We came to an agreement in another league that I played in, that the batter only had to run to first and the baserunners could just walk to the dugout. Sounds good?

| My opionion may not be worth much considering I didn't even hit one last year, but if it's so easy to hit one out then why can't those same guys be forced to try to keep one in the park? Forcing someone to hit the ball in play encourages strategy and creates a play having to be made in the field.

Even though the executive has detemined that the league needs a +2 rule...you can't expect our "great" players to keep the ball in the park. They have to hit it out! It may adversely affect their world-class home run stroke.
So, why do we have a rule?

| It isn't a penalty! It's a reward!
The execs have determined that it is better for our league to limit the amount of home runs in order to speed up the games and to help in making the games more competitive for ALL. Mission accomplished!
Yet, this topic is still out there. Do we NEED to change the rule...NO!
However, it STILL makes no sense to REWARD a guy for hitting it where we, as a league, don't want him to do.
That's what we usually call a foul ball...

| You're so ignorant Woodsucks. The rule was created to speed the game up. In some leagues if a homerun is hit they just walk off the field and don't even go to first. Who created that rule? Guys that can't hit homeruns? Gimme a break. To be honest, I could care less if the rule is in place. I literally don't care either way. I only shared my opinion because as much as you think guys should be able to hit as many as they want I think those same - supposedly "strong" - hitters should be able to keep it in the park. Or should I be led to believe they are just so far superior that they can't help but pound the ball out of the humungous Crosby park?

| well said Burt.. woodsucks, that comment is bulls*%T
calling people weak because they don't hit it out of crosby is pathetic in my opinion, much more so than calling people pathetic that dont hit it out of crosby.
in my opinion the rule is in place to keep the game competitive and speed it up, not to have guys chase the ball because people cant do anything else but hit fly balls that are caught at almost any other park aside from carlton. but im sure you've been hitting JACKS far longer than i've been in the league.
i may be in the minority that thinks this rule is there to keep games close, and as the poll indicates it should stay the same if anything.
i guess you've never played a, b or c ball in a SPN tournament, where there is only a 2 homerun rule per game, period...guess all those ball players are pretty weak too when they actually have to find a hole in the defence to get on base..

| If the rule is intended to speed up the game why do we wait so long to start a new inning? Most outfielders take their sweet time walking out to the field, pitchers want to warmup and the infielders need to throw the ball around. Hitters take time getting into the box. It is all a waste of time. Ignorant people are more likely to believe they are brilliant, while intelligent people are more likely to underestimate themselves. Get rid of the one sided rule and let all HR hitters go back to the bench, they do not need to waste time going around the bases. Do all of the above and the precious time will not be wasted.

| How can a rule NOT work at Milliken? Very confused. Are you saying because Milliken isn't the child-sized diamond Crosby is people should be more deserving of a home run there?
In any case, the rule is either effective or it doesn't come into effect at all. It either speeds up the game by limiting the home runs by a team and the time it takes to get the ball, etc. or there is no impact the rule can't simply NOT work.
Has any game drastically been impacted by the home run rule or are you guys all just arguing for the sake of it? I mean, has there ever really been a situation where you guys have said "oh it's too bad we're +2....a double is really going to hurt us right now"? Chances are if people are swinging for the fences they're going to fly out anyway.

Obviously there are quite a few powerful hitters in this league watching 15 bombs go out over Crosby in a game is boring for everyone on the field. Make it an out and move the game along keeping both teams in the game. If you are 2+, put the ball in play, smash a line drive. I agree with the last poster, second best option would be a single.

| Just as a follow up, this is what I know about other leagues around our area (either from me umpiring in that league or in talking to other umpires): - Markham Men’s Slo-Pitch League (MMSPL): +2 HR Penalty: Strike - York Region Slo-Pitch League (YRMSPL): A Division +2 HR Penalty: Walk B/C/D Divisions: Max 4 HR’s Penalty: Out - Aurora Men’s Slo-Pitch League (AMSL): +2 HR Penalty: Out - Claremont Men’s Slo-Pitch League (CMSPL): +2 HR Penalty: Out
So to Gimme’s point, I’m not sure why players would think about leaving the USPL, as most other leagues have similar homerun limitation rules. Some are more penalizing than others, but I think our league rule is pretty fair.
(As a side note I heard about some leagues and associations in the US adopting an “Inning-Ending Out” as the penalty for hitting a HR if over the limit. You could be the first batter of an inning, but if you hit a HR when over the limit, your team is done for that inning. Now THAT seems a little harsh!)

To add to that, in pretty much all tournament ball the rules are also much harsher - you'd be hard pressed to find a league out there that REWARDS you for hitting a home run when you're already at the max.
The argument that people who like the new rule must be shitty hitters just cracks me up - all of the best hitters I know of in this league can hit the ball to all fields and hit a single just as easily as they can jack one over the fence.
If all you can do is pull can of corn fly balls that go out at Crosby, you deserve to be out. I'd say it's generous that we only give a strike instead. The rule hardly ever applies at Milliken anyway, so I really don't understand how people have such an issue with this rule change.

You are NOT supposed to hit a home run-when up by 2- so, that's a foul ball=strike!
Oh, and it doesn't matter-in our league-if it's your first or 3rd strike-it's still a strike! 3rd strike?-yeah, you're out!

| My question isn't if going middle is part of the game cause it is and I have no problem fielding my position that said. If a team says out right go box and they do and by chance you hit and hurt the pitcher, I think thats intent.
Now 2 things if you see it as intent then legally if someone got hurt would or could that playout in a lawsuit (not that I am thinking about that at all) and the other question is if you call it out and then do it isn't there some argument of intent to injure which is not tolerated in slow-pitch.

| You guys do realize that the theme of this thread is happy holidays not +2 rule?
Seriously - enough is enough.
I am happy to discuss this with people who want to put a name to their comments - as opposed to monikers they can hide behind. Matches, HR Leader, Knight, Canthit – Would be interested to know who you are so we can have a civil conversation about this all. I mean this in a nice and welcoming tone, not any sort of negative connotation.
Hitting it up the middle - to say the left of second base or the right of SS (from the hitter’s perspective) is part of the game." Shooting box" intentionally because you can't hit a lazy fly at Crosby is not.
I do not hit home runs, I wish I could, but there are plenty of guys that we play with, against, watch etc. that can hit HR's on command and do not.
WE have rules - they are there for a reason - every competitive or rec league in the world has rules, and like them or not, we abide by them. See note in the other thread posted recently by me. Threatening to hit a pitcher or shooting box or citing all power hitters are pull and when they can't hit a HR go middle is ridiculous and I refuse to accept that as a reason to not have an HR rule. Most of the best hitters in our league (there's a lot to chose from, I’m happy to make a list) can and do hit it everywhere (even HR’s at will), that's a main reason why they are always on base and their teams win.

| Do we really need to re-visit this AGAIN? The argument that we need this rule to protect weaker hitters is absolutely ludicrous. We need this rule to protect games from becoming snoozefests where half the team just hits home runs. If we want to talk about different rules for Crosby and Milliken that's one thing, but as long as the rules remain consistent it's a no-brainer that this rule has to stay.
I'm by no means a power hitter and I can hit it out of Crosby by accident (ex. leading off a game, when I certainly don't intend to do so). That's not bragging by any means, that's my way of stating how easy it is to hit a home run at Crosby - if I can do it, so can at least half the league (if not more). Do we really want to stand around in the field watching balls fly over our heads until the bottom of the order comes around?
If you're a good hitter, hit liners into the gaps or off the fence when your team is +2. It's not rocket science. The only thing this rule hurts is people's HR stats. Gimme a break already.

| We have the rule for many reasons.
1 - to keep games more competitive 2 - to keep games being played at a park this league and the talent within it has clearly outgrown 3 - Virtually every slo pitch league in the world has a similar one (most are more strict) 4 - because the league voted on it 5 - Great hitters can keep it in the park (ask the teams at the top of the standings)
This is always an issue with merit on both sides. Happy to discuss with anyone who puts a real name up so I know who I am addressing. But as a league, it has worked quite well so far.
As always, I advise and welcome all those who wish to change this rule to come to the AGM and voice your opinion. We allowed people to openly do so last year, which (for those who were there), actually yielded not a SINGLE VOTE in opposition of changing it.
Please, stop whining and complaining about a rule and do NOTHING ABOUT IT. If you do not like it, I suggest you get together with all others who hate it, are against it and live to launch balls out of Crosby and ALL show up. Willing to bet there will be less than 15 of you at the AGM.
$20 says I am right ..(no I am not betting with everyone, just the first person that steps up).
With respect for all USPL members, and with a heavy heart.

If guys want to change this rule, they need to do two things: a) Put on a name on your post so that we know who you are and maybe we can have a serious discussion. b) Show up at the AGM, argue your point, and let a vote happen.
Until then, please stop posting inane messages about how only wimps like this rule, or that it was created to make life difficult for the power hitters, or that it is just plain stupid. Please. Stop.
Thanks for letting me speak my mind.
Everyone have a safe and enjoyable playoffs.

| lol, the guys that complain about this rule are the ones that aren't good enough to play in other leagues, tournaments, or even provincials. most competitive leagues call the extra homeruns as an Out. the ones that complain about this rule most likely have no skill and can't play defense. Their only glory is that they are big, strong, and can only pull the ball.. Other than that, they're most likely no good at anything else, and thus their team has no use for them.. go play Co-ed, the ladies will be in awe of how far you can pull the ball.

We welcome all of our league members, especially those who continuously oppose our home run rule or other rules, to come out tonight and publicly address your concerns and put things to a vote.
Looking forward to seeing all of our members tonight! It is always nice to talk ball and have a beverage with those who make this such a great league.

You all had your chance to show up at the AGM, argue your point, and let a vote happen. You chose not to. In Ricky’s words, all that was heard at the meeting was...[crickets].
So for the next year (at least), please, no more posts on this rule. Give it a rest. Find another battle to fight.
