My Mom just let me know that the baseball community has lost a member. Jeff "Howie" Howenstine has passed away. I don't have any details on funeral arrangements or anything but as soon as anyone knows please post on here so that we can show our support for the Howenstine family and the Haugen Knights. Jeff was a great guy and will be missed.

Howie was quite a guy, and we should definitely show our support. Flowers are here and gone, so what if we asked the Knights if we could have a plaque made for Howie as a memorial to be put up somewhere at the Haugen ball park. What do you all think of the idea, and if interested how about some input as to what the plaque should read.

I love the idea. Not sure as to what it should say yet, but I think we're looking in the right direction.

The idea is to have a small plaque about 8"X8" or so with an inspirational quote or a "Howie-ism" inscribed in it to be mounted on a bleacher or the concession stand at Haugen. An example would be: "Always play a game with somebody, never against them. Always win a game, never beat an opponent." or a Howie-ism: "When your as great as I am, it's hard to be humble." Many of you knew Howie better than I did so if you could think of any Howie-ism or quote please reply. A few other quotes to consider. "Never bend your head, always hold it high, look the world right in the eye." "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." "Sports do not build character, they reveal it." "I never said most of the things I said."(Howie sounding like Yogi) and one more- "It's not what happens to you that determines how far you will go in life. It's how you handle what happens to you." Help me out guy's if your interested in this kind of a tribute to a brother of this greatest game.

me again, I checked on the cost of such a tribute. we can get a 10x12 black marble plaque that can be mounted any where inside or out, engraved with what ever we want for somewhere around $55. I'm still waiting for any input even a yes or no would help.

I've heard (unconfirmed) a member of Howie's family is over seas at this time, and that there won't be any type of service till after thanksgiving. Another suggestion for a plaque, something simple like Thanks for your dedication and friendship. Still waiting for any suggestions or even a yes or no.

O.K. Brunclik family, let me join the conversation. What a great idea!!! I think those that were his age or know him a little better could give us an idea, as to what the plaque should say. Jeremy knows him pretty well, if your out there Jeremy, let us know!!! A great tribute to a man that really gave his all toward Haugen Baseball. He will be missed!

Big Bear! Good to hear from ya. Just an update, the latest word I've gotten is that there will be a wake from 1-4 on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the 28th. The funeral is to be held directly after, at 4 at Bethany.

What a guy Howie is. I just saw Howie at Culvers the other day and he was by himself. I had him come and sit with me and the boys to eat. We had great conversation and he really showed more than ever before (to me) how much he cared for EVERYONE in the baseball community. I will sure miss him and I didn't even know him that long. Johnny, I like the quote of being humble, it would make people laugh, which sure reminds me of Howie. Anyway, take care everyone, it will be good to see you all again.

I'm all for a plaque. I know Jay and Barno would be all for it as well. I like something that will be around for years to come.

The plaque idea is a good idea...just another idea..I checked on patches for our jerseys. Possibly his number. That would cost us $2 each to have them made and stitched on. Just another idea.
