Mission Valley area players strut their strokes at Pirate Invite

At the Polson Bay Golf Course, the host Pirates placed a pair among the top ten, while the visiting Chiefs of Ronan placed two among the leaderboard.
One could say that the Pirates max-imized their home course advantage as Max Milton captured medalist honors with a par 72 that featured a trio of eagles along with thirteen holes on par. Lady Pirate Kila Cannon tied eighth with a round that included pair of par holes.
The Ronan Chiefs placed two among the leaderboard a half dozen over par as Oliver Rowe strked three eagles along with eight holes pared, while Trey Samsel turned in one eagle while he was on par at ten holes.

Polson golfers crowd leaderboard at Columbia Falls

At the Columbia Falls Invitational held at Meadow Lake Golf Course the last week of August, both Polson teams swept the team titles. The Pirate ladds placed all five of their members among the top ten, paced by a team best 76 from Espn Fisher that included a hole-in-one on the twelfth hole along with a pair of one-under pars. Reece Malyevac of Libby took medalist honors with a four-under par 68. The Ronan Chiefs were paced by a top 15 finish from Colter Cornwell.
The Lady Pirate lassies were paced by Ashley Maki, who mirrored State B champion Keni Wade of Bigfork with a cumulative course tally of 86. Maki was two-under Wade on the front nine, while Wade closed out the back nine by notching two-under Maki. The Ronan Maidens were led by Hanna Lytton, who finished among the high teens, a mere seven strokes from squeezing her way among the top 15.

Mission Valley golfers place eleven among top fifteen at Browning Invite

At Shelby, both Polson Pirate golf squads captured first place with a strong showing at the Browning Invitational held at Marias Valley Golf and Country Club.
Among the Lady Pirate girls, all four placed among the top dozen with Ashley Maki taking silver behind State A champion Katie Lewis of Frenchtown. The Ronan Maiden girls were a player shy of fielding a full fledged team, but were paced by Hanna Lytton, who carded a 109.
The Pirate boys all placed among the top ten with Carson Hupka taking medalist honors with a three over par performance, interspersed by Otto Lund, Torrin Ellis, Hunter Ellison in the odd slots with Espn Fisher taking the tenth spot. The Ronan Chief boys placed a pair among the top 15 with Oliver Rowe twelfth and Colter Cornwell placing fifteenth.

Pirate golf sweep team titles, Hupka medals for Polson

At Cabinet View Golf Course in Libby for the Western A Divisional, both Polson teams swept team honors. Pirate Carson Hupka took medalist honors for the boys after carding a two under par 70, while Lady Pirate Ashley Maki finished runnerup, trailing girls medalist Katie Lewis of Frenchtown by a mere handful of strokes. The Pirates placed four among the top five with their fifth member still making the top ten. Three of the four Lady Pirates placed among the top four, while Kila Cannon tied sixteenth a mere stroke from making the top fifteen. Ronan Maidens Alyssa Pretty On Top and Hanna Lytton both placed among the top tier fifteen, while Chief Colter Cornwell punched his ticket to state for the Ronan boys.
The top four teams and next eight individuals advance to compete in the State A Tournament held in Hamilton next weekend. The top fifteen finishers are conferred with all-conference recognition.

Laurel's Carson Hackmann, Hannah Adams win tight competition at Eastern A Divisional golf
BILLINGS — Laurel’s Carson Hackmann and Billings Central’s Nick Pasquarello battled atop the boys leaderboard, with Hackmann winning medalist honors with a one-round 73 Thursday at the Eastern A divisional golf tournament at Lake Hills Golf Course.
Pasquarello came in second, one shot back with a two-over 74.
Laurel sisters Hannah Adams and Haylee Adams were also separated by one stroke in the girls competition. Hannah Adams won the individual crown after shooting a first-round 79. Haylee Adams came in second with an 80
The top five individuals on the boys side was rounded out by Central’s Malachi Stewart (79), Lewistown’s Jake Henderson (80) and Miles City’s Ryder Lee (81). Karsyn Swigart of Miles City and Breana Jensen of Laurel tied for third in the girls tourney, each with a one-round 85. Alivia Webinger of Laurel also placed in the top five with a 90.
The top four teams, consisting of five golfers each, earned automatic berths to the state tournament, which will be held Oct. 1-2 at the Butte Country Club.
Billings Central’s boys and Laurel’s girls took home championships. The Rams, who shot a combined 319, prevailed by five strokes over second-place Laurel in the boys standings, while Laurel won comfortably in the girls standings with a one-round total of 334, 61 shots ahead of second-place Sidney.
Havre (359) and Livingston (360) also placed in the top four of the boys standings. Livingston (408) and Havre (463) joined the top-four of the girls tournament.
In addition to the top four boys and girls teams advancing to the state tournament, the top 30 individuals with the lowest scores qualified.
Whitefish's Cam Kahle, Corvallis' Macee Greenwood take home Western A divisional golf titles
POLSON — On Saturday, another step toward the state golf tournaments was taken as the Western A divisional tournament teed off at Polson Bay Golf Course.
Ninety-five total golfers came to Polson for the last tournament before the state tournaments tee off next week
With COVID-19 restrictions, golf tournaments have largely been limited to one-day events.
On the individual side of things, it was Whitefish's Cameron Kahle who came away with the best score of the day for the boys, and Corvallis' Macee Greenwood had the low score of the day on the girls scorecard.
Kahle, a senior, shot an even-par 72 to win, followed closely by his teammate Billy Smith, who shot a 74.
"I couldn't get anything to fall coming down the stretch, but I made some good saves and was able to scratch out an even-par," said Kahle. "I came into this week with pretty low expectations. I had a back injury situation, got that figured out and hit a draw all day and was able to feel it around the golf course. Happy with how I played (Saturday)."
Heading into the week of state, Kahle obviously is eyeing the title, but he also had an overall goal for his senior season to shoot a combined 10-under par in tournaments and is close heading into state.
Regardless of his individual performance, Kahle is more than confident in his team.
In the boys team rankings, Whitefish also came away with the combined low score of the day with a 308. Whitefish golfers Marcus Kilman and Johnny Nix shot 80 and 82, respectively.
"Coming into this year I knew we were going to be the best," said Kahle. "I mean, we're the best team out here, there's no question about it. If we go out next Thursday and Friday and do what we're supposed to do, then there's not a chance in hell anyone can beat us."
Hamilton came in second with a combined score of 332. Polson came in third with a score of 351.
On the girls side, Greenwood ruled the day with her 2-over 74
"I think I played pretty steady," said Greenwood. "I was in the fairway, hit a lot of greens, then didn't make any putts but didn't three-putt, which always helps."
Heading into state Greenwood said she just needs to put together a consistent tournament.
"Getting mentally focused and just hitting a bucket of balls a day," said Greenwood. "I just want to put two good rounds together and see what happens."
In the team standings, Corvallis came in third with a combined score of 400. Polson came in second, shooting a 397, and Whitefish swept with their girls winning with a score of 379.

LAUREL — Whitefish’s Cameron Kahle won a three-hole playoff by shooting par on the third hole at the State A Golf Tournament at Laurel Golf Club in Laurel on Friday.
Kahle defeated Laurel’s Carson Hackmann, who was tied for third place with Kahle after Day 1 of the tournament. Both shot low rounds of 77 on Day 2, along with Laurel’s Nick Pasquarello.
A 12-foot birdie on No. 17 and an eagle on 18 by Kahle forced extra holes.
In sudden death, Kahle and Hackmann opened with pars on No. 10. On 18, Kahle could have won with a 15-foot birdie but missed. Play shifted back to No. 10 where Hackmann knocked a drive into the creek and double-bogeyed on a par-5. Kahle’s par sealed his victory.
Polson’s Trey Kelley tied for ninth place.
Andrew Brozek and Johnny Nix of Whitefish were 13th and 17th respectively.
Hannah Adams of Laurel took the girls’ state title with sister Haylee at second.
Macee Greenwood of Corvallis, who led after Day 1, finished one stroke behind Haylee Adams, in third place.
Polson’s Ellie Thiel tied for eighth.
Whitefish’s Megan Archibald, the school’s highest finisher, tied for 11th place. Ella Shaw was 17th.
Laurel swept the boys and girls team titles. The boys edged out Butte Central, who led after the first day.
The Whitefish girls finished in second place and the boys fourth. Polson girls were sixth.
2019 'A' DIVISIONAL RESULTS

WESTERN 'A'
The Hamilton boys and Whitefish girls won the team titles Thursday at the Western A Divisional golf tournament at King Ranch Golf Course in Frenchtown. The Hamilton boys finished with a team score of 324, 11 strokes better than second place Whitefish. Frenchtown was third at 339. Cameron Kahle of Whitefish took boys medalist honors with a round of 72. Tristan Hanson of Hamilton, teammate Bryce Reed and Frenchtown's Colby Emmons were next in line at 79. The Whitefish girls tallied 379 to edge out Corvallis with 391. Frenchtown was third at 413. Ella Shaw of Whitefish and Macee Greenwood of Corvallis topped the girls standings with rounds of 85. Jill Sure Chief of Browning was next at 89. The top four teams and top 30 individuals qualify for the state tournament, which will be held next week at Laurel Golf Club.

Laurel programs sweep at State A golf, Tricia Joyce wins first title, Ryggs Johnston wins again

HAMILTON — When Libby's Ryggs Johnston walked off the ninth green Saturday at the Hamilton Golf Club, the senior knew he had won the State A boys title.
But Johnston ended his illustrious prep career — likely the best-ever in Montana high school golf history — with a bogey.
"I don't know if there's ever too much smiling after a bogey," Johnston said.
What can you say? The kid is the ultimate competitor. The last two days at the state tournament — and the last four years — are proof.
The Libby senior carded a 67-70—137 to claim his fourth straight state title across two different classifications. He joins Columbus' Brandon Davison (1995-98) as the only other four-time boys champion, according to the Montana High School Association, and Johnston did it all in dominant fashion.
His 7-under par 137 ties the second-best Class A mark at state, per the MHSA, and it trails only his own Class A record he set last season in Sidney (134). Johnston also owns the Class B and all-class record at 128. He hasn't lost a prep tournament in Montana since the regular season of his freshman year.
"...I'm kind of relieved it's over," Johnston said. "It's been a goal for me since freshman year and I achieved it, so I'm happy."
"Winning a state championship is not easy."
For the last four seasons, however, Johnston surely made it look that way.

Butte Central's Tricia Joyce is someone who knows just how difficult it is to win a state title.
For three seasons, Joyce placed in the Top 4 at state, including a second-place finish her freshman season.
On Saturday, she finally got her turn atop the podium.
"I don't know if it's really hit me yet, but I'm just glad I didn't lose," Joyce said succinctly.
Joyce shot a 75-77—152 to fight off feisty Corvallis freshman Macee Greenwood by five strokes. The back-and-forth play between the underclassman and upperclassman played out for 36 holes, as it had all season.
"We were battling back and forth. I'd blow up on a hole and she'd make birdie, and then we'd do the opposite," Greenwood said. "It definitely kept me focused the whole round."
In the blustery weather at the Hamilton Golf Club Saturday, Joyce said she just stayed within herself, and ultimately the experience won out.
She finished with a 2-foot par putt on Hole 18, managing her nerves just enough to make winning state seem simply routine.
"I just didn't want to miss it — I didn't want to 3-putt my last hole — I just had to make that last putt," Joyce said.
"It feels pretty awesome. This is the way I wanted to end it."

For Laurel coach Jim O'Neil, the Locomotives state titles mean just a little more this season.
The Class A trophy for the Laurel girls is a symbol to the dedication that they put in place before the season.
"We met in the winter and I told them I believed that if they collectively put their efforts together that we could win a state championship," O'Neil said. "They worked incredibly hard and achieved that goal."
For the boys, celebrating their second straight team title, it's a fitting farewell to O'Neil's son in his senior season.
"Detaching myself as dad is difficult in a situation like this, but this I know — I'm incredibly proud of all of these guys," O'Neil said. "What they did was pretty dang impressive."
No doubt.
The Top 4 Laurel boys, Carson Hackmann, Nick Pasquarello, Cash Golden and Jim's son, Paul O'Neil, all finished with all-state rounds a day after shooting just 1-over par collectively on Friday. Carson Hackmann, O'Neil's nephew, led the bunch with a 145, finished in a four-way second-place tie overall.
Pasquarello, placed sixth with a 71-79—150, Golden finished a stroke behind that and Paul placed ninth with a 152.
"Paul had our lowest score average for this season, and he didn't get it done today, but he is the glue that held this thing together," coach O'Neil said of his son. "...(As a dad), I'm a little disappointed for him, but my pride in Paul is indescribable."
Saturday's 308 as a team kept the Locomotive boys from capturing the Class A record round, but the 289-308—597 is still the fourth-best team-finish ever, according to the MHSA. It trails two other Laurel programs (589, 1999; 593, 1998), and Whitefish (595, 2006).
To illustrate just how tough the Laurel boys were, even the Locomotives fifth golfer, Kade Ewalt, posted an all-state round with a 12-place 80-79—159. Because it was the lowest score for Laurel, though, it didn't count to the final team total.
The Laurel girls won in similarly dominant fashion turning in another true team performance.
"Our girls shot their lowest round of the year today, so to play their best round at the most important time of the year says something about this group," O'Neil said of the Locomotive girls, celebrating their first state championship since 1971.
Sisters Hannah and Haylee Adams finished tied for fourth place, each shooting a 176 over two days. Elise Shovar placed ninth with a 184, and Keli Hodges finished just outside the top 15 with a 190.
"It was a collective effort where they just cared about each other and they would not let the other one down," O'Neil said. "They were a band of sisters."

Similar story lines abounded on the final day of the Class A state tournament in Hamilton. For Corvallis' Keelee Storrud, the senior shot one of her best rounds — a 90, that was oh-so close to her goal of an 89.
Still, Storrud's eighth-place finish, along with Greenwood's second-place 78-79—157 helped power the Blue Devils to a third-place trophy — the first piece of hardware for the third-year program.
"I'm just really proud, just touched. To come this far in a short period of time shows you what kind of kids they are," said a teary-eyed coach Kristy Schlimgen alongside her son, Luke, who also garnered all-state honors with a 12th-place finish on the boys' side.
The Stevensville boys also brought home their first-ever state trophy, eking out third place by one stroke over Frenchtown, 659-660. It's been a longtime coming for coach Jack Filcher, who couldn't hide his smile when he found out his boys had done it.
Zel Frost led the Yellowjackets with an 11th place 78-80—158, one season after missing the cut by one spot.
"It feels good to say we accomplished that and brought home a trophy," Frost said.
Ivan Yazvac also claimed all-state honors, placing 15th alongside Ryan Adolph of Billings Central.
Not to be outdone, the hosting Hamilton boys finished second overall with a two-day score of 309-316—625. That score would have been good enough to win the last six Class A state tournaments.
"I'm very proud of the boys. We've got some boys that are kind of frustrated with the way they golfed the last two days, but I'm so proud of them," Hamilton coach Owen Burch said. "Second place, and the score we shot; I mean, we shot a 309 yesterday and were 20 shots out of first place. That's never happened to me in 34 years of coaching."
With the silver, though, three Bitterroot schools brought home state hardware, a fact the friendly rivals celebrated after the tournament. The Stevi and Hamilton boys and Corvallis girls, all stood alongside each other for a photo op.
Individually, the Broncs' Tristan Hanson tied Ryggs Johnston's second-day low score of 70 to move into a 4-way second-place tie in the individual race, making for a hysterical sight on the podium. Hanson had to shimmy alongside Polson's Matt Hobbs, Whitefish's Cameron Kahle and Laurel's Hackmann on the podium's second-step. All four shot a two-day score of 145.
Hamilton's Zach Taylor placed seventh with a 151.
The Whitefish girls finished second overall, and Ella Shaw placed third with a 88-85—173. Her teammate, Megan Archibad, placed seventh wiith a 179.
Custer County's Ashtyn Swigart, Billings Central's Perry Widdicombe, Polson's Cali Cannon, Sidney's Karly Volk, Dillon's Lindsey Huber, Hamilton's Aly Rose and Libby's Sammee Bradeen also earned all-state recognition.
For the boys, Frenchtown's Mason Pyron and Derek Wolff also finished in the top 15

'A' GOLF DIVISIONAL RESULTS
September 22, 2018
• Teagan Fee of Havre and Caleb Myers of Lewistown won the individual divisional titles at the Central A Divisional tournament. Lewistown won both the boys and girls team titles. The Golden Eagles boys won in a playoff over Belgrade, and the girls won by 32. Fee shot a 91 and was 10 strokes ahead of teammate Allison Denton. Myers won with 81 and Brock Blake of Belgrade was second at 85.
• Laurel's Paul O'Neil and Haylee Adams were the medalists at the Eastern A Divisional at Laurel Golf Club. O'Neil won with a 69, and Adams topped the girls leader board with a 90. The top 15 finishers for the boys and girls qualified for state. Laurel and Billings Central garnered team berths to state on the boys side. Laurel and Miles City ran away with the girls invites to state. The State A tournament will be held next Friday and Saturday in Hamilton.
CENTRAL 'A'
Eighteen holes wasn’t enough to decide the Central A Divisional champion Friday in Havre. It took one more at Prairie Farms Golf Course.
Belgrade and Fergus County’s boys each cared a 372 at day’s end, and a one-hole playoff was held to determine the champion. Fergus won it by a stroke to claim the divisional crown.
It was a nerve-racking finish for Belgrade, although players from both teams had already clinched their berth to next week’s state Class A tournament in Hamilton.
“I felt like we all were a little bit nervous. There was a lot of people watching,” sophomore Brock Blake, who led the Panthers with an 85 to place second, said. “We all could have played a little bit better, but not too big of a deal. We all played pretty good.”
Belgrade boasted three golfers in the top 10 with Braxton Butler and Anthony Madison placing third and seventh, respectively, with scores of 86 and 94.
Jaxson Hinshaw and Nic Board rounded out the Panthers, carding a 107 and 119, respectively.
“It would have been nice to get the trophy,” longtime Belgrade coach Joe Rossman said, “but it’s awful nice that all five get to get to go to state.”
The top two teams, boys and girls, qualified for state as well as the top 15 individuals. But it didn't lessen the sting for the boys of placing second.
“There’s always one hole for everybody that we could have taken a stroke off and at least didn’t have that tie,” said Blake. “But it happens. That’s just how golf works. There’s always just one stroke.”
On the girls side, Erin Elgas had rounds of 52 and 49 to place third with a 101. The senior is advancing to state for a second consecutive season and will be joined by Lanie Morgan and Sophia Flikkema.
“We had three girls qualify,” said Rossman. “For two girls never to have any golfing varsity experience to make state is a great thing. They really worked their butt off this year to get to that point. It’s just great that they made it.”
Morgan, a first-time golfer as a senior, finished with a 112 to place sixth, while Flikkema was 13th with a 143.
“I was kind of surprised,” Morgan admitted of qualifying for state. “I’m excited. I’m really proud of them (my teammates).”
Senior Lily Antos also competed, but did not qualify for state after carding a 152. But Rossman was thrilled that eight of his nine golfers advanced considering only three had prior divisional experience.
“How we ended up is a testament to how hard they worked during the season and the off-season,” he said.
The two-day state tournament will be held Sept. 28-29 at the Hamilton Golf Course. Belgrade’s boys placed ninth a year ago.
“Expectations for state,” Blake said while contemplating the question, “try and beat our divisional scores, for sure. Put up a good team score and just have fun and don’t get down on ourselves.”
Hamilton won the team title at 322. Stevensville took second at 330, followed by Polson at 340 and Frenchtown at 350.
The top four teams and top 30 individuals advance to the state tournament.
Two Butte Central boys will be making the trip.
Juniors Gator Yelenich and Cole Johnson tied for 28th to make the cutoff. Players shooting 94 or higher are done for the season.
Also for BC, freshman Austin Harrington and junior Ryan Wahl each shot a 96, while freshman Gunner Yelenich hit 97.
The cutoff for girls qualifying for state was 116.

Congratulations to the Logger golfers at the State Tournament. The boys team was led by Ryggs Johnston, our three-time State Champion (twice in Class B and once now in Class A) with a 68, 66 134. Sebo Sanders shot 91,114 205 and Andrew Freese was 114,115 229. We needed four boys for a team score. Our girls team finished seventh overall. Sammee Bradeen was 102,104 206; Khalyn Hageness was 113,110 223; Allie Snyder shot 120,120 240; Sydney Croucher was 121,123 244; and Emily Carvey shot 160,145 305.
The Sidney girls are state champions with a 51-stroke victory over Lewistown.
Tierney Messmer was the top golfer for the girls with a tournament score of 157.
Kaelyn Volk took second with a score of 158. Torey Dahl made all-state with a score of 200.
Chase Morehouse made all-state for the boys with an overall score of 164.

LIBBY’S JOHNSTON, WHITEFISH GIRLS TAKE DIVISIONAL GOLF TITLES
HAMILTON — Libby junior Ryggs Johnston and the Whitefish girls captured titles on Saturday at the Western A Divisional golf tournament at the Hamilton Golf Club.
Johnston shot a 63 for medalist honors and an 11-shot victory.
Carson McDaniel of Polson, 76, was third.
The Whitefish girls took the team title thanks to Gracie Young placing second with an 89 and Ella Shaw tied for third with a 92.
Tricia Joyce of Butte Central was the medalist with a 77.
The Polson boys and girls finished second.
The top two teams along with the top 15 individuals with the lowest scores qualify for state play, which begins Thursday in Sidney.

• Libby's Ryggs Johnston took care of business at the Western A divisional, firing a 9-under 63 at the Par 72 Hamilton Golf Club to win the boys title. The two-time defending Class B champion and all-class state record holder for lowest state-tournament round won the divisional by 11 strokes. The Hamilton boys, Class A's defending champions, won the divisional on their home course. Tristan Hansonwas the highest placer for the Broncs. He finished in a three-way tie for third place with Polson's Carson McDaniel and Frenchtown's Derek Wolff. Whitefish won the girls title with a team score of 406, and Gracie Young had the lowest score for the Bulldogs at 89. She was 12 strokes off the pace of Butte Central'sTricia Joyce, who won the individual title. Frenchtown's Courtney Ockler tied for third with Whitefish's Ella Shaw.
Tierney Messmer, Liam Clancy win Eastern A golf titles
HARDIN – Sidney’s Tierney Messmer and Billings Central’s Liam Clancy added to their fall accolades on Saturday afternoon, winning the Eastern A golf invitational medalist honors at Fort Custer Golf Course.
Messmer, who has won numerous invites this fall, shot 39-36 for a round of 75. She defeated teammate Kaelyn Volk by four strokes for the divisional crown. Volk’s 79, along with Torrey Dahl’s fifth-place finish, helped Sidney to the girls team title.
Clancy has also enjoyed a fine fall schedule, earning the top mark at a handful of events. The Billings Central standout has consistently been in the top five at invites across eastern Montana. His 71 Saturday was good for a two-stroke victory over Sidney’s Chase Morehouse and Laurel’s Paul O’Neil.
Laurel teammates O’Neil, Cash Golden, Carson Hackman and Ryan Kallem paced the Locomotives to the team title. O’Neil tied for second place, Golden finished fourth, while Kallem and Hackman tied for fifth.

Joyce second, Yelenich fourth at State A golf
HAMILTON — Tricia Joyce is within striking distance of a state championship.
The Butte Central sophomore shot an 83 Friday at the Hamilton Golf Club and is a second-place tie with Glendive’s Breilyn Riggin at the Class A State tournament. Joyce and Riggin are one shot behind Sidney’s Kaelyn Volk heading into Saturday’s final round. Results

On the boys’ side, Butte Central junior Tyge Yelenich shot a 79 and is in a four-way tie for fourth place at the halfway point.
Max Toenjes of Hamilton shot a 3-under-par 69 on his home course to take the lead. Liam Clancy of Billings Central sits in second at 73, while Paul O’Neil of Laurel is third at 78.
Hamilton has a comfortable lead in team standings. The Broncs hit 312, and Polson is a distant second at 329. Defending champion Billings Central is tied with Laurel for third at 333.
Butte Central is holding down sixth place at 352.
Also for the Maroons, Cameron Johnson is tied for 25th place at 85. He is four shots out of the top 15, which designates All-State honors.
Gator Yelenich shot a 91, Bryan Arnold hit 97, and Dan McCloskey carded a 111.
The Sidney girls shot 369 and hold a 17-shot lead over second-place Whitefish, the defending champion.
Hamilton boys, Sidney girls grab leads at State A golf tournament
HAMILTON – The hometown boys, and a group of girls making a very long trip took leads after the first round of the State A golf tournament in Hamilton. The hosting Broncs hold team and individual leads with 18 holes to go. So do the ladies from Sidney.
The final round tees off Saturday at 10 a.m.
Hamilton’s Max Toenjes came in as one of the favorites on his home course. And he didn’t disappoint. A fast start helped Toenjes finish with a three-under par 69. He holds a four-shot lead over defending State A champion Liam Clancy of Billings Central. Last year, Clancy won the state tournament in Sidney, beating the second-place Toenjes by five shots. Third place Paul O’Neil of Laurel sits 9 shots back.
The Hamilton boys team also finished second to Billings Central last year. But the Broncs have set themselves up for a title, with a 17-shot advantage over Polson. Billings Central and Laurel are tied for third.
Not much separates the top girls at the halfway point. Sidney’s Kaelyn Volk, an 8th place finisher at state last year, holds a slim one-shot lead after a first round 82. Butte Central’s Tricia Joyce and Breilyn Riggin of Glendive are tied for second. Joyce finished as the state runner-up a year ago. The top five ladies are all within three shots of the lead. Lewistown’s Kinsey Irvin trails by two. Frenchtown’s Courtney Ockler and Sidney’s Tierney Messmer trail by three.
Volk and Messmer have helped the Sidney girls build a 17-shot lead on the team leaderboard. Whitefish and Lewistown round out the top three. Whitefish topped Sidney for the team title last year.

EASTERN 'A' CONF DIVISIONAL RESULTS
Sidney girls, Miles City boys win Eastern A golf titles
SIDNEY — Sidney's girls continued their strong play this season by shooting a 379 and winning the Eastern A golf divisional by 35 strokes at Sidney Country Club.
The Eagles will be joined at next week's state tournament by Billings Central, which placed second.
The Miles City and Billings Central boys finished 1-2 to qualify for state. The Cowboys shot 326, two strokes ahead of the Rams and Laurel. Billings Central won a tiebreaker over Laurel for second place; the Locomotives, though, still qualified all five of their golfers and can compete for the team title.
The top two teams and the top 15 individuals qualified for state.
Glendive's Breilyn Riggin was the girls medalist. She shot 82, three strokes ahead of Sidney's Kaelyn Volk.
Paul O'Neil shot 73 to win the boys title. He was three strokes better than Miles City's Deven Doughty.
The tournament was originally scheduled for Friday, but was moved up to Wednesday due to concerns about the weather.
The Class A state tournament is Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Hamilton.

Whitefish girls repeat, Billings Central takes boys title
SIDNEY -- Saturday was nearly a banner day for western Montana golf teams at the Class A State golf tournament, but as anybody who's ever watched a putt lip out knows nearly isn't good enough in golf.
Hamilton made up six strokes on Billings Central, but it wasn't enough. As the Broncs fell just short of repeating as the boys' team champion, the Whitefish girls padded their Day 1 lead and won their second state title in as many seasons.
Whitefish, which led by 24 strokes after Day 1, won its state record 18th state title by a 39-stroke margin over host Sidney.
Coral Schulz repeated as Class A champion, leading a host of Bulldogs who walked off the course with all-state honors. Katie Fyall improved her 2014 finish one by stroke, taking third and Hayley and Holly Hileman fishished tied for 14th.
Billings Central's Liam Clancy won boys' gold by five strokes over Hamilton's Max Toenjes.
Schulz led by six heading into the final round. She shot an 80 on Saturday and one stroke was trimmed off the lead by Butte Central's Tricia Joyce, who finished with a 79 -- the day's only sub-80 round.
Frenchtown was 54 strokes behind Sidney in third, the exact spot the Broncs finished last season. Dani Flynn, who rounded out the top 10 with a two-day total of 185, was the Broncs' lowest scorer.
Hamilton's Sydni Rose was sixth with a 180.
On the boys' side, four of Hamilton's five golfers shaved strokes off their Day 1 totals, including a 10-stroke difference for Connor Hawks, who finished far back in the pack.
Billings Central had three of its golfers card scores higher than they turned in on Friday, including two with a difference of 12 of more. The difference, however, wasn't enough.
Clancy fired a 74, one stroke better than the 75 that gave him a two-stroke advantage heading into the second day. Toenjes answered with a 76, vaulting him up two spots from his 2014 finish.
Two other Broncs finished with all-state honors; Josh Heath finished fifth and Blaine Wetzsteon closed his round in a four-way tie for 11th. Also in the pack were Whitefish's Cole Turgeon and Joey Walp.
Whitefish was third with a two-day total of 679.
Polson's Carson McDaniel was 15th, rounding out the all-state team.

SIDNEY — Tricia Joyce lived up to the billing.
The Butte Central freshman golfer placed second at the Class A State golf tournament, which concluded Saturday at the Sidney Country Club.
Joyce had the low round of the day Saturday, firing a 79 one day after an 82. Her 161 total was five shots behind Whitefish’s Coral Schulz, who followed a 76 with an 80 to defend her individual title.
Katie Fyall of Whitefish placed a distant third at 170.
Whitefish also defended its team title, winning with a 720 total. Sidney was a very distant second place at 759.
Billings Central won the boys title with a 659, beating second-place Hamilton by 12 shots.
Liam Clancy of Billings Central won the individual title after following a 75 with a 74 for a 149 total. Max Toenes of Hamilton took second at 154, followed by Tyrell Walter of Lewistown at 160.
Sophomore Tyge Yelenich led the Butte Central boys, who didn’t have enough golfers for a team score.
Yelenich followed an 86 with an 85 for a 171. He missed All-State recognition by four shots. The top 15 individuals take home that honor.
Senior Bryan Arnold shot a 103 for a 197, while classmate Tyler Kump hit a 101 for a 207.

SIDNEY — What a difference a year makes.
The Billings Central Rams took advantage of a huge first-round lead to overcome a shaky start Saturday and earn the sixth boys’ golf championship in school history and first since 2003.
They were led by medalist Liam Clancy, who shot a 74 on Saturday to follow a first-round 75 and win by five strokes.
“We felt like we were in a pretty good position heading into (the final round),” said Central coach Mark Hutchinson. “However, we were in this position a year ago and I know they were having some butterflies and thoughts about not losing this lead even though it was so large.”
Last October, the Rams took a three-stroke lead into the final round only to see Hamilton out-shoot them by 13 on the second day and earn the state title.
“I knew we’d really have to play poorly not to win it after the way we played (Friday),” Hutchinson said. “With the conditions the way they were, the kids knew it would be a grind.
The Rams finished with a team score of 650, 12 strokes ahead of runner-up Hamilton. Whitefish was third with a team score of 679.
Clancy won by five strokes over Hamilton's Max Toenjes.
"Liam played outstanding all weekend," Hutchinson said. "I couldn't be happier for him. He deserved winning the individual championship and it's something he'll never forget."
Clancy certainly won't forget the shot he hit on the 17th hole Saturday.
After seeing his lead dwindle to two strokes, he eyed the flag 180 yards away.
"I just wanted to put a good stroke on it," Clancy said.
And that he did.
"It was the most flush 4-iron I've hit in my life," he said. "It's a really good feeling when you have a two-foot putt for birdie."
Clancy tapped it in to all but clinch the state title. His lead went back to four strokes after a bogey by Toenjes.
"That shot was just a snippet of what he did all weekend," Hutchinson said. "He wasn't going to be beat."
On the girls side, Whitefish's Coral Schulz shot a 156 to cruise to the individual title and the Bulldogs scored a 39-stroke victory to earn the team crown ahead of Sidney (759) and Frenchtown (813).
Laurel's Morgan O'Neil finished fourth with a two-day total of 171. The Locomotives finished fourth with a team score of 830.
