2016 ALL STAR GAME

The 2016 Delaware Semi Pro Baseball League All Star Game was played last night, July 22nd at Frawley Stadium and what an exciting game it was. The Gold Team, made up from players from the league leading Duffie's Tavern, Delaware Angels and CSERT was the Home Team and asserted themselves from the bottom of the first inning. After a single by Troy Drummond and a walk by Josh Shimp, Jordan Oncay hit a 2 RBI single to take the lead. The Gold repeated in the 2nd inning. After singles by Wooters and Forwood, Troy Drummond came up to smash a 2 RBI triple. Dave Eisner managed to keep the Blue Team quiet for the first 3 innings, Ryan Mattes settled down in the 3rd and 4th, giving up no runs and striking out 4. The Blue Team managed to score a run in the 4th after Bucco, Nick Macey hit a 2B and Blue Coat, Seth Dogerty picked up the RBI on a single. The Gold Team came alive again in the 6th inning by scoring 4 more runs with a hit by Rich DiNardo, a HBP by CSERT's Fielding Wooters, a ROE by Duffie's Tyler Hrycak, a FC by Angels Jake Erskine, a 1B by CSERT Tanner Cebula and another RBI for Angel Troy Drummond off an E6 by the Blue Team. In the top of the 7th inning the Blue Team Bats came alive. With CSERT's Connor PiJuan on the mound, Blue Coat, Steven Mojica started the inning with a 1B and was followed by Blue Coat, Zach Gemberling with another 1B. Bucco, John (Tuto) Rodriguez came through with an RBI 1B and was followed by Buccos and Blue Team Manager, Matt Trate who came through with a 2 RBI 2B. Blue Coat Dom Wyshinsky was next with a 1-3 groundout with an RBI. At this point the Gold Team went to relief pitcher Jake Hoffstein. Home Mattress players, Forbes and Albright came up for the Blue Team and  both hit singles scoring another run for the Blue Team. Next batter, Seth Dorety was HBP and Hoffstein managed to K the next batter. Zach Gemberling managed to draw a BB and Bucco John Rodriguez followed with an RBI single. Hoffstein got the third out of the inning by inducing a fly ball to RF. The 7th inning was now a 9-9 tie game. With Blue Team and Bucco pitcher Chad Jenkins on the mound in the bottom of the 8th inning, the Angels' Troy Drummond managed to draw a BB and proceded to steal 2B. Jordan Oncay moved him to 3B on a 6-3 groundout. With Chad Jenkins pitching to Rich DiNardo, Troy Drummond took off and managed to successfully score on a stolen base. The Gold Team now had the lead at 10-9. In the top of the 9th inning, the Blue Teams' DJ Burns lead off with a 1B followed by a BB for Steven Mojica and another BB by Zach Gemberling. After a popout to !B, Matt Trate hit a Sac Fly to left field scoring DJ Burns and tying the score again at 10 to 10. The Blue Team put Blue Coat, Matt Sheehan in to pitch the bottom of the 9th inning. Angels player Alex Riley lead off the inning with a 2B to LF and moved to 3B on a 1-3 groundout. With one out and the go-ahead run sitting on 3B, the Blue Team decided to gamble and intentionally walk the next batter in order to try to induce a ground ball double play to send the game into extra innings or end it in a tie. Duffies' Kyle Hayman stepped up to bat next and after a 1-1 count  hit a line drive just fair down the first base line to seal the win for the Gold Team. This was truly an exciting game for the sizeable crowd that turned out and all of the great players who participated. There was one player whose game really stood out this night going 2 for 4 with a 3B, 1B a BB, 3SB and 3 RBIs and was named the 2016 Delaware Semi Pro Baseball League All Star Game MVP. Congratulations, TROY DRUMMOND.

BEST OF 7 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES IS SET!!!!!

The 2015 Best of 7 Championship Series is set with the #1 & #2 Seeds ready to go. The Athletes Edge BUCCOS will host the Delaware Blue Coats at Eder Park on Monday night August 17th. Game time is 7:30pm.

The Blue Coats clinched the Best of 5 Semi Final Series on FFiday night, taking Game #4 by a score of 2-0. It was another classic pitchers duel with Home Mattress veteran Clint Kuhl taking the mound determined to force a Game #5 and Blue Coats hurler, Zach Cooney determined to clinch the Series now. Both pitchers were able to keep any players from crossing home plate until the top of the 6th inning when DJ Miller came to bat for the Blue Coats. The Blue Coats had the top of their lineup due to bat. Clint Kuhl was able to get the first two batters, Jared Santak and Zach Gemberling to ground out 4-3 & 1-3. The #3 batter, Dom Wyshinski was determined to get on base any way he could. After working the count full and fouling of three pitches, he was able to draw a walk and  was able to steal 2B. Next at bat was Chris Doherty who also worked the count full and drew a walk. Then it was DJ Miller's turn and the bBlue Coats dugout couldn't help but think back to two nights before when they were down 3-2 and their last at bat in the top of the 7th inning. With the bases loaded and the count at 2-1, Miller laced what turned out to be, a game winning Grand Slam over the left center field fence. But would Home Mattress choose to walk Miller or pitch to him was on the minds of the Blue Coats players. The veteran Kuhl, with his gutsy "all in" way of playing the game, chose to pitch to Miller. DJ was looking for that one pitch he cold get his barrel on. With the count at 2-2, he found that pitch and hit a triple to left center which scored Wyshinski and Doherty which turned out to be the runs the Blue Coats needed to clinch the Series.

SEMI FINALS UPDATE!!!!

Congratulations are in order for the Athletes Edge Buccos again this year. The Buccos clinched their Best of 5 Semi Finals Series with a 10-1 win over Damiani Tile Tigers and going   3-0 in the Series. The Buccos took Game #1 by a score of 9-0, Game #2 was 3-0. The Damiani Tile Tigers should also be congratulated for making it to the playoffs in a year that almost saw them withdrawing from the season when 4 of their key players suffered injuries which reduced their roster to a dangerous level. Through the generosity of some of the other Semi Pro teams they were able to battle on as these other teams offered several players to the Tigers which allowed them to play out the season and make it to the Playoffs.

The Buccos can now sit back and wait for the winner of the other Best of 5 Semi Final Series between Home Mattress Center and the Delaware Blue Coats. Home Mattress won Game #1 by a score of 8-2. Game #2 was a pitching duel for most of the way between the Blue Coats Dennis Massari and Home Mattress' JP Black. In the 6th inning, Blue Coats closer, Matt Anderson managed to strike out the first batter then walked the next batter. Skorup came to bat next for Home Mattress and hit a single. The next batter was hit by a pitch which loaded the bases. Mark Forbes came to bat next and was also hit by a pitch allowing Home Mattress to go up 3-2. Anderson was able to get Clint Kuhl to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. The Blue Coats last chance came in the top of the 7th with their 9, 1, & 2 batters due up Jan Parson woked the count full and after fouling off two pitches was able to draw a walk. Jared Santak came up next and hit a little pop up that fell in between the catcher, third baseman and the pitcher. With a quick reaction, pitcher JP Black was able to fire the ball to 2B and get the runner who was half way waiting to see if the pop up was caught. At this point Home Mattress made a pitching change to DiSabatino who after going to a full count managed to strike out the batter. Chris Doherty managed to work the count full and drew a walk which loaded the bases. With 2 outs, DJ miller came to bat hoping to get a base hit or draw a walk to tie the game but with a 2-1 count Miller laced a Grand Slam over the left centerfield fence to put the Blue Coats up 6-3. Home Mattress came to bat in the bottom of the 7th with their 2, 3 & 4 batters due up. Matt Anderson got the first batter to ground out 6-3. The next batter drew a walk. Matt Armour came to bat next and jumped on the first pitch from Anderson but it was a short pop up to Blue Coats third baseman Alex Zweir who made the catch and quickly threw to 1B catching the runner before he could get back and secured the win for the Blue Coats.

Game 3 was played on Thursday night at Banning Park with Ridge Herman pitching for the Blue Coats and Matt Armour pitching for Home Mattress. After throwing 3 scoreless innings for Home Mattress Matt Armour gave up 2 singles and 2 doubles in the fourth with all 4 baserunners scoring. DJ Miller came up big for the Blue Coats again with 2 RBI's off his double, Dom Wyshinski managed an RBI with a SAC Fly to RF and Jake Bartlett had the other RBI off of a 6-3 groundout. Ridge Herman pitched a full game, only giving up 1 ER, 5 Hits, 2 BB and 8 K's. Jeff Skorup had the sole RBI for Home Mattress after Rick Brutchey lead off the inning with a double and Skorup bringing him in with a double of his own. the Final Score was Blue Coats - 4    Home Mattress - 1  Blue Coats now lead the Series 2 games to 1

Home Mattress and the Blue Coats will play Friday night 7:00pm at Banning Park. Home Mattress is hoping to tie the Series at 2 games apiece and the Blue Coats are hoping to get the win and clinch the Series. This should be a good one. Come out and enjoy the game.

ATHLETE'S EDGE BUCCOS DO IT AGAIN!!!!

.   Congratulations are in order for the Athlete's Edge Buccos for clinching the Regular Season Championship once again by beating the Damani Tile Tigers 2-0 Tuesday night and securing the #1 Seed for the Playoffs. Weather permitting the Playoffs will start on Monday, August 10th with the Buccos facing the #4 Seed and the #2 Seed, Delaware Blue Coats facing the #3 Seed, Home Mattress Center. The Damiani Tile Tigers are currently the #4 Seed but a win tonight by Duffie's Tavern can force a one game elimination between them and Damiani Tile for that last Playoff spot.

In other news, the Delaware Semi Pro League is in discussions to make this League better for the 2016 Season.  The team managers are talking about the possibility of adjusting the number games in the season, the number of games played per week, the option of one weekend game per team and having the entire schedule posted by early March. All of this in an effort to complete the Regular Season and the Playoffs before the college players have to return to their school teams for Fall Ball around August 12th to the 14th. The ideal situation would be to conclude the season prior to the playoffs of the Bridgeton Tournament which in the past has placed an undue hardship on team rosters. The League would also like to institute a Mandatory All-Star game to be played at a premier field like the Wilmington Blue Rocks Stadium. Stay tuned for some exciting times ahead for the Delaware Semi Pro League which may even find a new name next year.

BLUE COATS MOVE ON TO CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

After being down 7-3 in the bottom of the 7th inning the Delaware Blue Coats scored 4 runs to tie it up. Duffie's threatened again in the top of the 8th with 2 men on and their best bat, Troy Ceiber up. Ceiber managed to foul off 2 pitches and worked the count full but Blue Coats Closer, Dan Galati managed to strike him out for the third out.

With the top of their lineup due to bat, the Blue Coats Zach Cooney got a single and managed to steal 2B. Chris Rivera unsuccessfully tried to bunt Cooney over and struck out. Mike Alexander who hit a 2 Run Homer in the 1st inning came to bat next. After getting one strike on Mike, Duffie's decided to intentionally walk him for the second time in the game. With runners on 1st & 2B Alex Zweir came to bat and after working the count full hit a ball to RF scoring the winning run, Zach Cooney.

Shout-out to Blue Coats pitcher Matt Anderson who continued to pitch his heart out after the Blue Coats infield committed 4 errors in the 1st inning allowing Duffie's to score 3 runs  and to Blue Coats Closer, Dan Galati who helped to bring it home. Special shout-out goes to the Blue Coats players who refused to give up.

Congratulations are also in order to Duffie's who despite having to forfeit Game 3 due to a lack of players because of the Bridgeton Tournament, still managed to tie the Series at 2 games each with an awesome performance by Frank Samluk on the mound in Game 4.

Pitcher's Duel Creates 2 Way Tie for Regular Season 1st Place

When Matt Anderson of the Blue Coats and Ryan Mattes of the Buccos took their respective places on the mound at 18th and Van Buren tonight little did they know that they were about to deliver an exciting game of baseball for all the fans and players who attended. When the Buccos came to bat in the top of the first, their goal was to win this game and with it the Regular Season Championship. Blue Coats pitcher, Matt Anderson had something else in mind. He retired the side with 2 groundouts and a strikeout. The Blue Coats came up in the bottom of the 1st inning and Buccos pitcher Ryan Mattes quickly got to two outs with a groundout and a strikeout. The next batter, Mike Alexander hit the first pitch for a line drive to the outfield and a single. He then proceeded to steal 2B with Alex Zweir at bat. With a 1-1 count, Zweir also hit a line drive single which scored Mike Alexander. Although the Blue Coats managed two more hits the rest of the way, Mattes proved too strong by finishing the game with 0 BB and 11 K's. Although the Buccos threatened in the 2nd, 4th and 6th innings Matt Anderson managed to throw a No Hit, Shutout creating a two-way tie for 1st Place and the Season Championship. The Blue Coats managed to take the 4 game season series against the Buccos 3 games to 1 but when these two teams meet you can never predict who will win. They will meet one more time next week to determine the Season Champions and who gets the 1 and 2 Seeds in the Playoffs. Be There!!!!

2014 All Star Game a Great Success - Blue 12 Gold 3

A light passing shower before the game helped to keep the dust down on the all dirt infield at Banning Park. As the first pitch was being thrown by Jake Rifkin of the All Star Blue Team, the sun broke through the clouds and made it a perfect day for baseball. A combined 11 pitchers from the Blue and Gold teams got the opportunity to show why their respective teams picked them to represent their teams for this All Star Game. The Blue team struck immediately in the 1st inning when with a man on base, Rick Hein of the Buccos hit a blast over the RF fence for a Home Run and a 2-0 lead. Then, in the 3rd inning the Blue Team bats really turned it on and scored 7 more runs and now had a 9-0 lead. In the 4th inning the Gold Team managed to put 2 Runs across the plate but only got one more the rest of the way. In the 8th inning All Star Blue put up 3 more Runs and won the day with a score of 12-3. In all 38 players from the 8 Delaware Semi Pro Teams had the opportunity to be declared All Stars for the 2014 season.

After discussions between the 2 managers each All Star Team chose a player to be named an MVP for the Game.

ALL STAR BLUE MVP - RICK HEIN

ALL STAR GOLD MVP - ALEX RILEY

On behalf of all the Managers of the 8 Semi Pro Teams we would like to extend a big Thank You to all the fans who came out to support the players for this great event.

Manager's Meeting Sunday, July 20th @ 8:00pm

A Delaware Semi Pro League meeting will be held on 7/20 at the home of League President, Max Beheler at 8:00pm. Some issues to be discussed will be, a final decision on an All Star Game for this year and what to do about the remaining Tie Games and Rainouts.

Weather Wreaking Havoc

July 15, 2014

As the Delaware Semi Pro regular season is winding down, the weather is making it difficult to get all of our games in. On Monday, July 14th several games got underway but none were able to get the required 5 innings in to make the games official. Today, Tuesday, July 15th the scheduled teams were able to cancel their games before they even got started. Now it falls on the shoulders of League President, Max Beheler to attempt the unenviable task of trying to get these rainouts rescheduled. Most teams have about 8 games remaining to complete their 2014 regular season schedules. Every effort is being made to accomplish this and complete our Playoffs and Championship Series before August 14th when some players will be reporting back to their college teams.

The Damiani Tile Tigers will hold tryouts on April 13th, 20th, & 27th from 4:30-6:30pm at the DelCastle Recreational Complex.
