| The tournament went really well. We ended up getting it all in in one day.
The championship was the Hitmen from the SEMO area and DuQuoin with (you guessed it) guys from DuQuoin and Marion. It was literally back and forth the whole game. At least 1 time during the game, both teams were up by double digits and the other team came back and took a lead.
We got done at 1am, without the police showing up, with a final score of 45-44. Pretty nuts.
The Diamond Busters and the SEMO Hustlers both got 3rd in 2 really good semifinal games.
Hope everyone had a good time. I plan on having another one in May and hopefully we'll have enough teams step up so that we can have an upper and a lower division.
One last thing. We had a collision between 2 players and there was an argument on what the call should have been. I just wanted to post what I said and how it reflects what the rules say. Guys who are umpiring don't always get it right, but they try to. They definately don't want to call someone safe if they're out because that would just prolong how long they're out there umping.
"Sec. 12 CATCH: A catch is a legally caught ball that occurs when a fielder secures a batted or thrown ball with his/her hand or glove. If the ball is merely held in the fielder’s arms, or prevented from dropping to the ground by some part of the fielder’s body or clothing, the catch is not complete until the ball is in the grasp of the fielder’s hand or glove. It is not a catch if a fielder, immediately after he/she contacts the ball, collides with another player, or wall (fence), or falls to the ground and drops the ball as a result of the collision or falling to the ground. In establishing a valid catch, the fielder shall have complete control of the ball, and his/her release of the ball is voluntary and intentional. If a player drops the ball while in the act of throwing, it is a valid catch. NOTE: An intentional dropped ball is a ball that has first been caught, by the definition of a catch, and is then intentionally dropped in an attempt to confuse or obtain additional outs. EFFECT: The ball is dead, the batter- baserunner is called out, and all other runners are protected under the obstruction rule."
