| The big issue that I've heard within the league itself, is the problem with teams playing the "top" teams in the league.
We only had 3 teams this year that could have played in an "A" division.
What I hope to do next year is to have an "Elite" men's league. 3 teams that right now will definately be in this are Just One More, World of Fitness and Ramey Insurance. I would like to get this league to 5 teams.
It will be on Wednesday and will be seperate from the Men's League. If I can get 5 teams, each team would get 16 games for a very "budget" rate. I don't know the numbers yet, but it will be a significant discount that will encourage teams to play for the betterment of the league. I'd like to get a team to come over from Carbondale and hopefully get one other team from Marion, maybe a collection of guys from a couple teams.
Then, the Men's league will have an A and a B division. Teams playing in the A league can not have more than 3 "Elite" league players. Neither an "A" or an "Elite" league player can play in the B league.
Still working on some stuff for it, maybe even a corporate sponsor. Just heads up to let people know and to get ideas if people have anything good.

| sounds good. here is a theory about fielding more teams.
marion has plenty of good players, but not all on one team(excluding the big 3).
here is the point of this. as you said, the other A league teams are good but not as competitive against the top 3/elite teams.
also, the B league has some very good players who are more than capable of playing on A league teams. its just that they may not be that visible to A teams/players because they are on a non-competitive team and/or because they play on thursday nights. there may not be a lot of guys, but enough.
if someone could get together these players from the "other" A teams and from the B teams i dont doubt they could compete. its just finding them and forming a team(or more than one). im sure these guys givin the chance to play against better competition would be happy to pay the fees.
so, there you have it. it might be to problematic to pull off, but its an idea. maybe someone could do it???
who knows, there might be some
"diamond in the rough,stud muffin, ball masher, B leaguer" out there who has yet to be discovered by the A league elitists!

| Just my opinion, form a wooden bat mens league as an experiment. That will make it fun again and appeal to a certain group of players who really don't have enough ego to play "A" league. And that way people wont have to buy a 200+ dollar bat and then have to have it rolled and shaved to be on par with the other illegal bats used in the league. Please do not say it would not make a difference, unless it has been done and tried.
Id say you stand to lose more players after this year than ever if you do not do "something" though. Good idea Dan.

| i dont undestand the ideology behind the wooden bat argument...i play on one of the "elite" teams and there is nobody on my team that shaves their bats to play marion league ball?...the best way to get a bat "hot" is to put a lot of swings on the bat so it gets broken in. there would still be great desparity in the teams in a wooden bat league....it still comes to basics of bat speed, power, and hitting the ball square...i think the whole idea here is to get new teams and make teams more competivive in the 3 league system...i think that alone is a good idea....and to buy a tarp to drape over the top field..lol

| Exactly, defense would be the most impacted area once you take away the crazy bats. 20-30% less ball speed from any swing. Although this has nothing to do with your league, I bet the guy in Desoto who had his throat crushed last week would understand a lot better than an egomaniac who would be relegated to 5 home runs a season instead of 25. Line drives to the wall would fall well short also. You would see guys get in front of the ball instead of laughing and moving away when a 6-5 guy hits a line drive up the gut. The elite players would not feel so elite anymore. But I am not naive, it will never happen. Everyone wants to be a rockstar.

| Is your post regarding "crazy bats" about "shaved" bats or is it about normal bats? I wasn't there and I know the Desoto incident was really unfortunate and hopefully we don't see something like that again. But (this is just what I have heard) if a guy is pitching, doesn't move back and doesn't have his glove up/ready, he has a pretty good chance of getting hit by a wood bat as well.
I understand what you are saying, but things wouldn't change all that drastically. Back in the days of wood bats and then metal bats, the balls were MUCH harder than they are now. MUCH MUCH harder. It of course would make some difference, but the biggest difference between the divisions is talent, not equipment. Agreed, good discussion.

| the incident in desoto was a tragedy, and i can guarantee you that the person was in all of our thoughts and prayers. for the batter in the incident, i have played baseball and softball with him since we were both 17, and in highschool and i can guarantee you that he has always hit the ball hard and will always hit it hard. Major league pitchers get hit every year with baseballs traveling at a greater velocity, you dont hear anything about them going to switch to wiffle ball bats, and i mean no disrespect to the pitcher.
but anyways i agree with doug, and yes i play on one of the elite teams also, i have ever since i started playen softball. when i first started i was average and probaly wouldnt even been a good player on a B team. but what people forget or they neglect is practice and preperation. the majority of the people who play on my league team and weekend teams spend time every week with batting practice, and in the gym staying in shape. if you wanna be good, do something TO GET BETTER.
I dont run the league nor do i want the responsibility of running the league, but since it seems like the majority of the voices complain about the league not being fair and there are 3 good teams that only get beat by each other, well cry me a river. when in the history of sports is being fair and everyone being average acceptable? its not. Im there to win and am always gonna be there to win. I can guarantee you that softball or not, you are there to win, if your there for a good time and for it to be fair and not about winning, then go play coed in murphysboro, or cdale.
I can guarantee you that the Bud/just 1 more team WILL NOT SPLIT UP, that band will not be broken for the league to be more fair, and we will be in the elites, if your scared then dont show. Our sponsors do not donate their money for us to be average, they sponsor us for us to WIN.
I wanna use the herrin boys as an example, for the past couple years they have been a good average team in the league, you know what, now they compete with the best teams in the leauge and dont be surprised if they are there next year competing. My point with them is that they use to be looking in the door, now there right there playen with other good teams.
ALSO there has never been a shaved bat on any of my teams. When Lincoln first started this team, you could count the wins in three years on one hand i believe, steps were made to get better, make your steps to compete, if you find yourself not getting called to play in a weekend tournament, take a step back to see why and progress from there
and for $200.00 bats well the last time i looked nothing is cheap anymore, wood bats are expensive as well, exspecially when you are going to have to purchase a high quality grain bat to endure hundreds of swings, then there going to crack and good luck with manufacturer warranting the wooden bat. that idea is ridiculous.
Bottom line, sports are made to for people to compete, baseball, football, basketball, hockey, softball, etc. Sports were invented to compete and win. teams appear on there scheduled nights to win, if your team won on a regular basis, then you wouldnt be complaining about the league being unfair, and have the same perspective as I and others

| I want to add that good players who play in the B league do not go unnoticed, there is always talk of this person or that person being a prospect to play with another team. Unfortunately when all the teams are not combined in a league, not everyone gets a chance to see who could play at a higher level!!!!

| it seems the perspective of the original post has been lost.(except the clarification of who the real Dan Reid is)
1)wooden bat idea,it wouldnt help, teams with lack o' D would still have no defense, guys who can hit will still hit.
2)as for the league being unfair? its not. im sure it would become monotonous for the top 3 or 4 teams to play each other week after week(thats the whole point of this thread isnt it? to get more teams.)
and yes, if you happened to be one of the lesser talented teams who had to play on wednesday nights it did suck to get pummeled in short games. dont forget, it is only "rec" league. but a lot can be learned from playing against better teams(if you paid attention)
3)Dan has a lot of responsibility and im sure he does have to deal with some whiners. but hes does run the league very well.(at least he is being pro-active in trying to even things out)
4)idea?????take a coaches poll of all the teams(A & B)get their opinions of some of the better players on their teams and/or players from teams they have played against
5)will the real Dan Reid please stand up!

| Good idea dan. Wednesday night is problematic for me, but that is my problem. As far as "shaved" and "rolled" bats I have no idea where this guy is coming from. We have guys on our team (ramey) that just hit the ball hard - doesn't matter what they use - eveybody has access to the same equipment, and with a 6 homerun limit having bats that are even hotter than ASA would be a disadvantage, not an advantage - therefore it would be stupid to try to make a bat hotter if you have a team that routinely reaches its hr limit in the 3rd or 4th innning. Its a poor workman who blames his tools.
