Sharks Lose in State Final
Blance Ely ends PV Season with a 44-38 loss in Championship Game
Ponte Vedra, with their 65-51 victory over Tallahassee Leon, have now reached the final four for an unprecedented fourth straight year. And, the way the Sharks are playing late in the season, it has become clear that this is potentially a team that has their eyes on a state championship.
Led by their sensational point guard David-Sanchez Barrara, the Sharks blew this game wide open by doubling up Leon 20-10 in the game's final quarter. Barrara led the Sharks in scoring with 16 points, but he did more than score --- much more! The 6-2 senior dished off for nine assists, many of those on spectacular passes, led Sharks rebounders with seven while also coming up with three steals.
On the receiving end of many of Sanchez-Barrara's pinpoint passes were a trio of Sharks who also reached double figures. 6'5 junior Maddox Palmer had 14 points and put an exclamation point on the victory with a thunderous slam dunk off a Barrara feed that extended the Shark's lead to 62-48 with less than two minutes remaining.
6?9 junior Trace Westercamp banged in 13 points and was a rim protector with four blocks. Alex Katsikas continued his deadly out court shooting as he banged in four shots from beyond the 3-point arc to finish with 12 points. Head coach Ben Wilson also received some much-needed help from his bench. Palmer, just two minutes into the contest picked up two quick personal fouls. Not to worry as 6'5 senior Paul Burkhardt, who has been battling head injuries all season, came to the rescue and scored three points while pulling down three rebounds in the first quarter.
The lads from the Capital City came out firing to begin the contest as they took a 13-6 lead midway through the opening stanza. The Sharks battled back to score the next six points to send the game into the second quarter dead-even at 13-all. The game remained tight until the Sharks took control in the game's final eight minutes. PV went on a couple of timely 8-0 runs in the final two quarters to improve their record against top-notch competition to 21-8 and are looking for more.
A possible unsung hero on the evening was Ponte Vedra's veteran athletic director Michael Harrison. After a Shark player took offense to a hard foul and tempers were flaring, Harrison saved a possible ejection of a star PV player when he quickly burst onto the court and led the PV player to the sidelines. An ejection of the player would have meant a one-game suspension and would mean sitting out the opening game of the final four.
Due to a quirk in the FHSAA playoffs, the Sharks will not play in the final four until March 5th, a delay that surely is going to bring up much controversy.
