| Guys, I have informed UIC Dave McLean and the Executive that I will not be returning to full-time umpiring next year, so I wanted to send a note of thanks to the USPL and all its members. I’ve had a lot of good fun and memories during my 5 years of umpiring for the league, but in 2009, I plan to focus more on my business and my family. In addition, I’m hoping to play as often as I can in the new Monday Masters Division.
Over these past few years, having come from being a smart-ass player on the diamond, I have gained new-found respect for officiating. For those of you who assume it’s easy, you need to re-think the idea. It’s the only job where you need to start out perfect, and then improve as the game goes on. It is both mentally and physically tough. So if you run into a guy who’s a little grumpy behind the plate, or isn’t in the perfect position to make a call, cut him some slack. Or try officiating yourself... you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Have a terrific winter. Some of you, I’ll see at the park when the new division starts up in May 2009. For others, there’s no doubt I’ll probably work the occasional game as a ‘spare’ umpire, so be on the lookout.
All the best, and thanks again. Jim_the_Former_Ump

| From one "smartass player" to a reformed one, thanks for doing such a great job over the years. You were always a true professional and also kept it fun on the field. Good luck in the Masters Division, and enjoy the time with your family. See you around the park!
