Coach Darrell Champion (coach Champ) is from Bernice, LA where he began coaching little league baseball at the age of 16. In his first year of coaching he took the team to the little championship of Union Parish. At the age of 20 coach Champion joined the United States Navy as an enlisted sailor. During his time in the Navy coach Champion continued to work with and coach youth sports teams. During 1990 on his first tour of duty in Gulfport, MS coach Champion played point guard on the undefeated NMCB-133 basketball team. The team competed in overseas competition in Rota, Spain were they beat the host team Naval Station Rota 2 - 1 in the best of 3 series. Due to military obligations Naval Station Rota replaced NMCB-133 in the European forces tournament in Aviano, Italy and won the championship.
While serving a joint service tour of duty with the US Army coach Champion was the head coach and player for the Fort Detrick flag-football team that won the COMFAIRMED Mid Atlantic championship at Carlisle Barracks in Pennsylvania. During his tour at Fort Detrick coach Champ coached little league baseball, youth basketball, and the Naval Medical Logistics Command basketball teams.
After retiring from the Navy in August 2007, coach Champ started volunteering at the General Heiser Boys and Girls Club in Dumfries, VA. It didn't take long for coach Champ to assemble a dominate team of 9-11 and 12-15 year old's. The success of those teams led to his forming of the Team Elite 14U team. After a successful run of three years coach Champ was recruited in 2010 to be Commissioner of Boys Basketball and head coach for the Virginia Select AAU Basketball Association.
In February 2015 coach Champ along with coach Terry Carden, coach Ashley Avery, and coach Jose Maldonado, formed the Stafford Orange Sports Group (SOSG) and the Big Orange Basketball Program. In 2017, the Big Orange captured the D1 International 17U boys championship in Orlando, FL.
