| I know we've talked at the meetings a couple of times this year about consistently having one umpire at games. Once again we only had one umpire yesterday at a game with playoff implications on the line. I think I've had 2 umpires once in the last 2 months which is bullshit. I understand that alot of the umps in u-trip are also tournament players but that shouldn't mean us as a league should suffer from it. The one umpire is still doing a good job, better than 2 ASA umpires but something needs to be done or said to come to some sort of compromise.

| I'd also like to add that I apologize to the umpire at washington oak, for some comments made in frustration. He did try to do the best he could do, given what he had. I understand there is no possible way to get into position to make every call. It is not fair to the umpire or the team involved to be short handed. This isn't meant to be a blast at Smitty or anyone else, but their should be logical explanation to solve this issue. Fact of the matter a bad call would be easier to swallow if their was a second umpire in a better position, at least you know that they put there best foot foward.

| We have had one umpire three times this year, no that it mattered one way or another but...when we first went to USSSA they were very good with the umpires and there were always two there, now that we are a couple years in the umpire shortages seem to be more frequent.

| Some of the umpires can handle being alone and some can't. Artie maybe they can work to put the better umpires alone and the not so good ones with someone else. Im sure they know who is better than who.

| A lot of the issue is that this league is getting a very bad reputation for bitching and moaning way too much. I can understand why some get frustrated but we are not helping the umpire situation by complaining constantly during the game and yelling at umpires. The more we make it suck for the umpires the more we will see one man crews. I have heard from 2 seperate umpires that our Sunday morning league is getting worse and worse week to week. The two umpires that said this to me are probably the two best that work our Sunday morning games. As Dionne said I will take any 1 USSSA ump over 2 ASA umps, but the more we yell at umps during the game about calls the more we just hurt ourselves. That being said there are two umpires that do not belong anywhere near a softball field with the ump uniform on. There is the black umpire that is about 350 lbs and looks like an offensive lineman. That guy fuckin stinks on ice. He don't move and blew at least 5 calls. He never moved from second base and wouldnt even switch with the other umpire after the first game because he never left that spot. I swear that motherfucker grew roots out there. The other is a little bald guy that told Broz that he couldn't carry his jock to the field as soon as our games were over. That guy was as unprofessional as they come. Eddie has his name and will be bringing it up at the next meeting.

| I am not on either side here. Unfortunately, I am right in the middle. I hear and understand the players side of some arguments. I also see the umpires side of some arguments.
1. Several umpires read our message board, critical is one thing but insulting is another. Please keep that in mind.
2. We are gaining a reputation with some of the umpires as Ernie said. It is a job for them. You hate the person that you work with who complains all the time, so you can understand how the umpires feel. Also, you do not get everything you do at work right 100% of the time. We rarely tell them they do a good job.
3. I have never seen an umpire that gets yelled at or insulted change his or her mind about the call in question. Show some respect and calmly ask for an appeal or for them to check with the other umpire (if there is one).
4. As far as teams having one umpire, it has happened more than it should have this season and I am very disappointed. I am going to be calling the director, Rick Sousa, this week to discuss the rest of the season, the playoffs, and Fall Ball.

| WAAHHHHHHHHH. WTF! We bitched for years about ASA umps so we switched. Now we bitch about USSSA umps. There is a reason they are not umping in the big leagues. They are going to get some calls wrong and yes some guys are worse than others. Most of these guys are players or former players trying to pick up a few extra bucks on the side. And Ian makes a great point. They are not going to change their mind because YOU yelled at them. All you can ask for is that they are fucking up both ways so at least its consistant and no one is playing favorites. As far as not hustling to be in position to make a call..... well I can't defend that. That is a legit gripe. Make the effort and if you fuck it up then so be it.

THESE GUYS ARE STILL BETTER THAN ASA UMPIRES. GO TO ATWOOD ON SUN , MON , WED, AND THURS AND WATCH A GAME AND U MIGHT REMEMBER HOW BAD THEY WERE!!!!

| We will never hear the end of this argument, that was 2005 and nearly 5 years later he is still bitching about it. Ernie for a guy who doesn't bitch about calls, going on 5 years and still bitching about a call is pretty scary. You might want to consult some professional help on that chief.
"I play in the B's" I can't even say hi to the PNA guys now when I see them at tourneys...there is no way I could ever be doubled up....blah blah fucking blah."

| Getting back to the umpire situation, my only problem is once again we are getting shorted and we wee told that this would not happen and if it did it would be RARE...well it is not rare, it has become more and more frequent.
That is not what was agreed to in the beginning.
As far as the bitching and whinning goes, it goes both ways, I agree it is pretty silly to cry about calls it isn't going to change anything, and umpires (believe or not) are human and by definition fallible and are prone to make mistakes.
Having said that much, the umpires also need to grow thicker skin. Much like my job, if I went and pouted everytime and inmate called me a name that would be an indicator that I needed to find other work. Same with umpires, they need to understand that guys are going to bitch about calls...it comes with the territory.
I never argue calls, I think I have bitched once in all the years I managed due to a really moronic call and that wasn't directly at the umpire it was more under my breath on the bench. I just don't see the need for it.
So Ernie stop crying like a school girl with a skinned knee.

| We def have had only one ump for the majority of the season and most of the time they do a decent enough job. We usually get Bobbie and he is a great ump. Its tough to make all the calls by yourself so i don't see the need to argue. Certain things will be missed i know the guys this weekend wern't happy with who we had becuase he seemed to miss the calls that he would have had to make if there was another guy.
In the heat of the moment guys get crazy but thats part of the game. Its that way in all levels.
Let them read the board if they don't like what they hear maybe they should do a better job. The guys that are good umps im sure are not worried about what we have to say. They know they are doing their job right and that we arn't talking about them.

| TO All, I'd like to apologize for our Association not being able to fill the committment of 2 Umpires on a regular basis. Unfortunately it comes down to an Individuals availability, I have 36 umpires that we use and unfortunately Sunday Mornings Availability is a little more than half and not every week. We also do a Somerset Sunday League that we have 4 fields that require 1 Umpire as well as a Bristol Co-Ed that wants 2 and I told them we could only send 1 umpire. I have emailed as well as called Ian to tell him that we would only have 1 guy on so many fields on many occasions like this morning. I try to be as Up front about it as possible. Almost every guy drives from the East Bay and Southeaston Mass. I have spoken to All Umpires about the complaints and hopefully things have and will get better. I expect every Umpire to to give there best game every game. We DO make mistakes, as long as we can learn from them and get better. I have concerns that I brought up with Ian also and he hopefully work on those things. I DO NOT have any or many of these problems At All in Other Leagues and we do 10 Leagues from Sun. thru Fri.

| you know, not for nothing, but we have 7 fields with 8 games, being double headers, which the 12 oclock games are done by the same 2 umps every week, so if my math is correct, that means to have 2 umps at each field rick would need to supply 14 umps to coventry sunday mornings. on the averege this year he has supplied us with 9 or fewer umps each week, that is fucking terrible. i dont care how good of an ump you are it is impossible to be in two places at the same time. yesterday we had gino who is a great ump and he still cant be in two places at the same time and missed more then 4 calls on guys leaving early, getting under tags and totally missing bases because he was trying to be somewhere else on the field to make a call and to his defense, he just cant watch plays behind the one he is calling, and ofcourse, who the fuck are you going to appeal to, someone in the stands? i tryed to stay quiet on this subject but when i hear rick use words like professional it kinda rubs me the wrong way because i think the professional thing to do is not commit to a 16 team league if you dont have the help. if all your guys are east bay and you have all the other leagues to tend to on sundays then why the hell did you commit to our league when you know you cant accomodate us with the proper umpires. i dont care what anyone says playing a game with one ump sucks cock, there is always a judgement call issuew and 9 times out of ten the wrong call is made and its fucking frustrating as hell because with 2 umps the rite call would have been made. nothing against you at all rick, im just saying what everyone is thinking and it just doesnt seem fair ty coventry players that we arnt getting what we asked for and you assured us we would have.

| And I'd say we pretty much Did last year and I understand your concerns but if you wanna talk about find a better way or approach me yourself instead of being a hero on the Board. I cannot do anything about everyones availablity which is different year to year. Last year some guys played on different weekend teams and were more available and now alot are playing on the same teams and playing many sundays which has created problems for me & I have more Umps than last year. As for the other leagues, the guys that go there usually have to be some where for 12 or so and those leagues start at 9 and are local, those umpires would never travel to Coventry anyway if they have a committment w/ family or whatever. I've even tried to user guys from the other USSSA Assoc. and they can't supply any. I've been upfront about this as much as possible so I'm not disregarding it. I've also turned down 2 other leagues that wanted 1 umpire at fields.
