The Anderson Wrestling Team Wants You!
No experience is necessary----Just a desire to learn and willingness to compete!

The wrestling team is one of  Anderson High School's most successful sports, and we need boys and girls of all sizes to help fill out our Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. Most 1st year wrestlers will wrestle JV, but we frequently need underclassmen to fill varsity spots at the lower weight classes.

There are many benefits from participating in the sport of wrestling:

> Wrestling builds character. Winning at wrestling depends on hard work, courage, and mental toughness as much as athletic ability. Anyone can succeed at wrestling if they are willing to put their mind to it.  Wrestlers learn the value of preparation and hard work and the role it plays in achieving one¡¦s life goals. What wrestlers learn on the mat can be transferred to real life experiences. Wrestlers are self-reliant, mentally and physically fit, have a great work ethic, and are self-disciplined, competitive and responsible. Wrestlers also tend to be goal oriented and very confident.

> Wrestling provides a great opportunity for athletes of all sizes. You will only compete against opponents that are your own weight. Our 106 lb. wrestler is just as important to the team as our 285 lb. wrestler.  We need freshmen and sophomores to fill many of the lower weight classes, and you could have a chance to earn a varsity spot and varsity letter as a freshman.  The boys weight divisions are 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215 and 285 pounds.  Girls weight divisions are 100, 107, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 165, 185 and 235 pounds.

>You will get in the best shape of your life. Wrestlers are perhaps the best-conditioned athletes of any sport. Every workout builds strength, endurance, agility, and aerobic fitness, and with it self confidence in one's body and physical abilities.

> Wrestling teaches self-defense.  Scholastic wrestling has been proven to be the most effective means of self-defense. The one thing many champions of mixed martial arts sporting events have in common is their background in scholastic wrestling. Wrestling skills consistently win over karate, boxing, and other forms of self-defense.

If you are interested in participating, sign up for the wrestling class during 8th period.  If you decide later wrestling is not for you, you can easily transfer into 8th period PE.   After school practice starts in October. Dual meets are generally on Wednesday nights, and tournaments are on Saturdays.

"I have seen first hand how wrestling has helped many players in the NFL-including the development of their upper body, hand control, and use of leg strength. Wrestling skills help a football player move quickly to the point of attack, putting one's body in position to neutralize a play, and take control of a match-up."
---Rich Gannon - Oakland Raider's Quarterback and 2001 Pro Bowl MVP

"If you decide to give wrestling a try, be prepared to get involved in a wildly exciting and exceptional activity. But be warned, the sport has a tendency to give tests first, then the lessons."
---Wade Schalles, 2x NCAA wrestling champion

NFL All-Pro receiver Roddy White talks about wrestling

Roddy White is known as being one of the top receivers in the NFL. But what most might not know is that White was a two-time high school state wrestling champion from James Island, S.C.  White visited the Olympic Training Center with 10 wrestlers from his alma mater as USA Wrestling is launching a promotional campaign aimed at the benefits of wrestling for football players and vice versa.
