| Hey guys,
For those that don't know me, my name is Matt Mallette and I play for Patriot Oil (soon to be changed). As some of you may know, our roster has changed by losing some veterans thus creating a couple holes.
I'm not going to air out my friend's dirty laundry however Adam Silvia's exemption status has come into question.
Here's the scoop:
He played every game last year up until 1 where he had to leave early due to his daughter's 1st birthday party and that would have been his 16th game. Later that week, he had faced some legal issues which prevented him to participate in any other future games for the remainder of the season.
Based on our issues to fill our roster up (especially with exemption rules with guys in other leagues) we are requesting an exception for Adam for his exempt tag to be *10 to open up 2 roster spots for us.
I've heard of the woes that came along with last years move of the new team and I know that injured players have been granted the request also. Based on the fact that it was uncontrollable, we are asking that if it comes down to a vote to allow Adam's status of exemption to remain for 2010.
If anyone has questions and you don't have my number, email me at guvna14@hotmail.com.
Thanks everyone...and Happy New Year!

| Thanks to those that have contacted me. It has come to my attention that Adam will still have the 2011 tag on him however we are still eligible for 2 more exempt players (3 total with 2011 exempt tags this year). Adam's commitment will still remain with Patriot for 3 more years.
Thank you again to those whom clarified the rules for me.

| The player will need to be marked exempt for this year. *11 and count as one of your exempts this year (only 2).
Paraphrasing.... The reason for this is because any player that does not fulfill his obligations to the league will be considered a new player.
Since he was marked exempt and didn't play in 16 games, he is a new player.
Once an exempt completes their first year, then we just change the exempt number and do not count it towards total team exempts for the year.
Example: If I was exempt last year Smith*10 and played in 18 games, I would have met requirements. This year I don't play at all. I still owe my team two years so when I return in 2012 I will be marked Smith*11 to signify I have completed one year and 2012 is year two in my obligations to the team.

| Alright Dictator, here's my 2 cents for a Sunday morning rec league....not the MLB.
Although I respect the by-laws, they're obsolete due to the fact that how much RI softball exploded over the last 5-8 years and leagues around here have tripled since 2002 and before. It was one thing when only the high quality players played in more than one league and there were about 4 travel teams represented from RI (1-A 2-B and 1-C)...since then in the E's alone for travel, 162 teams were registered last year (just in the E's)...now granted there are a bunch of duplicate managers and rosters based on what charity tournaments that other players were allowed to play on and those teams were forced to register. Still, active E travel teams were over 50 last year….add in the D’s and C’s and you’re well over 70. Also, the by-laws may have applied to spread the talent in 1992 but not in 2010-2011 with the pool of talent that is currently in RI.
We're not trying to bust balls and we're certainly not a stacked team trying to run out the league...we lost 5 guys and when trying to replace them and its near impossible to find someone that doesn't play in a league that actually has a clue how to play. So soaking up a spot from a guy that attended every week until his misfortune and standing your ground as “this is the way it is” seems unreasonable. If he got injured, would the same rules apply? How about military deployment? Car accident? Temporary job move?
If the buck stops with you Smitty, than you got it all wrong...there are too many quality leagues around here without exemption rules. If it goes to a vote and we get shut down, so be it....but our request is neither outlandish nor audacious. By-laws are consistently adjusted in Northeast softball year to year throughout many leagues to the current times….Coventry’s rules should be also…this rule should either allow more new players per year, abolished altogether or voted for the exception for Adam….no teams are that stacked where this would create any 30-0 teams anyhow. That and although he’s a decent player, he only hit .500 last year…..we’re not trying to recruit Helmer or Bumgardner….
We’re hoping that the managers around our league will have enough sense to allow this exception to be granted so we can prevent any forfeits or not submitting a team altogether….another reliable softball player really does make that much of a difference to our roster. I would hate for it to come down to it, but we are not in the same position as we were last year and out of the 13 guys that we have, 4 of them attended less than 20 games….we have a real problem right now.
And lastly, just throwing this out there, but with the way it is, some teams run other teams off the field in 9 innings through 2 games….Any quality league with as many teams that we have has separate divisions and the same should occur here. A, B and a C league. A league plays A and B teams, B teams play A, B and C’s And C’s would play C’s and B’s. At that point, you can limit how many B and C teams can have A players (determined by the managers) in order to prevent the exemption rule from coming up in the future at all….and now the competition is heightened for everyone.

| Guvna I have read the by-laws and Ian's interpretation of the bylaws is accurate. Thats his job. Interpretation and enforcement. Now, you need to have the by laws changed. Or , employ any of Arties clever ways to circumvent the by laws.( Bribes, lose the scorebook, tank games to finish lower, purchase votes to chnage by laws to name a few) or, recruit eligible quality players from other teams. Hey, steal a couple from Crowe those roster robbing bastards. Hell, they stole Ians SPONSOR! Thats how you do it. Daren MacDonald sat out an entire twilight season to play with us, a sacrifice to play with champions. Matty , you have to understand, the exemption law gets challenged often and occasionally amended. Every year we realize that its a very very good rule. Also, we also have pressure to include as many Coventry residents as possible. I dont think this situation warrants an exception. Adam is a great great guy and a real plus to have in our league in my opinion. You have to pick your carefully. Amore only got 12 games in. Adam missed by one damn game...he played 15 of the 18 games that he was eligible for. Finally, all of your arguements are valid and well thought out... if redundant. We'vee been down this road before. Ask new guy Agador sit out.

| Rules 30 years ago don't apply to the modern game....there weren't over 3k players in Rhode Island 30 years ago.
We asked for an exception based on uncontrollable circumstances and you stood ground as to saying "that's the way it is". So, yes...absolutely I feel they should be challenged and/or ammended.
And we spoke about divisions....it's the right move (maybe not for this discussion, but it coincides for eliminating teams trying to stack up).

| A vigorous and lively debate.! Matthew, Ian is an elected steward of the league. He doesnt make unilateral decisions. Its Ians job to run the league as determined by the by laws that have been pieced together over years and years. He and Josh Jeff and Kevin and the Managers do a great job of running the league. Thats not even debatable. That said...the exempt rule seems antiquated..agreed. Having divisions seems logical....agreed. But you must know...these issues have come up many times in the past and ARE VOTED DOWN BY THE LEAGUE MANAGERS EVERY TIME. The second division playoff was a hit I think. I want to play Joe Machado. He aint good enough any longer to be on a top division team...I wont see the guy all summer for Christs sake if we go two divisions. I like Volpe and the Sham guys..I love Rob and the Stallions guys...Chris and the Firefighters..and for the record, Crowe used to be a 1 win team. And...we cant go into detail, but the gentleman in question certainly didnt suffer from circumstances " beyond his control". He missed by one game. But, the rule is the rule. You arent asking for much..but it is not Ians job to decide. Its his job to interpret the by law and enforce it. Matt, you have excellent ideas..I think that you should get your well thought out ideas down on paper, have Chip present them at a meeting, follow the procedure...maybe something happens. OR...sign 1 new exempt guy. Lets keep Smith happy and healthy and stress free.

| ...on another matter....Smitty always sounds like a douche. He talks funny and his texts and emails sound snarky and ....smug? Kinda. But, he aint...he's a minimalist. Belichek-esque. The fewest words possible with the least inflection. Brevity is the soul of wit.

| Nice check in Demonti.
Matt a few years ago, maybe 2006, the league voted to expand the exemption status to allow more. I am sure Generalissimo Smith will correct my errors here but I believe that the top 4 teams got no exempt players, 5-12 got 1, and the rest got 2. The league voted to expand that to it's current format. Military service, car accidents, and employment status do not apply to your case so they area poor use of examples. If any of those cases appiled I am sure the league would vote to allow the exemption.

| You said: "We asked for an exception based on uncontrollable circumstances and you stood ground as to saying 'that's the way it is'. So, yes...absolutely I feel they should be challenged and/or ammended."
I interpreted the rules for you. I have never once made a rule on my own. I have proposed rules that have been voted on and approved, but I have never made a rule on my own.
Also, if you are going to be a jackass about it, I did not type 'that's the way it is' so don't put quotes around it on two separate occasions saying that's what I said.
and further more..................
here's an email from Chip, your manager, on 12/29/10 Note the quotes because it's exactly what he wrote, except for the part in brackets I changed to protect the person in question. " skipdogger?77@aol.com

"Last year, as most of the league knows, [my player had a problem and had to stop playing]. My question is...Is he exempt '10 again this year??? Reason for asking is because he made every game except 1 vs you guys (because of his daughters b'day) and then he [was not able to play]. I was trying to go back to previous posts about the guy who got injured last year that was exempt and you said that it would not count against them, but I can not remember who that was or when that happened. I KNOW he did not fill his true exempt stature, so if he has to be exempt '11, I would understand. Thanks, Chip"

I DIDN'T SAY DON'T TRY TO GET A VOTE, BUT "I don't think you'll get a sympathy vote at a meeting." (those damn quotes again)
Even in the email, I didn't say 'that's the way it is' so don't try and make me look like Demonti, I mean an asshole.
was that smug and snarky?

| Hey Guvna, I have talked to Chip about this after Ian and him exchanged emails. Chip from what we talked about doesn't seem upset about this. I don't exactly know if the circumstances were "incontrollable" or not but they happened and he couldn't make his required games. It happens. Definitely should talk to El Presidente on the phone or in person if you feel so strongly about this. He's more than reasonable about listening to you. About making divisions in our league, it's been a concern to me and Smitty and I know I don't like it, just think there's alot of bullshit that would be surrounding it. I'm sure it will be discussed at the meeting.

I really wasn't that upset, just making my points emphatically because that's kinda who I am...you should know this. Tone is perceived in different ways when the text is on paper or a computer screen....When I was called a jackass, ya, that pissed me off. As president, there will be disputes and people won't always agree on rules/regs etc....cristicism is expected and needs to be absorbed without lashing out....that's what he signed up for. For him to start name calling...that was uncalled for....that was the only thing that I was upset about. It was a debate and he stepped out of bounds.
We'll move on cordially after I speak with him so this can be put to rest.

| its true. we talked everything is all set just the usual computer misunderstandings. its very difficult to interpret tone and intent.
i never addressed the division comments that were made and i understand why some teams in and out of the playoffs want two separate divisions.
i can not come up with a division set up that i feel would make everyone happy. so i have never proposed one. as birthdayboy4birthdayboy stated i personally like playing all of the teams in the league and not because of winning/losing/stats/etc. i like seeing them play every year and seeing all of the members of the league.
i told guv on the phone to send me his proposals and we can look at them. he is going to do that. the same thing for everyone else, if you have a plan for two divisions or the betterment of the league, please give me the plans and ill make sure you get the credit.
send all plans to imsmitty7@hotmail.com
