| Despite a few setbacks and a last minute change in fields, the GCFFA's Spring League settled in today at New Britians Hungerford Park. Excellent field conditions and even better weather set the stage for three marquee match-ups between this years most dominating teams.
GAME 1.........#2 GATORS vs #3 YOUNG GUNZ
I'm not sure if it was the 2 regular season losses at the hands of the GATORS or possibly a home field advantage, but the local's came ready to play. Despite 2 sacks by GATORS NG Jimmy, the GUNZ drove down the field behind the legs of RB Eric Elliot and 2 perfect strikes from Bam to Pito, 1 a 7yd scoring pass to put the GUNZ up 8-0 early. Both defenses took control from there as YOUNG GUNZ constant pressure didn't allow the GATORS offense any breathing room. Led by DE Hamp Watson's 3 sacks of the GUNZ and great flag grabbing by the GATORS team the score remained 8-0 until the last 4 minutes of the game. After forcing a turnover on downs, the GUNZ went back to the ground game and moved down to the GATOR 10 yd line, where Bam hit Pito on a screen play that left 3 defenders on the ground and Pito in the endzone......... FINAL: 14-0 YOUNG GUNZ
GAME 2...........#1 BULLDOGS vs #4 KNIGHTS
The leagues 2 most potent offenses squared off in a game that shocked all who were in attendance. The KNIGHTS spent their off week coming up with the perfect game plan to unseat the 10-0 BULLDOGS. The KNIGHTS defense had 8 sacks led by DE Chad and former Defensive POY Dan Patterson, who combined for 5 and suffocating pressure on what seemed like every play. KNIGHTS QB Ish connected on TD passes of 34yds(Gary Coles) and 22yds(Steve Angeletta) and Angelletta returned an interception 84 yards as the KNIGHTS won in dominating fashion.............. FINAL: 26-0 KNIGHTS
THE CHAMPIONSHIP...........#3 YOUNG GUNZ vs #4 KNIGHTS
Familiar foes and long time rivals squared off in the finale of what was a classic championship game. The GUNZ went straight to business as usually on the opening drive with a steady dose of the ground game ending in a 32 yd scoring run by Eric Elliot. After starting off hot with a 33yd strike to Angelleta, The next pass was intercepted by YOUNG GUNZ #34, giving the ball back to the GUNZ ground game....9 plays and a controversial Pass interference call set up a 26 yd field goal that put the GUNZ ahead 9-0. Most teams would have begun to self destruct at this point, but the KNIGHTS responded with a two play 80 yd scoring drive highlighted by a 75 yd pass and catch from Ish to Gary Coles. The teams swapped interceptions after that closing the half at 9-7. The second half was a different story as the KNIGHTS could not put together a complete drive and the GUNZ defense turned up the heat. After a Stephen Jackson INT, Bam connected with Pito on an 81 yd scoring strike to push the lead to 17-7. Two stalled drive later and that was it........the YOUNG GUNZ took their 2nd consecutive Spring League title.
FINAL: 17-7 YOUNG GUNZ
Offensive MVP: Bam, QB YOUNG GUNZ
Defensive MVP: Hamp Watson, DE YOUNG GUNZ
Player of the Day: Eric Elliot, RB YOUNG GUNZ
I want to Congratulate the YOUNG GUNZ on there championship, it was tough fought and hard earned!
