CFALLS WINS 2025 SPEECH DIVISIONAL
This weekend the Columbia Falls Speech and debate team competed in the Western A Divisional Tournament at Polson. The top 12 of each of the events qualify to participate with the top 12 in each event from the Eastern A Division at State next weekend. Columbia Falls and Whitefish have battled with close finishes all season and the divisional tournament was no different. The Wildcats pulled ahead in the finals round. to win the Divisional trophy. Frenchtown placed 3rd overall with 66 sweeps points, Whitefish placed 2nd with 220 and Columbia Falls won the title with 236 sweeps points. The Class A Western Divisional speech and debate tournament in Polson was another tight race to the finish between Columbia Falls and Whitefish. Ultimately, Columbia Falls High School slid past Whitefish High School for the win, earning 236 overall points to Whitefish’s 220 points.

“Columbia Falls and Whitefish have battled with close finishes all season and the divisional tournament was no different. The Wildcats pulled ahead in the finals round to win the Divisional trophy,” Columbia Falls head coach Dawn Roe said.

Frenchtown finished in third place with 66 points.

Leading Columbia Falls to a first-place finish were five individual champions: Quinn Caudle and Kaya Carlburg in Public Forum Debate, Melody McNally in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Carson Settles and Reid Wollenzien in Duo Interpretation, and Settles in Program Oral Interpretation.

Divisional runner-up, Whitefish, was also led by five individual champions: Jake Dunker and Bjorn Bungener in Policy Debate, Scarlet Burke in Informative Speaking, Unity Loveless in Memorized Public Address and Mason Loeffler in Extemporaneous Speaking.

“I am so proud of the powerhouse, collective force this team has become,” Mueller said.

The divisional tournament determines who qualifies to compete at the Class A state championship on Friday and Saturday in Laurel. Students who placed in the top 12 in each individual event advance to state.

“Looking at the qualifying numbers from both the Whitefish and Columbia Falls teams, we will definitely take this season's battle to the state tournament,” Roe said. “We both have strong teams, however we have not yet seen much of the competition from the East side [of Montana]. We expect that this will be a close competition and look forward to a riveting finale to our season.”

Mueller anticipates the same at state.

“We head into the state tournament a bit down in numbers, but certainly not out, against a very talented and well-coached perennial favorite Columbia Falls team. This has been a season of back-and-forth results and close finishes. I expect no different in Laurel this upcoming Friday and Saturday,” Mueller said.

CFALLS WINS WFISH MEET
The Columbia Falls speech and debate team edged Whitefish last week to round out the regular season by just three points in an impromptu meet hosted by the Bulldogs.

“Whitefish agreed to host the tournament after last minute changes left the Western A division schools without a tournament for the weekend. The competition was fierce, and the results were the closest yet this season with just three sweeps points separating first-place Columbia Falls and second-place Whitefish,” coach Dawn Roe said. “Thank you to Whitefish head coach Sara Mueller and her team for putting together the tournament with such short notice.”

The Divisional tournament is in Polson next Saturday.

Teams can have three entries per event as they compete for a spot on the State team. Top 12 in each event for the Western Division will continue on to State in Laurel Jan. 31-Feb. 1.

The Wildcats are hoping to secure their 25th state A title in school history. It’s the winningest program at the school by a large margin.

Columbia Falls High School wins Hamilton speech and debate tournament

Columbia Falls High School speech and debate secured a tournament win in Hamilton over the weekend, followed by Whitefish in second place.

Columbia Falls amassed 218 points overall for the win. Whitefish earned 165 points.

“A number of our newer competitors have hit their stride with some of them finishing for the first time in the top eight of their events,” Columbia Falls head coach Dawn Roe said. “We are now more than halfway through our season with just a few tournaments remaining before Divisionals at Polson in January.”

Teams will next compete in the Kalispell Western Regional tournament on Friday and Saturday in Kalispell.

CFALLS WINS OWN MEET

Columbia Falls won its home speech and debate tournament Saturday amongst Class A schools, downing Whitefish and Frenchtown, who took second and third respectively.

Coach Dawn Roe thanked the community for its support, as the high school wasn’t completely available due to renovations.

“The school community graciously allowed us to change the location of our tournament so that we could move forward with the tournament as planned. Thank you to the Wildcat community for the use of your buildings and classrooms. Thank you to the Columbia Falls community for the clothing donations to replace our giving closet, and for the donation of your time to judge,” Roe said.

The Wildcats closed out a perfect season with the Class A State Championship earning 285 points in sweeps. Whitefish placed 2nd with 148 sweeps and Laurel placed 3rd with 88 points.

CFHS Speech and Debate Wins Western A Divisionals:

Saturday, January 20, the Wildcats Speech and debate team competed in the Western Divisional Tournament for Class A in Stevensville with a team of 34. The last few weeks were tough for the kids with school and practices canceled for weather, while also juggling their final exams. These amazing kids did not let that get in their way! Out of 11 events for speech and debate, Columbia Falls placed Divisional Champs in 7 of the events. The Wildcats qualified competitors into all events for the State Tournament next week with 29 entries. Whether the competitors qualified or ended their season on Saturday, the entire Divisional team contributed to Columbia Falls winning the Class A Western Division with 236 sweeps points. Whitefish was 2nd with 136 sweeps points and Stevensville was 3rd with 55 points.

8 IS GREAT!! — The Wildcats Speech and Debate team brought home their 8th tournament win this weekend at the Yeti Tournament at Glacier High School. The tournament was attended by Class A and AA schools from Missoula, the Flathead Valley, and from Washington State and provided the opportunity for competitors to crossover and compete in both speech and debate events or to maximize the number of events in a round. It was a fantastic conclusion to our undefeated regular season competition. We have a week off before we travel to Stevensville for the Western Divisional Tournament on January 20th.

SPEECH AND DEBATE KEEPS RACKING UP THE FIRST PLACE FINISHES (7th THIS YEAR, SO FAR!) -- The Columbia Falls Speech and Debate team stayed in the valley this weekend to compete in Whitefish at the Stumptown Classic. The Wildcats and the Whitefish Bulldogs fought hard for first with Columbia squeaking out a win at the end making it their 7th win of the season. Speech and debate making its mark early

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team looks to nab another state A title this season and already they’ve been showing their mettle at early meets.

They opened the season Oct. 28 with a win in Corvallis with 184 overall points. East Helena placed second with 66 overall points followed by Whitefish, with 64 points.

The season started a week earlier than normal, coach Dawn Roe said, because Corvallis wanted to host a tourney early, as teams from the south don’t travel as much once winter weather sets in.

The Wildcats won the state A meet last year, the program’s 23rd overall and first for coach Roe. They have eight seniors on the squad, but lost a few state champions from last season. They also have some returning, including senior Lucas Counts and junior Carson Settles. Settles was a state champ in informative last season and Counts paired up with Zack Tillman for a title in duo interpretation.

Counts has a new partner this year and Settles won in Corvallis and has paired up with Reed Wollenzein in duo interpretation as well. They already notched a win in Corvallis.

The squad also features senior Ruby Davis, who placed in a couple of events at state last year

All told they have a team of 43 which includes 25 returning from last year’s state championship team.

Roe said the team grew across all grade levels and this year — with 10 freshmen, 16 sophomores, eight juniors, and nine seniors.

Enthusiasm is high.

“They were coming in the first day of school wanting to practice,” Roe said.

Younger members are also stepping up — Eleanor Smiley looks good in Impromptu; Kory Moran in Humorous Interpretation and Quinn Caudle and Chris Daenzer in public forum debate to name a few. They all took titles in Corvallis.

The team will also travel to Bozeman Nov. 10-11 and compete with some eastern Montana schools.

This is Roe’s third season as head coach. She is assisted by Mikel Knutson, Ian Wheeler, Alix Major and Kavin Wickham.

Columbia Falls is hosting the State tournament Jan. 26-27 and is already signing up judges for the largest tournament of the year.

SPEECH AND DEBATE ROCKS THE FLATHEAD — Columbia Falls Speech and Debate participated in the Kalispell Kickoff Tournament at Glacier High School on Saturday, November 4th. There were 18 schools entered, which included 5 Class AA Varsity, 3 Class AA JV, and 10 Class A/B/C schools for a total of 404 individual competitors. Columbia Falls placed 1st in their class with 119 sweeps points with Loyola coming in second in a tiebreaker against Frenchtown, both with 32 points. 2023 CLASS A STATE SPEECH AND DEBATE CHAMPIONS -- The Wildcats Speech and Debate team finished the 22/23 season undefeated with their 23rd State Title. Columbia Falls placed 1st with 209 sweeps points, Whitefish placed 2nd with 125 sweeps points, and Laurel placed 3rd with 106 sweeps points.

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team took second among class A Schools to Frenchtown at the Glacier Yeti Class AA tournament in Kalispell.

“This season we have had a number of close tournament results with the first and second place positions usually coming down to just a few points in the final sweeps,” coach Dawn Roe noted.

The Wildcats were led by Eddie Chisholm and Emma Stephens, who took second in policy debate.

Too Close to Call

Top Three Class A Teams Continue to battle heading into state tournament.

Polson, MT – January 23, 2021 –

The Montana Western A Divisional Tournament came down to the final ballots before a winner could be determined this past weekend. After the final ballots were submitted and the results tallied the score had Whitefish in first with 156 points. Just two points ahead of Columbia Fall’s 154 points. Frenchtown took third with 137 points. Frenchtown had taken first at the prior tournament.

Columbia Falls Head Coach Blake Ladenburg said, “these results show how tight it is. A two-point gap is one more competitor making it to semi-finals, or an entry taking third instead of fourth. When the gap gets this close it really comes down to the last placings, and any one thing happening different can change the result.” This is a familiar place for both Columbia Falls and Whitefish, who had a similar result at the 2018-2019 State Tournament, when the result ended in a 3-point gap between the two teams. Throw in a talented and decorated Frenchtown team, and the State Tournament will be sure to come down to the wire.

Ladenburg is confident in where his team is at heading in to the final tournament, “We have taken second for the past two weekends, and have been on an upward trend each week. We know where we can still make gains and will be working hard this week to make sure that happens.” The Wildcats will be attempting to build off a strong foundation they laid at Divisionals where they claimed the top spot in both Policy and Lincoln Douglas Debate, as well as Original Oratory, while also scoring points in each and every event across the board.

The State A Tournament is being hosted virtually by Sidney, and takes place this Thursday-Saturday. Some judging slots for State still need to be filled. If you are interested in judging please email b_ladenburg@cfmtschools.net.

Columbia Falls Speech and Debate has solid performance to take 2nd at Corvallis Invitational

Corvallis, MT – January 16, 2021 –
The Class A competition continued to be tight at the final tournament of the regular season. In total Columbia Falls continued to make gains against stiff competition adding 40 points to their total from the week prior to finish second with 140 points. Ahead of Whitefish’s 136 points who finished third, but behind the first place performance of Frenchtown’s 172 points. Whitefish had placed first the week prior and Frenchtown had placed second.

Head Coach Blake Ladenburg was encouraged by his team’s performance this week, “we made up ground in events that we needed to, and overall had a strong tournament.” The team had their best performance of the season during preliminary rounds, but slipped in out rounds. As assistant coach Mikel Knutson stated, “we need to work on keeping consistent through the day, and give the same performance each and every round. If we held our performance from the first round throughout the tournament we would have been close to a first place finish”

The continued improvement was led by strong performances in both Speech and Debate. In debate the team was excited to see a second place finish by Calie Johnson and Raphe Salmon in Public Forum Debate, which was the first time the team had broken into out rounds this season. In speech Chloe Coberly and Griffin Conger had strong performances in both of their events to lead the speech team. Coberly took first place in Impromtu and 4th in Dramatic Interp, while Conger placed 2nd in both Original Oratory and Dramatic Interp.

The team will look to make final adjustments this week before the Divisional tournament on Saturday being hosted virtually by Polson. The top twelve competitors from each the east and west divisional will move forward to the State tournament the following weekend.

Logger Speech, Drama, and Debate had a successful weekend competing at the Class A invitational meet hosted by Corvallis and held virtually. It was a large meet with 20 schools represented and 240 individual competitors.

Congratulations to these students.
Despite this being a very odd season where we are spending our weekends in the Science Wing of the high school rather than traveling around the state, our students have done very well. Logger Speech, Drama, and Debate will compete in the Class A Western Divisional Tournament this coming weekend and those that qualify will compete in the state tournament the following weekend.

Columbia Falls Speech and Debate makes gains to take 3rd at Custer County Invitational

Miles City, MT – January 9, 2021 –
Coming off of a three week break Columbia Falls Speech and Debate made gains across the board to take 3rd place at the Custer County Virtual Speech meet. The team had less competitors missing, but still were down two of their top speakers who will now be out until the divisional and state meets. In all the final tally for this weekend had Columbia Falls scoring 100 points. That fell behind Whitefish’s 138 and Frenchtown’s 118 points, who were 1st and 2nd respectively.

It is clear that this is a close season. Each of the top three teams have now won a tournament, and have swapped taking second and third. Head Coach Blake Ladenburg noted the tight competition, “The competition has been strong for the past few years, but it really seems to be getting even tighter this year. I give a lot of credit to the competitors and coaches at the other schools. They are working tremendously hard. This season will come down to the last ballots.”

Ladenburg was pleased with the individual results of his team. This was the first tournament since the beginning of the season that the team scored points in each category, and he saw some real promise in some of the competitors added new pieces or joined this week. Overall the team was led by a first place finish by Eddie Chisholm in Lincoln Douglas Debate, and third place finishes by Griffin Conger in Dramatic Interp and Eleanor Hollingsworth and Finley Sundberg in Policy Debate.

Looking ahead the team competes at their last regular season tournament this coming weekend at the Corvallis virtual tournament. The team will look to continue a steady climb before the post season begins in two weeks.

Columbia Falls Speech and Debate takes First at Second Virtual Tournament

Laurel, MT – December 12, 2020 –

The Columbia Falls Speech and Debate team rebounded from their first tournament to top the competition at the Laurel Invitational Tournament. The team topped the other 19 schools to take home the first place trophy. Columbia Falls was able to close the gap in debate and win the tournament by 37 points over Frenchtown 146 to 109, a 55 point reversal from last week.

Head Coach Blake Ladenburg was pleased with the performance, “I told the students that this year was going to be a challenge and they would have to work hard to hold off the competition, and they responded this week. We have to keep up the effort to keep this trajectory going.” The rebound is promising for the team, but as Coach Mikel Knutson notes, “we are still at the beginning of the season, and we have yet to see everyone’s full team.”
Columbia Falls was led by strong performances in debate taking the top two spots in Policy Debate and the top spot in Lincoln Douglas. Speech was led by 2nd place finishes in Dramatic Interpretation by Griffin Conger and Informative Speaking by Aiden Judge. Overall 13 students placed in the top 8. The team now turns their attention to the virtual tournament this upcoming week being hosted by Havre High School. This will be the last tournament before the holiday break.

Columbia Falls Speech and Debate takes a Close Second at First Virtual Tournament
Whitefish, MT – December 5, 2019 –
The Columbia Falls Speech and Debate team kicked of the 2020-2021 season with a formidable showing at the Whitefish Virtual Tournament. Despite winning speech Frenchtown outpaced the Wildcats in debate resulting in a second place finish by 18 points.
The team was missing some notable competitors, but still managed to have an even performance when looking at the final placings. The team only missed out on placing in one debate event. Head Coach Blake Ladenburg notes, “that even performance across the events is very promising for us.” The team was led by 1st place finishes by Chloe Coberly in Dramatic Interp, and Tre Finley and Emma Stephens in Policy Debate.
Ladenburg was pleased with the performance given the unusual start to the season. “We are still adjusting to this new format. We will only improve from here.” Ladenburg noted that he still had several competitors who held off from competing in the tournament, “the uncertainty of this virtual format had a lot of our students concerned. I think we all feel more comfortable moving forward from here.”
Earlier this season MHSA delayed the start of the Speech and Debate season by one month and announced a virtual format. They also decided there would only be one tournament per MHSA school classification each weekend meaning only one AA, one A, and one B/C tournament a week. With the exception of Divisionals, where two tournaments will take place, each week is a practice State Tournament. This week the team competes at the Laurel Virtual Tournament, and end the month competing at Havre before Christmas break.

Speech and debate wins 15th straight state A title

The Bulldogs had more champions. But the Wildcats had more points.

And so the Columbia Falls speech and debate team won its 15th consecutive Class A speech and debate championship Saturday night in Whitefish.

The Wildcats edged the Bulldogs 256-216 for the title. Isaac Adams was the lone champion for Columbia Falls, winning in dramatic interpretation.

The Cats’ depth paid off, coach Tara Norick said.

“It was a team effort across the board,” she said. “We supported each other and that’s what makes the difference. It’s just a great group of kids.”

Adams was not expecting to win.

“I’m extremely excited and surprised,” he said shortly after the win. “It took a lot of effort against the odds.”

Adams noted that he’s only been with the team a couple of years. The senior didn’t even start speech until his junior year.

“I wasn’t really expecting much.”

He also took third in humorous interpretation.

While Adams may have a flair for the dramatic, he says he plans on being an accountant after college.

The Cats made it to the finals in all but one event — memorized public address. They also did very well in the debate events, which helped put them over the top, Norick added.

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team will look to take its 15th straight state title this weekend. While they won the Western A divisional crown last weekend, they know they still have a lot of work to do.

The state tournament is in Whitefish and the Wildcats haven’t won there in four years and the last time they lost a state tourney it was in Whitefish.

This year’s squad has plenty of confidence. They haven’t lost a meet yet. They credit, at least in part, a simple team rule: no caffeine and no sugar on the days of competition.

It really works, they note.

“Every year is a big deal,” said senior Suzanna Rosalez. “We all want to go out with a bang.”

The Cats are led by a core of seniors, including Isaac Adams, Maggie McKeon, Shyane Williams, Anna Pickard, Sam Lovering, Rosalez and a host of talented classmates.

At divisionals, Adams took first in dramatic interpretation and second to classmate Griffin Conger in humorous interpretation.

So what does Adams plan to be after high school?

“An accountant,” he says with a smile. “I wish it was a joke, but (accounting) is actually interesting.”

McKeon’s event — extemporaneous speech — is particularly challenging. Competitors are given a question on current events, then have just 30 minutes to prepare a 5 to 7 minute speech on it.

She took first at divisionals and has been on the podium several times this year. The event could prove valuable in her future career — she hopes to be an ambassador someday.

“We hope the long hours will pay off this upcoming weekend. All of us, competitors and coaches, are grinding to the finish and hoping that our hard work pays off,” Williams said.

The Wildcats beat the Bulldogs in the divisional tourney in Stevensville 213-161 and qualified 29 competitors for state. Stevi took third with 125 points.

Competition starts 10 a.m. Friday.

Columbia High School Speech and Debate secured a final first-place finish before it heads to divisionals next weekend.

The team amassed 204 overall points for the win, followed by Whitefish in second place with 120 points at the Polson tournament on Saturday.

Western Divisionals will be held in Stevensville on Jan. 25. The top 12 competitors in each event at divisionals advance to the state tournament, which will be held in Whitefish on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

“Divisionals is going to be a tough tournament,” Columbia Falls competitor Maggie McKeon said. “The top 12 in each event go to State. We know we will be battling in every category, but we are prepared, and we’re looking forward to it.”

Whitefish Head Coach Sara Mueller said the team is looking forward to divisionals based on the performance at the Polson tournament.

“I know the kids are driven to qualify as many as possible to the state tournament this year,” Mueller said. “They are supporting each other, reaching out to me to help prepare for state, and focused on the success of the team as a whole. This is a special group of students who have some great potential in competition and beyond.”

Columbia Falls and Whitefish high schools claimed the top two spots in a Frenchtown speech and debate tournament over the weekend after competing against 14 teams.

Columbia Falls scored 188 overall points to Whitefish’s 116.

“We are deep into the season now, with just one preliminary season tournament left before divisionals,” Columbia Falls Head Coach Tara Norick said. “We are happy to see the team performing well overall. This has been a challenging year for us, and it has required our kids to really step up and put in some serious effort to keep strong.”

Whitefish Head Coach Sara Mueller said she was proud of the team’s performance under pressure in light of difficulties getting to the tournament due to bus issues.

“I’m most proud of the team’s ability to overcome adversity as we had some struggles in getting to the tournament. The team had to manage their emotions and perform well despite these problems that were beyond our control,” Mueller said. “This was great practice for the rest of the season. Difficulties arise at all levels of competition, and success favors those who remain unflustered.”

The regular speech and debate season wraps up on Jan.18 with a tournament in Polson. Western Divisionals will be hosted in Stevensville on Jan. 25, which determines who will compete in the Class A state tournament in Whitefish Jan. 31-Feb. 1.

Columbia Falls Speech and Debate competed well at the Western Montana Regional Speech and Debate Tournament in Kalispell over the weekend as the team matched its talents against 22 class AA and A team, and squeaked out a seven point victory over Frenchtown to take home the first place class A-B-C trophy.

The Columbia Falls coaches were pleased with how their team competed over the two days, but noted there was a lot of room for improvement.

“We had a really strong showing during the preliminary rounds, and that carried us through to the end,” assistant coach Mikel Knutson remarked. “The kids slumped during the final two rounds where the stakes were higher, and that is when the final point tally got close.”

“We need to continue to perform consistently throughout the whole day to ensure we are placing where we want to be placing,” head coach Tara Norick added.

Senior Isaac Adams led the way for the Wildcats taking first in dramatic interpretation and fourth in humorous interpretation to score 14 of the team’s 46.5 points. An additional nine Wildcats placed in the top eight in their events, and eight more placed in the top 16 to gain points for their team.

“Without those eight students who placed in the top 16, we would have gone home with the second place trophy by one point,” coach Blake Ladenburg pointed out. “These are always team victories, and everyone’s performance matters.”

Columbia Falls has one more tournament in Hamilton before the Christmas break. After Christmas break, the team will have only two more tournaments before the divisional and state meets.

Balanced effort leads to speech and debate win in Ronan

A balanced effort helped the Columbia Falls speech and debate team to its third straight win to start the season as the Wildcats placed in each event at the Gail Patrick Miller Tournament in Ronan Saturday.

Eddie Chisholm earned the first-place trophy in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Isaac Adams was first in dramatic interpretation as the Wildcats compiled 117 points to win the Class A trophy. Frenchtown was second with 81 points and Whitefish was third with 76.

Columbia Falls assistant coach Blake Ladenburg was happy seeing such an even showing.

“There were events last year that we struggled to have individuals place. Getting someone to the final round in each event is encouraging for the future,” he said.

Despite the strong showing he also noted that there were some individual disappointments, and that with more work we should see more individuals placing.

The teams will compete next weekend in Missoula at a two-day tournament with a format similar to that used at the state tournament. It will be the largest tournament the team has competed in this year, with nearly 650 competitors from all classes.

“The larger AA competition really gives our team the chance to improve their skills, and learn how to manage their energy over two-days of competition,” head coach Tara Norick said.

After Missoula, the team will be back at home for the Columbia Falls invitational. The team is still looking for more volunteer judges for their tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23. Those who would like to help judge, please reach out to Tara Norick at tnorick@gmail.com.

Speech and debate team gets win at Missoula AA tourney

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team picked up another win over the weekend as the Wildcats were in action in Missoula. The Cats matched their orating skills in nine events against some of the largest schools in the state and came away with first place among Class A, B and C schools.

“It’s a really long day,” senior Maggie McKeon, who competed in Extemporaneous and Impromptu Speaking events, said. “We spend about 12 hours in competition at a big tournament like this.”

Columbia Falls had three top-three finishes as the team of Lara Erickson and Laney Conger took second in public forum debate, Suzanna Rosalez was second in memorized public address and Isaac Adams took third in dramatic interpretation.

Columbia Falls battled it out with six Class A, B, and C schools, including Frenchtown and Loyola Sacred Heart, and took first place in sweeps with 54.5 points while Frenchtown placed second with 19.

“We are definitely rebuilding our team this year, with a very large segment of our squad being young and inexperienced. This was their first two-day tournament and you could see their exhaustion,” assistant coach Mikel Knutson said. “These are talented kids, and we are feeling good about the season, but we will have to keep working hard to develop our squad as we move toward Divisionals in January.”

Columbia Falls will be hosting its invitational tournament this Saturday and is still seeking to sign up a few more judges to help with the CF tournament. Head coach Tara Norick says that anyone can participate and any help would be greatly appreciated.

“This is a great chance to see these talented kids in action. There are no prerequisites to be a judge, so we invite anyone from the community to come help out,” Norick said.

SPEECH SQUAD WINS HOME MEET HANDILY

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team played host to 22 teams and came away with another first-place trophy over the weekend.

With nearly four hundred individual event entries, the tournament was one of the largest Columbia Falls has hosted in the past decade.

While their coaches were busy running the tournament, the Wildcats were busy dominating the Class A competition, winning three events and compiling 175 sweepstakes points to easily outpace second place Whitefish’s 90. Frenchtown was a distant third with 37 points.

The team had twenty-four individuals place in the top eight, and was led by first place finishes by Lara Erickson and Laney Conger who took first in public forum debate and Isaac Adams, who won both dramatic and humorous interpretation.

Adams was thrilled with his performance noting, “It is so exciting to win at your home tournament, but to win both of my events was just an amazing accomplishment for my senior year.”

Head coach Tara Norick was thankful to the community for their help in making the tournament possible. “We had nearly 300 judging slots to fill, and the community responded with 135 judges to cover the nearly 450 volunteer hours,” she said.

As far as the results Norick was pleased with how her team performed, noting “the students really managed themselves well, and did what they needed to do to compete well all day.”

Columbia Falls will have the next few weeks off for the Thanksgiving holiday. After Thanksgiving break, the team will jump right back into tough competition competing at two class AA tournaments in Kalispell and Great Falls before Christmas Break.

Shouts and cheers filled the speech in debate room at Columbia Falls High School Tuesday morning as the team found out it had won its 14th straight state A championship, and 21st overall.

The announcement by Activities Director Troy Bowman came just days after the team was mistakenly awarded the second-place trophy at the state tournament in Belgrade.

Both teams were awarded 187 points at the tournament Saturday, and Whitefish was declared the winner on the second tiebreaker criteria, but the scoring error was discovered Sunday and corrected by Montana High School Association Executive Director Mark Beckman.

The final score: Columbia Falls 192, Whitefish 189.

“It’s just so exciting for the kids to know that their hard work paid off. Whether we won first or second, we put in the same amount of work. So did Whitefish,” Wildcat head coach Tara Norick said. “These kids, from both schools, deserve recognition for the hard work they put in this season. These two teams are just so close, they should both be proud.”

After two days of intense competition, and eight rounds of speaking and debating, the two teams were tied atop the Class A standings with 187 points each. The first tie breaker – number of first-place finishes – was also knotted at one, but Whitefish had four second-place finishes to the Wildcats’ three and the Bulldogs were declared the winners.

But as they say in football, after further review ... a math error was found.

Two errors were found in the sweeps scoring. One error was in Humorous Oral Interpretation. Both Columbia Falls and Whitefish should have been awarded 2 more points. Columbia Falls should have been awarded 7 points instead of 5 and Whitefish awarded 20 instead of 18. The second scoring error was in Dramatic Oral Interpretation. Columbia Falls should have been awarded 5 points instead of 2 points. Whitefish was correctly awarded 21 points.

That put Columbia Falls over the top and state champs.

“I was so proud of how we handled ourselves when we thought we came in second,” Norick said. “We gave it our all and did everything we could. If that was a tie and a second-place finish, we were content with that. Finding out that we actually won is amazing.”

For the Wildcat competitors, any trophy would have been a symbol of another year of hard work and dedication.

“We put so much work into this - hours and hours of work. Everyone was happy with second. Finding out that we won first feels about the same, but it is nice to get that recognition,” policy debater Shyane Williams said. “People don’t realize how much work we put into this and the feeling you get from having done well is better than any trophy they could give us.”

“This is extremely shocking,” senior public forum debater Cassidy Norick said. “I thought we had done really well and I was proud of second place, but to hear that we actually won after all of our hard work really brought it all together. I am beyond joyful.”

Columbia Falls dominated the debate side of the ledger, with first and second place finishes in both policy team debate and in public forum team debate. Whitefish topped the boards in memorized public address and informative speaking, and logged 14 competitors in the top eight among the seven speech events.

The team of Ian McKenzie and Maggie McKeon won the policy debate event for the Wildcats while Cassidy Norick and Kelsey Wright earned the top spot in public forum debate. Other top-three finishes for the Cats included Williams and Ava Foley’s second in policy debate, Lara Erickson and Laney Conger were second in public forum debate, Emmalee Hellen was second in memorized public address, Paige Moriarty was third in original oratory and Chloe Coberley was third in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Bulldogs bring home the hardware, breaking Col. Falls dynasty

The Class A speech and debate state tournament was an intense fight to the finish for the championship title.

After the tournament culminated in both teams amassing 187 points — it took not one, but two tiebreakers for Whitefish High School to ultimately prevail and bring home the state championship trophy.

It was another upset win for the Whitefish Bulldogs, ending the Columbia Falls Speech and Debate dynasty’s consecutive wins. The Columbia Falls Wildcats finished in second.

“I could not be more excited to bring home a state championship to Whitefish,” said Whitefish Head Coach Sara Mueller. “The kids clawed for every point and have for most of the season. For it to end on a second tiebreaker was a perfect finale to the season. Columbia Falls was well coached, powerful, and prepared. Speech and Debate is alive and well in the Flathead Valley.”

The state tournament, held Jan. 25-26 in Belgrade, was a nail-biter to the end with Whitefish excelling in speech events and Columbia Falls in debate.

Leading the Whitefish team were state champions Bethany Barnes in Informative Speaking and Grace Benkelman in Memorized Public Address.

Columbia Falls state champions included: Ian McKenzie and Maggie McKeon in Policy Debate and Cassidy Norick and Kelsey Wright in Public Forum Debate.

“It was pretty incredible,” Columbia Falls Head Coach Tara Norick said about the tiebreaker. “The odds that we would have nearly 300 competitors over eight rounds in 10 different events, and have the results end in a tie, is mind boggling.”

Norick said she was proud of the season’s accomplishments.

“This is a young team, and one of the smallest we’ve had in several years. Every single person on the team contributed to our effort and we really worked together to support each other. Whitefish has an outstanding program and put together a great team this year. It has been an honor competing with them all season, and this is a perfect way to finish the year — a true match up down to the wire.”

Whitefish upsets rival C-Falls for divisional win

Whitefish High School Speech and Debate turned the tide on rival Columbia Falls with a first-place finish on home turf at the Class A divisionals over the weekend.

Amassing 227 overall sweepstakes points, it marked Whitefish’s first victory over Columbia Falls High Schools this season. Columbia Falls finished in second place with 170 overall points.

Aiding the team’s success were five champions and four runner-ups. Whitefish Head Coach Sara Mueller said the team was “pretty besides themselves” following the win.

“It was fully a team effort, as every entry on the team scored points toward our sweepstakes total,” Mueller said. “We look forward to taking this momentum into the state tournament next week where I am sure all teams will come ready to compete at a high level.”

The win is a boost for the Whitefish team as they prepare to once again face Columbia Falls, which defends its Class A state championship title on Friday and Saturday in Belgrade.

Havre High School speech and debate saw a successful run at the Class A eastern divisional tournament in Laurel this weekend, qualifying the entire team for state competition with one Blue Pony just missing bringing home a divisional champion medal.

Veteran Lincoln Douglas debater Kaleb Gardner, a senior, went undefeated in the four preliminary rounds to break into the finals round. In a tough debate against a varsity Sidney debater, Gardner lost on a 1-2 split and ended in second place.

First-year speaker Elaine Atkinson, a sophomore, broke into finals in humorous oral interpretation of literature and ended with a seventh-place medal.

Freshman Melanie Veith, competing in informative speaking, just missed bringing home a divisional medal in her first year competing. Veith was tied for eighth place after five rounds of competition, but lost a tie-breaker that could have put her in finals to compete for a top-eight finish. She ended in ninth place.

Havre policy debate teams LillieAnn Mecklenburg and Dartanion Kaftan and Grace Crantz and Tristan Molyneaux earned medals by ending in fourth place and fifth place, respectively, and the public forum debate team of Joram Randolph and Noah Teasley brought home eighth-place medals.

The team now heads to Belgrade for the state Class A tournament Friday and Saturday.

Columbia Falls High School Speech and Debate is on a roll, winning its sixth tournament in Frenchtown on Saturday.

Columbia Falls accumulated 137 overall points for a first-place finish, followed by Whitefish High School, in second, with 116 points. This was the narrowest victory for Columbia Falls this season, according to the coaches.

“We are looking forward to continuing to build towards the state tournament” Head Coach Tara Norick said. “We know that we earn every win, and there is some amazing competition out there this year. We are going to work hard and stay focused, and not take anything for granted.”

In Class B-C, Bigfork High School placed second with 16 overall points, behind Loyola with 62.

Glacier High School rose to the top in Class AA, finishing first with 85 overall points followed by Sentinel with 34.

A mix-up on the Montana High School Association calender led Polson High School debaters to attend the meet prepared for the wrong topic for a meet over the weekend, so they competed with just a few minutes to prepare their cases.

PHS Speech and Debate Team placed fourth at their second meet of the season against Columbia Falls Saturday, Nov. 17.

PHS student Violet Anderson placed third in Impromptu Speech and eighth place in Informative Speech.

Joe McDonald and Hallie Tyler each tied for third in Public Forum Debate, though after the tie-breaker they were awarded fourth place.

Davis Smith placed eighth in Lincoln-Douglas Debates.

Columbia Falls took first place, while Whitefish claimed second and Frenchtown took third.

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team earned a second-place finish over the weekend as it competed against larger Schools at the Missoula AA meet.

Matching orating skills against some of the largest schools in the region, Wildcat speakers competed in eight individual and two team events against students from 16 different schools over two long days on Friday and Saturday.

“It’s actually pretty grueling,” senior Wildcat competitor Cassidy Norick said. “We spend as much as 12 hours in direct competition at a tournament like this, debating or speaking, on our feet.”

In AA competitions, Classes A, B and C are grouped together for the team standings and Columbia Falls finished second overall, behind Class B powerhouse Loyola Sacred Heart. It was the first time in three competitions this season that the Wildcats did not finish first.

“We are definitely rebuilding our team this year, with a very large segment of our squad being young and inexperienced,” assistant coach Mikel Knutson said. “These are talented kids, and we are feeling good about the season, but we will have to keep working hard to develop our squad as we move toward divisionals in January.”

Columbia Falls’ 27 competitors performed very well against stiff competition from the larger school as the Wildcats placed three teams in the top six in policy debate led by Calie Jo Johnson and Tre Finley in third place. Shayne Williams and Ava Foley were right behind them in fourth place while Ian McKenzie and Maggie McKeon were sixth.

Columbia Falls also did well in public forum debate as Emma Stephens and Griffin Conger were third and Lara Erickson and Laney Conger were sixth.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Jayden Webb was 12th and Raphe Salmon was 14th while Sam Lovering finished 13th in extemporaneous speaking. Ave’ McDonald was ninth in humorous interpretation while Isaac Adams was 12th. Norick was ninth in informative speaking and Paige Moriarty finished 14th in original oratory.

The team will be at home this weekend as Columbia Falls hosts its annual meet Saturday. The team is still seeking to sign up a few more judges to help with the tournament. Anyone can participate, and does not need to be an expert to be a judge.

“This is a great chance to see these talented kids in action. There are no prerequisites to be a judge, so we invite anyone from the community to come help out,” Knutson said.

Columbia Falls High School Speech and Debate propelled itself to a 13th consecutive state title in Corvallis on Friday and Saturday..

“We had a much younger team this year, but they put in an amazing amount of work and that dedication paid off,” Columbia Falls Head Coach Tara Norick said.

Six Columbia Falls competitors brought home the hardware with first-place finishes: Ava Chisholm, Impromptu Speaking; Jacob Hohman, Humorous Interpretation; Jordyn King, Memorized Public Address; Paige Moriarty, Original Oratory; and Shyane Williams and Danielle Schwalk, Policy Debate.

Columbia Falls racked up 244 sweepstakes points to retain its title. State runner-up, Whitefish High School Speech and Debate, held its own, earning 172 total points. Polson High School finished third with 65 points.

Whitefish Head Coach Sara Mueller said it was a “tight tournament to the end” and was proud of the young team’s performance.

Whitefish had three individual champions: Mary Hooks and Hayden Brandt, Public Forum Debate and Naya Brigette, Dramatic Interpretation.

Polson’s Taylor Bloomfield placed first in Informative Speaking.

SPEECH TEAM CRUISES TO WIN AT DIVISIONAL TOURNEY

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team dominated the Western A divisional tournament Saturday in Ronan, racking up 206 points for the championship. Whitefish took second with 122.

The Wildcats had first-place finishes from Laney Conger and Maggie McKeon in public forum debate; Jordyn King in dramatic interpretation; Ava Chisholm in humorous interpretation; and Jacob Hohman in informative.

The squad will travel to Corvallis Friday and Saturday for the state meet, where they’ll look to win their 13th straight title and 20th overall.

All 30 competitors qualified for state.

“These kids are at the school nearly every day after school practicing and working, and they give up virtually every weekend from November through January to compete in tournaments all across the state,” coach Tara Norick said. “I am proud to see all of our team make the cut to go on to state. They earned it.”

The squad won’t let off the gas. Even though it’s finals week at Columbia Falls, the practice schedule will be focused and intense before heading to Corvallis, Norick said.

Both Laurel and Whitefish are the teams to beat, she noted.

“We will continue to prepare, to practice, and to be focused on competing at the highest level. This will be the first time we go up against the competition from the Eastern Division, so we know this is not over yet,” Norick said.

COLUMBIA FALLS SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS FOR HOME MEET

Columbia Falls’ speech and debate team got back to its winning ways at the Hamilton Invitational last week. With their full team on hand, the Wildcats notched a solid victory with multiple placings in every event, beating Whitefish 219-114.

Last weekend’s loss to Whitefish was surely fresh in everyone’s mind coming into this tournament. In Kalispell the previous week, Whitefish landed a strong first place over both Loyola and Columbia Falls, so expectations were high for this match up.

Individual speech events represent a broad spectrum of skills and subjects, from humorous interpretations of literary works to original speeches written by the students. Columbia Falls consistently has competitors who do well across that spectrum. In Hamilton, Columbia Falls had top eight placements in every event.

Ava Chisholm, senior and four year veteran of the team, out spoke orators in two different events to land first place in both Humorous Interpretation and Impromptu speaking, against over 40 competitors in each event. In total, Columbia Falls sent 18 of their 24 speech competitors to the semi-final round, and placed in the top eight in all seven speech events and three debate events. Highlights include senior Jordyn King, who took second in Dramatic Interpretation, freshman Paige Moriarty’s second in Original Oratory, and multiple top placements in Memorized Public Address, Humorous Interpretation and Informative.

In the three debate events, Columbia Falls ran strong as well. In Policy team debate, Whitefish and Columbia Falls went head-to-head directly, with two Columbia Falls teams clashing two Whitefish teams in the semifinals round. Whitefish scored victory in both battles, leading to an all-Whitefish finals in this event with Columbia Falls taking third, fourth, and fifth.

In Public Forum team debate, Columbia Falls sent three teams to the scoring stage - third place for Cassidy Norick and Kelsey Wright, fourth place for Lara Erickson and Jesse Rusche, and eighth place for Delaney Conger and Maggie McKeon. Whitefish team Seth Carmichael and Zoe Dugan placed sixth and Mary Hooks and Hayden Brandt secured seventh.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Columbia Falls freshman Chloe Coberley shined once again with an eighth-place finish out of 35 competitors. Chloe is one of several freshman who have demonstrated phenomenal early skills on the team, Norick said.

Columbia Falls will be hosting their two-day invitational tournament on Jan. 5-6, after Christmas break. The state tournament will be January 25-27 in Corvallis. The team is seeking to sign up judges to help with the Columbia Falls tournament. Anyone can participate, and Norick emphasizes that you don’t have to be an expert to be a judge.

“One of the good things about high school speech and debate is that we use lay judges for all of our competitions, so it is a great way for the community to turn out and support the team and get an opportunity to see these amazingly talented kids in action,” she said.

Glacier High School took the top honors in a two-day Kalispell Speech and Debate tournament over the weekend, beating Flathead High School 224-191. The tournament featured teams from all over western Montana and one team from Pasco, Washington.

Glacier has had the edge over Flathead in the Kalispell tournament for the past four years, but this competition was much closer than most. It wasn’t decided until the final rounds, when Glacier had winners in eight of the fifteen events. Flathead had five first-place finishers and Whitefish High School and Sentinel High School in Missoula each won an event.

Whitefish as a team got first place in the ABC division, with only a slight edge over Loyola Sacred Heart High School in Missoula and about 40 points in front of Columbia Falls.

WILDCAT SPEECH AND DEBATE TAKES FIRST AT LOYOLA TOURNEY IN MISSOULA

A split Columbia Falls Speech and Debate team won the Loyola Invitational Saturday and took second at Browning with a limited squad.

At the Loyola Sacred Heart Invitational in Missoula, Columbia Falls went head-to-head against 18 Class A, AA and B schools from around the region. Racking up points across every event — seven individual speech and three debate categories — the Wildcats scored 155 total team points to easily capture the Class A trophy for the meet. Stevensville came in second in the Class A competition, with 41 total points, with Frenchtown earning 30 points for third.

A small group of 12 Wildcats — most of the freshman members of the team — brought their best game up against local rival Whitefish and a group of 15 other regional teams at the Browning Invitational. Although Whitefish — with its full team competing — captured the first place trophy, Columbia Falls’ small contingent took a solid second and captured places in several individual events.

“We decided to split the team so that everyone could participate in a competition over the weekend,” said coach Tara Norick. “We wanted to sample the competition from multiple schools as we build our program to the state tournament at the end of January in Corvallis. This was a great chance for many of the freshman members of our team to shine.”

In Browning, freshman Emmalee Hellen blazed to a first place finish in memorized public address — a 7-10 minute memorized speech highlighting a famous speech. In humorous interpretation, where speakers read a humorous work of literature in a dramatic (and hopefully hilarious) fashion, Ave’ McDonald captured third place. Rounding out the freshman powerhouse, public forum debate team Lara Erickson and Jesse Rusche argued their way into the finals round against a senior Whitefish team and captured second place in the match up. In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Sophomre JJ Boles secured a solid fifth place slot.

At Loyola, competitors racked up points in every event, with firsts in several categories. Senior Ava Chisholm was the top speaker in dramatic interpretation, Jacob Hohman was first in humorous interpretation, and Jordyn King took second in MPA. Cassidy Norick and Kelsey Wright took first in public forum debate.

“Our students were focused on the competition and are continuing to improve. We are looking forward to the Class A competition after Thanksgiving in Whitefish Dec. 2, where we will compete head-to-head against Whitefish,” Norick said.

Columbia Falls traveled to Bozeman High School for the biggest speech and debate tournament of the season. More than 800 competitors from all over the state - most from Class AA schools, came for an intense two-day matchup of words and wills.

The Wildcats brought 26 competitors to the meet, with several key seniors still missing in this third tournament of the season, going head-to-head against AA teams with nearly 100 members. Columbia Falls demonstrated their solid skills and had speakers and debaters advance to finals rounds in every event.

Although total team sweeps are battled out by class, individual competitions are mixed, so Wildcat speakers were matched up against top orators from the big schools. The team demonstrated once again the breadth of talent on the squad with placings in multiple events. Columbia Falls achieved 37.5 tournament points to place first in the Class ABC sweeps competition, with Whitefish garnering 11 points to take second.

“We are amazed with our team this season. We came into this tournament with very simple expectations: Observe, learn, practice. We really did not feel we would be progressing into out-rounds in multiple events. I am intensely proud of these kids and the extent of talent we are seeing this year,” Columbia Falls coach Tara Norick said.

Speech was led by Seniors Jordyn King taking fifth in memorized public address and Lizzy Olsen taking eighth in dramatic interpretation. Wildcat debaters scored points in all three debate events. Juniors Cassidy Norick and Kelsey Wright fought an extensive field of AA public form teams to take eighth out of 30 competitors. Freshmen Tre Finley and Callie Jo Johnson advanced to octa-finals in novice policy debate to finish in the top 16 and Ella Hutcheson and Ian McKenzie also finished in the top 16 for varsity policy debate.

In varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate, senior Gabrielle Merrill argued her way to a sixth place finish among 45 competitors in the varsity competition, and junior JJ Boles placed 16th in that category. Policy team debaters Danielle Schwalk and Shyane Williams pushed all the way to the semi-final round to place third behind two Bozeman top teams.

“This tournament really helped us demonstrate our strengths across multiple events,” Norick said. “And it allowed us to identify some areas to work on, of course. Next week we return to the Class A circuit with a trip to Loyola Sacred Heart in Missoula. Loyola has a strong team, and we are looking forward to the competition.”

Flathead High School hosted the season’s one day Kalispell Kickoff speech and debate tournament on Saturday. The event drew competitors from five AA schools, as well as from A, B and C schools in the state.

The overall team winners were divided into two categories, one consisting of AA schools and all the other schools competing against each other. The AA winner of the meet was Glacier High School, followed by Flathead High School in second and Sentinel High School out of Missoula in third.

In the other category, Columbia Falls won and Loyola took second. Whitefish came next with a third place finish.

WILDCAT SPEECH, DEBATE TEAM ROCKS IT IN FIRST TOURNEY

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team opened its season with a victory in Stevensville, outpacing rival Whitefish by 114 points to open the season.

The Wildcats were up against 13 other Class A schools.

The Columbia Falls team is coming off of 12 straight State Class A championships, and fielded another strong team to start the year. Thirty-one students from all four classes traveled to Stevi, and competed in all seven speech and all three debate events.

The speech and debate program at Columbia Falls has a powerful history, garnering a total of 19 State Class A titles overall, with the last dozen consecutive.

A new round of strong freshman contenders has injected some additional energy into an already well-honed team, and they placed across the board in all events, said head coach Tara Norick.

Norick attributed the team’s ongoing success to this breadth of talent and ages.

“We are so excited for this season. We have an experienced upperclassmen team, with 11 seniors and five juniors, and this year we have a great influx of freshmen who are eager and gifted,” she said.

In Stevi, seven of the freshmen ended up on stage taking awards across six different events.

Speakers and debaters placed in every event in the competition, with several first and second place spots.

Jordyn King took first place honors in Memorized Public Address, as well as garnering second place in Dramatic Interpretation. In the Public Forum team debate category, Columbia Falls mounted a sweep of the top three spots, with the finals round a match-up between two Columbia Falls teams — Cassidy Norick and Kelsey Wright versus Laney Conger and Maggie McKeon. Norick and Wright landed the victory.

The team has a busy season ahead of them, with tournaments on six of the next eight weekends.

The season culminates in divisionals on Jan. 20 in Ronan, and the state tournament on Jan. 25-26 in Corvallis. Columbia Falls will host their home tournament on Jan. 5-6.

This Saturday the competition heats up, with the first AA hosted tournament of the season at Flathead High in Kalispell. They are expecting teams from at least 22 schools and several hundred competitors.

“It’s great to start the season with the Stevensville meet, where we can cut our teeth a bit at a smaller competition and get ready for the heavy hitters in Kalispell, and the following weekend in Bozeman. AA meets are an entirely different beast, but we are looking forward to carrying this momentum forward,” Norick said.

Cats hope 13 is a lucky number for speech team

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team.

With more than 50 students in the program, the Columbia Falls speech and debate team is hoping to nab its 13th state A title this season.

The Wildcats have 15 seniors and 19 new competitors, including returning state champions Jerelyn Jones and Ava Chisholm. Chloe Foster and Chisholm were also national qualifiers last season.

The Cats also have a host of returning talent that qualified for state last year in Colin Norick and Annabel Conger in policy debate; Ian McKenzie and Danielle Schwalk in policy debate; Anna Nicosia and Mary Ward in public forum; Cassidy Norick and Kelsey Wright in public forum; Sarah Posey in public forum; Danny Morgan and Alex Garate extemporaneous; Willie Baltz in impromptu; Joey Chester and Emma Erickson in memorized public address; Brandon Karberg humorous oral interpretation; and Jacob Hohman in dramatic interpretation.

Head coach Tara Norick has been with the program for 13 seasons and this is her seventh as head coach. She is assisted by Barry Conger, Candy Gross and Alicia Gillen.

“Our seniors are strong seasoned returning competitors. Their strength is in their work ethic and the supportive nature of our team,” Norick said. “We are focused on being a cohesive supportive group and performing our best as a team with points at state in every event.”

The team has already started out strong, winning its opener in Stevensville and a meet in Kalispell that featured five AA schools.

Norick said the team to beat in the west is Whitefish and in the east, Laurel. Laurel hosts the state tournament this year.

With fall sports just ending this week, it will be awhile before the team is at full strength. Chisholm and Nicosia play volleyball and Karberg football.

Chisholm is a junior. Nicosia and Karberg seniors.

Norick is optimistic about this year’s squad.

“I’ve got strong people in every event,” she said.

She said part of the success of the program is the family atmosphere the team has — the older students coach and encourage the younger ones, Norick noted.

The Columbia Falls High School speech-and-debate state championship dynasty continued Saturday as the team brought home its 11th consecutive title.

This time around, however, the gap between first and second was extremely close at the Class A state tournament in Belgrade.

Both Whitefish and Columbia Falls were neck-and-neck the entire competition with the winner decided by the final ballots.

In the end, the Wildcats rose to the top with 229 sweepstakes points and the Whitefish Bulldogs, in second place, amassed 204 points. Polson was third with 83 points.

Columbia Falls’ individual championships went to — Ava Chisholm in Humorous Interpretation; Chloe Foster and Emily Getts in Expository Speaking; and Jerelyn Jones in Dramatic Interpretation.

“We are grateful and deeply humbled by the level of competition we have encountered up until the last second of this season,” Columbia Falls Head Coach Tara Norick said. “Our students worked so hard right until the end and we couldn’t be more proud.

Whitefish Head Coach Sara Mueller said she was proud of her team’s accomplishments at state. With three individual champions winning five events. Whitefish’s first-place finishers were — Abbie Belcher in Extemporaneous Speaking and Impromptu Speaking; Sam Benkelman in Original Oratory and Memorized Public Address; and Dakota Henson in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

“I’m really proud of what we accomplished,” Mueller said.

Polson had two individual championships — Annabelle Smith and Sophia Speckert in Policy Debate and Mollie Lemm and Katelyn Toland in Public Forum Debate.

Corvallis High School is the Montana Class A Drama championship team for the third year in a row.

The team has won 10 state championships and three second-places in the past 14 years.

Coaches are Doug and Michelle McConnaha.

“All the credit goes to the students who worked hard, practiced constantly and worked beyond their own expectations,” Doug McConnaha said. “They had fun doing it and I believe that leads to success.”

The state tournament was held in Belgrade, Jan. 29 and 30, with 14 A schools participating in two days of tough competition.

The highlight of the awards ceremony for Corvallis was the Humorous Duo competition where the school’s competitors finished first, second and third. Seniors Easton Powell and Josh Smith are state champions competing with “Open to Interpretation,” sophomores Colton Mason and Nathaniel Heckeroth took second and Kristen Saturday and Zoe Brouwer took third.

In Dramatic Duo Acting, Kim Bounds and Sebastian Reed took first with “New York Minute,” Taylor Saturday and Sarah Cerdenia placed fourth and Hannah Brown and Josh Smith took fifth.

In Classical Duo, Nathaniel Heckeroth and James Gladden place fifth and Emma Pickett and Claire Pickett placed eighth. In Humorous Solo Abigail Brion placed second, Kristen Saturday placed sixth and Sebastian Reed placed eighth. In Pantomime Gui Dourado placed fifth and Nate Labrosse placed seventh. In Dramatic Solo Acting Zoe Brouwer placed sixth.
