Author TOPIC: COURTESY RUNNER RULE - Clairification

A situation has come up this past week in regards to the "rule" concerning the Courtesy Runner.

As the rule states, anybody that is given the courtesy runner, is limited to a single for every AB that follows, for that particular game. All players on the bases at that time can advance as many bases as they choose.

The situation that came up is this. A player was given the courtesy runner, and in a later AB in that same game, that player that previously received the runner, hit the ball OVER the fence at Boston Field. The confusion came on ruling whether the batter was awarded a HR, since it was OVER the fence, or just a single....

* * * RULE EXPLAINED BELOW * * *

A player that is awarded a courtesy runner is limited to a single on the remaining ABs during that particular game. This means that the ruling on the above event was correctly called a SINGLE.

On the surface, someone might think that a guy hits a ball 400ft. but only gets a single, is not right, but it is the rule that's set in place. This post is just to clarify it further. The same can be said for a person that hits a team's 4th ball over the fence. The rule is that a 4th ball over the fence in 1 game by the same team results in an OUT. In this case the player can also hit it 400ft. but be out.

I'm glad to know that the above event didn't factor in deciding the final score, but now that it came up, I just wanted to mention this for everyone to understand.

Thanks,
Mike
