I have to say that this was one of the toughest votes I ever had to cast.
On the one hand it is way beyond hypocrisy for a league who has, in just about every instance, allowed players whom have left the league to return. Derek is a great guy and he is in a sense being punished due to Artie's unpopular status at present. To me we have showed that we are all about popularity and not about doing the right thing. If past practice dictated that we allow him to play minus the exempt status then that is what should have done.
This is why we have to do some serious work on the rules in the off season, because past practice becomes rule if not adressed with a by-law to fix it.
On the other hand...the league had to draw the line somewhere. When does violating it's own rules stop. We allowed Diambra and Knight to come back despite the rules clearly stating that they could not. Everyone liked Phil and Chris so they allowed them to slip in under the radar and I'm certain everyone likes Derek as well but it's a huge FUCK ARTIE sentiment that is going around right now and thus the vote reflected that.
We can't operate like that in the future and the line has been drawn now, under no circumstances can we ever allow a player to come back under any circumstances now that we have taken this posture. It will be placed in the by-laws now, so if anyone else has such a proposal in the future...don't even ask because the answer is NO!

mert i disagree with you on the chris knight topic, he moved to florida for work reasons i believe, and that is why we let him back in the league. lessard was right here in rhode island umpiring sunday mornings thats why i voted no nothing to do with artie at all. lessard could of played but choose not too. i think phil was some kind of injury shit,i believe we found out later he played in another league while he was supposedly injuried.

Either way it turned out, something needed to be done about players who took a season or two off for whatever reason and then coming back as exempt or non exempt. I voted not because it was Artie but because Mert's right, time for this to end because next thing you know someone's going to try to stack their team using this to their advantage.

I dont see how making Lessard exempt hurts Lessard. He can still play. It hurts VFW getting another player..yeah..but it doesnt hurt Lessard at all. Unless you call being handcuffed to Artie for 3 seasons punishment. Hoepfully the vote against Lessard wasnt really a vote against Artie. Although, the reason I pulled my team in 2006 was that the league voted and allowed artie 14 exempt players. You cant blame the devil for still trying

I dont have a problem with how the vote went and really wouldnt have cared if it went the other way even though in my opinion that would be voting against the by laws..so then in that case why even have by laws? As long as these things are reviewed intelligently and voted upon nobody can ever complain. I can tell you that even though the vote didnt go his way artie isnt sour..he sincerely believes that Lessard ..or aybody in a similar position as Lessard...is entitled to at least a little extra consideration. Essentially if you left the league for any reason and you come back a year or two later, if you are playing anywhere else you would have to be an exempt player...period. If you don't play anywhere else then it doesn't matter.
