The Coast Star (2/23/17) "Purple Roses go extra time, but fall to Fighting Irish"
By Len Bardsley
LAWRENCE — It was a long night for the St. Rose ice hockey team during its first round state tournament game against Notre Dame. The Purple Roses had chances to put away the Irish, but eventually were defeated in a shootout, falling 3-2. The loss ends the St. Rose season with a record of 9-10-4.
The way things started it looked as thought it might be a long game for Irish goalie Michael Bonavico and his teammates. Notre Dame was the 15th seed and St. Rose the 18th, but it was the Purple Roses who carried the play and put pressure on the Irish for much of regulation. “They [Notre Dame] are a heck of a team,’’ said St. Rose coach Dan Grothues. “But we let them hang around a little bit.’’ Grothues was quick to credit Bonavico for being the main reason the Irish were able to hang around. “Their goalie played incredible,’’ said Grothues. “It easily could have been a 4-1, 5-1 game going into the third period.’’ The Notre Dame goalie made stops on Alex Phipps off a Sean Grant pass early in the first period before turning away Shane Force on a backhand.
St. Rose goalie Steven Gibilisco made a pad save during an Irish power play early in the second period after a scoreless opening period. Gibilisco got some help killing off a short Notre Dame two-man advantage early in the second period when Mark Sandomierski did some great work along the boards during the Purple Rose penalties.
St. Rose took a 1-0 lead midway through the second period when Sean Grant took a pass from Phipps and scored on a wrist shot in the slot. The Purple Rose lead didn’t last long as Danny Murphy scored on a rising wrist shot for a shorthanded goal for the Irish, tying the game 2-2 with 5:15 left in the second period.
Joe Trilli finished off a 2-on-1 with Bryce Grant by tapping the puck past Bonavico, giving the Purple Roses a 2-1 lead with 4:46 left in the second period. St. Rose had several chances to extend the lead, but the Notre Dame goalie turned away Shane Force from close range before making a stop on Will Lemonie from point blank range late in the second period.
“We got a lot of pressure on him,’’ said Grothues. “We got a lot of shots on him. You get that kind of pressure and he is still making those saves...We had nothing else really to do.’’
It looked as Gibilisco and the Purple Rose defense might hold the one-goal lead the duration of the third period, until the Irish got the opening they needed. St. Rose was whistled for a too many men penalty and a roughing penalty on the same sequence, giving Notre Dame a full, two-minute, two-man advantage.
The Irish coach decided to increase the odds for Notre Dame during the power-play and he pulled Bonavico for an extra skater, giving the home team a 6-on-3 edge on the ice. The move paid off as the Irish swarmed the net and knocked in a loose puck with 3:02 left in the third period to tie the game 2-2.
Notre Dame had a chance to win the game in overtime when the Irish were awarded a penalty shot when the Purple Roses were whistled for deliberately knocking the net off its moorings to stop play. Gibilisco, however, made a stick save on the penalty shot to extend overtime.
The Purple Roses had a power-play during overtime and though they buzzed the Notre Dame net, they could not finish off the Irish. The game went to a shootout and it was no supprise it took one extra round of shooters to find a winner.
Sean Grant and Phipps scored on back-to-back shots to give St. Rose a 2-1 edge in the shootout, but Bonavico stopped the next three Purple Rose shooters, while Notre Dame converted two of its next three shots to clinch the victory.
Despite the loss, Grothues was proud of his team and how they rebounded from a rough start to the season. “We are so proud of these guys’’ said Grothues. “Around mid December they could have mailed it in, but nobody did and we had some great moments in the back half of the season. No one wanted to quit, they kept working hard, they kept at it.’’

APP.COM (2/12/17) "Hockey Awards: ..."
Congratulations Sean Grant & Will Lemonie
Honorable mention: St. Rose winger forward Sean Grant shouldered a top line role in his first year at the varsity level, and hit his stride in January, scoring in six of the Frozen Roses’ eight games, while racking up 13 points on five goals and eight assists, including two goals and an assist in a Class A North victory over Howell (Jan. 13).
Honorable mention: St. Rose junior Will Lemonie spent the last two seasons in the crease, proving more than serviceable between the pipes. However, Lemonie entered the program as a forward, and in his final scholastic campaign the winger has flourished with 22 points, including 15 goals, which ties him for the team lead. Lemonie came up big for St. Rose last month 14 points, including eight goals, but what's more, his tallies came in clutch situations as the senior scored twice in wins over Howell, Wall Township and St. John Vianney.

Will Lemonie scored two goals as Saint Rose raced out to a 4-0 lead, but had to hang on for a 4-3 win over Wall. Watch highlights of a great game from Jersey Shore Arena in Wall
Saint Rose 4 Wall 3
The Frozen Roses raced out to a 4-0 lead at Jersey Shore Arena and held off a late Wall surge to pick up an upset victory. Mike Russ and Will Lemonie scored goals 31 seconds apart to give Saint Rose a 2-0 lead at the end of one period. Alex Phipps made it a 3-0 Roses lead and Lemonie added his second goal off a marvelous give and go with Sean Grant. Wall stormed back starting with a goal by Nick Casais in the second period. In the third period, Larry Hooper and Thomas Falletta scored, but Steven Gibilisco was able to hold off a late power play to secure the win with 22 saves.
The Coast Star (1/26/17) " Purple Roses earn milestone win over Knights"
By Len Bardsley
WALL — The St. Rose ice hockey team waited seven years to face Wall before hosting the Crimson Knights on Friday at Jersey Shore Arena.
St. Rose made the most of its chance to scratch that seven-year itch against the Crimson Knights. The Purple Roses put together one of their best efforts of the season to skate past Wall 4-3. It was the first win in program history for St. Rose against the Crimson Knights.
Purple Rose senior captain Alex Phipps could not wait to get a chance to play Wall. “My brother [Christian] played Wall,’’ said Phipps. “I have wanted Wall for a long time. This is the best team they have had in a long time, to beat them at their best is something I am going to remember. It will probably be my favorite win of my high school career.’’
The Purple Roses came out strong against the Crimson Knights scoring two goals in a span of 35 seconds midway through the opening period. Michael Russ scored on a tap-in from the side of the net off a Joe Trilli assist with 6:41 left in the first period to give the Purple Roses a 1-0 lead. Will Lemonie gave St. Rose a 2-0 advantage with 6:06 left in the first period when he was left alone in front of the Crimson Knights’ goal.
“They were ready,’’ said Wall coach Mike Dianora of St. Rose. “Give [St.Rose coach] Dan [Grothues], credit, give his team credit. They took the early lead on us, we were not prepared early.’

The Purple Roses took a 3-0 lead with 12:10 left in the second period when Phipps burst through the Wall defense got a step on his pursuers before firing a wrist shot past Logan Beattie. The Purple Roses pushed their lead to 4-0 with 8:26 left in the second period when Lemonie finished off a two-on-one with Shane Force.
The Crimson Knights trimmed the St. Rose lead to 4-1 with 7:26 left in the second period when Nick Casais took a drop pass from Zach Tarantino and fired a wrist shot past Purple Rose goalie Steven Gibilisco with 7:26 left in the second period.
Gibilisco made two tough saves later in the second period, stopping Shane Haviland on a shorthanded rush and then making a glove save on a Haviland slap shot through traffic. Gibilisco was also getting plenty of help from his defense of Keelan McGovern, Bryce Grant, Mike Fullman, Mark Sandomierski and Joe Merlucci.
Grant broke up a two-on-one for the Crimson Knights late in the second period.
At the other end Logan Beattie kept the Purple Roses within reach by stopping Bryce Grant with a glove save and making a pad save on a 2-on-1 on Phipps in the final seconds of the second period.
“I think everyone played solid,’’ said McGovern. “It was a really well rounded game. Everyone wants this game.’’
Gibilisco made a glove save on Jack Textor and a pad save on Larry Hooper before Hooper scored on a high wrist shot for a power-play goal for Wall with 7:46 left in the third period.
Tom Falletta scored on a high wrist shot for the Crimson Knights with 2:40 left in the third period to cut the St. Rose lead to 4-3.
It got very tense and interesting for the Purple Roses when Phipps was called for interference with 2:15 left in the third period. Wall put heavy pressure on the Purple Rose goal with Beattie pulled for an extra attacker. Gibilisco made a pad save in traffic and St. Rose could celebrate a milestone win.
“It means everything to us,’’ said McGovern. “We have wanted to play them since Alex and I were freshmen. “To finally get the chance and beat them, it means everything to us.’’
Phipps felt it was torture to watch the last two minutes from the penalty box, but savored the final seconds on the ice while getting the long sought after win over Wall. “It was very, very sweet,’’ said Phipps. “I waited for it and waited for it and it was worth it.’’
Grothues gave credit to his team for a great week of practice and a near-perfect game. “It is a good win,’’ said Grothues. “The boys have been waiting for this game for a while. We had a great practice week. The guys had a lot of energy going into the game, they worked hard and it paid off for them. They deserved it.’’
The Coast Star (1/19/17) "Purple Rose offense has big night vs. Howell Rebels"
By Len Bardsley
WALL — The St. Rose ice hockey team knew it was coming when the Purple Rose offense erupted and time arrived on Friday against Howell at Jersey Shore Arena.
St. Rose skated past the Rebels 7-1. It marked the first time the Purple Roses had scored over four goals all season. St. Rose coach Dan Grothues was thrilled to see his team find the back of the net early and often against the Rebels. “It has been all season,’’ said Grothues on waiting for a big scoring output from his team. “Their goalie [Bobby Dovenero] is one of the better in the Shore Conference, for us to get some goals on him early and go into the locker room with a pretty good lead was the first time we have been in that situation for a while.’’
The Rebels actually took a 1-0 lead on the Purple Roses with 5:32 left in the first period on a goal by Ryan Damelio.
Sean Grant scored the first of his two goals two minutes later off assists from Alex Phipps and Will Lemonie to tie the game 1-1. The Purple Roses took the lead for good in the first minute of the second period off another goal by Grant set up by Phipps.
Phipps, a senior forward, would end the game with two goals and seven assists, getting involved in every goal of the game. The Purple Rose captain has been the clear spark for the St. Rose offense with his strong skating and ability to put pressure on an opposing defense.
The top forward line of Grant, Phipps and Lemonie can be a tough combination when they get rolling and the game against the Rebels was a perfect example. Grant can match the speed of Phipps, while Lemonie does not hesitate to go to the net or use his size and strength along the boards.
Lemonie is a perfect compliment to Grant and Phipps and is enjoying his first season for St. Rose playing out of the goal. “I love it,’’ said Lemonie of playing forward. Lemonie feels a good week of practice had St. Rose ready for the Rebels. “We built some confidence in practice,’’ said Lemonie. “We have been practicing really well. I get in front of the net and everything works out from there.’’
Grothues feels Lemonie does a great job of putting himself in the right position to score. “Will has played well,’’ said Grothues. “He has a knack of finding the back of the net. He gets in the right places. He is a strong player. He is coming out of his shell and being in the right places.’’
The Purple Roses did a great job closing out the second period to take control of the game. Phipps used a burst of speed to go right through the Rebels defense before scoring on a breakaway with 1:31 left in the second period to give St. Rose a 3-1 lead.
The Purple Rose line of Phipps, Grant and Lemonie put some heavy pressure on the Howell net before Mark Sandomierski swept in from his defensive position to score with only 46 seconds left in the second period, giving St. Rose a 4-1 advantage.
The Purple Roses killed off a penalty early in the third period before totally taking over the game. “The guys responded well,’’ said Grothues. “They killed off a penalty in the first couple minutes of the third and we were able to put a couple more pucks in to finish off the game.’’
Lemonie scored two goals in a span of two minutes in the third period to give St. Rose a 6-1 lead. Phipps would close out the scoring for St. Rose. Lemonie was confident the Purple Roses offense always had the ability to have a big game.
“We knew we had it in us,’’ said Lemonie. “We just have to show up. We got right on top of them and we kept going.’’
