POLSON VS STEVI

April 4, 2024

Pirate tennis opens belated season with inaugural wins
by John Heglie

At Polson, Pirate tennis teams were finally able to inaugurate their season against the visiting Yellowjackets of Stevensville as the hypothermic collusion between figurative Jack Frost with the late March roaring of the winter lion dissipated long enough to actually play some matches. The Lady Pirates swept the singles matches, while the Lady Yellowjackets countered with their own sweep of doubles duels as Polson had a player play twice in the #1 doubles match.
In #1 singles, Julia Barnard elevated her game after getting stung by her Yellowjacket opponent in the opening set to close out the match with back-to-back 6-4s.
The Pirate boys inaugurated their state title defense as they sailed through their opposition, but not without encountering some choppy seas along the way. Taegan Gage applied a bookend sandwich to win his match when his Jacket opponent captured the middle set at #2 singles. Brother Strider Gage won in two sets, but the opener extended into extras before the set could be secured.
The girls backhand bonanza carried a hint of international intrigue served with dash of  European flavor. Polson #2 singles Summer Newman competed against CeCe Franchi, an Italian foreign exchange student, while the Polson #3 doubles duo of Adamary Guerrero/Ziya Walker competed against a double dose of Deutche in German foreign exchange students Maja Masinic/Jana Puell.

NW 'A'

DOGS DOMINATE DIVISIONAL

It was a strong closing day for Whitefish on Friday at the Northwestern A Divisional tennis tournament at Flathead Valley Community College and The Summit.

The Bulldogs had the singles champions in Gracie Smyley and Brendan Buls and boys doubles champs in Mark Anderson/Colter Upton.

Polson’s Berkley Ellis and Qia Harlan won the girls doubles title.

Buls and Anderson were defending divisional champions. Anderson won doubles last year with Forrest Kobelt.

Whitefish also won the team titles for boys and girls. Polson was second and Columbia Falls third.

The last time Whitefish swept divisional team titles was 2006.

It’s the second straight for the boys and their third in four years.

“I couldn’t be happier to see this group of guys win another divisional title,” Whitefish boys coach Chris Schwaderer said.

“The camaraderie that I see every day is really special. These kids love to play tennis and help each other get better.”

The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to Class A state play at Flathead Valley Community College next week.

Smyley defeated Hannah Schweikert 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

It was the second meeting of the season for the two standouts. Smyley won the first one in straight sets.

“It was excruciating as a coach (to watch), and it was the same for the parents and the participants,” Whitefish girls coach Patrick Dryden said.

“It had to be a fans delight.”

Smyley trailed 5-2 in the first set and battled back from there.

“She just eliminated her unforced errors (after that),” Dryden said, “still played aggressively.

“Hannah played extremely well,” he continued.

“She hit everything back, put a lot of spin on the ball. It was tough to break her serves. She served so well.”

Buls rolled by Joe McDonald of Polson in his final 6-0, 6-0.

“Brendan Buls is a deserving champion,” Schwaderer said.

“He worked his way through the bracket with pure efficiency. Brendan has worked so hard to get where he is, and I admire his commitment to the game and his cerebral approach. Not only does he want to make himself better, but he is also driven to help the other players on the team. He cares as much about their game as he does about his own. If this kid is not a tennis coach some day, I’ll be shocked.”

Anderson/Upton defeated John Gilk/Camryn Lingle of Columbia Falls in their final, 6-2, 6-2.

“Mark Anderson and Colter Upton are equally special,” Schwaderer said.

“They were both beginners three years ago, but due to their athleticism and love for tennis, they progressed rapidly. I give a lot of credit for their success to the fact that they are multi-sport athletes who know how to compete. They have not bought into the idea that they have to specialize in one sport in order to succeed. The variety of skills that they bring to tennis has helped them to be as successful as they are.”

The Whitefish boys and Polson girls are defending Class A state champions.

Correction

It was incorrectly reported that John Gilk and Tristan Grein of Columbia Falls finished first in boys doubles at the Northwestern A Divisional tennis tournament last year in Friday’s divisional tournament story. They finished second. Whitefish’s Mark Anderson and Forrest Kobelt were the champions.

Corvallis Frenchman qualifies with host of Blue Devils, Hamilton Freshman snags SWA singles crown

HAMILTON — When 17-year-old Aubrey Poitier signed up to be an international exchange student, he hoped to experience a new culture and go out of his comfort zone.

"When you go to a place and you meet people, you realize how much more life there is out of the little area you live," said Poitier, who is from Western France. "To experience new friends, this landscape — wow, it's awesome — and I really wanted to try American football. That was really funny."

He checked that box with the Blue Devils football team in the fall.

Now Poitier also gets to experience Montana's Class A state tennis tournament

Corvallis' No. 2 singles player from across the pond won his consolation semifinal matchup Friday against Dillon's Sam Jones, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch a state berth. He then took home the bronze medal at the weekend's Southwest A divisional tennis tournament in Hamilton against Dillon's Matt Knight, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, using a flair that was fashioned overseas and a strategy perfected against his host-family "brother" and Blue Devil teammate.

The style came from watching some of the world's best players on television back home.

"He's got that Aubrey style, it's a little bit of that European style. He likes the touch-shots and the angles. He likes to put action on the ball," Corvallis boys' coach Chris Maul-Smith said. "Aubrey came out with some experience from France, he loves to watch tennis and he can use that as a style and a model.

"When he was out there playing today, he had it in mind what he wanted to do."

The game plan Poitier used in the consolation semifinal — a slew of returns and well-placed lob shots to the back of the court — was honed while playing Corvallis' No. 1 singles player Caleb Warnken.

Warnken placed second at the Southwest A divisional after falling in a thrilling three-set match with defending Class A state champ Bradley Rakich of Dillon, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. The same long lanky frame that helped Warnken become one of the best tennis players in Western Montana and capture a silver medal on Friday was one Poitier has had to learn how to hit around at practice and at home, when the two play game after game of table tennis.

"He always wins, but I'm getting closer every time," Poitier said of Warnken, laughing. "He's very good at volleys, and he's got longer arm — that's my excuse every time (Warnken wins). My thing against him is lobs. I have to lob against him and hit my passing shots."

The scheme worked against Jones and qualified Poitier for state as a host of Blue Devil fans and teammates at Hamilton's Canyons Athletic Club applauded their adopted athlete.

"Back in France we compete in clubs. It's very interesting and very funny (compete for a school) and have that spirit behind you," Poitier said. "You want to win for them. It's very cool."

Poitier will have quite a few from Corvallis joining him at the Class A state tournament next week in Kalispell, too.

***

Along with Poitier and Warnken, the Blue Devil boys also bring doubles partners Ryan Hubbard and Jaymark Liedle. The two battled back from a semifinal loss against Butte Central to eventually capture the consolation championship. Liedle and Hubbard fell behind in the third-place game, too, dropping the first set, 6-3, but the boys maintained their focus to gather the third seed from the Southwest.

"When we played Butte Central we started out slow. Every time we started out slow," Hubbard said. "It was like warming up for us, but we got it together.

"We started playing a little loose. We started building each other up," Liedle added.

With Warnken, Poitier, Liedle and Hubbard all scoring points, the Blue Devil boys — co-defending Class A champs — brought home a second-place divisional trophy.

The Corvallis girls took first by sending a slew to state, seven total, thanks in part to stellar doubles play. It was an all Corvallis doubles final, with the tournament's top seed, Megan Kirkland and Christina Weidkamp, meeting No. 7 seed pairing Molly Powell and Bailey Jessop.

The underdogs won, too, as the Powell/Jessop duo took a long Saturday afternoon battle against their teammates in a tiebreaker set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Both squads are through to state, though.

"This is so awesome, it's never happened for me in all the years I've been coaching. The thing about this is no matter what, we're gonna win this match," Blue Devils girls' tennis coach Mike Fehr said before the championship doubles match. "We're taking a whole ton of players. This is the first time I've ever taken seven players."

In the girls' singles championship match, Corvallis was unable to capture the title as Madeline DeLeo, a Blue Devil sophomore, fell in battle of underclassmen to Hamilton freshman Eliana Foss.

Both girls showed class beyond their years throughout the tournament and on Saturday.

"Madeline played great, they're young kids and they're both going to be around playing some good tennis for a long time, they're both really improving their games," Hamilton coach Jeff Lewis said. "Madeline hit her corner shots yesterday really well to get here and today Eliana just landed her power shots.

"That's becoming (Foss') game, she's been working on it this year. She's a strong girl and she's got the control and she can bang that ball over like nobody's business."

Foss' strong forehand shots indeed ruled the day as the Bronc tennis player took home the divisional title in her first-ever tournament run.

"I'm too excited for words," Foss said, neatly summing up her emotions on winning the Southwest A title.

She takes the Southwest A's No. 1 seed to state and DeLeo will be No. 2. Butte Central's Tricia Joyce, the No. 2 seed entering divisional play, bested previously top seeded Ashlyn Sandall, of Dillon, in the consolation final. That gives Joyce the third seed at state and Sandall a four.

Rounding out the Top 4 in boys' doubles was Dillon's Mark Southam and Nathanile Leonardson as tourney champs and Butte Central's Aidan Petritz and Guido Ossello at No. 2.

On the girls' side, Stevensville's Jamyn Beller and Callie Cavill captured the consolation championship with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Corvallis' Cecily Gerber and Danielle Coates. For Beller and Cavill, who made it to state last year as a four seed, this year's third-place finish meant a lot.

"We always try to stay positive because that's how you can lose a game quickly if you get negative," Cavill said. "We both wanted to improve on last year and we knew we had to fight for it."

Whitefish boys, Polson girls take NWA net titles

May 18, 2018 at 5:00 am | The Daily Inter Lake

LIBBY — Whitefish dominated the boys field while Polson finished ahead of the pack to take the girls title at the Northwest A divisional tennis tournament on Thursday and Friday.

The Bulldog boys racked up 71 points, more than doubling runner-up Polson’s 35. Polson’s girls tallied 51 points to Whitefish’s 39.

Whitefish accounted for three of the four semifinalists in boys singles. Brendan Buls lost only two games over his final two matches to take the title easily.

The Bulldogs also won the boys doubles championship, as Mark Anderson and Forrest Kobelt bulldozed Columbia Falls’ John Gilk and Tristan Grein 6-1, 6-3 in the finals.

Kyler Lundeen and Berkley Ellis of Polson overcame Whitefish’s Aubrey Hanks and Olivia Potthoff 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a competitive girls doubles final.

The Pirates also claimed the girls singles title via Shea McGuinness, who defeated Claire Carloss of Whitefish 7-6, 6-2 in the championship.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to next week’s Class A state tournament beginning next Thursday in Polson and Ronan.

Hardin boys, girls sweep team titles at Eastern A tennis

Eastern A Tennis Divisional

Hardin's David Evans reaches to hit the ball in the doubles final with partner Ben Noteboom at the Eastern A Tennis Divisional at Elks Tennis Center on Friday.

BETHANY BAKER, Billings Gazette

BILLINGS – Being a singles tennis player can be a lonely place. Just you and your thoughts, good or bad. Billings Central’s Emma Putnam tries to be her own pick-me-up.

“It’s kind of hard to not get in your head sometimes,” Putnam said Friday afternoon at the Elks Tennis Center, “so I normally cheer myself on. It sounds pretty lame.”

Sound, consistent shot-making helps, too, and Putnam had a lot of that in topping Hardin’s Sharmayne Hardy for the Eastern A girls singles title. Hardy’s a steady player, as well, so Putnam’s 6-3, 6-3 victory was a matter of staying within herself, Putnam said.

So what does Putnam say to Putnam in moments of crisis or calm?

“Like, ‘it’s OK,’ ‘you’ve got it, get the next one,’ “ Putnam said. “Or when I end up hitting a winner I’ll in my head use that point to focus on the next one. You really have to take it from point to point, you can’t focus on the big picture, because when you’re down it’s very hard to get back up.”

The two-day tournament – a qualifier for next weekend’s state tournament -- concluded Friday evening with Hardin claiming the other three titles and both team titles, as well.

Makiko Reisig and Kate Murdock went to the wire to beat Glendive’s Skyler Scarpholt and Talia Zimdars 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. It’s their third year playing together as a doubles team, but it’ll be their first trip to state.

“Complete bliss,” Reisig said. “It was like …”

“Finally,” Murdock finished, eliciting a laugh from both players.

The boys doubles final not only featured teammates against teammates, but brother against brother. As such, the match between Hardin’s Ricky Hill and Jonathon Noteboom and David Evans and Ben Noteboom was a bit contentious at times (a line judge was called for shortly into the first set).

When it was over, though, and Hill and Jonathon Noteboom had claimed a 7-5, 6-0 win, there were hugs all the way around. Evans and Ben Noteboom led 5-2 in the first set, but Hill and Jonathon Noteboom won the next 11 games.

“On a crossover I told my partner, let’s make the greatest comeback we can,” Hill said.

And how was it brother against brother, and then beating that brother for a title?

“It’s … it’s indescribable,” said Jonathon Noteboom, the elder of the siblings by two years. “I don’t even know what to say. It’s hard, but … I don’t even know what to say.”

Gabe Passes gave Hardin its third divisional championship when he beat Billings Central’s Jake O’Leary 6-4, 6-3 in the boys singles final.

Passes was aggressive, using well-placed approach shots to get to the net on several occasions. Once Passes was there, O’Leary had difficulty getting the range on his lobs and Passes took advantage.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever really tried it,” Passes said about being a net player. “Before, if the ball came right back at me, I’d kind of get scared.”

Then with a chuckle, he added: “That’s why I don’t play doubles.”

The Bulldogs boys had 68 points, followed by Billings Central (43), Miles City (3) and Glendive (2). Hardin’s girls finished with 47 points, Billings Central was second (30), Glendive third (19) and Miles City fourth (12).

In the consolation finals, Billings Central’s Elliott Keller defeated Hardin’s Jace Guptill 6-1, 6-2 in boys singles; Hardin’s Famous Lefthand and Ryan Old Crow beat Billings Central’s Maguire Payne and Ben Harsha 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in boys doubles; Miles City’s Emily Toennis edged Hardin’s Abigail Noteboom 7-6 (5), 6-4 in girls singles; and Billings Central’s Abby Fitzgerald and Blayne Meyer defeated Hardin’s Cailei Cummins and Mary Anne Herrara 6-1, 6-1 in girls doubles.

All those players qualified for the state tournament, which is next weekend in Ronan and Polson.

LIBBY COACHES EXCITED FOR WHAT TENNIS SEASON HOLDS

March 20, 2018 at 9:30 am | By BENJAMIN KIBBEY The Western News

Libby coaches excited for what tennis season holds 1

JESSIKA JONES (BENJAMIN KIBBEY/THE WESTERN NEWS)

Libby High School’s tennis coaches are upbeat about both teams after their first few practices.

The Lady Loggers have 21 players, and Head Coach Kyle Hannah said he is excited to see the competition for the 10 varsity spots.

“I am extremely happy with what I’m seeing so far,” Hannah said.

Six of nine returning varsity girls have state competition experience from last year, he said. “So they should be able to carry our girls team pretty far this year.”

The large number of freshmen girls who have come out also bodes well, Oedewaldt said.

“Most of my juniors and seniors are the kids that really want to win, but there’s a few freshman that have that competitive edge,” Hannah said.

Hannah and Oedewaldt agreed that the players who just want to have fun are as welcome as those who want the top spot.

“It doesn’t matter to us if they want to compete, if they just want to be social,” Oedewaldt said. “We just hope they learn the game so they can have that for their life.”

Hannah said he thinks the team gets a few more players that way, including those who, as they learn the game, find they do want to compete.

On the boys team, some of the players have never picked up a racquet before, but they are applying themselves, some even staying after practice to keep hitting, Oedewaldt said.

“They’re trying. They’re trying hard,” he said.

“I’m pleasantly surprised with the effort that the kids are showing for not ever really picking up a racquet and hitting,” Hannah said. “They’re really listening, they’re trying to do stuff.

While they may do some things wrong, it’s just inexperience, not bad habits that need to be broken, he said.

“And once they figure out that muscle memory of how to actually swing and hit a tennis ball, it’s going to come along a lot smoother for a lot of these kids,” he said.

Boys with varsity experience may serve as leaders for the team, such as sophomore Sebo Sanders, Hannah said.

“(He) will have to just take the bull by the horns and take that leadership role,” he said. “And I think whatever he does, kids will follow.”

Libby will have their first matches at Polson on March 23 starting at 9 a.m. They will face Polson and Hamilton.

Libby tennis will be at home for the first time on Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. for the Libby Invitational.

PIRATES LOOK TO RELOAD

March 15, 2018 at 11:59 am | By Jason Blasco

Pirates look to reload

FORMER POLSON Pirate player Colin Kenney will be difficult to replace in the 2018 season. However, Coach Bob Hislop is confident he will have several players ready to elevate their level of play as his Pirates get ready for the start of the season. (Jason Blasco/Lake County Leader)

The Polson boys tennis team will be filling the void after losing four Class A all-state tennis players, but this year, like every year, Pirates’ coach Bob Hislop anticipates his team will adjust in order to compete.

Tennis, like every single MHSA-sanctioned sport, will change the competitive dynamics and landscape of their sport with teams like Libby and Ronan moving back up from Class B to Class A for the 2018 season.

The Pirates lost senior leaders Colin Kenney, Cadis Chowning, Matt Sitter and Jaron Morgan headed into the start of the season.

Hislop acknowledges his team is losing a lot but also expressed optimism his current Pirates will rise to the challenge.

“The boys lost a ton when we lost Sitter, Chowning, Colin and Jaron because every one of those guys were all-state last year,” Hislop said. “That group is a pretty big bunch to pick up.”

In order to compensate for the losses, some of the veteran Pirate tennis players have put in significant work over the summer, according to Hislop.

“We do have a pretty extensive summer program and we will still have Caden Foreman-Webster and Johnny Moore, who are two players that lived on the court this summer,” Hislop said. “(Johnny and Caden) were able to get a lot of work done and will see the fruits of their labor in some shape or form this season.”

Polson also hopes to see the emergence of Sam Schultz and Carson McDaniel, who both qualified for the MHSA Class A state tournament in Kalispell but didn’t place.

“Carson was a very solid player, even though mobility was one of his issues but he has great hands on the team,” Hislop said of the Pirates’ all-state golfer.

The Pirates will also have a couple of sophomores that could potentially make up for a lot of the senior leadership they lost from last season. Trevor Schultz and Kendal Foreman-Webster are two players Hislop said he would like to “step up.”

“They will take some lumps in the regular season but they are good enough athletes they will catch up during the season,” Hislop said. “They will develop and be competitive right now. That is the nice part.”

Hislop isn’t the type of coach to name a lot of underclassmen that don’t have a lot of documented court experience in order to keep expectations reasonable. However, he knows he has a few players that could be solid anchors headed into the future.

“We have some lesser known seniors and a lot of new kids since we haven’t started yet,” Hislop said. “With the rest of the team, we should have some hopefuls that have potential.”

Also this year, the boys MHSA Class A division will be down.

“I don’t think the division is super strong this season,” Hislop said. “The Whitefish boys will be good. We hope we will reload even though we will take our lumps. We have five quality coaches and kids that are willing to work and want to get better. This season should be a fun process.”

Lady Pirates look to reload

THE POLSON Lady Pirates tennis team will try to replace its No. 1 player Cassie Carlyle as they prepare for this season. Last year Carlyle finished second in the MHSA Class A state tennis singles. STATE 'A' TENNIS FINAL RESULTS.

Whitefish girls win state crown

BOZEMAN -- The Whitefish girls' tennis team brought home the top hardware from the State A tournament for just the second time in school history as the tournament wrapped up Friday at the Bobcat Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs' first state title came in 2004.

"It’s something that was always in the back of our minds but nothing we really discussed," Whitefish coach Patrick Dryden said. "I think we were flying under the radar and kind of snuck up on the entire field this week."

An all-Whitefish girls' doubles final contributed plenty of points to the Bulldogs' dominating win. Katie Fyall and Anna Peterson teamed up to down teammates Heather Luedke and Hannah Madsen, 6-2, 6-3, in the finals, giving Whitefish 30 points to second-place Billings Central's 19.

"The kids really battled against each other every day in practice and just got better and better," Dryden said.

Their semifinal matches ended within minutes of each other. Fyall and Peterson took a 6-2, 7-5 win over Marenah Crockett and Ceeara Staiger of Glendive, while Luedke and Madsen defeated Jennifer Womack and Nicole Thompson of Dillon, 6-4, 6-4.

"We really didn't show the nerves that some of the other teams had," Dryden said. "We were very comfortable. I think once you get the ball rolling it gets contagious. (Fyall) and (Peterson) won their semifinal and then (Luedke) and (Madsen) won the other semifinal 10 minutes later. Katie and Anna pulled out a huge win when they took down the Glendive team (Marenah Crockett and Ceeara Staiger). They were undefeated and runner-up last year. We jumped on top of them 3-0 and never let up.

"I think we kind of caught them by surprise. We used the Aussie (I) formation and I think it caused them some difficulties. In the second set we were behind 4-1 and battled back. We just swatted a lot of balls out of the air and next thing you knew we had the pressure on them."

Dryden just stood back and watched as the two teams battled in the final.

"You don’t really coach, you just kind of savor the moment," he said. "There were a lot of smiles all the way around."

***

Harrison and Barclay Fagg of Billings Central knew if their paths crossed at any point before the final tennis matches of their high school careers the fusion would result in two emotional puddles.

“We literally have not been able to speak to each other today because we’d cry if we do,” Barclay said moments after her methodical 6-0, 6-0 dispatching of Hardin’s Madisan Chavez at the Bobcat Tennis Center gave her a second consecutive Class A girls' singles title. “It’ll be interesting to see how it goes afterward.”

The Fagg family contingent of more than 20 found out less than an hour later, after Harrison fended off former state champion Jeff Miller of Havre 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) for his first singles title and third overall.

As Harrison hugged his rival and coaches on one side, Barclay wiped her eyes as she crossed the court and met her brother for a poignant final embrace. Nearby, their mom, Karen, dabbed tears and their father, Russell, watched with a lump in his throat as their children hugged and posed for photos.

Harrison’s victory carried added significance by seeming to lock up Billings Central’s fourth consecutive boys' state title. As it turned out, a rousing three-set doubles victory by Simon Marshall and Joey Nichols over Glendive’s Josh Hoffer and Jory Opp a short time earlier proved pivotal to the Rams’ four-point edge over the Red Devils.

Alex Raymond of Hamilton fell in the semifinals and wound up fourth.

STATE 'A' TENNIS PREVIEW

Hamilton's Raymond takes 20-0 singles mark to showcase meet

  • BILL SPELTZ bill.speltz@missoulian.com

Perfection has come at a price for Hamilton's Alex Raymond.

"I definitely worked my butt off to get where I am now," said the singles phenom. "And I'm still trying to get better."

Raymond was motivated to kick it up a notch with his training after reaching the semifinals of the State A tennis tournament as a freshman last May. He hopes to do even better this time around, carrying a 20-0 record into a state meet that will be held Thursday and Friday in Bozeman and Livingston.

Raymond is in an elite group of four expected to challenge for boys' singles bragging rights. Havre coach George Ferguson feels he has the best player in the state in Jeff Miller and he has history on his side since Miller beat Raymond in the semifinals last year before losing in the state finals to a player who graduated.

Billings Central's Harrison Fagg can also stake claim to being the best in the 2016 field. He earned two State A doubles golds before switching to singles this spring.

Then there's Corvallis' Caleb Powell. He doesn't have the credentials of Raymond, Miller and Fagg but he has looked strong in head-to-head battles with Raymond.

"I've lost three sets this season – two to Caleb Powell," Raymond noted. "We put it all on the line on the court when we play each other."

Powell took Raymond to a third set just last week in divisional finals. That may have been a good thing for both players since they'll head to state knowing anything is possible and concentration is key.

Raymond expects elevation to play a role at state. Bozeman sits at 4,856 feet and Livingston is almost as high, so it's going to take an adjustment from playing in, for example, Hamilton, where the elevation is 3,615 feet.

"The fact that it's almost a mile high means the ball will travel farther," noted Raymond, who is on the opposite side of the draw as Miller. "It makes more chance that the ball will go out.

"Getting my serve in will be a good thing. And I'll try to come in (to the net) as much as I possibly can. But it's situational to who I'm playing."

Chances are good western Montana will also be represented in the boys' doubles final. Whitefish has a couple of capable teams in Brenden Bulls/Austin Reese and Ryan Brown/Cole Turgeon and the same goes for Polson with Quaid Harlan/Colin Kenney and Cadis Chowning/Matt Sitter.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, Kenney suffered what appeared to be a season-ending knee injury on match point in a divisional final against Chowning and Sitter. If he cannot go Thursday, Polson No. 1 singles player Jaron Morgan will fill the void.

Glendive, Billings Central and Havre are the teams to beat in the boys' meet. Polson is a longshot but could garner enough points for a trophy if its two doubles teams go deep into the draw.

***

The Polson girls are western Montana's best bet to earn team hardware. Pirates veteran coach Bob Hislop has a history of bringing deep teams to state and overwhelming the competition, earning two first-place trophies over the past eight seasons.

"I'm really, really happy with where we're at, but obviously these girls have to go and get the job done," said Hislop, whose Pirates will be represented by two doubles teams and two singles players. "Dillon has the most players there. We played them in the regular season and beat them in a couple close duals. They've got eight girls at state and Billings Central has the closest thing to a (sure thing) with Barclay Fagg in singles.

"We or somebody have to take care of the rest of that (Billings) team and make sure they don't get as far as they think they can. Glendive is right in that too and Whitefish is a sleeper. They could finish two teams in the top four in doubles."

Fagg is a heavy favorite to repeat as singles state champion and she is on the same side of the draw as Polson's Mollie Lemm, Columbia Falls' Emily Getts and Corvallis' Emma Pickett. Consequently, western Montana's best bet to reach the finals is Polson's Marlee Congdon, who took sixth last season.

"Marlee has been there all along this season," Hislop said of his divisional champ, who has just one loss this season, that coming to Getts several weeks ago. "She's really bought into our coaching and we've done some work on her strengths and it's really helped out."

Getts finished fourth at state last season and she may match or improve on that feat this time around. But she'll need to turn things around from last week when she lost to Lemm at divisionals.

"Lemm is the one that sort of came out of nowhere for us," Hislop said. "She's a very cerebral player with a nice mix of topspin and under-spin.

"She just really knows how to handle the moment. She gave Marlee (Congdon) everything she wanted in the (divisional) championship. It's hard to play against as friend and that match was (Lemm's) first loss."

Whitefish is a good bet to come away with a medal in doubles. The Bulldogs' No. 1 team of Katie Fyall and Anna Peterson beat teammates Hannah Madsen and Heather Luedke in a divisional final last week in Polson. Fyall and Peterson also have experience on their side, having won two matches together at state last season.

"I think the four doubles teams from the Northwest, any one of them are capable of winning the whole thing," Hislop said, alluding to Whitefish's teams along with Polson's teams of Shawna Lenz/Cassie Carlisle and Olivia Hewston/Kyler Lundeen.

"Shawna and Cassie, that was their first loss of the year in divisionals. They didn't think they played well. If we could win one  or both of our opening- round doubles matches we'd really like where we're at as a team, especially with our singles players and their situation."

One last time on the tennis courts

Blue Pony tennis teams chase medals and trophies in Bozeman

May 25, 2016

Shannon Hanson

Havre High senior Jerod Boles follows through on a serve during a Havre Invitational match last month. Boles is one of seven Blue Ponies headed to this week's Class A state tournament in Bozeman and Livingston.

There's no doubt the Havre Blue Ponies have had a successful run in tennis. In just the last 14 seasons, the Blue Pony boys and girls have combined to win state 15 trophies and five Class A state championships.

Now, the Ponies will try for more hardware when the 2016 Class A state tournament starts Thursday morning in Bozeman, and concludes Friday afternoon in Livingston.

Havre qualified four boys and three girls through last week's Central A Divisional, and while that might not seem like a lot, HHS head coach George Ferguson always believes quality is every bit as important as quantity at the state level.

"Sure, we would have loved to be taking an entire bus full of kids to the state tournament, and we had a lot more kids who are certainly good enough to be there," Ferguson said. "But, the divisional tournament doesn't always work like that, and on the flip side, I've had teams of just four girls, and teams of just three boys either win, or come close to winning state championships in past years. And this year, we are taking seven very good tennis players to state players who can do a lot of damage individually. And when you do damage individually, the team points rack up, and that's always been our approach at state."

In the case of the Pony boys, quality is certainly on Havre's side. While defending champion Billings Central, along with Glendive have strong teams, too, the Ponies' lineup, of Jeff Miller and Dustin Haas in singles and Jerod Boles and Jake Sedahl in doubles, has to be considered a favorite to hoist the big trophy this weekend.

"Are we the favorite?" Ferguson said. "I don't know. There's plenty of good players and good teams at the state tournament. But, I will say, we have some big guns going to state, and if they play like I know they can, then we will be in the mix at the end, and that's all anyone can ask. I'll just say, I have a lot of confidence in those four guys, that's for sure."

When it comes to favorites, Miller is certainly one in singles. He was the 2014 state champion and a runner-up last year, so he knows what it takes at this level. He'll get stern tests from the likes of Central's Harrison Fagg and Hamilton's Alexander Raymond among others, but, Ferguson noted that when Miller is on top of his game, as he has been this year with his 34-2 record, he's very hard to beat.

"Jeff has seen and done it all in high school tennis," Ferguson said. "Nothing will be a surprise to him or catch him off guard this weekend. He knows what he has to do to achieve his goals. He's one of the best players in all of Montana, and he's going to play great in his last state tournament. I know that."

Boles and Sedahl have also been to the state tourney before, Boles playing last year with Noah Landgraf, while Sedahl played singles. Now, the duo is looking to bring a state doubles title back to Havre, and while Ferguson said there are strong teams from Glendive and Central standing in their way, the pair really shined last week in Lewistown, and he expects the same, just as he does from Haas, whose making his first trip to state.

"Jake and Jerod are playing so well right now," Ferguson said. "It has taken them a while to grow into a doubles team, just as it does with any new team. But, they're right where they want to be right now. It's going to be tough, the boys doubles draw is loaded with strong teams, and a few of them are right in our path. But those guys gained a lot of confidence winning last week in Lewistown, and I think that's going to carry right over into this week. I'm really excited for them, and for Dustin, because I think those three guys give us the depth and firepower we need to make a run at a trophy this week."

Making a run at a trophy may be a little more difficult for the Havre High girls. The senior doubles team of Rainey Stoner and Madison Huebsch, along with sophomore singles player Paige Nelson are all state tourney first-timers. And, none of them are a top seed in this week's draws. Still, just like the boys team, Ferguson has extreme confidence in his girls, too.

"I know those three will play really well," Ferguson said. "They all three wanted to get to state really bad this season, and they achieved that goal. But, I also know they're not going to be satisfied with just getting there either. They are going to go out and put forth a great effort and try and win matches. They are all very competitive and they want to advance and make some noise this week."

Stoner and Huebsch have been together for the past three seasons, and this weekend will be their last hurrah. After finishing second in the Central A last week, they are a No. 2 seed in the tournament, and drew a tough team from Dillon in the opening round. Still, Ferguson said that all teams in the draw shouldn't underestimate his Blue Ponies.

Meanwhile, Nelson, after finishing fourth in the Central A, has the tough task of playing defending state champion Barclay Fagg in the opening round. And while beating Fagg will be a tall order, Ferguson said that the experience Nelson will gain in that match, and the tournament, will be invaluable.

"I think Rainey and Madison are a team that other teams will not want to play," Ferguson said. "One thing they know, they know how to compete and play the game of doubles. They've been doing it for so long. So I expect them to play very well. They are going to be a very tough out for anybody who has to play them this weekend.

"And Paige is right where she should be right now," he continued. "She is our third straight number one player for us who played that spot as a sophomore, and made it this far. So, while she's got a tough bracket this week, she's going to come out of it a much better player, and it's exactly how you want a young player's career to progress. So this is going to be a great weekend for Paige, no matter what the results of her matches turn out to be."

A great weekend is all Ferguson is hoping for and asking of his seven players making the trip. Yes, the HHS boys have lofty goals, and have had lofty goals all season long, and yes, the draws will be tougher on an inexperienced girls team. But, at the end of the day, Ferguson said his goals for his players remain the same.

Havre High senior Rainey Stoner, along with doubles partner Madison Huebsch and singles player Paige Nelson, make up the Pony girls team headed to this week's Class A state tournament in Bozeman.

"I don't want them to feel any added pressure," Ferguson said. "I want them to go out and play for themselves first. They've earned that right at this point. Yes, it's still partially a team sport, and yes, team trophies are at stake. But I just want each player or each doubles team to just focus on themselves, have as much fun as possible and play the best tennis of their lives. They deserve that experience, and if they do that, the team points will add up anyway.

"This is an exciting time in these kids' lives," Ferguson added. "Whether it's our senior's last state tournament, and last matches of their careers, or it's the young kids who are here for the first time, this is something really special for them, and something they'll always remember. So, we're going to focus on one match at a time, and see how it all turns out in the end. But I'm really excited for these kids, they are all great players and great kids, and I can't wait to get this tournament started."

The 2016 Class A state tournament begins Thursday morning at the Bobcat Tennis Center in Bozeman. The tournament is slated to conclude Friday afternoon with the second day being played at Livingston.

Havre High's Jeff Miller wrapping up a phenomenal tennis career

May 25, 2016

Shannon Hanson

Havre High senior Jeff Miller has put together one of the most successful tennis careers in HHS history, including winning the 2014 Class A state singles championship. Miller is hoping to add a state team title to his brilliant resume.

With some people, certain things come naturally. It's like they were born or destined to do it. Jeff Miller is that way with tennis. The sport is like second nature to him and as he goes for his second individual state title in three years, there is little doubt, he's one of the best Havre High has ever seen.

When it comes to accomplishments, Miller has accumulated a laundry list of them from his time on the tennis courts for the Blue Ponies. It started his freshman year with a Central A divisional title and victories at the state tournament, but in truth, his path to the individual state title he would eventually win in 2014, started much further back, basically to the day he was born.

In Miller's family, tennis is king. All three of his brothers played for the Ponies and two of them, Jeremy Heninger and Kyle Miller, won state championships as doubles players. His other older brother, Nick Heninger, was also an accomplished tennis player at HHS and at one time or another, all three have assisted current head coach George Ferguson in coaching the team.

"I think they have been a big part of it," Miller said. "They (brothers) got me started in it, they got me into it. They raised me around it and going to all the tournaments and watching all of them play and going to the courts with them and going to practices, they have basically made me the player that I am today."

While Miller has been shaped by his brothers, he has also been shaped by his head coach, Ferguson, another relative of his, who has coached Jeff and Kyle during his tenure.

"I think it's been good," Miller said of his coach-player relationship with Ferguson. "I think sometimes it's been easier because we are family, but we have our disagreements, too. But he has really helped me a lot throughout my career. He is always there to talk and always willing to go play, no matter what, so it's been the best possible situation for me."

Miller may be quick to give much of the praise for his development to his coach and his brothers, but the simple truth is that he is the beneficiary of his own legendary work ethic. His records and trophies, which are many, are simply the result of countless hours on the courts, fine tuning and transforming his game into that of a champion.

"Jeff is kind of the last of a dying breed in Montana high school tennis," Ferguson said. "He's always played other sports, and he's a great all-around athlete, but tennis has always been his focus and his passion. From a very young age, he started putting a lot of time into his tennis. He's probably spent more time on our tennis courts the last 10 years than anyone in the history of our program. Actually, he's spent more time there than any resident of Havre probably. He's also traveled around with me, playing in a lot of extra tournaments and, anymore, that kind of commitment to tennis isn't as common.

"Add to that the influences of Jeff's and our families," Ferguson added. "With all of his brothers being really good players and having that same passion for tennis, as well as myself being there every day, and it's just been an amazing journey and one that was kind of set in motion a long time ago. But, at the same time, Jeff deserves all the credit for where he is right now because he chose this path for himself and he did all the things that it takes to get to the point is right now with his tennis career. He put in the hard work and he has been dedicated to this sport and to our program from the time he was very young. No one forced him or had to ask him to be a tennis player, that's what he wanted to be. And I really admire that about him, and am very proud of him for that."

For the past three seasons, Miller has been the standard-bearer of Havre tennis and largely because of him, that standard has been high. During his time at HHS, the Ponies have captured four Central A championships, an achievement that was helped by Miller's four consecutive titles.

In addition to winning four divisional titles, Miller is also the all-time record holder for team points earned in the Central A conference. In fact, the senior has been so good at divisionals, that he never even lost a set.

Yet, as good as Miller has been at divisionals, he's been equally impressive on the biggest stage, the state tournament. As a freshman, he finished fifth, before winning his state title as a sophomore. Last year, as a junior, he finished runner-up and is favored to win another state title this weekend at the Class A state tournament in Livingston/Bozeman.

No matter what happens this weekend, Miller will go down as one of the truly elite players in program history, as he is currently one of just five Ponies to have won a boy singles state title. However, a first-place finish Saturday would make him just the third player in school history to win multiple titles joining Kyle Baltrusch (four) and Kellan Malone (two).

And after a season in which he has posted a 34-2 record and finished third in the No. 1 singles bracket at the prestigious Helena Invitational, which is the best finish by a Havre player in that bracket, ever, his place among the best in the state in high school tennis is not in question.

"Jeff is as good as it gets as a high school tennis player in Montana," Ferguson said. "He's one of the most successful players Havre High has ever had in terms of a four-year career. When it comes to his tennis, he's got everything a top player needs. He has a very complete, polished game, he's strong on the baseline, and at the net. He has a serve that's very much a weapon, and most importantly, he's got an extremely high tennis IQ. He's always been a student of tennis, he's always wanted to learn and know more about the game."

Now after years of studying and practicing, Miller's career, at least his high school one, is coming to an end. However, the senior, who has been ranked by the USTA Intermountain Tennis Association and the Montana Tennis Association throughout his high school career, has a number of college offers he is contemplating, which means his tennis days could be far from over.

But for everything he has achieved, in Miller's mind, there is one thing that's missing and that's a team championship. Certainly, he wants to win that second state singles title, but ultimately, it would mean even more if he could hoist the one trophy that has alluded him as a Blue Pony.

"That would be the dream for us," Miller said. "We came in wanting to win a team title, and we have never really gotten close, so that would really mean a lot."

With so many great Blue Pony tennis players before him, where Miller ranks among them is certainly an interesting debate, but even more interesting is the argument about who is the best among his family, which is saying something in its own right.

"There is definitely some competition in our family about who is the best," Miller said. "I am just glad that I was able to live up to that. I think if I am able to get two, that would put me up there. All my brothers want me to win and they would be happy for me, but there is still that competitiveness about who is the best."

Shannon Hanson

Havre High's Jeff Miller is one of the top players in all of Montana high school tennis. Holder of many HHS school records, Miller heads to his final state tournament this week in Bozeman.

Win or lose this weekend, Miller's legacy as one of the greats in the annals of Blue Pony tennis is firmly intact. And not just because of the wins, the trophies and the championships, but because of how he did it: forging himself into a champion with a desire for excellence and exceptionalism that has yet to be distinguished and will not soon be forgotten.

"As a tennis coach, and someone who truly loves this sport, and someone who loves to go to the courts and teach this game every day, it has been an honor and a privilege to be able to coach Jeff Miller," Ferguson said. "I have been blessed in my career to coach so many really good tennis players and hundred's of just awesome kids. But, to be able to coach and be around a tennis player of Jeff's caliber every single day, really since he was 8 or 9 years old, it's been one of the best experiences of my life. Jeff is truly special, on and off the court, and it's just been an amazing ride for us together. I'm so proud of all that he's done as a Blue Pony tennis player, and I just really admire him in so many ways. It's been an incredible journey and one that I'm going to cherish forever. That's what he's meant to me and to Blue Pony tennis."

Dillon hoping depth leads to success at state

  • Ron Balaskovitz The Montana Standard

Dillon coach Lois Woodard was quick to respond when asked if she had ever sent 15 players to the state tennis tournament before.

"Never," she said. "We've talked about it a lot. We had a rally (Tuesday) and I talked with other people around Dillon and we've never, in the history of tennis, had that many kids going."

The 15 players includes eight girls and seven boys -- all six doubles teams, two girls' singles players, and one boys' singles player -- fresh off a weekend that saw the Beavers convincingly sweep the Southwestern A divisional titles last week in Hamilton and Corvallis.

The weekend included three champions in singles and doubles.

Despite all that success, one player for the Beavers thought it wasn't out of reach when the season started.

Dillon's No. 1 boys' singles player, Mark Waldrup, who took fifth at state last year, told Woodard prior to the start of the season that the Beavers could win the divisional.

Waldrup proved to be a prophet, but in a bittersweet way as he was hurt during the opening match of the year and hasn't been able to play since.

"That inspired them," Woodard said of Waldrup's preseason speech and injury. "He stayed with the team and worked with the players and traveled with us all year."

But Woodard says it's the team's work ethic that has been the recipe for success, especially considering that many of the players heading to state had never played tennis before joining the team in high school.

"We've got hard workers in this group," she said. "They've put in extra time and stayed late after practice. Early in the season, I did six days a week of practice before our first matches and the kids were enthusiastic and motivated.

"It's a great batch of kids, and you don't always get that."

One of those players who hadn't played until last season is Todd Nordahl who, along with teammate Kyson Wilson, is part of the Beavers' No. 1 doubles duo on the boys' side.

Nordahl was encouraged to play by his father, Dillon football coach Rick Nordahl, as a way to work on his footwork and lateral quickness.

On the girls' side, No. 1 singles player Mariah McClure leads the way after rolling to a divisional crown last week. She sits atop the bottom half of the singles bracket.

Despite all of the players reaching this weekend's state meet, Woodard maintains the same goal she's had since taking over the program: finish among the top five.

"I'm not dreaming of taking state," she said. "I just want them to think and play to their very best, and we'll take whatever those results are. My goal is to place among the top five, but I would be thrilled if they placed."

But Woodard also admitted that having so many players at the tournament brings a potential to rack up points that others schools won't have.

"We have the numbers," she said. "If they can all advance a few rounds, either in the main or the consolation, that would be great. At state, a lot of teams have one great player or one great doubles team. We're hoping to get points out of our depth."

Central sends top doubles teams to state

Prior to last weekend's divisional tennis tournaments, Butte Central head coach Becky Hancock said the strength of the Maroons all season was the play from their doubles teams.

That proved true in Hamilton and Corvallis, as the top doubles squads for both the boys' and girls' teams locked up spots at state.

The girls' duo of Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn entered last weekend's divisional as the top seed following an undefeated regular season in conference play, one year after narrowly missing out on a trip to state.

One of the duo's biggest strengths is continuity after the girls played together all of last season in the No. 1 doubles spot.

While the duo's undefeated run through the league came to an end at divisionals, it will still enter as one of the toughest outs in the girls' doubles draw despite a No. 4 seed.

The Maroons will face Lindsay Lane and Sophia Badten of Park in the opening round.

The boys' duo of Sam Sterns and Cam Johnson, who were placed together for the first time at the start of the year, found success as the season went along. That culminated in a trip to the divisional semifinals before picking up a third-place finish.

The duo will be in the top half of the bracket, and will face the Park duo of Ladan and Rakim Ricketts in the first round.

DIVISIONAL 'A' TENNIS FINAL RESULTS

Northwest A tennis: Whitefish boys, Polson girls win divisional

POLSON -- The sheer number of Whitefish boys and Polson girls that made it to the second day of the Northwest A tennis tournament helped power the two teams to a conference title.

The Bulldog boys, who topped second-place Polson 60-43, put three into the singles' semifinals, and it was an all-Whitefish championship. Max Smiley earned bragging rights among his fellow Bulldogs by taking the title over Eric Holdhusen, 6-2, 6-2.

Stevensville's Colton Belcourt, who lost to Holdhusen in the semifinals, was the only other representative from a different school in the boys' singles championship bracket.

The Polson boys stole some points from the eventual champions, though, as Cadis Chowning and Matt Sitter teamed up to take the doubles title. They beat Whitefish's Ryan Brown and Cole Turgeon in the semis, and Chowning/Sitter won the title against fellow Pirates Quaid Harlan and Colin Kenney by injury default.

The Polson girls trimmed Whitefish, 54-42. Pirates Mollie Lemm and Marlee Congdon each won their semifinal matches and squared off in an all-Polson title match. Congdon won that one, 7-5, 6-4.

Whitefish represented both squads in the girls' doubles championship. Katie Fyall and Anna Peterson beat the duo of Hannah Madsen and Heather Luedke.

Dillon dominates for SWA tennis titles

The Dillon Beavers will be well-represented at next weekend's Class A state tennis tournament after dominating the competition at the Southwestern A divisional in Hamilton.

The Beavers relied on the strength and depth of their doubles duos, sending all six, three girls and boys teams, to next weekend's state meet.

That helped the Beavers to 69 points on the girls' side, well clear of second place Corvallis' 27. The Beaver boys finished with 53 to score a convincing divisional crown.

Butte Central's girls finished third with 18 points, while the Maroon boys were fourth with 17.

The Beaver girls saw the doubles duos of Kodi Ferris and Rachael Nye meet with Jen Womack and Nicole Thompson for the district crown after both clinched state bids with semifinal wins.

Womack and Thompson then picked up a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win for the divisional title.

In the consolation finals, Tessa Sawyer and Adrianna Southam gave the Beavers a third place finish after beating Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn, 6-3, 6-4. Both duos will be at state next weekend.

In singles play, Dillon's Mariah McClure and Maggie Magee met in the finals of the winner's bracket, with McClure winning 6-2, 6-1 for the district title and the No. 1 seed at state.

Like their girls' doubles teammates, all three of Dillon's boys' doubles teams clinched bids to the state tournament.

The Gunnar Maisch and Isaak Koslosky took on Kyson Wilson and Todd Nordahl in the winner's bracket finals before Wilson and Nordahl emerged with a 6-3, 6-3 win for the title.

In the consolation finals, Butte Central's Sam Sterns and Cam Johnson dropped Mark Southam and Luke Peterson, 6-4, 6-2. Sterns and Johnson are the only Butte Central boys who clinched a spot at state. Both duos in the consolation finals needed three set wins to clinch their trips.

In boys' singles action, Brad Rakich of Dillon was the lone local player to clinch a spot in Bozeman next week, beating teammate Caleb Jones in three sets in the consolation semifinals to clinch a spot, then taking third with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) win over Josh Smith of Corvallis.

The Whitefish boys tennis team has high hopes entering the season with a core of returning players ready to get to work.

Sophomore singles players Max Smyley and Eric Holdhusen, along with doubles duo Chaffin Ross and Ryan Brown all are back on the court after making an appearance at last year’s State A boys tennis tournament.

That core will be surrounded by a deep group of tested hitters, like senior Nathan Fauth, and juniors Thomas Carloss and Ethan Potthoff.

“I think we’re going to have a really strong foundation,” said boys coach Chris Schwaderer. “We have a lot of depth, and a lot of those kids are bigger and stronger and they’ve played more in the offseason.”

All totaled, 23 boys came out for the team this spring.

Schwaderer says his top singles players are already looking sharp.

“Max looks great and his strokes keep getting better,” he said. “He should be one of the top players in the state.”

“Eric is always dependable, and he’s gotten better over the winter and looks really good and consistent.”

The coach says with so much depth, he’ll be faced with some tough decisions on deciding who should play where in the rotation.

“It’s a good problem to have,” he said. “We have the luxury of finding the best chemistry and combinations.”

With valley snow long gone, the team has already hit the courts at Grouse Mountain for practice.

“We usually don’t get snow off the court until the end of March, and then it takes awhile to get our momentum going,” Schwaderer said. “The fact that we can get out and swing the racquet is great.”

Schwaderer says a team goal is to aim for the Northwest A divisional crown.

“We just missed it last year,” he said. “We’re always shooting for the divisional title.”

The Northwest A now includes Stevensville after Libby dropped to Class B.

Schwaderer has brought on assistant coach Kim Codiga to lead the JV team.

“He’s a tennis guy and will be a good match with the kids,” he said.

Whitefish opens the season April 9 with matches at Polson against the Pirates and Dillon.

Girls tennis stacked at doubles

The Lady Dogs tennis team has the weapons and experience to make some noise in the state level with a good group returning to the court.

“Expectations are going to be higher this year,” Whitefish coach Pat Dryden said of his strong roster. “We have the potential to do something at state.”

Coming back are doubles teams Anna Peterson and Katie Fyall, and Heather Luedke and Hannah Medsen. Both teams earned a state berth last year. Cailyn Ross also is returning after earning a trip to state and playing as an alternate.

The group of girls should anchor the Lady Dogs’ roster.

“Heather and Hannah worked hard this winter,” Dryden said. “Anna and Katie have been taking some private lessons and look sharp.”

It’s the strongest Whitefish has been at doubles in years, Dryden said, “without question.”

“We can put three really good doubles teams on the court,” he said.

On the singles side, Page Sproul is looking like a top contender, along with Holly Hileman, Jessica McCoy and Savannah Krause. Two foreign exchange students in Janette Kolarzik and Lili Szundy could add to the depth, as well.

In all, 30 girls came out for the team, including five seniors and six juniors.

As usual, Polson will be a force in the Northwest A. Stevensville is a newcomer to the league after Libby dropped to Class B.

While Dryden says he doesn’t put much stock in chasing a divisional title, he does want to get as many girls qualified for state as possible to make a run at some hardware.

“We’ve got to be a top-5 team at state,” he said. “If we can work our way into a trophy, that’d be even better.”

The Lady Dogs open the season April 9 at Polson with matches against the Lady Pirates and Dillon.

Polson girls have plenty of firepower

Bottom of Form

Coach Bob Hislop's formula for State A tennis success has served him well, with two girls' team titles and one boys' crown in the past eight years.

He's looking to make it four championships in nine years for Polson this spring and he might just have enough depth on the girls' side to pull it off.

Bob Hislop

"We pride ourselves in program first and individual success second, so it works out pretty neat for the kids," Hislop said. "We try to keep teams pretty deep. I don’t have any idea how it happens but girl-wise it seems to work out better than boys."

Hislop is building his girls' squad around five seniors and three juniors. That group includes state-tested Marlee Congdon, Mollie Lemm, Shawna Lenz, Cassie Carlyle and Olivia Hewston.

"Our top eight are very tough," the coach said. "They're very dedicated, putting in a lot of time during the off-season.

"We have a nice mix of singles and doubles players and we just have to work on combinations like anybody does and see how it works out."

Congdon and Lemm will likely stay with singles after earning valuable experience in that department last season. Congdon took sixth at the state showcase meet in Missoula and although Lemm lost in her two encounters, Hislop calls her "probably the most improved player on the team" this spring.

"These are girls that are athletic, involved in other sports and do a very good job with the tennis racquet," he said of his top eight. "Then we've got a really talented sophomore three-sport athlete (Kyler Lundin) and two other seniors (Tessa Nunlist and Natalie Wheeler) that didn’t make state last year but could help this year."

Livingston earned State A girls' bragging rights last season and Billings Central was second. The Rams will be tough with Barclay Fagg back to defend her state singles title and Whitefish and Dillon are also expected to make some noise in the State A team race on May 26 and 27 in Bozeman and Livingston.

Whitefish has two salty veteran doubles teams in Anna Peterson/Katie Fyall and Heather Luedke/Hannah Madsen. Peterson and Fyall just missed qualifying for the semifinals at state last year, losing a tough three-setter.

"You coach as long as I have and you do your darndest to get them ready to go, then it comes down to the kids," offered Hislop, who has been at the helm for the Pirates for more than two decades. "The neat thing in A girls and boys this year is that there’s not too many teams that are super deep. But boy there’s some nice players. It will be fun to see how it shakes out."

***

Western Montana's best bet to take top honors in State A girls' singles is senior Emily Getts of Columbia Falls. She reached the semifinals last year before losing in straight sets to Fagg.

"She's been working on her game and it's looking good already," Wildkats coach Gene Marcille said. "This year she is going to get a little more help from our kids who were last year kind of younger. We should have a pretty solid team because most of our girls are back."

Joining Getts on the list of solid singles players for Columbia Falls is junior Molly Schmidt. In doubles, Marcille is looking for big things from senior Sydney Grilley and junior Morgan Stenger.

"Emily was our only girl at state last year and she did pretty well on her own, score-wise," Marcille noted. "This year we hope to give her some help."

The Corvallis girls have rebuilding to do after taking bronze in State A team competition last year. Junior Emma Pickett and senior Rebecca Weidkamp have stood out in practice along with sophomores Emily Thomas and Olivia Fehr.

"Quite a few of the players we have coming back are sophomores," Blue Devils veteran coach Mike Fehr said. " A lot of these players played all summer and have been playing indoors this winter, so I’m happy with what I'm seeing."

***

Topping the list of State A boys' players with championship potential are Hamilton sophomore Alex Raymond and last year's state runner-up, Jeff Miller of Havre. Raymond reached the state singles semifinals last year before losing to Miller.

In doubles, Polson has a state-tested team in Quaid Harlan and Colin Kenney. They won their first-round match at state last year.

"Our boys team is salty on top but there’s no depth," Hislop said. "We've got three state returners, including Harlan, Kenney and Cadis Chowning. And Matt Sitter will help us.

"Whitefish will probably win our (Northwestern) division with the depth they have. Havre is probably one of the teams to beat at state and Glendive could be in mix."

A change in divisional alignment will affect all of western Montana's Class A teams. Stevensville is now in with Polson, Whitefish and Columbia Falls while the Southwestern division includes Corvallis, Hamilton, Dillon and Butte Central.

The Corvallis boys, like the girls, are rebuilding after taking silver at state last season. Blue Devils veteran coach Chris Maul-Smith will build around returning state doubles player Caleb Powell and fellow veterans Josh Smith, Gabe DeLeo and Easton Powell.

"We’ve got a bunch of very enthusiastic guys that are athletic," Maul-Smith said. "We’re going to be developing a lot of new players as well as having some experience from last year."

Belgrade tennis to host Hawks’ JV in opener

Panthers have another big turnout; will just 3 home tournaments

Year two of Belgrade High School’s tennis program begins Tuesday afternoon with the first of just three home appearances this season.

The Panthers will host Class AA Bozeman’s JV at the Marcia Anderson Tennis Complex in the Belgrade Youth Sports complex at 3 p.m.

“It’s Bozeman JV. Last year we had no expectations,” second-year Belgrade coach Aaron Yost noted. “I would expect for us to compete in a lot of different matches, boys and girls.”

Belgrade fielded very young and inexperienced squads, both boys and girls, last year and did not qualify a player for the state tournament. But Yost noted many of the returners worked very hard in the off-season to improve their skills.

“In terms of growth, we’re going to be on totally different level this year, which is exciting,” he said. “A lot of kids played — guys in particular — played over the winter up at MSU (Montana State University), and that will certainly pay dividends.”

Belgrade’s coaching staff, which includes assistant Nettie Dayhuff, had yet to set the roster through the first week of try-outs due to limited time outdoors. Among the more than 40 athletes who tried out were the boys’ top two singles players from a year ago in Trey Layman and Jeffrey Fournier.

On the girls’ side, Laura Stout was at try-outs after competing as the team’s No. 1 singles player last year. Other returners included Hunter Bos, Kiah Hohenstein, and Lilly Reddick.

With a year under their belt, Yost is expecting a much improved team. He also noted the coaching staff has set up practices for more one-on-one drills.

“I think this year we’ll be able to focus on a lot more individual work, and work to improve individual players in ways that I don’t feel we got to do last year,” Yost said. “So we’re really looking forward to that.”

Belgrade’s other two home tournaments will be April 15 against Butte Central, and on April 30 against Park County High. The Central A Divisional is May 19-20 in Lewistown.

Maroons open tennis season big in numbers

By Bill Foley

Butte Central tennis coach Becky Hancock had a hard time believing the interest in her program this spring.

With 21 boys and 15 girls out for the team, Hancock finds herself with a good kind of problem heading into her second hear at the helm of the Maroons. Hancock must find a way to get court time for all of her players.

The Maroons open the season at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hamilton.

“I had great turnout,” Hancock said. “I have some really great athletic kids, and we have some depth. It is exciting for the tennis program.”

With limited opportunities for matches, Hancock said that depth will translate into competitive practices that will shape the team for the divisional tournament.

The Maroons, who have seven senior boys and seven senior girls, boast a roster with names known well by fans of other BC sports.

Experienced doubles players Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn, a pair of seniors, lead the BC girls into action. Last year, the duo reached the semifinals of the divisional tournament.

Also playing doubles for the BC girls will be junior Larysa Blavatsky and sophomore Samantha Burton and seniors Ryan Trudnowski and Sierra Pica.

Down the road, freshman Tricia Joyce and junior Emily St. John could play doubles, Hancock said. For now, they will play singles, however.

St. John joins the tennis team after playing softball for two years. Hancock said the standout basketball and volleyball player is coming along nicely on the court.

“She’s picking it up very quickly,” the coach said.

Senior Sarah Drew is back to lead the singles players for the Maroons. Sophomore Zoe Sullivan will slide into the No. 2 singles slot, just ahead of Joyce and St. John.

Other BC girls looking to get into the mix are seniors Megan McPherson and Regan Weldon; sophomore Savannah Healy and freshmen Shea Davis and Prestynn Weldon.

Seniors Sam Joyce and Jake McPherson will lead the BC singles players on the boys’ side. Which player is No. 1 could change from week to week.

The next two singles spots will likely be manned by junior Bryan Arnold, sophomore Tash Lester or freshman Seth Gardner.

Senior Sam Sterns and sophomore Cameron Johnson will represent the Maroons in the No. 1 doubles slot. Sophomores Colby Kline and Shane Callahan will play No. 2 doubles, while freshman Aidan Petritz and junior Sam Johnston will play No. 3.

Sophomore Tyge Yelenich, who had a strong freshman season in singles, will likely play doubles with new-coming senior Cal Hollow. That team, though, won’t play this weekend because Hollow doesn’t have enough practices.

Other BC boys looking for court time are seniors Yihuan Gao, Zach Luebeck and Tyler Kukmp; juniors Ian Campbell and Jeonghoon Lim; sophomores Noah McGree and Colter Stillwagon; and freshman Kaden Sehulster.

“There’s an athletic group on both sides,” Hancock said. “That’s a lot to work with, and it makes for great competition for practice.”

Once again, Clarissa Stajcar will assist Hancock.

The Maroons will play the first of four scheduled home meets on Saturday, April 9 when they play Livingston and Anaconda in Butte and Anaconda.

The divisional tournament will be held May 19-21 in Hamilton and Corvallis. The Class A State tournament will be May 26-27 in Bozeman and Livingston.

Blue Pony netters get off to a warm start

March 29, 2016

Havre senior Meggan Smith placed fourth in girls singles at last Saturday's Cut Bank Invitational. The season-opening tournament was a big success for the Blue Ponies.

No matter the scores, or the level of competition, it was a successful start to the 2016 Havre High tennis season. And it was mainly because, even though it's still March, the Blue Ponies played, and they played a lot.

The Havre boys and girls got plenty of time on the courts on a rare, mild day in Cut Bank, as the Ponies took part in the Cut Bank Invitational last Saturday.

"This early in the year, or really, all spring long, your first hope is just to get outside and get on the court," said HHS head coach George Ferguson. "And we were able to do that on Saturday. It was a nice day in Cut Bank, and we played a lot of tennis. So really, we couldn't have gotten the season started any better."

As for the matches, Havre also won plenty of them, against the likes of Cut Bank, Conrad and Central A rival Lewistown.

The Pony boys got a singles championship from senior Jeff Miller, who beat teammate Dustin Haas in the championship match. Meanwhile, the doubles duo of Jake Sedahl and Trey Hanson won the doubles crown, while Nate Korb and Kennedy McKay finished third.

"Our older kids were pretty sharp," Ferguson said. "I saw a lot of positives out of our returning boys. There was certainly some match rust, but overall, for our first matches of the year, I saw a lot of good things. But more importantly, we also were better able to define exactly what we need to work on going forward."

The Ponies also got a second-place finish from freshman Tommy Brown in the No. 3's singles bracket, and overall, Havre took a lot of young players to the tournament. On the girls side, the Ponies had four first-time players in their lineup, and all of them, Marcee Murphy, Katie Donaldson, Dakota Acor and Caprice Gobin won at least one match their first time out. Acor wound up placing third in the No. 3's bracket.

"We took a lot of kids who were getting their first taste of high school tennis," Ferguson said. "And that's so much fun. It's fun to watch them learn, watch them kind of figure things out as the day goes on. And all of those kids got to play a lot, so it was a really valuable day for them."

Havre's varsity girls also got plenty of time on the court in Cut Bank. The senior duo of Reggie Bernard and Alara Vogel placed second in doubles, while Rainey Stoner and Madison Huebsch finished third. Havre also got a fourth-place finish by senior Meggan Smith in singles.

"I thought our varsity girls did a really good job," Ferguson said. "The other teams were short-handed on the girls side, so a lot of our kids ended up playing each other. But, the most important thing was just to play, to get the rust off and gain match experience, and all of our girls did a great job of doing that, of taking advantage of just being out there and getting to play again."

And at the end of the day, playing was the most important thing for the Blue Ponies, who will next travel to Conrad this Saturday, where they'll see basically the same competition, only in a dual format.

"We learned a lot on Saturday," Ferguson said. "We got started, and now we have a reference for what needs to happen next. So, all the kids did great, and we'll go back to work this week, sticking with the basics and fundamentals. And then in Conrad, we'll really see how quickly we're improving because the kids will play a lot of the same kids they did in Cut Bank. And improving every day, every weekend, that's our main goal right now."
