All 3 teams have split playing each other, what's the fairest way to settle it? I hate the idea of a coin flip deciding it

I say we play a round robin playoff. If there is no clear winner then it goes to runs for and then runs against.
I would like to ask the rest of the league to postpone playoffs 1 week for this. I do believe this is also beneficial to other teams as well because of tournaments.
The other thing would be to start the games at 8 and then start the affected games at 11.
Let me know your opinions.

use a deck of cards with an ace and 2 matching cards.
Ace gets a bye other 2 play and then winner plays ace for seeding 8-10. 1st loser is 10 2nd is 9 and winner is 8.
Play games starting at 8am and playoffs start at 11 this week instead of taking the week off.
playing 4-5 games on Sunday is unfortunately the price of coming in a 3 way tie.
I only suggest this because some guys travel for worlds and if no rain outs the playoffs are over before any conflicts.

Just a thought

XXX. The CMSL will consist of sixteen (16) teams maximum. The top eight (8) teams will play in play-off games. First to play eighth, second to play seventh, third to play sixth, and forth to play fifth. Best record to be home first game, opponent to be home second game, then best record. After first round, best record plays worst record, seeded. In the event of a tie for eighth place, a one (1) game play-off will decide eighth place, to be played prior to play-off games. For a tie in any other position, head-to-head record will determine position. If teams in question split, a coin flip will determine top spot.

This is Rule 30 of our by-laws. Now I know it does NOT say anything about a 3 way tie, but I do however like Tuckers idea.

I like the idea of deciding it on the field. I also like the idea of playing it all on sunday AM. Tucks idea is the best that I have heard so far. Its two games. Winner of second game hustles over to Ravenwood .....play in game 1 starts at 8 am. That said...the league has superior leadership and they are certain to make a fair and equitable decision. All this ...just to win the honor of getting slaughtered by the greatest Coventry Softball Team ever assembled later that day.

Bobby, regardless of whoever comes out on top, the play-in game WILL have to be played at Ravenwood. Josh is not going to have his guys drive from field "X" to their home field. He is the Number 1 seed and has his choice of fields.

It would make sense to have the playoff at the site of Dionnes field choice. so only one team has to leave for the other field, thus saving time.

CHIPPER, Crowe doesnt want the play in game to played at their field. DOES NOT. While at first blush it Seems sensicial to have the play in game played at the #1 seed field of choice........Crowe has very good arguements for having the play in game played at a different field..then...winner driving to Raven and play Crowe. Im sure you guys will figure it out tonight.

This is true bob we don't want the game to played at raven wood just for the fact that our guys would like to get there hit some balls like every other Sunday morning game instead of getting there and the other team is already there and the umpire rushing us on the field

Rockstar,
You guys are so good you shouldn't neeed BP before the game.
The championship is yours just show up.
Seriously if playoffs were to start at 11 this week only, non issue. Games would be over by 1015 for teams to travel and for the almighty Crowe to take BP.

Ok tuck if that's how you see it. But why should we have games at our home field when every other game in that day doesn't and thier guys to get to warm up properly and we don't? Besides at the games at fish hill or Phillips hill and the travel time won't be as bad

Ricky,
I figured 45 mins was enough time to warm up properly.
The games have to be played somewhere. any other field would have the same argument.
If they start at 11 it's a non issue.

11am starts mean...

game 1 1100 - 1215
game 2 1220 - 135
game 3 145 - 300
AND THE HOTTEST PART OF THE DAY

beyond our field permits and not something that anyone in the league has planned for.

When someone's best player has to leave in game 2 or 3 for a baptism/birthday party/bbq/sox game/ etc.......how's that going to go?

I'll say it now and I'll say it at the meeting:

The best solution is all three flip a coin. The two the same play the play in game. The one different is the 10 seed.

I understand that solution affects/upsets one team.

A tournament affects/upsets 12 teams.

Maybe we could play on Saturday night and have the round robin like Matt is proposing?
We could play and have it decided before Sunday morning then everyone would be satisfied. Not sure if it is possible but if not then it’s going to be coin flip or option offered by Tucker.

Smitty,
I told u I'm good either way. Fuck it don't play any games just flip the coins twice and seed that way. Problem solved.
U should either play 2 games or none at all.
The winner of this is just going to get their ass kicked by Crowe anyway, lol.

We don't have permits for anything except Sunday mornings.

With three teams, one team has to be singled out no matter what. In the coin flip, all teams have an equal shot of being eliminated. Equal being the key word (all teams are 14-14, all teams are 2-2 against each other).

In the tournament idea, one team is chosen with cards (same as the coin flip) and they get a bye.

Then the other two have to play a game. Then play the team with the bye. I know "it's settled on the field" but one team still has a bye which they earned by flipping coins or picking cards.

Again, flip the coins. One team is upset the other two settle it on the field and it is one less game for everyone to schedule, wait for, get tired before a three game series.

Crowe Bar would be the only team that really would get a major inconvience on a, the field issue and 2, the time difference. So I am proposing that if crowe and the league give us 1 hr delay start on Sunday...we would oblige to use a neutral field and then travel to them. Again we are asking for 1 hr and the rest of the league can start at 10am

DO THE CARDS LIKE TUCK SAID! START TIME AT 8. DO A ONE AND ONE COUNT LIKE FALL BALL SO THE GAMES GO FAST AT THE SAME FIELD. WINNER SHOOTS UP TO PLAY CROWE. WE COULD ALL STILL START AT 10-10:30. THATS THE BEST I CAN COME UP WITH BENDING THE RULES A BIT!

I'm with you Juice. Pretty much the same thing I said yesterday to Smitty, let the play in game be at a neutral field at 8:30 and then after the game the winner goes to Ravenwood. And the game starts at 10:15 or 10:30 so no one's being rushed.

Ricky, you dont get out of bed until 940 and arrive at field about 958.....and then hit 3 grand slams, ...so, show at at 830, take bp , do laps, jumpin jacks, pushups , smoke a couple of cigs and maybe just maybe getting out of your routine of waking up late and showing up in your bathing suit translates into a 1-7 .

I just talked to OAWMF and he said start at 7 a. m.
He sleeps in his uniform on game days and is always ready to play at a moments notice.
He said we were going to smash every opponent this Sunday so nothing really matters.
Gopher agreed to set up tents and have a huge fire on Sat nt with beer and food at the field so we could do battle at sunrise. Just like they do 0n the battlefield.

About three way tie, the by-laws are clear. "in the event of a tie for eighth place a one game playoff will decide eighth place" no card pull or coin toss or even league official can change that. I'd like to suggest a mini playoff between AJ'S button mashers and ultra we could put the playoff back a week we haven't lost one game to rain all year so one week wouldn't impact our schedule to much. To have a playoff game at 8:00 am is a disadvantage to the eighth place winner. Why should this years eighth place finisher be treated any differently than any other year. We don't need a knee jerk reaction here the mission statement says to "promote competition and symmetry" it's not competitive or symmetrical to coin toss or schedule eight o'clock games that's what you get for finishing in a tie is not a good enough answer the by laws are clear and any change would need a weeks notification Also, any impact to other leagues or tournaments is also addressed "the CMSL's main responsibility is to the organization itself and is not concerned and will not take into consideration the concerns of other leagues, organizations or sponsors" in other words we worry about this league first before any outside leagues or tournaments. I was also thinking AJ'S could have the bye due to their having the best record against the remaining playoff teams and keep out the coins and cards
Thanks Ron senior

Cant push till next week. That would mean finals would fall on labor day which we wouldnt play. So it would fall on same week as the worlds. Which chances are the top two teams would be missing guys. Flip the damn coin

I'm new to the league but I know if I finished in the tie I wouldn't want it settled by a coin flip. We (gq) should have taken care of business but things happen. I think the 3 team playoff is the way to go with aj's getting the bye for the reason they have the best record against the top 7 (I didn't look that up I'm just trusting whoever said that before me).

Thanks for checking in mfon34....and, since that is prob the last post before the Big Meeting..I think most of us agree that we would like to see it settled on the field. But, their are many factors that go into the decision to decide who gets slaughtered by Super Crowe ..as always, in Ian WE TRUST.

Mtg. Adjourned. I'll let Ian clearly explain the outcome, but I feel like the managers came to a fair & equitable solution ... the 3 teams in question should be happy with the outcome as well. Great season. Now it's time to dig deep & see who's really hot what it takes when it matters .. the middle seeded teams have some great matchups. I wish I could watch all the games, but instead I'll be leading my warriors into battle vs The infamous Rock Junkers. Anutha fun game. Bring the popcorn.

Best of luck to all teams. Be safe & enjoy the competition.

Has an 8 seed ever beaten a 1?

That would be a lot of pressure for the almighty Crowe team to fall to an 8 seed after seeing and playing against that roster this year.

This might be a Hoosiers moment for Coventry Softball.

"I'll make it"
