Seals Leave Washington State with 4 points from the WeekendJune 12, 2006
The Seals are happy to say goodbye to the State of Washington! "We would have loved to come home with two wins, but anytime you travel and have two games in two days you have to be satisfied with a win and a tie." said Tom Simpson, coach and general manager of the San Francisco Seals. "These guys play solid soccer. We had two 90 minute games of tough soccer."
And that's what the Seals got, with a 2-2 tie against the Tacoma FC, and a 2-1 win this weekend against the Yakima Reds.
The Seals took the early lead in Saturday's game against Tacoma. John Carson (Bakersfield) playing the left wing, got the first goal of the game off a Shani Simpson (SF Glens) assist. The Seals held on to that lead until the the second half, when Tacoma tied the game in the 60th minute as Seals goalkeeper Geremy Uhl (USF) mistakenly sent the ball directly to a Tacoma player who then scored. With a momentum swing that often accompanies a goal, Tacoma took the lead eight minutes later. Late in the second half Shani Simpson broke into the box and was taken down with a scissor. Penalty kick (Diaz); goal; tie game.
The Seals scored a third goal when Chris Rodd (USF) kicked a goal kick that Carlos Diaz (St. Mary's) picked off for a goal. The referee called Carlos offside, but later realized that the kick had come from a goal kick. Apology accepted Mr. Referee, but then, the win would have been nice! Hey . . . it happens . . . Sunday we went to Yakima for our game against the Reds, less than 24 hours after our game against Tacoma. About fifteen minutes into the game the defense gave up a goal to the Reds. But rather than spur their momentum, the Seals got going. Diaz put in the first Seals goal about five minutes later off an assist from Rawlston Masaniai (SF Glens), who was back in action after missing two games from an injury sustained against the Bakersfield Brigade back on the 27th of May. Six minutes later the Seals took the final lead as Diaz once again finished a fine ball sent in by Carson. The game was a tough 90 minutes, but neither side was able to earn another goal, dispite opportunities.
The Seals remain in first place with 19 points, just one point ahead of the Southern California Seahorses.
The Seals take on the Bakersfield Brigade this Sunday (June 18th) at USF. The Seals will be honoring Marques White starting about 1:40 pm before the 2:00pm kickoff. Tickets are available through the Seals website.
