Cubs beat Brewers 12-7 and advance to the winner bracket final
Joe Del Valle did it with the bat and his arm carrying the Cubs to their opening round win over the Brewers. Del Valle pitched a complete game and had the game well in hand before giving up four runs in the top of the seventh inning. He also helped himself at the plate going 3 for 4 with two doubles and five RBI's. Tim Sprinstroh and Tim Armenta both drove in a pair runs and the rest of the Cubs lineup chipped in with timely hits throughout the game.
The Cubs advance to the Winners bracket final on Sunday @ 10:00 vs the winner of the Space Coast Pirates and last year's league champs the Palm Bay Americans at Eau Gallie High.
Cubs Win Wild Affair 17-13 in eight innings!
The Cubs quickly answered again in the top of the second with three more runs. Tim Armenta & Doug Mays both hit doubles to highlight the inning and the Cubs went up by a score of 6-4.
The Pirates scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning off relief pitcher Tim Armenta to tie the game at 6-6.
Dick Spalding pitched a scoreless fourth inning and Ernie Bianco came in and relieved Spalding in bottom of the fifth inning with the game tied 6-6. But, Bianco gave up a home run that put the Pirates in the lead 7-6. The Cubbies came back again, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead briefly at 8-7. Bianco then got in some trouble in the bottom of the inning and in came Tony Burnham. The Pirates put up six runs on four hits and Cubs miscues and led 13-8.
After a thirty minute light delay, the game resumed with the Cubs trailing 13-8 and looking to lose for only the second time in eleven games. But, the Cubs scratched their way back scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 13-13. The big blow came when Mike Ramos ripped a double into the right centerfield gap and cleared the bases. Ramos later scored on a pass ball to tie the game.
The Cubs went into extra innings for the first time this season and proved why they are the hottest team on the Space Coast. Tom Lombardo reached on a fielder’s choice and Don Ingram singled up the middle to start the inning off. Then the Cubs one two punch of Doug Mays and Ernie Bianco hit back to back doubles to account for three of the Cubbies runs in the inning. Chuck Woodall would hit a sacrifice fly to score Ernie Bianco to cap off the scoring and put the Cubbies up 17-13.
Tony Burnham pitched three innings including a scoreless eighth to earn his second victory of the season on the mound for the Cubs.

Del Valle, Woodall back lineup and Spark Cubs to 5-4 win!
Del Valle pitched six strong innings in his return to the pitching rotation but was unable to get the decision. Dick Spalding relieved Del Valle in the seventh inning and gave up leadoff game tying homerun. Tony Burnham then entered the game for the Cubs with two outs and runners on first and second. Burnham never threw a pitch for he picked off the runner on second base to end the inning. "That has to be the most bizarre way to get a win as a pitcher," said interim coach/shortstop Ernie Bianco. "He never threw a pitch, unbelievable!"
In the bottom of the seventh, Chuck Woodall hit a one out double and went to third on a pass ball. Tim Springstroh came to the plate and drove in the winning run with a walk-off RBI single. Chuck Woodall and Tim Springstroh combined for 4 for 6 and three RBI's to pace the Cubs offense.
The Cubs improve to 10-5 in the Space Coast baseball standings. The Cubs play their last game of the regular season Friday night vs Pirates at Flutie Field @ 7:00.
Cubs in control of their own destiny

Cubs beat Pirates in Sloppy affair 15-11
The big spark came in the third inning when the Pirates went up on the Cubbies 7-4. Charlie Terryn led the inning off with a line drive single and Tom Lombardo fought off a two-strike count for a single. Then Ernie Bianco whose bat has suffered some since taken over the number two spot in the pitching rotation. Roped a single down the leftfield line driving in two runs. Bianco went one for three in the game with three RBI’s and scored twice. The Pirates went up again by a score of 11-8 in the top of the fourth. The Cubs answered again in the bottom of the inning with eight runs, highlighted by Brian Donlon’s two run home run. Donlon finished the night at the plate going one for three, three RBI’s and a home run to tie him for the team lead with four.
Doug Mays pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Mark Cronan who has struggled with arm problems this season. This was the second appearance for Mays this season, but by far his longest outing. Doug might have thrown himself in the pitching rotation when we start the playoffs in two weeks, said second baseman and assistant coach Ernie Bianco. Mays also went two for three at the plate and raised his team leading batting average to .516.
The Cubs play the Pirates again at Flutie Field Friday @ 7:00.
Bianco Pitches Gem, Cubbies Split with Brewers
In the first game. Cubs pitcher Tony Burnham was cruising along, when things fell apart in the fourth inning. After the first out, the Cubs defense committed two errors and the Brewers made them pay with a clutch two out double with the bases loaded which scored two runs. The Brewers scored six runs in the inning and the Cubs never recovered. Brian Donlon was the only bright spot for the Cubs with a double that hit high off the centerfield wall in the second inning. Tony Burnham was the losing pitcher for the Cubs and Joe Mattingly recorded the win for the Brewers.
The Cubbies bounced back in the second game behind the pitching of Ernie Bianco. Bianco pitched a complete game for the Cubs giving up one run on six hits, striking out four and walking only one. Bianco improved his record to 4-1 on the hill and the Cubs improved to 8-5. “The defense played a fantastic game behind me and it allowed me to keep my pitch count down throughout the game, said Bianco.”
The Cubs offense came to life in the six inning when Tony Burnham decided to get his bat in the game. Burnham led the inning off with a solo home run that just cleared the leftfield wall and put the Cubs up 2-1. Still in the fourth, Charlie Terryn and Tim Armenta both walked with one out. Tim Springstroh and Ernie Bianco both singled and drove in runs and Springstroh scored on a pass ball to increase the Cubs lead to 5-1.
The offense was led by several Cubbies;
Tim Springstroh ---- (3-4, 2-2B, 2 R, 1 RBI)
Tony Burnham ---- (2-4, HR, 1 RBI)
Ernie Bianco ---- (2-4, 2 RBI)
Brian Donlon ---- (2-4, 2B)
Bob Robidoux ---- (1-4, 2 SB)

Cubs Win Fourth Straight Behind Del Valle's Three Hitter
Scauzillo's Grand Slam and Woodall's walk-off RBI single lead Cubs
Kevin Scauzillo led the Cubs offense going three for four, which included a Grand Slam and six RBI’s.
The Cubs did most of their damage in the third inning by scoring seven runs. The inning was highlight by Charlie Terryn’s lead off single to get things started and Scauzillo’s Grand Slam. Mark Cronan started the game on the mound for the Cubs going two and one third innings. Cronan was relieved by Ernie Bianco who pitched four and two thirds innings for the victory. “I thought Mark and I had pretty good stuff tonight, but the mound was in awful condition and the Astros were making us pay for our mistakes, said Bianco. I thought the Astros hitters had a good approach at the plate against us and it took an inning or two to make adjustments.”
The Cubs were not short on help at the plate on this night. Besides the monster night by Scauzillo, Chuck Woodall and Ernie Bianco chipped in with two hits and two RBI’s a piece. “It seems like it’s somebody new every game stepping up with big hits. The first three or four games, it was Doug Mays and Brian Donlon. The last few games have been Chuck Woodall, Charlie Terryn, Joe Del Valle and Dick Spalding. I can’t wait to see when the other guys heat up and we’re clicking on all cylinders said Bianco.”
The Cubs finish out their series with the Astros on Sunday at the FIT campus field @ 10:00.
Cubs Win Impressive over the Americans 8-2
Cubs Win on Father's Day!
Cubs Split Doubleheader against Astros
In the second game, the Cubs lose 15-13. The Cubs jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to see it vanish. The Astros capitalized on what is the Achilles heal of the Cubs, THE PITCHING. The Astros scored nine runs in the bottom of second on a series of walks and hits putting the Cubs behind 9-4. But again the Cubs came bouncing back in the top of the fourth. Leading the way was 6’ 10” rookie Brian Donlon clubbing a grand slam to put the Cubs up 11-9. But, the Astros came back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs. The Astros then scored three runs on a base hit and a sacrifice fly when Ernie Bianco came in to relieve Brian Donlon who walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth. “I made a good pitch with two strikes, he just hit it and the infield was playing in. I think if we were playing back we would of got at least one out and maybe a double play. I didn’t have a whole lot left in the tank at that point to throw it by anybody, Bianco said.”
The Cubs out hit the Astros 19-10 in the game and still lost proving pitching does make a difference. Chuck Woodall and Doug Mays both had four hits a piece for the Cubs. Ernie Bianco and Brian Donlon had three hits and chipping in with two hits were Rich Martinson and Bob Robidoux.
Through five games, the Cubbies have hit eight homeruns, already one better than last season’s entire total of seven.
Leading the way for the Cubs is Doug Mays who is hitting a blistering .687 (11 for 16) with four homeruns and a gaudy 1.437 slugging percentage. Chuck Woodall is leading the team with a .714 batting average (5 for 7) and rookie sensation Brian Donlon is batting .500 (6 for 12) with two homeruns and a team leading nine RBI’s. Also steady in the lineup are Ernie Bianco (.421, 3 RBI’s), Nate Terryn (.364, 5 RBI’s) & Rich Martinson (.333, 3 RBI’s & 1 HR).
Americans take two from the Cubs
In the second game. The Cubs won the homerun battle 3-2 with Doug Mays, Kevin Scauzillo and Brian Donlon all hitting solo homeruns. However, the Americans out outscored the Cubs 20-10 and out hit the Cubs 16-11 in another impressive offensive outing led by Jose Soto and Tracey Biggs homeruns. The Cubs drop to 0-3 on the season and the Americans improved to 3-0. Brian “Gator” Horan earns his first win of the season while Bob Willcox took the loss for the Cubbies. “Our pitching staff has taken a big hit in recent weeks said coach Don Ingram. We lost veteran pitcher Lenny Stahley for the season due to personal reasons. Then we lost rookie sensation Dennis Rodriguez who moved back to Miami for medical reasons. Johnnie Foster is holding out to restructure his contract and Bob Willcox came up lame in the second game today!” The Cubs still have roster spots open and are hoping they can find some pitching before they get to deep into the season. On a positive note, the Cubs offense has picked up with Shortstop Doug Mays leading the way with a .625 bating average and belting two homeruns. Next game is Sunday at 10:00 vs. the Space Coast Astros (DH) at Rock-Park.

"Fourteen players show on first day of practice"
Fourteen of the seventeen players on the Rockledge "Bizzarro’s Pizza" Cubs roster reported to the team's first Mandatory practice. It was business as usual for the Cubs, as their fearless leader Don "Ironman" Ingram conducted a very productive first practice. Some early arrivals this Spring were the 2006 Team MVP Tim Springstroh, 2006 David "Catfish" Ingram award winner Ernie Bianco, Gold Glove center fielder Bob Robidoux and Iconic figures Dick Spalding and Charlie Terryn. The club looks to get off to a fast start this season with the return of FULL-TIME status players Chuck Woodall and Doug Mays who should add much needed pop in the middle of the Cubbies line-up. The Cubs also added two rookie pitchers Bryan Donlon and Dennis Rodriguez who will add much needed depth to the pitching staff. The rest of the returning Cubbie players include Tim Armenta, Tom Lombardo, Nate Terryn, and Mike Ramos all looking to add depth to the 2007 Cubs. The team reported three No shows, Lenny Stahley, Jeff Marr and Mark Cronan who are expected in camp on April 29th. Keep posted to the website for up to date reports around the league and in Cubbie camp.........
Good luck in 2007 Cubbies!
