For those who are in the which bat can I buy that won't be illegal next week? category, I spoke to a retail manager that just came back from a baseball demo and he said that ASA who we are governed by has told all manufacturers of bats that they have to clear all their inventory by July 1, 2008 (warehouses empty) of any bats with a rating of 98 mph or higher. However, all the bats that are on the shelves that they made prior to July 1 2008 can still be used until they break, crack, dent etc a form of grandfathering if you will.
So, you can buy a bat that is on the shelf with a 98 (to 120 I think) until the stock is gone and it is legal.
If someone else could varify this before anyone buys or does not buy a bat before the deadline that would be great.

PS Hatz, you cannot go into the A draft until you have settled your tab from your sponsor from last year you cheapskate.

Jimmy,

I guess you just can't do without me. Always excuses, excuses, excuses just to try to keep me on the team. BJ has been trying to buy me out by filling me up with free dinners at Kelsey's

Nobody really knows what ASA is going to do come the middle of the summer season. They change their mind in the flip of a coin. There are lots of rumours ie. new standard will be 93 mph, no composites, etc etc.
As of right now no more S2, Freak, PST max, and some Ests. There might be a few more so be careful when you pick up new bats.

I will post a link later to the list of ASA- NON approved bats. I will give a friend who is a bat retailer to see if he has any more info as to what may happen (what Tonga had mentioned)

NON Approved Bat List

Should we establish NOW some kind of rule then for the upcoming season? eg. we follow Jimmy's line of thinking that bats purchased now are okay'd until manufacturers clean out their inventory. It can be a very expensive mistake if someone buys a bat that halfway through the season is disqualified. It sounds like the League needs to come up with a rule of some kind.

Check the link Steve put in his post. It gives you all of the bats that are not approved for 2008. There may be a couple more added, but if you stick to the 98's for now, you should be safe.

What Jimmy is proposing is we can still use our Freak and Synergy 2 until it breaks, and this goes against the non approved list. The only way to enforce the rule is to follow the non-approved list, so all teams should be checking the list prior to purchasing a bat. The Umps need a list to go off, and knowing if you bought the bat before it became illegal, or after it was posted won't work.

The list will also be posted on this site for everyone to see.

The issue we are seeing is they are making the 98's, 100's and 120's the same look and colors, so when a team questions the bat, all teams should understand it's not the intention of calling the other team cheaters...It's the intention to keep the pitcher safe. You are questioning the color and logo's on the bat. All bats have a model number. If it doesn't match the model number on the non-approved list, then the bat is good to go.

No team should take it personally when this happens...Cheers.

You're exactly right. I was only using Jimmy's idea as an example. As long as it's consistent then it's fine. I just think an agreement to the rule has to be reached sooner than later. If it is that only those on the list as of the start of the season so be it, but a decision must be made sooner than later.

Sorry if there has been a misunderstanding, I was not proposing a grandfathering, I was told by a major sports retail manager that he is allowed to keep stock of any bats made before July 1 2008 and sell them. However, if you buy a bat you can still use it until it is damaged or has no more pop (which for Hatzus would be immediately out of the package). Anyways, there is a new list of non approved bats for this year, so i was told to buy one or more bats now because once they are gone, they are gone.
I would, and probably most of you want to know what is going on? Is this true or not because that is what they are telling retailers. It is not a cheap investment.

In the USPL we go by SPO
which in turn uses ASA rules
the list I posted is all the Illegal bats
you can buy anything you like and the retailers can sell anything but the league has final say on what bats we all swing
so as of right now only bats that say 98mph or ones that are not on that list

Stevie didn't you have one? Too bad they aren't legal. I tried one at the end of the season in October. They are in the top 5 bats that I have swung. 1) Ultra 1 2) Ultra 2 3) Freak 4) Lady Virus 5) Synergy 2

All I have to do is get the ball past you Stevie...do you play the pull or gut shot?

Last year at this time Steve announced that he was coming back to the USPL for another season. Anyone else getting to be as sick of this guy as I am? Mac, you had a good career, but you're looking silly and selfish now, especially because of your diminished skills. Just hang 'em up already and let the Pumbers start the rebuilding process!

Mac, if you want freaks and wickeds, they are everywhere only that they are selling for $199. What a steal for a bat you can only use in bp and to put bases in.

Just had it confirmed. Bat manufacturers cannot sell any bats greater than 98 mph after July 1 2008, after that they can only make and sell bats rated less thatn 98. Any legal bat rated higher than that right now can be used until it breaks or inventory lasts. If you depend on a specific bat, buy now. This news has been kept hush-hush and is just starting to be leaked out now.

Understood, the current legal bats over 98 are living on borrowed time, so watch what you purchase, that is all I am saying.

Im a softball gear head. I buy a bat or two a year and try my best to know as much as I can about all the available bats and each technology they offer. So what I wanna know is what new bats are you guys gonna be breakin out this season? Anyone swinging the Miken Recoil or the Worth Mutant? Anyone using a bat from '07 or before that they swear by? Anyone gonna be using a Utrip bat instead of your old ASA bat?

Im gonna be swinging a Miken NRG 600 with an NRG 500 as my back up.

A few teams last year were swinging the Recoil and Mutant and seemed to hit the ball well, but then again it was Steve and buddy from Jakes hitting them out...

Sounds like the Easton Synergy Brett Helmer model is a big seller this year...Like the Mutant there is a legal and illegal version, so when buying these bats, check the illegal list and make sure they are the 98 models...

The Lady Virus is now illegal..Guess Gonzo finally has to give up his daughters bat! There goes the Chicken Wings

Hi All, here is the latest I could find on the new testing ASA will be doing:

Starting July 1st all new models of bats for ASA will be subject to new ASA test procedures. ASA has notified all bat companies that all (2009 Models) will have to undergo a new test named the (ABI) Advanced Break in Technique test which is actually ASA rolling the bat with a compression machine on the barrel. The bat would then be put to the 98 mph test and if it fails then ASA reserves the right to ban the bat. This has forced the Bat companies to make the bat around 93 to 94 mph in the wrapper to begin with instead of how they have been making bats like this as close to 98 mph in the wrapper as they could. All current models will be grandfathered in indefinitely and will not be subject to the new ABI testing.

Jimmy is indeed the Dr. Bat of our League. I know because I was one of his earlier experiments and I admit a failed one. He got the love of softball right, but not the ability to play it, and he got the bat technology knowledge dead on, but not my ability to use said bats. Also, performance enhancing substance technology was nowhere near at the level it is today. You trapped me in your maze of hypocritical ramblings.

As I stated in the beginning of the last year, many guys who were never capable of hitting home run balls will now be going for these bats, but I'm not blaming the bats for it...I'm blaming the players.

Guys still aren’t getting it about the bats.

Conversation #1 that had on opening night.
Me: “Hey #22, you can’t use that Synergy bat, it’s now illegal.”
#22: “What d’ya mean, Mr. Umpire. This is my favorite bat… I used it all last year, and hit 5 homeruns with it here at Crosby!”
Me: “How many homeruns did you hit in the 10 previous years before you started using that bat?”
#22: “None.”
Me: “Maybe that’s why they banned it.”

Conversation #2 that had on opening night.
Me: “Hey #12, you can’t use that Wicked bat, it’s now illegal.”
#22: “No way, Mr. Umpire. I just bought this. My brother-in-law sold it to me over the winter. He gave me a great deal! And, he said there was plenty of pop still left in it.”
Me: “How much did you pay?”
#22: “$100.”
Me: “Wow. I’d like to hear the conversation at your next family get-together.”

Gentlemen, check the web site posted above which have all the banned bats.

Have a good season,
Jim
