CR #10: Naamans Lightning Policy

If lightning is within 10 miles, get inside a building--not a shed or a dugout--or a car, and remain there for 30 minutes after the storm has passed before retaking the field.

How do you know if it's within 10 miles?

  • If you can hear thunder, you're within 10 miles.  In fact, it's probably a good deal closer, since 10 miles is about as far as thunder is audible under perfect conditions, and Concord Pike does not provide perfect conditions.

  • The Weatherbug app has a feature called "Spark" that will tell your distance to the nearest lightning event.  Click this link for more information about the app.  Lightning can be seen from much farther away than 10 miles, but, again, can often be heard only at distances within 10 miles.  If you can see what seems to be distant lightning, and you can't hear any thunder, therefore, it's a bit of a judgment call.  That lightning could be within the 10 mile ring, and the sound is just not traveling well.  Please download the app.
