| I attended the AGM and bought the idea to try out a one umpire system. After 10 games I feel it's been unsuccessful. Does the cost-saving benefit outweigh the loss of accuracy? I am not slamming our umps, I'm just asking to abandon this experiment and put another one on the diamond to improve the quality of our game. Does anyone disagree?

| Just a friendly reminder Nate. We are all playing in a rec slow pitch league. In the 10 years I have played in the league I have yet to see any scouts in the stands. Go out, play some ball, have a good time and a couple bevies afterwards. But if you really feel your team is getting short-changed on calls maybe your team can ante up the approximately $8,000 a year for the second umpire.

| We should go back to having to umps many games i've played and seen there has been alot of no calls. Most of the time the umps do not even leave the plate area this would make it hard for any to make a proper call.

| I think two umps should be mandatory just like the scoreboard at crosby. I understand we are all out for good times and just adding another ump brings another piece of the puzzle to why we love being out there. Who ever is saying the league is not competative hasnt been around for longer then a week or is just full of it. I'll pay an extra $20 a season if its such a big deal as Im sure all on my team will. 90% of us pay $400 a season times 2 to play on two hockey teams in the winter, i think we can justify $150-$200 for Baseball.

| Hey kid, have you played softball outside of Unionville? I have been playing for approximately 13 years in different leagues. This was the only one with 2 umps. One works fine. They have been doing a pleasant job so far this year.

| I can't beleive we are still talking about this. It's one of the best decisions this league has made in a while. It has nothing to do with saving money. There are less arguments and when a one umpiring system makes a call...the play stands. We haven't had one game this year, where two umpires would have made a difference.
It's true that other leagues that are very competitive only have one umpire, and we are not following 'what the other boys are doing'...as Jim eludes too.....
Instead of talking about this over and over again, why not make suggestion of what you would like to see with some of the money that is being saved? Why not put a positive spin on it...? I know it easier to point fingers and say negative things...try looking at the good for once!
The umpires we have today, have done a great job! They are all capable of working alone and have proven that.
We have all said, this league is about having fun and that it is a rec league.....so why do we want to have enough umps on the field to feel like we're playing in the Major leagues? It's one more ump for you guys to complain too.....

| remember is it the fact that the Ump has missed a call or that you just disagree with the call that has been made cause of course as a player mistakes are never made.

| Don’t worry umpes, we got your back. You guys in my personal opinion are the classiest men that I know, and if anybody says otherwise, I would fight them. In conclusion, the umpires have been impressive. SO JUST CALM DOWN and let the one man do his thing.

| The umpires in our newly reformed league have done a great job of adapting to all the new rules. Keep up the first-class work.

| It is a competitive league, who's kidd'n who? And most of the guys play pretty hard. 2 Umps are better, I think we all can afford a couple extra bucks if that's what it takes. There has been some blown calls this year, that would have been most likely elimated with a 2 ump system. It's a thank-less job and the ump's do a great job putting up with all of us, when we start to wear our emotions on our sleeves. But the bottom line is 2 ump's are better than 1.

| Thanks to all those who replied with intelligent thoughts. I posted it because I was curious how others felt. Apparently there are mixed feelings.
Since posting this originally I have talked to many folks and the only argument I keep hearing is about other leagues. I don't care about other leagues I care about the USPL and the quality of ball there. I'm also not slamming our umps in anyway...if i had concerns about the quality of the umps that would've been the title of the post. I would talk to them directly and not in this fashion.
We see repeated plays where two umps would've made a difference. Many people have posted comments saying it wouldn't make a difference. I can only speak for our games but I assure you it would've made a difference.
All I'm saying is this is the fourth year I've played in this league and I drive here from West Toronto because it's the best adult slo-pitch league with the best "gentlemanly" competition around. When I arrive I'd prefer two umps to ensure accuracy of calls. I still have yet to hear a good argument as to why we should continue with this other than "just have fun" or "every other league does it." I'm anxious to hear one good reason that doesnt involve these two statements.
It is our league and if the majority wants two umps again that is what must happen according to the AGM last year. I strongly suggest you all take a few games to look at the issue before making a decision.
My opinion is simple. We had it last year, tried it out and it failed. Let's get our heads out of the sand and fix this before it costs someone a shot at the title.

| I don't think the issue is the Umps, so called "bad calls", it's if they can see the plays or not. After talking to most of them after the games, they themselves admit that sometimes they just have to guess. They are doing a fantastic job, but nobody can see the all the bags, and the play in the outfield at the same time.

| Well, it sounds as if this issue (among others) is going to come up at the AGM on October 24. As I recall, last year this topic got the bum’s rush and was hammered through. Whether you think there should be 2 umpires or just 1, you should have your say at the meeting. Make sure you attend to make your wishes known.
