Who would like to play?

I wasn't impressed with wood softball bats, but was thinking that we could use wood baseball bats.

If I get enough interest I would start a low-cost trial league, and would even supply some bats to begin.

Awesome. Give It A Ride would sign up. What night and where?

What do you think about eliminating the unlimited arc and make it 1-1 w/ a 6-12 ft. arc for wood bats?

If it is a success, I think you should do a co-ed league spin off where the girls can use any bats (Miken Ultra II's included) but the guys can only use wood softball bats. You could eliminate the co-ed line. "A Wonder Woman/Clark Kent league". It would be awesome to see the girls bombing at Eva Dell while the guys struggle to get it to the fence. Safe, fun, exciting!

Sorry about that last link for Superior Wood Softball Bats. Try this one, it should work. Anyhow, those are a few places you can find wood softball bats. I think the local rep. for Phoenix lives in Carlsbad, so you might be able to pick up a bat if you are willing to go to the beach for the day. I have a Superior and a Rawlings Big Stick. The difference in performance between them is negligible. Swinging as hard as I can, I can barely get it to the fence at eva dell. I am excited about the challenge of playing in a wood bat league. Keep us posted!

Seems to be a popular idea. It would be an innovative format. My wife would need a new bat. lol.

Men's wood only would be cool too though and possibly easier to field enough teams initially. If it's successful, I think the co-ed wood-men/ultra- women format should be developed.

Set a date, start collecting entry fees. Make sure we pick up some harder balls. Wood bat, harder ball, and little tiny eva dell field all seem like a great match-up. Wood bat tourneys are growing in popularity it would be nice to be able to have a practice league to get used to them before going down and playing in the tourney's.

Wow. I hadn't checked this in a while.
1. Yes, I've always liked the idea of wood bats for men and metal for women in coed.
2. Yes, I like the idea of a limited arc for wood bats.
3. OK, I'm just now working on the Spring Rec Pages, would you like to see us offer wood bat options on many nights, or pick a few to start? I was planning on offering a financial incentive to start these leagues (reduced team registration at first)

I'll make a poll on the Home Page.

I voted for one night to start, and go from there. I don't think its necessary for women to be able to use whatever, but from what I've seen out on the fields, I am probably in the minority.
So let's do it!

I'm curious why you think we need to juice up the ball with a wood bat? I'd hate to cancel out the one of the advantages of switching to wood bats.

The soft cushy core of the .44 balls and the give of a wood bat do not mesh well. The ball will rarely fly past the co-ed line at evadell. We want to eliminate the shaved bat influence not make Randy Johnson V. Pedro Martinez in there primes type games. In addition, sanctioned wood bat tourney use .47 balls. It would be nice to get to play as a team in league and get the same type of tourney feel.
I would volunteer our team (Give it a ride) and could probably guarantee Flyright as well. Were planning on playing Thursdays this next season.

I think you have to have a men wood bat league atleast and if you get enough coed teams that are interested then thats fine. The main reason i want a wood bat league is to put everyone on the same playing field, not people using shaved bats so they can feel powerful.

Why to use decent balls: because 95% of the guys who can hit the ball over 300 feet will still not be able to hit it over the fence at Eva Dell with wood, even with those decent balls, I bet you see maybe 1 home run a night during all 3 games on a field, if that. The balls are going to stay in play and in use longer so they need to be better. Your ball expenses will still go down. Even using said new, decent balls, I have yet to see anyone on my team get it farther than to the fence at eva dell. In fact, I've only see one guy up here ever do it.

Don't forget about regular 6-12ft. arc.! You don't need unlimited arc w/ wood, even at eva dell.

It's a great start...

whats up doug, should I buy a new wood bat for thursday mens next season. We had one, but it slipped out of my hand, flew over the dugout, hit a tree, and shattered. One round of BP, 26 balls, only two over the fence. Wood=level playing field. Home run is a legit shot and will be few and far between, even with a harder ball.

Attention all Thursday night softball teams! Give It A Ride is throwing down the gauntlet. We will be bringing wood softball bats to share if you take the challenge. We want to invite any Thursday night teams who are interested to agree to have both teams put away the composites, and play with wood softball bats AND a hitter friendly 6-10 ft. pitch height limit.

Not interested? No worries. We can just as easily play the game with composites and UNlimited arc. Just thought it might be fun to get a head start on the rumored Spring Wood Bat Season at Eva Dell.

If your team is interested, let us know who you are so we have something to look forward to on the schedule. We'll also have to get the umpire to agree to call our game that way- it shouldn't be a problem though. Thanks and have a great season.

We played this last Thursday with those rules and wood bats, it was a lot of fun but is there going to be an actual wood bat league or no? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

VV Parks Office says Dave is out of town until April 1st when the league is supposed to start. Anyone know what's up? Do we have a wood division on Thursdays? Said we would at the manager's meeting but an umpire and a city employee have told me (unsolicited) that they didn't think it would happen. If anyone knows anything, please post.
