The South Johnston program is a youth football and cheerleading organization affiliated with the National Pop Warner Little Scholars program. We encourage physical fitness, sportsmanship and academics, while providing a team-oriented, recreational outlet for boys and girls.
South Johnston Pop Warner hopes to provide a safe and fun environment for teaching the fundamentals of football and cheerleading and for preparing our participants for competition.
2017/18 All American Scholastic Recognition
South Johnston Pop Warner is a member of the Mid South Region within Pop Warner Little Scholars. The Mid South Region has announced the 2017-2018 scholars.
We conquer with the comments from the region and congratulate the scholars on their hard work and accomplishments. You are commended on how hard you have worked and the dedication that you have shown to your studies and your team.
Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play.
We believe that the standards we have set give these children a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics that will help them develop later on in life.
Like such organizations as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and National Federation of High Schools (NFHS), PWLS has academic guidelines and criteria that need to be met in order for a child to participate.

Each football team has a head coach and up to four assistant coaches. In addition, the staff includes an equipment manager and a team parent, for a total of 7 rostered staff. The Commissioner of South Johnston Pop Warner must approve all coach and trainer selections. The head coach must be 21 years of age or older as of August 1. The head coach has responsibility for all assistant coaches, participants and parents.
To be considered for a coaching position, you must:
Complete the South Johnston Pop Warner Coach Application
Sign the South Johnston Pop Warner Code of Ethics
Complete the Pop Warner Little Scholars Volunteer Application
Submit a copy of your driver's license
South Johnston Pop Warner will conduct a criminal background check on all applicants.
The head coaches are selected by the commissioner. The head coaches then select their assistant coaches from the pool of applications approved by the commissioner. Because of the limited number of rostered coaching positions, not everyone who submits a coach application gets to coach.
All rostered staff must pass a criminal background check. All rostered coaches must hold current NYSCA football certification. Certification sessions are provided for those coaches who do not already have NYSCA football certification. Renewals can be done online. Each staff must also have someone with current first aid and CPR certification.
2016 UPDATE:
Challenger Division
The Challenger division is a Pop Warner football and cheer program for youth ages 5 to 18 with physical and/or developmental disabilities who are enrolled in school. The Challenger program provides a safe and structured environment for everyone to participate in the great game of football.
Rules are very similar to the rules for the Pop Warner flag football program. The Challenger program is non-competitive and no score is kept. Participants may play with a “buddy” who assists them with the ball and navigating the field.
For more information you can e-mail us at challenger@cff-popwarner.com.
