Hello,

I have arranged with a church to use their open field.  It's not the greatest field, but since its private property, I feel good about setting up one complete field and scheduling a 4-team, double elimination tournament.  With that, I'm announcing soCA Wiffle's first event of 2020 on Sat., Aug 8th at 9am in Upland, CA.  I'm looking for the first 3 teams to respond, and solo players are welcome to play too (you'll be playing on my team).

Teams can be 2-4 players.  There will be times you aren't playing.. Winner bracket games are 4 innings. All loser bracket games are 3 innings.  Playing format can be found on unitedwiffleball.com (Fast Pitch, big bat, scuffed ball, no baserunning)

Please email me, DM, text me to sign up your team, or yourself.

This tourney will be just for fun.  No fees.  No cash prize.  Just good 'ol fashion wiffleball with bragging rights.

We wouldn’t be able to play without someone driving by and calling the city, county, state, and the President that we are playing wiffleball in the park. So, soCA Wiffle is without a current schedule.

who wants to play on the street in front of my house?

"Tune up for Texas" Fast Pitch Tournament

Sat., Sep 14, 2019
Start at 9am!

@Sierra Vista Park
450 E 15th St.
Upland, CA 91786

$60 a team - pay at field.
2-5 players on a team. No age limit.

Sign up by by emailing mocabeenow@gmail.com your teamname and the names of the players on your team.
Fast Pitch Tournament (Fast Plastic Rule Book - www.fastplastic.us)

Current Payout TBD

Tourney format: Based on 8 teams
Round Robin play - Teams will be playing 3 round robin games, playing the other teams in their group (see below). Round Robin games will be 4-innings.  Overall standings will be decided by Win-Loss record, then Run Differential, then Head-to-Head, then Coin Flip.  Every team makes it to the 8-Team Single Elimination Bracket.  Standings will create seeding 1-8 for the Single elimination bracket.

Before each game starts in Round Robin, a player from each team will take turns "throwing to the k-zone" from the mound to decide who is Home team. Throw to the k-zone until someone hits it and the other misses. If both players hit it, or miss it... do it again.

Playoff Bracket - Single Elimination. 4-inning games. Championship Game will be 5 innings. Home team is the higher seed.

There are No Extra Innings in Round Robin games.
Extra innings in playoffs will be as follows:
1st Extra Inn - Normal
2nd Extra Inn - Normal
3rd Extra Inn - Start with Runner on 1st
4th Extra Inn - Start with Runners on 1st and 2nd
5th Extra Inn and So On- Start with Bases Loaded

Every team is guaranteed to play 4 games.
There are no pitching/inning restrictions.
Mercy Rule: 10 runs after 1 inning or 15 runs ends a 1/2 inning. Example: If a team is up 15-0 in the top of the 1st, then the 1/2 inning is over and the home team will come to bat and need 6 runs to keep the game alive. Anytime there is a 15 run lead by the visiting team, the half inning will end.

We will follow the Fast Plastic rule book.
I will have a printed copy available at the tournament. Look at defense, how runners move from base to base, and other offensive and defensive strategies.  You must bring your own wiffle balls and bats. Balls can be scuffed per the rulebook. Check out YouTube videos to make a quality scuffed ball (if you prefer).

6th Annual Wiffle Cup

Fast and Medium (Yard) Pitch Tournament

Sat., August 10, 2019

Email me to sign up your team! mocabeenow@gmail.com

Start at 9am! (Please be there by 8:45 to get warmed up and begin a brief team meeting at 9am and first pitch at 9:15am)

@Sierra Vista Park
450 E 15th St.
Upland, CA 91786

$60 a team
2-5 players on a team. No age limit.

Current Payout TBD

Tourney format is similar to the World Cup: Based on 8 teams
Group play - Teams will be playing 3 round robin games, playing the other teams in their group. The standings within your group will seed you in the Single-Elimination Bracket. Round robin games will be 4-innings.  Standings are decided by Win-Loss record, then Run Differental, then Head-to-Head.

Before each game starts in Group Play, a player from each team will take turns throwing to the k-zone (from 48" mound) to decide who is Home team. Throw to k-zone until someone hits it and the other misses. If both players hit it, or miss it... do it again. Home team will decide if game is Fast or Yard (Medium-Pitch). Teams can also decide to play "rock-paper-scissors".

Playoff Bracket - Single Elimination. 4-inning games. Championship Game will be 5 innings. Home team is the higher seed and decides Fast or Yard Rules. If the same seeds meet in the Final Game (1A v 1B or 2A v 2B, etc), players will throw to the zone for Home team and choose gameplay rules. The losing Semifinal teams can play a 3rd Place Game (4 Innings) for $60, or call it a day and split it.

There are No Extra Innings in Group Play games.

Mercy Rule: 10 runs after 1 inning or 15 runs ends a 1/2 inning. Example: If a team is up 15-0 in the top of the 1st, then the 1/2 inning is over and the home team will come to bat and need 6 runs to keep the game alive. Anytime there is a 15 run lead by the visiting team, the half inning will end.

We will follow GSWL rules for both. They are different. Please review.
http://www.goldenstickwiffle.com/2014/images/PDFLINKS/2015RuleBook51215.pdf
Please review before showing up. Only worry about gameplay rules. You can save them to your phone. I will have a printed copy available at the tournament. All team, league, and inning limits do not apply to our tournament. Look at defense, how runners move from base to base, and other offensive and defensive strategies.  Some major differences between the two rules are the bats you play with. Medium Pitch games use only modified original yellow wiffle bats (extended and allows for bike tube around the barrel), or Moonshot Moonstix. Fast Pitch you can have up to 2 3/4" barrel plastic bat. If you don't have one, go to Target and pick up a MLB Powerhouse for $7, or the Black Easton at Walmart for $5. Those should keep you competitive. You must bring your own wiffle balls and bats. Balls can be scuffed per the GSWL rulebook. Check out YouTube videos to make a quality scuffed ball (if you prefer).
Other differences are Medium-pitch rules start with an 0-1 count and the mound is closer. For this tournament, Each team can have a pitcher and 3 fielders on the field for either gameplay (this an adjustment for Yard). I will go over those differences and other info before first pitch on Sat. Please email me with any questions leading up to the tourney.

Thank you to all who drove out to compete in the Fast Pitch tourney on July 13th. It was a fun day of wiffleball and the 2-man pairing of Sylvie Serrano and Pete Taynton (OBombers) leave with $200 beating the Vipers from Phoenix, AZ.

Next tournament is the "6th Annual Wiffle Cup" on Sat., Aug 10th. More info about that tournament will be up soon.

"Tune up for Texas" Results

So proud of the way teams and players showed up and wanted to play the best competition before heading to Texas. Better Than You Probably stole the story on Saturday with the biggest fan base a new team (or old) has ever had.  A touching story of their teammate and friend who passed away a month ago, and started their first pitch in the first game with only 2 on the field to honor their friend and his family (30-40 strong who were there cheering and rooting them on all day). Life is bigger than wiffleball. May God bless his family and friends

Las Vegas Wifflers are the unofficial champions of this tournament going undefeated, and wasn't able to play the Whippets in the final game due to the setting sun. They finish the day 6-0 with two wins against GSW and another big win versus OBombers.  Steve Trzpis gets the unofficial tourney MVP (10 IP - 1 ER)for his arm and bat. Honorable Mention goes to Randy Dalbey of the Whippets, going 3-0 and pitched 13IP - 3ER. The Whippets WC earned their way to the final game after a 2nd round loss to OBombers and working 3 wins in a row through the losers bracket, beating Change Ups, GSW, and then OBombers in the last game of the night.

5 of the 8 teams had players making their way to Texas in October, and all of them appreciated the warm-up and high-level competition before going for the National Championships and $10,000!

Standings after Round Robin

1. Las Vegas Wifflers 3-0 +25

2. Whippets WC 2-0-1 +20

3. OBombers 2-0-1 +16

4. GSW 2-1 +23

5. Change Ups 1-2 -9

6. Bash Bros 1-2 -19

7. Better Than You Probably 0-3 -25

8. High Desert Lit Sticks 0-3 -29

Double Elim Bracket

LVW over HD Lit Sticks 10-0

Whippets over BTYP 10-0

oBombers over Bash Bros 13-3

GSW over Change Ups 4-0

LVW over GSW 1-0

OBombers over Whippets 7-2

Change Ups over HD Lit Sticks (score not recorded)

Bash Bros over BTYP (score not recorded)

Fast and Medium (Yard) Pitch Tournament

Before each game starts (pool play only), teams will throw to the zone to decide Home team, Home team will decide if game is Fast or Yard(medium pitch). In Double Elimination games, higher seed is home team and decides game play (so winning pool play games is worth a lot).  Current format is based on 8 teams: 2 groups of 4.  play every team in group (similar to World Cup) Group Standings create 8 team double elimination bracket.

All rules will follow GSWL rules for both. They are different for each format.

Current Teams and captains are: 8 (as of 7/20)
Whippets WC - Moc
Elmo's World - Ryan K
S.C.I. Foxes - Allan V
High Desert Lit Sticks - Ben C
Over the Hills - Andy R and Dave

Fast Plastic Regional Tourney

Five teams battled it out on Sat, June 30th in the first Fast Plastic event in SoCA since 2010 (Organized by Rich Ewald). The fast pitch format brought out 2 experienced teams (Moonshots and Elmo's World) who were picked to be there in the end, two middle of the road teams (Whippets WC and HD Lit Sticks) and a brand new team from Catalina (SCI Foxes).

After a quick 2-game round robin, the SCI Foxes earned the #1 seed, which gave them the first round bye and made the Moonshots (Sylvie Serrano and Rob Colon) face off against Elmo's World (Ryan Kaufman, Jeremy Launder, and Pete Taynton). With Pete Taynton on the mound, and saving Kaufman for the final 11 innings of the tourney, Elmo's World shutout The Moonshots 1-0. The 5-inning battle took a tole on Sylvie's stamina as he didn't have anything left in the tank when they would eventually work their way thru the loser's bracket and lose 11-1.

The surprise team was SCI (Santa Catalina Island) Foxes lead by their captain, Allan Vega. He threw every inning except for one or two. It was their first ever Wiffle tournament and learned a lot of about saving Allan for later in the tourney. They fought hard when facing Elmo's World and a fresh Ryan Kaufman (6 years from last time he pitched) in the 2nd Round and lost 8-0. They went 3-2 on the day and finished 3rd, and I expect them to be contenders again on August 4th at the 5th Annual Wiffle Cup.

Whippets WC, lead by Moc and creating a team of a 15 yr old newcomer, and a 40+ yr old East Coast Wiffle transplant made it difficult to beat the top 3 teams. Moc had to pitch every inning and ran out of gas in the middle of the 2nd inning of the 1st round matchup (after winning the play-in game versus the HD Lit Sticks) versus the SCI Foxes. Moc's HR off of Launder, Vega (2), and Serrano were not enough to overcome the stamina of pitching all day.

The High Desert Lit Sticks were brand new to fast pitch, and didn't have the pitching velocity to out pitch the other 4 teams. They are a competitive medium pitch team and have already signed up for the 5th Annual Wiffle Cup. They also had the 2nd best team uniforms out there. SCI Foxes were looking good.

Moonshots lost to Elmo's World in all 3 matchups and won every other game (4-3). Rob Colon is still the most feared hitter in the country. If they can grab one more quality arm for Texas, they will have a fighting chance.

If timing and money wasn't an issue, then I think Elmo's World could be a top 4 finisher at the Texas Open. They all mash. Launder can throw one game. Taynton can go 2-3. And Kaufman is a proven ace (Gunslingers 2012 - 14 innings 0 ER at GSWL OPEN).

Go to my Facebook and watch the featured game from each round of the playoffs. See you all on Saturday, Aug 4th!

Before each game starts (pool play only), teams will throw to the zone to decide Home team, Home team will decide if game is Fast or Yard. In Double Elimination games, higher seed is home team and decides game play.

Please review before showing up. You can save them to your phone. Only worry about gameplay rules. All team, league, and inning limits do not apply to our tournament. Please ask me any questions leading up to the tourney. I will go over a few reminders before tourney starts.

You must bring your own wiffle balls and bats. For the new teams, look at the bats you need to play with for Yard and Fast. Yard (Medium) Pitch games use only modified original yellow wiffle bats or Moonshot Moonstix. Fast Pitch you can have up to 2 3/4" Barrel Plastic bat. If you don't have one, go to Target and pick up a Powerhouse for $7, that should keep you competitive.

Every team is guaranteed to play 4 games.

There are no pitching/inning restrictions.

League Title goes to Whippets WC

Whippets beat the Bombers in 4 games winning the series 3 to 1. Peter Mocabee fires off 17 innings with no runs. Bombers won Game 2 in extra innings in Total Bases with a walk off single. Moc hits 3 solo home runs (1 in Game 1 and 2 in Game 4) to lead the offense verses great pitching of the Bombers pitching.

S.P. Bombers finish off the day beating the Whippets for their first loss of the season. Natural Roy Hobbs lose in a 0-0 tie (5-2 Totals Bases) to open up the day, and lose a 1-run nail biter against the Bombers. Another great week for the SoCA Wiffle League. This league will only get better with time. Standings and stats are updated. Next games are April 14th!

2018 SoCA Wiffle Legue is underway. 3 teams got the season off to a great start. Results and Standings are up-to-date. Stats can be seen if you click on your team. Looks like Andy from the Whippets is currently leading in AVG. Moc leads in HR and RBI. No pitching stats because I dont know who pitched against who. Hope to have our Vegas and Arizona teams in March. More are welcome. $60 a team. Playoffs for the money is in May.

Hey Everybody,

I hope everybody had a good Christmas and winter vacation.  i would like to get an idea of how many people are interested in meeting once a month for a wiffleball league starting in Feb.  My tentative schedule is to start on Sat, Feb. 10th.  And then play on Mar 17th, April 14th, and then May 12th.  Pretty much the 2nd Saturday of every month except for March (which i'm not available on the 2nd Saturday). This league will be $20 per player (to ensure consistency) for the whole season (Feb-May).  All money will go back to the players in the end.  May 12th will be final playoff tournament for the $, so your team and players that played need to be there.  Prize pool and payouts TBD.  I keep nothing (unless my team wins of course.. let's go!)

League style will be Medium Pitch/Non-running/Skinny Bats.
We will be playing Yard rules published by GSWL.
Review them at http://www.goldenstickwiffle.com/2014/images/PDFLINKS/2016RuleBook5-13.pdf

I plan to partner with GSWL when their Yard season starts, and be included in the National Standings.  More to come on that when more info comes from GSWL.  For now, this "Spring" league is separate from anything we do associated with GSWL.

Each team needs to have 3-5 players.  4 players would be ideal.  If you have a team set, email me and i'll put you on the list.  If you are a single players, or you and a buddy, we'll form teams with other players like you.  No problem.  Just let me know you're in.

Thanks guys, and I can't wait to play wiffleball again.
Peter "Moc" Mocabee

Wiffle Cup

Whippets WC wins the 3rd Annual Wiffle Cup by defeating the Circle City Giants in the final game 7-0.  CCG's won game one of the Finals to give the Whippets their first loss in the double elimination tournament, 4-3. But the two-man crew of Jeremy Launder and Peter Mocabee of Whippets WC were too much for Pete Taynton's great pitching to hold off...

1st Place: Whippets WC $190

2nd Place: Circle City Giants $80

3rd Place: Upland Angels $30

4th Place: Wiffle This!
