| Lastyear the league fee was $650 and the league supplied the balls. This year the league fee is $615 and the teams supply there own balls. So basically the league is cheaper this year, but the 35 dollars that each team saves will not come close to purchasing enough balls for each game. The dozen balls last year that were provided were crap, but the probably cost most that 35 bucks. Are there going to be more games this year and a tournament at the end of the season? Are there going to be "2" umpires per game? I know that some of these questions will be answered at the league meeting on March 27.

| It was 635 last year I think but I am not 100 percent for sure. $10 dollars extra for balls per game is more like it. Well I guess we will just have to see what any new changes there will be. I just hope that there is a league tournament at the end of the year like there was 2 years ago. That was nice having a tournament at the end of the season, it really sucked last year that we did not have one. Trophies is something that I think we could do without. Give a trophy to the division winners and the tournament winner and that is it.

Last but not least.... i play in cdale and murphy and believe you me this is the best league around, hands down... And as for the balls.... this yr you can buy what you want as long as they are asa stamped(and not legends) so the mushy ball thing mite be a personal problem!!!

| All great questions. Appreciate you asking and glad you did.
1) Last years league fee was $600 + $30 for ASA registration for $630 total.
2) This year it is $615 total. Difference is that we are not supplying balls this year. You will be able to buy your own ASA 44/375 ball, except for the Legend brand of softball.
3) The balls last year cost $30 a dozen. The balls weren't crap, they are in fact very good balls. If you are comparing them to the Legends the league used to use, then that's where the problem lies. Those were not 44/375 and that is why Legend is no longer allowed/used in any ASA/NSA/USSSA/ISA league. Oh yeah, they are now out of business also. These fields are 274'. They are by todays standards TINY because wood bats are obsolete. If you are not able to hit one of those balls out of these fields you either A) need to work on your swing mechanics or B) are not a homerun hitter and need to focus on your strength which should then be placement. Not to sound harsh, but that is the fact of it. Not everyone is a HR hitter. Not everyone runs a 4.5 forty. Everyone is different. The balls however were not crap.
4) The reason that the league is $15 more per team is to help with our electric bill that's gonna come this year. That's not going to be nearly enough to cover the rise in rates that we're going to see, but I think we will have enough left over from this previous year to help cover it. If not, we'll see what happens, lol. But I thought you would rather me take the risk than to spring a $750 league fee on everyone at the first meeting. Am I right in assuming that?
5) There will NOT be more games this year. Also, right now I am not planning on having a tournament like there used to be. That CAN change at the managers meeting. I am assuming that you were not at last years meeting to see the league fee breakdown. The league fee is broken down very simply on that. For the Men's and Co-Ed, I figure the league fee based on 24 games. If you want more games, the fee will go up. The cost for each double header is $97. Which makes it $48.50 for each team for every 2 games they want to add to the schedule.
If we decide to have league tournaments, then the amount of games will have to be decreased to 20 games a team.
For example, if you have a 6 team double elim tournament, you have 11 games. 11 x $48.5 (cost per game) is $533.5. You divide that amount by the 6 teams in the tournament, and that's $89 per team. That's almost 4 regular season games worth. Out of the 6 teams, 1 team gets 2 games (0-2) for a grand total of $89. 2 will get 3, 2 will get 4 and 1 will get 5 games possibly.
Again, if this is something that you want changed and you think it's a better use of money, then please voice your opinion at the league meeting. The decision on this will be left up to a vote by the team MANAGERS.
6) Umpires. Again, this year just like last year, this is what I do. I get the league schedules together and I bring them with me to the Southern Illinois Umpire Meeting. I know the umpires and most really seemed to like working over here. We pay every 2 weeks and they have said that they like the people over here and the consistency that the league has. Anyway, it works like this.
The person running the meeting says "OK, on May 7th we need 4 umpires in Marion, 4 in Carbondale and 2 in Murphysboro. Who wants what?" The umpires then speak up and take what they want until that night gets filled up. Then they move to May 8th and so on. This goes on for about 2 hours. Then they go back through to try and fill any spots that didn't get filled.
Here are some of the problems: 1) # of umpires. They just aren't out there. They can make $45 doing a high school baseball game for an hour and a half or make $60 doing slowpitch softball for 4 hours. What would any normal person do given that option? It's very hard to get 10 umpires in May and June while High School sports are still going. 2) Sick/whatever. Just like you calling into work because you're sick, get the opportunity to go on a last minute fishing trip and call in sick, your kid gets sick, etc... They call in and then all other umpires are usually already busy. We try to get other umpires if someone can't make it, but that's all we can do. 3) Logistics. MANY of the umpires are over in Carbondale and Murphysboro. They'll spend $8 in gas just coming over here for a night. It's not worth it to them all the time. To umpire a 6:15 game in Marion, you have to leave Carbondale @ 5:30 to get here at 6. If you get done at 10:30, you get home at 11. So you're gone 5 1/2 hours to make $52. That's $9.46 an hour, to lose your whole night after working all day long.
I think that covers all of your questions. Please, if you have any more or I did not answer them sufficiently, ask them at the managers meeting on the 27th. We'll talk about what I've done this off season, changes and hopeful changes to the fields, same number of games or less games and a tournament, pitching mat, etc....
See you in 3 weeks.
Dan
