NIT Tournament games.
Since 1991, Donnie has been the President of the Washington Metropolitan Slow Pitch Softball Hall of Fame, one of the oldest regional slow pitch softball HOFs in the country. At the time, there was talk of disbanding the organization due to a lack of participation. Donnie took control of the organization and, under his guidance and leadership, saved the group from extinction. The WMSPS Hall of Fame is entering its 33rd year of recognizing excellence in the game of Slow Pitch Softball.
