August 10, 2007
The Rockledge Cubs made a statement Friday night under the lights at Rockledge Park. The Cubs beat the Brevard Brewers 12-7 in convincing fashion.

Joe Del Valle did it with the bat and his arm carrying the Cubs to their opening round win over the Brewers. Del Valle pitched a complete game and had the game well in hand before giving up four runs in the top of the seventh inning. He also helped himself at the plate going 3 for 4 with two doubles and five RBI's. Tim Sprinstroh and Tim Armenta both drove in a pair runs and the rest of the Cubs lineup chipped in with timely hits throughout the game.

The Cubs advance to the Winners bracket final on Sunday @ 10:00 vs the winner of the Space Coast Pirates and last year's league champs the Palm Bay Americans at Eau Gallie High.

Cubs Win Wild Affair 17-13 in eight innings!

August 4, 2007
The Rockledge Cubs ended their regular season with an eight inning 17-13 win against the Space Coast Pirates. The Cubs came into the game with a 10-5 record and looking to improve to 11-5 overall. The Space Coast Pirates had other ideas as this game turned into a thriller. The Cubs scored three runs in the top of the first, highlighted by Brian Donlon’s (team leading) fifth home run of the season. The Pirates answered the Cubs with four runs in the bottom of the first against Tim Sprinstroh, who was making only his third appearance of the season.

The Cubs quickly answered again in the top of the second with three more runs. Tim Armenta & Doug Mays both hit doubles to highlight the inning and the Cubs went up by a score of 6-4.
The Pirates scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning off relief pitcher Tim Armenta to tie the game at 6-6.

Dick Spalding pitched a scoreless fourth inning and Ernie Bianco came in and relieved Spalding in bottom of the fifth inning with the game tied 6-6. But, Bianco gave up a home run that put the Pirates in the lead 7-6. The Cubbies came back again, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead briefly at 8-7. Bianco then got in some trouble in the bottom of the inning and in came Tony Burnham. The Pirates put up six runs on four hits and Cubs miscues and led 13-8.

After a thirty minute light delay, the game resumed with the Cubs trailing 13-8 and looking to lose for only the second time in eleven games. But, the Cubs scratched their way back scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 13-13. The big blow came when Mike Ramos ripped a double into the right centerfield gap and cleared the bases. Ramos later scored on a pass ball to tie the game.

The Cubs went into extra innings for the first time this season and proved why they are the hottest team on the Space Coast. Tom Lombardo reached on a fielder’s choice and Don Ingram singled up the middle to start the inning off. Then the Cubs one two punch of Doug Mays and Ernie Bianco hit back to back doubles to account for three of the Cubbies runs in the inning. Chuck Woodall would hit a sacrifice fly to score Ernie Bianco to cap off the scoring and put the Cubbies up 17-13.
Tony Burnham pitched three innings including a scoreless eighth to earn his second victory of the season on the mound for the Cubs.

Del Valle, Woodall back lineup and Spark Cubs to 5-4 win!

July 29, 2007
Chuck Woodall and Joe Del Valle back in the lineup after a two week layoff, spark the Cubs to 5-4 victory over the Brevard Brewers.

Del Valle pitched six strong innings in his return to the pitching rotation but was unable to get the decision. Dick Spalding relieved Del Valle in the seventh inning and gave up leadoff game tying homerun. Tony Burnham then entered the game for the Cubs with two outs and runners on first and second. Burnham never threw a pitch for he picked off the runner on second base to end the inning. "That has to be the most bizarre way to get a win as a pitcher," said interim coach/shortstop Ernie Bianco. "He never threw a pitch, unbelievable!"

In the bottom of the seventh, Chuck Woodall hit a one out double and went to third on a pass ball. Tim Springstroh came to the plate and drove in the winning run with a walk-off RBI single. Chuck Woodall and Tim Springstroh combined for 4 for 6 and three RBI's to pace the Cubs offense.

The Cubs improve to 10-5 in the Space Coast baseball standings. The Cubs play their last game of the regular season Friday night vs Pirates at Flutie Field @ 7:00.

Cubs beat Pirates in Sloppy affair 15-11

July 25, 2007
The Rockledge Cubs despite eight errors and falling behind to the Space Coast Pirates showed the resilience of a team on a mission. The Cubs answered the Pirates offense attacks with it’s own offense barrage. Tim Springstroh, who started the first half of the season with a batting average under .200, continued his torrid hitting as of late. Springstroh seems to be back to his 2006 MVP form, hit two doubles (team high 6) and drove in two runs to spark the Cubs offense.

The big spark came in the third inning when the Pirates went up on the Cubbies 7-4. Charlie Terryn led the inning off with a line drive single and Tom Lombardo fought off a two-strike count for a single. Then Ernie Bianco whose bat has suffered some since taken over the number two spot in the pitching rotation. Roped a single down the leftfield line driving in two runs. Bianco went one for three in the game with three RBI’s and scored twice. The Pirates went up again by a score of 11-8 in the top of the fourth. The Cubs answered again in the bottom of the inning with eight runs, highlighted by Brian Donlon’s two run home run. Donlon finished the night at the plate going one for three, three RBI’s and a home run to tie him for the team lead with four.

Doug Mays pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Mark Cronan who has struggled with arm problems this season. This was the second appearance for Mays this season, but by far his longest outing. Doug might have thrown himself in the pitching rotation when we start the playoffs in two weeks, said second baseman and assistant coach Ernie Bianco. Mays also went two for three at the plate and raised his team leading batting average to .516.

The Cubs play the Pirates again at Flutie Field Friday @ 7:00.

Bianco Pitches Gem, Cubbies Split with Brewers

July 22, 2007
The Cubs split with the Brevard Brewers losing the first game 8-1 and winning the second game 5-1.
In the first game. Cubs pitcher Tony Burnham was cruising along, when things fell apart in the fourth inning. After the first out, the Cubs defense committed two errors and the Brewers made them pay with a clutch two out double with the bases loaded which scored two runs. The Brewers scored six runs in the inning and the Cubs never recovered. Brian Donlon was the only bright spot for the Cubs with a double that hit high off the centerfield wall in the second inning. Tony Burnham was the losing pitcher for the Cubs and Joe Mattingly recorded the win for the Brewers.

The Cubbies bounced back in the second game behind the pitching of Ernie Bianco. Bianco pitched a complete game for the Cubs giving up one run on six hits, striking out four and walking only one. Bianco improved his record to 4-1 on the hill and the Cubs improved to 8-5. “The defense played a fantastic game behind me and it allowed me to keep my pitch count down throughout the game, said Bianco.”
The Cubs offense came to life in the six inning when Tony Burnham decided to get his bat in the game. Burnham led the inning off with a solo home run that just cleared the leftfield wall and put the Cubs up 2-1. Still in the fourth, Charlie Terryn and Tim Armenta both walked with one out. Tim Springstroh and Ernie Bianco both singled and drove in runs and Springstroh scored on a pass ball to increase the Cubs lead to 5-1.

The offense was led by several Cubbies;

Tim Springstroh ---- (3-4, 2-2B, 2 R, 1 RBI)
Tony Burnham ---- (2-4, HR, 1 RBI)
Ernie Bianco ---- (2-4, 2 RBI)
Brian Donlon ---- (2-4, 2B)
Bob Robidoux ---- (1-4, 2 SB)

The Cubs are one game up in second place in the Space Coast baseball standings ahead of the third place Brevard Brewers. The next game is Wednesday at Rock-Park vs Pirates @ 7:00.

Cubs Win Sixth Straight Game, by forfeit

July 18, 2007
The Cubs win their seventh game of the season by a forfeit over the Space Coast Pirates. The Cubs next game is a doubleheader Sunday against the Brevard Brewers at Rock-Park, game time 10:00.

Cubs Win Fourth Straight Behind Del Valle's Three Hitter

July 1, 2007
Joe Del Valle pitched six innings giving up only three hits and no runs to lead the Cubs to a 6-1 victory. Tony Burnham pitched the seventh inning giving up one run on a walk and hit to close the game for the Cubs. The Cubs pushed across two runs in the early innings, but Doug Mays' three run double in the top of the seventh sealed the game for the Cubs.

Scauzillo's Grand Slam and Woodall's walk-off RBI single lead Cubs

June 27, 2007 – 01:00 AM
The Rockledge Cubs earned their third victory in a row beating the Space Coast Astros 13-12. The game was won by a walk off RBI single by Chuck Woodall to score Bob Robidoux in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cubs offense has been heating up lately as well as their pitching. Although the pitching had it’s peaks and valleys Wednesday night, the offense carried the Cubbies to their fourth victory of the season.
Kevin Scauzillo led the Cubs offense going three for four, which included a Grand Slam and six RBI’s.

The Cubs did most of their damage in the third inning by scoring seven runs. The inning was highlight by Charlie Terryn’s lead off single to get things started and Scauzillo’s Grand Slam. Mark Cronan started the game on the mound for the Cubs going two and one third innings. Cronan was relieved by Ernie Bianco who pitched four and two thirds innings for the victory. “I thought Mark and I had pretty good stuff tonight, but the mound was in awful condition and the Astros were making us pay for our mistakes, said Bianco. I thought the Astros hitters had a good approach at the plate against us and it took an inning or two to make adjustments.”

The Cubs were not short on help at the plate on this night. Besides the monster night by Scauzillo, Chuck Woodall and Ernie Bianco chipped in with two hits and two RBI’s a piece. “It seems like it’s somebody new every game stepping up with big hits. The first three or four games, it was Doug Mays and Brian Donlon. The last few games have been Chuck Woodall, Charlie Terryn, Joe Del Valle and Dick Spalding. I can’t wait to see when the other guys heat up and we’re clicking on all cylinders said Bianco.”

The Cubs finish out their series with the Astros on Sunday at the FIT campus field @ 10:00.

Cubs Win Impressive over the Americans 8-2

June 24, 2007
The Cubs posted their second win in a row and their third win in four games beating the Palm Bay Americans 8-2. The Cubs received another solid performance from their Orlando affiliate Joe Del Valle. Del Valle pitched four innings, giving up three hits and surrendered only two runs against the Americans. The Cubs got started early with Doug Mays setting the tone with a lead off double. Ernie Bianco reached first on an error, then Chuck Woodall doubled in a run and moved Bianco to third. Tim Springstroh broke out of early season slump with a double to drive in two runs. Brian Donlon was hit by a pitch and Kevin Scauzillo singled to drive in Springstroh. Donlon then scored on a Sacrifice fly by Bob Robidoux to put the Cubs up by a score of 5-0. The Cubs added another run in the second inning to go up 6-0 and it stayed that way until the top of the fourth inning. The Americans managed to scrap their way back into the game, scoring two runs off of walks and timely hitting. But, Del Valle wasn’t going to have any of that. After Tony Burnhm double to lead off the fifth inning, Del Valle helped his own cause hitting a two run home run off of Americans reliever Otis Chism to put the Cubs up 8-2. Dick Spalding came in to relieve Del Valle in the fifth and pitched two innings of scoreless baseball before he gave way to the Cubs new closer Tony Burnahm.

Cubs Win on Father's Day!

June 17, 2007
The Rockledge Cubs received a nice Father’s Day gift on Sunday, a 6-1 win against the Brevard Brewers and their ace pitcher and last year’s league MVP John Hrvsovsky. It look like the same old Cubbies when newly acquired pitcher Joe DeValle game up a lead off double on the first pitch of the game. But, the Cubs got out what could have been a big inning for the Brewers only trailing 1-0. In the second inning, the cubs got a little luck on their side for once. Rich Martinson led the inning off with a walk followed by a Nate Terryn single. Martinson scored on a pass ball and with two outs Terryn scored on a pass ball as well putting the Cubs up 2-1. The score remained 2-1 until the fifth inning, when Ernie Bianco got things started with a lined drive single down the left field line with two outs. Chuck Woodall then hit a ground ball at the Brewers second baseman. Bianco was heading to second base and it distracted the second baseman just enough and the ball went under his glove. Bianco took advantage of the error and headed to third base. Hrvsovsky then walked Martinson to load the bases. Nate Terryn came to the plate and walked to score a run. Hrvsovsky then balked in another run and the Cubs went up 4-1. The Brewers Hrvsovsky was replace in the sixth inning. The Cubs took advantage of the move and scored two runs on an error and a RBI single from pitcher Joe DeValle. Another newly acquired pitcher, Tony Burnham replaced DeValle and closed out the seventh inning striking out two out of three batters. Joe DeValle earned the win on the hill with a three hit, one earn run performance and Ernie Bianco went two for four at the plate to lead the Cubs to their second win of the season.

Cubs Split Doubleheader against Astros

June 10, 2007
It’s official, the Cubs’ bats have come out of hibernation winning the first game of the twin bill 10-9 against the Space Coast Astros. The Cubs showed signs last week that they are a very potent offensive team. However, that was all lost in the 20-10 loss against league rivals the Palm Bay Americans. But, the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday showed that the Cubbies are resilient as they battled back and forth against the Astros. Doug Mays & Rich Martinson both hit homeruns and Brian Donlon had a clutch bases loaded double that clear bases and Mike Ramos chipped in with two hits to lead the way for the Cubs. Ernie Bianco pitched two scoreless innings in relief to record the win on the mound. Mike Knoche (2) and James Hodges both hit homeruns to lead the Astros.

In the second game, the Cubs lose 15-13. The Cubs jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to see it vanish. The Astros capitalized on what is the Achilles heal of the Cubs, THE PITCHING. The Astros scored nine runs in the bottom of second on a series of walks and hits putting the Cubs behind 9-4. But again the Cubs came bouncing back in the top of the fourth. Leading the way was 6’ 10” rookie Brian Donlon clubbing a grand slam to put the Cubs up 11-9. But, the Astros came back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs. The Astros then scored three runs on a base hit and a sacrifice fly when Ernie Bianco came in to relieve Brian Donlon who walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth. “I made a good pitch with two strikes, he just hit it and the infield was playing in. I think if we were playing back we would of got at least one out and maybe a double play. I didn’t have a whole lot left in the tank at that point to throw it by anybody, Bianco said.”
The Cubs out hit the Astros 19-10 in the game and still lost proving pitching does make a difference. Chuck Woodall and Doug Mays both had four hits a piece for the Cubs. Ernie Bianco and Brian Donlon had three hits and chipping in with two hits were Rich Martinson and Bob Robidoux.

Through five games, the Cubbies have hit eight homeruns, already one better than last season’s entire total of seven.
Leading the way for the Cubs is Doug Mays who is hitting a blistering .687 (11 for 16) with four homeruns and a gaudy 1.437 slugging percentage. Chuck Woodall is leading the team with a .714 batting average (5 for 7) and rookie sensation Brian Donlon is batting .500 (6 for 12) with two homeruns and a team leading nine RBI’s. Also steady in the lineup are Ernie Bianco (.421, 3 RBI’s), Nate Terryn (.364, 5 RBI’s) & Rich Martinson (.333, 3 RBI’s & 1 HR).

Americans take two from the Cubs

June 3, 2007
Sunday’s doubleheader between the Palm Bay Americans and the Rockledge Cubs seen how explosive the Americans offense can be this season… In the morning game, Artie Shricker took the mound for the Americans and Ernie Bianco for the Cubs. The Americans took an early lead going up 2-0, but the third inning finally seen the Cubs lineup finally come to life. Brian Donlon drew a walk and then Don Ingram lined a double into right center field that scored Donlon. Doug Mays then singled and then stole second base. Ernie Bianco came up and lined a single down the right field line driving in two more runs to put the Cubs up 3-2. Bianco ran into a little trouble in the fifth inning. With one out and a man on first. Bianco snagged a ground ball back up the middle, which looked like an easy inning ending double play. Bianco instead air mailed his throw into center field putting runners on the corners with one out for the Americans. Bianco struck out the next batter, and then walked the bases loaded. He then faced Mike Stevanus striking him out to end the inning and holding on to the Cubs 3-2 lead. The Cubs scored another run in the fifth inning, giving them a two run cushion at 4-2. The pitching duel turned into a slugfest and the wheels fell off the wagon for the Cubs. Bianco over the hundred and twenty pitch mark faced the heart of the Americans lineup. Jose Soto and Dacks Rodriguez led the inning off with back-to-back solo homeruns to tie the score at 4-4. Bianco then walk the next two batters and was pulled from the game. The Americans batted around in the inning scoring eleven runs highlighted by Jose Soto’s two homeruns. Doug Mays added a homerun in the bottom of the seventh off of reliever Ron Farnham to close the gap to 13-5. But it wasn’t enough to stop the Americans from winning their 1200th game in franchise history. Artie Shricker earn the victory for the Americans and Ernie Bianco took the loss.

In the second game. The Cubs won the homerun battle 3-2 with Doug Mays, Kevin Scauzillo and Brian Donlon all hitting solo homeruns. However, the Americans out outscored the Cubs 20-10 and out hit the Cubs 16-11 in another impressive offensive outing led by Jose Soto and Tracey Biggs homeruns. The Cubs drop to 0-3 on the season and the Americans improved to 3-0. Brian “Gator” Horan earns his first win of the season while Bob Willcox took the loss for the Cubbies. “Our pitching staff has taken a big hit in recent weeks said coach Don Ingram. We lost veteran pitcher Lenny Stahley for the season due to personal reasons. Then we lost rookie sensation Dennis Rodriguez who moved back to Miami for medical reasons. Johnnie Foster is holding out to restructure his contract and Bob Willcox came up lame in the second game today!” The Cubs still have roster spots open and are hoping they can find some pitching before they get to deep into the season. On a positive note, the Cubs offense has picked up with Shortstop Doug Mays leading the way with a .625 bating average and belting two homeruns. Next game is Sunday at 10:00 vs. the Space Coast Astros (DH) at Rock-Park.
