| Three out of my five favorite baseball players play for the Yankees, but I hate the Yankees more than ever this morning.
The three players are A-Rod, Texeira, and Swisher.

| Are you kidding me!?!?! Swisher is sooo cool, he goes to the ball park in a great mood everyday I hear, I saw a thing on him that he responds "F-ing great" just about everyday he is asked how is it going today. Plus he is a fired up player just like you and me.

| He always looks so smug and cocky. I don't know much about him but just from looking at him I've always disliked Swisher. I may be crazy and probably completely judging the book by its cover, but I just know that I've had a negative reaction just to seeing Swisher for years.

| The position does require a bit of swagger, I will say that. But some of us pull it off a little better than others. Colin goes with more of a confused vibe, rare, but effective.

| How is this argument about Swisher??? Now I have to dislike both Kirby and Frank for saying that they like A-Roid and Big Tex.
Both did the most disgusting thing in taking the absolute most money they could to sign with the most hated franchise in all of baseball. I don't want to hear the argument about making as much as possible. They both would have plenty of money signing elsewhere. It's like saying you wish the jackpot would have been a little bit higher right after winning a $100 million powerball drawing.

| Or it is like saying "I am the best player in the league (A-Rod) and the 2nd best first baseman (behind Pujols) and want to play for somebody who will put a winner on the field" IF you were the best banker who brought in business and grew the bank to 300 million in Rice Lake, you would want to be paid like that too!!!

| I've tried to type a response to you Money Mman, but I can't do it without writing a Kirby-like thesis paper on why I hate the Yankees. So I'll simply leave it at this:
I HATE THE YANKEES! I HATE THE YANKEES! I HATE THE YANKEES!
(I know, kind of like a 2 yr old throwing a tantrum, but I think it about sums it up.)

| It wasn't the smartest play but his aggressiveness is what make's him good. If the center fielder bobbles that ball for a second and he gets third because he was being aggressive then he's a genius, if he slips and ends the inning, he's the goat. I know I've made some stupid baserunning mistakes in my day, but there have also been times where those potential stupid mistakes have helped win games.
As for his 11th inning at-bat, yeah, Gomez doesn't have many smart at-bats, i'll give you that

| Back to the A-Rod and Tex taking big money thing. It's not just the money, they get to play in one of the most ridiculous ballparks in the country, filled with fans who care A TON about baseball.
Obviously money is a huge factor, but getting to play on that huge stage every night would be pretty sweet too. I mean, is it more fun to play in Siren at noon on Sunday, or to play a Haugen/Brill game under the lights or on a Sunday afternoon with a packed ballpark.
Holler.

But Frank, I'm with you on Swisher, I think he'd be a fun guy to have on your team. There's something to say about having that confidence and swagger in your clubhouse. Seems like the guy loves to play the game.

| I can see your point about playing for a contender in a town where people care about baseball on the A-Rod front. He was in TX and they didn't have the best team and the fans weren't that great. They may have been able to put together more of a contender if A-Rod wasn't taking up $25M a year, but that's a different argument.
As for Tex though, he played in Anaheim, a team that has been making the playoffs for years, have a super knowledgeable fan base who cares a ton, and have a pretty big budget to spend if you're not demanding absolute top dollar. I think it comes down to a bit of greed for him and his agent.

| I think sometimes we get fixated on the money for what it can buy as the reason these guys take the most money. But I think they use it as a way to keep score with each other. To reach the major leagues you not only have to be supremely talented but also extremely competitve. And I think they view the dollars as a way to measure themselves against other players. I hate when they say, "It's not about the money." It IS about the money, but not in the way we think. What they should say is, "It's not about what I can buy with the money, but where I stack up with my peers."
I still don't like the Yankees, but not because of their players. I don't like their fans. They feel it's their birthright to have championship teams every year. They never really earn their fan stripes, so to speak. I would like to see them have to suffer through watching Paul Sorrento and Ron Coomer batting in third and fourth holes or watching David West blow up in the seventh inning or having to endure LaTroy Hawkins as their closer.

| I can see the argument about the money meaning a ranking of skill. But many of the truly great players are recognized despite not having the most money. If salary was the only true rank of a player, that would mean that Johnny Damon is considered by baseball to be a better player than Joe Mauer, and I don't think anyone is going to take on that argument for Johnny. Guys like Pujols and Mauer are more worried about a championship than they are about the money. And because they're men of high character, they would prefer to do that with the team they've build a relationship with instead of jumping ship for top dollar for the highest likelihood of a championship right away.
Truly great players will be recognized for their skill, if anything the super high salary puts a target on your back for people to say you're overrated. People quickly see through the salary as a marking of how good you are. Last year when the Rays were matching up w/ the Yankees they went through position by position and showed that in many cases the Rays had better or equal players for less than half the salary of their Yankee counterparts at the same positions.

| From an outsider's perspective Kirby, I absolutely agree with you, good players are good players regardless of what their salary is. But that doesn't mean that a lot of the players making those huge salaries don't use it as a benchmark.
It's yet another way to compete with your peers. I know that every sport I've ever played at any level, I'm always comparing myself to those I play with and against to see where I stack up. For the pros making huge money, salary is yet another way to do that.
Quantity of eye black worn per game is another.

| In light of yesterday's highlights of the Brewers game I had to dig in the archives and talk more crap about Gomez and his lack of baserunning skills.
Get this, base hit to right center with GOMEZ' speed on first. He gets to second and starts looking over his shoulder at the fielder on his way to third...thrown out on a bang bang play. The kid seems like he will never learn to run the bases despite his speed.
