Coach Information - Useful Material
Here are notes, links, and documents that will be of use to you:
And here are some great documents the club has harvested over the years. All are worth your time!
- 10 Proven Tips: some good nuggets here that you may know, but not be thinking about. The section on halftime comments is something we should all read every week!
- Best Practices: USYS guidebook and a wealth of great stuff. Although BTSC does not have an official coaching philosophy, this is what we believe in. Great information for all ages and levels of play
- PCA Good Coach: not specific to soccer but good and short. Remember that BTSC mandate is 50% playing time at a minimum for all players
- PCA How to Confront a Coach - this is for parents however it's good for you to read this and think over how you want them to communicate to you and your assistants - you all need to be on the same page with this. One definite rule is that all conversations are held well away from any players. Some coaches request a 24 hour cooling off period to be sure neither party says something in the heat of the moment they'll regret the next day
- Soccer for Dummies: send this to all parents! You'd be surprised how many are only vaguely aware of the rules. Of course you need to assure them they are not dummies in the note you send along with the document. Bonus activity: quiz your players on the rules, asking more difficult questions as they gain knowledge
- Team Management Ideas: a bit of a repeat, but still a good read
- Mental maturity: really good stuff in this. I think we forget about the mental development stages all too often
- Vision: more from USYS - and spoiler alert: BTSC agrees that it should be all about player development. Almost every time I speak directly with players post-match I ask how they and their team played. And almost every time they respond with the final score. And I point out that was not my question nor what I care about
- Team management - several pages of good stuff covering all aspects of your team: training, players, parents and ways to be better with all of the above. There are further links to even more great information, and you can sign up for an email newsletter that often includes training sessions
