Seals have a Tie and a Loss in So Cal

July 9, 2007
In the ocean, nets are a bad thing to a Seal.  But on the pitch . . .

The Seals traveled to Southern California for the first of three straight weekends of double matches to finish the season.

"We tied the San Fernando Valley Quakes 0-0 in a fierce match," stated Paul Aigbogun, Seals Head Coach, "but neither team could find the net.  Both Keepers did an outstanding job throughout the game."

So outstanding in fact that Seals Keeper Eric Conner earned a spot on the PDL Team of the Week.  "Eric came up with six saves, two of which were really critical for us and preserved the tie" added Aigbogun.

The Quakes are currently in first place with 32 points, and stand the best chance of any team in the league of earning a playoff spot at the moment.

The Seals took a loss in Ventura as they took on the second place Ventura County Fusion.   The Seals meant business, but a quick 8th minute goal - one the Seals tendencies this season has been to give up a quick goal - put the Seals in a catch-up position once again.

But make no mistake here, the Seals did not fold.  "We sealed the defense (no pun intended) and only allowed one shot on goal which Eric saved," noted Aigbogun.  "Our attack was dangerous, particularly late in the game.  But we continued to have bad breaks and goalies having great games, and the back of the net alludes us."

For the Fusion, the season saving goal against the Seals this past Sunday was scored by Gabe Farfan when he lofted a ball over the keeper’s head and off the far post . . . and . . . into the net. Fusion keeper Bryan Hill solidified the victory, making two excellent point blank saves to deny the Seals an equalizer during spells of heavy defensive pressure, and made 5 saves overall.

“It was a very physical game,” said Fusion General Manager Ranbir Shergill.

For Aigbogun, it's really pretty simple: "All we want to do is to find the net!"
