Wow what a great game to say the least. Too bad it had to end on a HEADLINER call by the base ump who by the way is a Minnetonka grad. Tonka had a runner on third with one out in the botom half of the ninth and a balk of al things was called.

We go all season watching balk afer balk after balk committed by pitchers; most of which are meaningless in the grand scheme of things and then in a awesome game by both teams it ends up being decided by a balk call...UNREAL.....other then that all i have to say it was a questionable balk call at the very least and I am sure many would want to know what the actual balk was that gave tonka the win.

With all of that being stated did the better team win? Probably. Would they have won without the balk? Probably but just the same it was a HEADLINER CALL AND A BRUTALLY FITTING END TO A GREAT GAME.... a weak balk call of all things.

That is too bad!

Perhaps more on umpires laer then again perhaps not!

Agreed. It was a terrible way to end the game.

So don't call a balk when its 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth or call it when then runner is only at first? If the pitcher would of not rolled through his motion, this conversation does not happen. I agree its a bad way to end the game, which was a great one, but umps don't always look at situations, they react.
Stay hot!

Just to clarify, I was not at the game when the "Questionable" balk was called.

Hearing from Strike1, if it was a "roll through the motion" balk, I would have to say it SHOULDN'T have been called.

Is the pitcher trying to deceive the runner from stealing home? No. Is rolling through the motion going to benefit the Shamrocks in this situation. No.

Finally, referring to Umpire1's comment "umps don't always look at situations, they react;" I completely disagree. IF YOU ARE AN UMPIRE AND YOU DON'T ANALYZE EVERY SITUATION AND THE POTENTIAL PLAYS, ITS TIME TO HANG IT UP!

A balk is a balk. If he rolled through his motion, great call Mr. Umpire. I wouldn't have the balls to call it.

LET THE PLAYERS DECIDE THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME!

Hey, I play for the Millers. It was a great game, with many questionable calls going both ways. If that was a Tonka grad, then none of us know him. As for whether the balk should have been called, let's just say that no one at the park screamed "BALK," other than the ump who called it. You guys know as well as I do when a pitcher blatantly balks, everyone on the opposing team yells "BALK." I'd like to think we would have scored the game-winning run anyway with one out and runners at the corners, but Shamrocks was getting out of jams like that all game. We were happy to get the win but even we wished it could've happened on a base-hit or even wild pitch, not a questionable balk call.

If you don't have the balls to call it, FellowUmpire, then you should hang it up. Why are you out there if you can't make the calls? For the cash? The girls?

I don't have the balls to make the call because I believe that "balk" SHOULDN'T of been called.

I surely don't do it for the money. NW and other umpiring organizations don't pay enough to to babysit or hear the whining from players/teams whether it's amatuer or not.

I think we can all agree that Tonka was more than likely gonna score that run. The sad thing is that was it was another example of an umpire wanting to be seen.

Most of the umpires in this league whine about not getting paid enough!!! Why should they be paid any more, they are horrible! There are way too many games decided by an umpires calls...not necessarily behind the plate either! Balls and strikes differ from umpire to umpire as long as they are consistent. There is one ump in particular that tries to pick fights with teams. (very classy on his part by the way)

Umpires should have no effect on the outcome of a game, but too many times they do!

Work harder this off-season blue, maybe get an eye exam!

Fellow umpire, its a 3-2 count and the pitch is at the knees, hold on guys, I need more time to ANALize the situation. Read, pause, and REACT! The people that complain about umpires losing games, have you ever umpired? If you don't do it anymore why? We do need more to this fun, part-time job. It is no way a full-time, but some think we are over paid, well come out and babysit some time. Many teams are very well behaved, but still some don't get it. I agree the balk should of not been called, so stop all this hate. The ump is not a Tonka grad, he should of not been working the game, the game is not hios sport to officiate. He should of been officiating the Underwater Hockey Nationals. Let's move on. Godbless the first amendment!
Conley we need you to umpire!!!

Strike1, I wasn't thinking about analyzing a situation with a 3-2 count. A knee high strike is a knee high strike. Although the strike 3 call is a judgement, I think we all know a balk is a lot different.

Enough said, what is done is done. I don't umpire for the money, I actually do it for the love of the game and to also give back to the sport that has gived so much to me.

As a catcher/player you guys (umpires) do a good job overall. Rarely does one call cost a team, if ever. We've all had bad calls against us and will again so let's not hang up on what should be called and what shouldn't be, as an umpire get the best look you can and make a call.

My only additional comment is in a two man game stop and ask for assistance if the other guy's got a better view. If we're paying for two umpires don't be too proud to ask for assistance. Get the call right between the two of you and move on. As players you earn much more respect having a conversation about a play than running away into the outfield.

Just my take, I'll probably never umpire because I'd run too many guys.

I agree with Chris, after watching the Park, Angels game it looked as if a couple calls could have been corrected if the base ump asked for some help. Rough day for Northwest.

Chris,
Love your comments on the two umpire system, they should ask for help. I have done it and its looks very good cause they are the third team. We need to have a round table discussion with the teams after the year or prior to it. Umpires and players unite to get better umpiring!
Good Luck the rest of the tourney! Fellow Umpire and Conley should ump the championship!

I wouldn't need any help from Conley. Conley needs all the help he can get.

If there is a questionable call, you have doubt, always ask your partner. He might of seen something you haven't.

It's the umpires who have a hard on like Mark Miller who has an ego the size of a hot air balloon.

Last post of the night for me.....I WOULD BE ONE OF THE TOP UMPIRES NW HAS...PERIOD! IF FOR NO OTHER REASONS THEN THE FOLLOWING.

1) I actually have played a relatively higher level of ball
2) I have coached baseball for 15 years
3) I get the game
4) I would not be out there to be a lion, to be seen, to be confrontational or other donkey like traits

HELL I PROBABLY SHOULD UMP THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME...BEHIND THE DISH FOR SURE BECAUSE MY STRIKE ZONE WOULD BE BETTER THEN ANY I HAVE SEEN FOR SOME TIME.

All I would need is well versed crew in the field to cover any of the book crap and they would need eexpeirence yelling at each other "im goin out" "im staying in," your staying in "im going out......"i have third, you have second, who is on third, that right whose on third, you stay in, i have the timing play, you cut the pie, slide in behind the runner, maintain your slot...yadadadadadadadadaa.

...all the while i would simply just be a baseball guy, calling a very solid strike zone, watching a game and wating for calls to be made all the while not making any no calls.

IT IS NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS AND UNTIL YO UDO IT, WHICH I HAVE YOU WOULD NOT KNOW THAT UMPIRING IS NOT EASY AND AT TIMES CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT BUT THE ITEMS THAT MOST UMPS DON'T POSSES ARE ONES THEY WILL NEVER LEARN BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT BASEBALL GUYS....A BASEBALL GUY CAN LEARN ALL THE OTHER BS AND EXCLUDE FROM THAT WHAT THEY THINK CLOUDS THE ACTAULLITY OF THE GAME AND UMPIRING........

I would seriously umpire the plate of any state tournament game period, tomorrow, the next day, Sunday and I bet a dime to a dollar VALLEX AND BILLY AND WHOMEVER that niether team would complain about balls and strikes or that i acted like a lion, made a no call into a call and did not treat the game like a baseball guy should view it.

SERIOUSLY.....MY GEAR IS ALL SHINED UP AND READY TO GO.
