Below are Universal Rules relating to all Divisions

1.     Universal Rule of the SJMSBL For all Divisions: The regular season will NOT be extended

2.     Universal Rule of the SJMSBL For all Divisions: Rules will NOT be changed during the regular or Playoff Season. If you have a rule change… Save it for next year’s Divisional Meeting. Managers will then have the opportunity to discuss and Vote on the rule.

3.     Universal Rule of the SJMSBL For all Divisions: The Playoffs will be completed before Labor Day

4.      Universal Rule of the SJMSBL For all Divisions: 2023 MLB NEW pickoff rule & NEW pitch Clock rule will NOT apply to the SJMSBL.

5.     Each 9-inning game shall have a three-hour time limit.  Each 7-inning game shall have a 2.5-hour time limit.  The clock starts running upon the actual start of play (the 1st pitch), not the scheduled start of play.  The time at the last out of the prior inning determines if the time limit has expired (not the time at the start of the next inning).  Once an inning has started, it shall be played to its completion.  Games that are tied at the end of the time limit end as a TIE. The game remains an official tie and shall be included as such in the standings.  This shall not apply to playoff games. Play continues until a winner is determined. In a Playoff Game, if a game is tied at the end of the game. The game will be played until there is a winner. The new MLB rule of starting an extra inning with a runner at second base does NOT apply to the SJMSBL.

In a Playoff Game, if a game is tied at the end of the game. The game will be played until there is a winner. The new MLB rule of starting an extra inning with a runner at second base does NOT apply to the SJMSBL.

7.     Universal Rule of the SJMSBL For all Divisions: Please do not include Lou or Neil in any group text or emails with your team and other teams. Make the determinations then let us know of any decisions

8.     Universal Rule of the SJMSBL For all Divisions: The maximum number of players on a roster is 20. Over 20 players on a roster cost is $100.00 per player. No deadline in adding a player but team must pay $100 per player if added after May 28

9.     Universal Rule of the SJMSBL For all Divisions: Player needs to play and or bat in at least 6 regular-season games to qualify for the playoffs. If a player only plays in the field as a defensive player or runner, it is the managers duty to have opposing manager write that players participate in the scorebook for that said game.

10.   Universal Rule of the SJMSBL For all Divisions: -  All stats need to be entered no later than 7/16. Stats should be entered weekly to avoid confusion at the end. Games played are required in the stats.

11.  Universal Rule of the SJMSBL For all Divisions: Make-Ups need to be scheduled no later than 6/25 any rainouts that occur in the last month of the season need to be scheduled by the last Sunday of the season, failure to schedule make-ups will result in 0 points in the standings.

12. Teams without a home field will be the away team

Rules specific to the 55+ Division(s)

If we get more teams or if teams leave before the season starts, we’ll conduct a Zoom meeting to vote and determine changes

In 2024 players aged 54 (during the calendar year) will be allowed to play and Pitch and Catch

In 2024 players aged 52 (during the calendar year) will be grandfathered into the 55+ Divi In 2024 players aged 52 (during the calendar year) will be grandfathered into the 55+ Division. Unless otherwise stated player will NOT be allowed to pitch or catch.

In 2025 players aged 53 (during the calendar year) will be grandfathered into the 55+ Divi In 2022 players aged 53 (during the calendar year) will be grandfathered into the 55+ Division. Unless otherwise stated player will NOT be allowed to pitch or catch.

In 2026 players aged 54 (during the calendar year) will be grandfathered into the 55+ Divi In 2022 players aged 54 (during the calendar year) will be grandfathered into the 55+ Division. Unless otherwise stated player will NOT be allowed to pitch or catch.

• The outfielder cannot throw a Batter out from Outfield.

•      Unlimited Courtesy Runners @ 1ST Base needs to be last batted out

Courtesy runners cannot steal. A courtesy runner is declared out for an official stolen base. Courtesy runners may advance on a wild pitch, passed ball or error, but NOT on any play that an official scorer would deem a stolen base.

For example, with runners on first and third base where the runner on third is a courtesy runner, the runner on first base can steal second, but the courtesy runner on third cannot try to score on the throw to second, as that would be scored a stolen base. The courtesy runner would be declared out for an official stolen base. If however, the throw to second goes into center field, the runner on third can try to score as that would be scored an error, not a stolen base.

Similarly, if a courtesy runner is on base and a pitcher tries to pick him off, the courtesy runner must return to that base. If the courtesy runner cannot get back safely and instead makes a move toward the next base, he would be declared out.

If the pitcher elects to pitch from a windup, a courtesy runner may advance (regardless of the score) because an official scorer would not award a stolen base. He would record the advance as “defensive indifference”. The first baseman is not required to “hold the runner on base”.

Penalty: Courtesy runners who attempt to steal a base are declared out immediately if the official scoring would record it as a stolen base. The ball is dead, all other runners return to the previous base (no pitch to the batter, even if the batter gets a hit). Any runner who attempts to steal a base with a lead of 10 or more runs is also declared out. Exception – if the courtesy runner attempts a delayed steal, after the catcher receives the pitch, the pitch stands as called, and the courtesy runner is declared out.

Please note that pinch runners are different from courtesy runners. A pinch runner is a player not yet in the batting lineup who runs for another player and assumes that spot in the batting order. A pinch runner can steal, and the player he ran for is out of the batting lineup for the remainder of the game.

•      If a team is winning by 10 or more Runs. The winning team is not allowed to steal. Up by 10 Runs needs to be announced. If after announced, player still STEALS, He is out with “no warning”.

•      Please note the exception: Player can run (if up by 10) as soon as the ball pitched hits ground.
