I understand being upset when you don't win, but to call out parents in that fashion is uncalled for. The rules of the league state that unless you finish in the top two at regionals, the league does not fund your trip to nationals. At that point it is up to the discretion of the parents involved. They did not sign a form at the beginning of all-stars stipulating an agreement to pay out of pocket for a trip to nationals, thus in no way are bound to do so. Any argument otherwise is a gross misinterpretation of the by-laws. But I really think that all of the arguments posted, while coming from what was perceived by the author as a possible growth experience, actually completely miss the point.

The goal of athletics is to prepare young children for life. To give them skills such as teamwork, work-ethic, tenacity, and competitiveness. It helps prepare them for the world and prepares them to succeed in the world. But an often over-looked skill, which is very much a part of sports, is the skill of loosing. Now some may argue that loosing is unacceptable and that kind of attitude breeds failure. But I speak not about the attitude but about the situation. Loosing is inevitable, at some point in sports and at some point in life you will "loose". This is not to say you prepare to fail, simply you accept the fact that losses happen. Learning how to handle a loss and grow and learn from it is what I see as the most important lesson to be taken from sports. It can be applied to every area of life and is often the difference between ultimate success and failure. Even the great "winners" throughout history lost at some point. In fact I argue that the greatest men and women throughout time suffered defeats prior to ultimate success and it was an ability to learn and grow from that experience that enabled the later successes.

This is the lesson to take from this, I am sure the girls played their hearts out, but at the end of the day they as a team did not meet the expectations needed for qualification to the next level. Why not, instead of bashing other parents and blaming it on many other things, take this time to teach your kids that it is how you pick yourself up from defeat that ultimately defines success.

The girls did qualify to move on. . . and it was expressed at a parent meeting that we would go on if we finished third. Those parents that disagreed had a chance to speak up then and didn't.

By the way, it's "losing", not "loosing".

sbparent - please grow up (don't waste your time spelling checking this) just read and realize

1. you missed a great teaching experience it goes like this: All-star, great season, way to put in the effort and work hard and practice and compete in these tournaments. We fell just short of advancing, so let's work on a few things as a team and come back next year and EARN IT.

2. instead of questioning the hearts of of the "3 coaches who voted opposite you" and the MVYBA's Board - look up the definitinon of a volunteer. You my friend are NEITHER.

3. next time - I fear with you there will be a next time - call a board member - they are posted on this website. Why go public? What exactly you feel the board is hiding is beyond me.

4. look around, you live in a small town our kids have the next 3-5-10 years to grow up togehter, to compete in UIL, band, softball, basketball etc etc TOGETHER - how about you let them know that we as a community EXPECT them to win and are there to SUPPORT them, comfort and congratulate them win or lose because they represented MV with class. Something they learned way back in Pinto All-Stars when they just MISSED advancing to nationals.

You blew you, but you have a chance to correct it right now.

"9. Each player selected to the All-Star team will go as far as they can go (1st and 2nd place teams mandatory) including National or Championship games. If the player does not advance with the team as far as they qualify then that player will not be eligible for All-Stars the following year."
(notice that the wording says that first and second place is mandatory, no guidelines are given for other places that have qualified.) This needs to be addressed by the board and placed on the committment form for All-Stars explaining how situations like this are going to be addressed and not just committments to working tournaments.

meant to type: you blew it...

and you are correct, the by-laws need to be changed - I'm sure the board will take that in to consideration this fall. They might even consider you wanting to be a VOLUNTEER and join them.

Thanks to your team and the actions you all took it is highly likely we won't have to worry about teams that don't place 1 or 2 advancing anymore.

Congrats, your public outburst successfully ruined it for everyone else.

I'm sure the chamber of commerce in Slidel or wherever Louisiana will love for you to vacation there this summer. Take your 6 closest friends, let everyone else enjoy their summer.

Sorry for the fall out.

But you can just tell all the "ruined it for others" this: "All-star, great season, way to put in the effort and work hard and practice and compete in these tournaments. We fell just short of advancing, so" let's work on a few things as a team and come back next year and EARN IT."

sbp congrats #1 is now covered - you are learning, good for you, you put that Error you made behind you and got ready for the next play

now address #2-4

we will see what type of model parent you are and whether or not you can teach your child some humility by showing your little all-star that even parents make mistakes in the heat of the moment put in the effort you did to hammer out your travesty post and track down those "3 coaches" / VOLUNTEERS and apologize to them - another great teaching moment that I hope you capitalize on

isn't youth sports wonderful?!!

You should let the girls play At nationals and board should help pay for there fees for pony and Shetland girls. We wear mv shirts and donate are time to conssesion, we do not get paid so there for its all the teams money. We all know that this is a once in a life time expirience and apportunity for the girls and me as a parent feel that I should support this girls in any way that I can and I think we should all in some way need to support this girls. In my personal opinion I think there has been favoritism and not handiling situations correctly similar to the one that's going on now. I think there should be some changes to the borada and board members. Thank you.
