This inquiry was received from Marcus Hatfield of the new Danger Squirrels team:

I was wondering what the rules are for balls and strikes. Are there any strikeouts or walks? If so, are they called by the catcher?

Generally there are no balls and strikes, and everyone hits. That's really the point - pitchers let the hitters put the ball in play, and batters go up there not trying to draw walks.

Some teams like having swinging third strikes, but even so you rarely see anyone strike out unless they're really new to the game (which I feel is unfair seeing this is a rec league.) And you might have to wait out certain pitchers that seem to intentionally throw junk because they know they're not in danger of walking anyone.

Once in a while a team suggests having swinging third strikes for guys only, but I don't know too many teams that like or use this rule.

Just meet with the other captain before the game to figure out what rule you want to use.
