All,
With the new state guidance, extending the "stay at home" orders through mid May, the executive council for the League has determined that the 2020 Spring Lacrosse season is no longer feasible.
Effective Immediately we are CANCELLING the season with no plans or intent to reconsider, regardless of any future changes in guidance.
The league will be maintaining all monies paid as a credit towards next season fee's/dues. If any club is in dire need of these funds they can contact the league and we can discuss on a case by case basis.
We did not come to this decision lightly - we consulted continually with local clubs, our executive council, US Lacrosse as well as numerous other leagues up and down the East Coast, many of whom have followed suit and cancelled their own season.
As a league we have been coordinating with existing summer and fall programs to work with them to get information out to the clubs about opportunities to play once we can safely get back on the fields. We will be following up with more information about these programs as well as a US Lacrosse program specifically designed for small sided play that can be implemented at the town/club level or even in backyards once small gatherings are permitted. That information will be coming in the next couple of weeks.
We encourage our clubs to reach out to their members and keep them engaged - use any social media platforms you have to encourage teams to make a "have a pass" videos, team tic-tok dances, or do Zoom calls with each other. Keep your players occupied with stickwork assignments, fitness routines, challenges and more. If you need help with any content, please go to the US Lacrosse homepage Here (https://www.uslacrosse.org/lax-at-home) and take what you need to keep these kids occupied and their skills progressing. Please feel free to pass that link onto your membership so parents can do the same at home. Kids need help to manage this unprecedented situation - just because you can't be physically present with your team doesn't mean you can't still help them. For many of us, being a coach isn't something we can just turn off - use these tools to continue to help them.
While this is certainly not the season we were hoping for there are bright spots we can look to. Take the time as a club, and as a parent of a youth athlete to look at this as an opportunity to "reset not just restart." Look at the trajectory your club or youth athlete was on, is it going where you want - was that path taking you in a direction you were comfortable with? Was that path sustainable? Was everyone on that path a helper? When we all get back on the field - and we will - do we want to go back to the way it was or just pick back up where we left off? Use this opportunity to make the changes you need to make youth lacrosse better for your club, your child and even for yourself. Take the time to make the changes to make things better - one thing we do have now is time.
On behalf of the league executive council I want to thank you for your time and patience this year.
I look forward to seeing you all on the fields next year!
Sincerely,
Todd Ruff
SJYLA President
