| Davey Zaminski was so fast Wednesday night that even his postrace photo was a blur, as the diminutive shortstop blew away the rest of the field in round one of the 5th Annual Micah J. Aumen Invitational Race For the Cure Busch Cup Memorial Open. Before the race, a moment of silence was observed by all 3 fans in attendance for Aumen, the short-track master and namesake for the event, who could not attend due to a catastrophic toe injury suffered when he dropped a Rita's Italian Ice cup on his 5th metatarsal over the weekend. When the racing got underway, a field of 8 brave souls took to the winged sprinters in the preliminary race. On an extremely slick track, second-row starter Scott Meckley got around Alex Emlet at the start, then held off a determined Zaminski to take the opener. Zaminski settled for second and Matt Martin came home third. After that, the official results are murky as spinning cars littered the raceway. Dan Shafer brought out the first caution of the night when he spun and was collected by a violent t-bone from Emlet, whose actions got him a stern warning from the pit area. Joe Murren also spent considerable time facing backwards, while Dave Z. Sr. and Larry Baumgardner went virtually unseen. The 8 warriors then ventured to the Hornets for the championship race. None of the competitors were prepared for the slick road course and it showed as the drivers struggled in the early laps. The front row of Meckley and Z Sr. led the first circuit before Baumgardner quickly joined the fray. Martin found himself backwards early and often. It appeared that he had car troubles, but he assured his fans later that it was solely driver error that caused him to suck. Murren was struck in the face by a piece of rubber off of Meckley's machine at one point, causing eye irritation that no one had ever seen before. Our guess is it will take a while for that to clear up. Shafer and Emlet were formidable, but were too busy looking for the girl with the cell phone stuffed between her breasts to focus on driving. Meanwhile up front, Meckley and Baumgardner battled wheel to wheel for a few laps, but the young Zaminski came from nowhere and quickly reeled them in. Once Zaminski got past Meckley and Baumgarder with a power move to the outside, it was all over as he lapped almost the entire field. Meckley came home second and Baumgardner settled for third. "The outside was the place to be," said Zaminski from victory lane. "All those idiots were trying to slide along the inside, but the outside was the fastest way around. You didn't have to be as smart as Mitch to figure that out."
