| I tell you what...Not since July 24th of '83 have I seen another team challenge a bat for use of pinetar.....You all saw my reaction back then...I almost did it again yesterday as Highland Park challenged a Sport and Spine player after a S&S player drilled a pseudo curveball that did everything but curve to the left field corner for an RBI double. I mean are you serious? They were playing at Dunning Field with some kind of family reunion doing Karaoke really badly in the background....Not exactly Yankee Stadium. That pitcher deserved to have that pitch drilled. The coach should be embarassed.

| So you are telling me that the umpires had to call a guy out for the pinetar rule on the bat? The highland coach actually challenged this? That is very bush. Let me guess, they were losing by 5+ at the time. That is embarrassing.

| Didn't see that one coming Ricky. Did you come up with that one by yourself? Very creative. I bet your college degree had something to do with it.

| We apologized for the call after the game. Obviously the players in the field were not consulted before the dugout made the call.
I was embarrassed but to be fair the bat was tarred all the way up leaving only 5-6 inches clean. If the player wanted to use that much tar he should have at least bought a black bat.
Neither the tar (LOL) or the call had any effect on the outcome of the game.

| Just so you know why there is a rule about how far up a bat barrel pine tar can be, here's what I know.
Bat manufacturers are required to place their logo/trademark (or ring) 18" up from the knob end. The pine tar is supposed to remain below this area.
Why? Originally (way back when) it was written so the pine tar doesn't dirty the ball (no lights, fewer balls, etc). After the Brett/Martin incident in New York, the rule was examined and re-worded a bit.
The rule that the pine tar should remain below the bat manufacturer's trademark is still in the rule book, but never enforced. I would say that all MLB players who use pine tar do not even know the rule, and umpires never enforce it.
It's basically in place so that the ball doesn't get gunked up with a sticky substance when the bat meets the ball, ball gets fielded, fielder gets a weird grip, etc, etc. Another argument is that if the ball is struck on the part of the bat with pine tar, it will have unusual spin, thus giving the batter an advantage.
Whatever the case, pine tar will not make a bat harder. It just won't. That was Martin's argument when he wanted George Brett's bat checked.
So there's just some info for you.

| Jim-
Thanks for addressing the pine tar issue and not tell everyone how dumb they are for not knowing why the rule was put into place.
