Sunset boys’ soccer wins District 16-5A title over Varela in double OT

The Sunset boys’ soccer team won the District 16-5A championship on Friday afternoon.

Sunset defeated Varela 3-2 in double overtime.

In the first half, the Knights were led by Danny Ponce, who scored 23 yards out from the left side.

Varela’s Daniel Foen then answered with a goal six minutes before the half to tie the score.

Fernando Hernandez assisted Eddy Pineiro with the second goal in the second half, giving the Knights the lead.

Dominick Dudley then responded by scoring a goal for the Vipers 20 minutes into the second half.

Varela outplayed Sunset in the second half and into the first overtime.

“In the first overtime, Sunset was able to take advantage of a quick restart,” Varela coach Mathew Flipse said.

Finally, three minutes into the second overtime, Jonathan Diaz put a 25-yard shot into the upper-right corner of the goal for Sunset.

“It was a world-class goal that you can only see on televison,” Flipse said.

Sunset improved to 13-3-5 and takes on Coral Gables on Thursday.

Columbus works overtime to oust Varela in boys’ soccer

Columbus soccer players began a “championship-style” celebration, running around and screaming with fans Thursday night on their home field.
Their coach Michael Stewart shouted “we haven’t won anything yet.”
Stewart shouldn’t be faulted for wanting his team to remain focused.
But it’s hard to blame the Explorers for taking a moment to relish what they have accomplished so far.
Fresh off winning its first district title in 25 years, Columbus secured its first regional playoff victory since 1998 and only its second ever with a dramatic 3-2 overtime win over visiting Varela in a Region 4-5A quarterfinal.
On a broken play near the Vipers goal, Eddie Diaz crossed the ball to freshman David Gunter, who then drove the ball into the back of the net with 3:01 left in overtime, sending the Explorers (18-4-5) one step further in the postseason.
Columbus will host Sunset on Tuesday in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m.
“I’m very proud of these kids because it’s a process that started three years ago,” Stewart said. “That season we had 14 freshmen and they’ve matured, and their goals are starting to materialize.”
Gunter’s game-winner came shortly after Varela drew and converted its second penalty shot of the match.
Senior Kevin Pizzolo scored both, with the second tying the match 2-2 with 10:29 remaining in the second half. Pizzolo’s first such conversion gave Varela its only lead early in the first half at 1-0.
But junior Stefano Dongo provided Columbus the equalizer with his first goal of the season.
“The two penalties were tough, but you have to be ready when adversity comes,” Stewart said. “This is our third game going to overtime, and luckily we didn’t let it go to penalty kicks.”
A few minutes later, senior Danny Del Rio gave Columbus the lead at 2-1 going into halftime.
• Region 4-5A — Sunset 3, Coral Gables 1: Sunset had Eddy Pineiro and Jonathan Diaz and Coral Gables didn’t, and that was a big difference in the Class 5A regional soccer game at FIU.
Pineiro scored twice and Diaz tallied once and added two assists to lead Sunset to the win over Gables, advancing the Knights (14-3-5) to Tuesday’s regional semifinal game at Columbus at 7 p.m.
“It was a combination of our two big threats up top [Pineiro and Diaz], and we made a formation change,” Sunset coach Jay Flipse said. “Diaz was on the left side, and we put him in the middle so he could link up with Pineiro.”
The plan worked as the Knights snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal by Diaz and one by Pineiro within a one-minute span halfway through the second half.
Pineiro, a Florida Atlantic recruit who has 25 goals this season, had put Sunset up 1-0 just 18 minutes into the game, taking a pass from Diaz and beating Gables goalie Daniel Rodriguez.
Gables (15-3-2), an experienced team that started nine seniors, tied the score 1-1 on a goal in the 29th. It came on a rebound off of Sunset goalie David Villegas.
Flipse, who won two state titles with Killian in the ’90s and two in the past decade with Sunset, was not pleased with the 1-1 halftime score or the Knights’ lack of possession.
“We were playing kick ball,” Pineiro said. “[Flipse] wants us to touch the ball. If we touch the ball, we win.”

• Palmer Trinity 1, Miami Country Day 0: Alejandro Rodriguez-Santilli goal. Claudio Wingartz assist. PT 16-4-5.
• Region 4-2A quarterfinal — Gulliver 3, Edison 0: The Raiders held strong through wet and sloppy conditions against the Edison boys on Thursday afternoon at Gulliver.
The first goal came on a header by Jesus Bolivar, who put one in off of a corner kick in the first half.
“The conditions weren’t the best to play in, but it was the same for both teams,” Gulliver coach Matias Asorey said. “They defend well. But our kids did well. We didn’t give them too many chances to score. With about 10 minutes left to go we were able to get the second one.”
With less than 10 minutes left, the Raiders (15-1-1) turned up the offense with goals by Alex Moztarzadeh and Luis Diego to move the score to 3-0.
The win sends the Gulliver boys into the semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Ransom Everlades against the winner of the Ransom/Coral Shores game.

The sting from falling one win short of a state championship still lingers on the Gulliver boys’ soccer team.
Gulliver moved a step closer to a second chance Tuesday night with one of its most critical victories of the season blanking rival Ransom Everglades 2-0 in a Region 4-2A semifinal at Ransom.
The Raiders (16-1-1), who lost in the Class 2A state final last season, will try to clinch a trip back to state Friday when they host Delray Beach American Heritage at 3:30 p.m. at Gulliver.
"This group learned a lot from last year and there’s some unfinished business," Gulliver coach Matias Asorey said. "The team is more mature and they know what it takes to get back to state. As much as it is great to play in front of a big crowd, we didn’t want to play for the crowd. The early goal silenced them and allowed us to play our game."
Adriano Castro struck quickly in the opening minute to give Gulliver a 1-0 edge and immediately establish control over the match.
With nearly 11 minutes left in the half, Castro helped out on another goal that was scored by Jose Novas.
"That first goal was important because it allowed us to get into the rhythm of the game and be more aggressive," Castro said. "It got everyone more hyped."
Gulliver nearly added a third on a couple of occasions as it continued to apply pressure to the Ransom goal.
Gulliver goalkeeper Esteban Sapentnizky kept Ransom off the board with a couple of key saves in the second half and recorded his 10th shutout of the season.
"Last year’s loss has hit everyone hard," Novas said. "Today was a big game, but it’s only one step to what we really want."
Region 4-5A semifinal - Columbus 2, Sunset 1: For the second game in a row, the Columbus boys’ soccer team earned an overtime playoff victory, defeating Sunset 2-1 in the Region 4-5A semifinal at home Tuesday night to advance in what has been a historic season for the program.
Two minutes into the extra period, Fabio Casteneda took a deflection off a corner kick and one-timed it off his left foot for the game-winning goal from just outside the 18-yard box on the far post.
“I saw them clear it out and I saw the open opportunity, and once I shot it, I couldn’t believe it went in,” Casteneda said. “It just felt like a dream. Seeing everyone run at me was a great feeling.”
Columbus (19-4-5) advances to the regional finals for the first time in school history in a season where the Explorers won the district for the first time in 25 years. They will travel to Weston to face three-time defending state champion Cypress Bay at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
The dramatic win comes after Columbus had just finished off Varela 3-2 in another overtime affair on Thursday.
“We’re built for that,” Columbus coach Michael Stewart said. “It’s the mental toughness of saying that we play till the game is over.”
Sunset (14-4-5) struck first Tuesday with a Mario Malpica goal off a ricochet from a diving save from Columbus goalkeeper Bryan Alvarez in the ninth minute.
Columbus responded six minutes later when Eduardo Diaz scored on a penalty kick after drawing a foul in the box on Sunset goalkeeper David Villegas.

Region 4-1A semifinal - Hillel 2, Palmer Trinity 0: Scheck Hillel Community School has been focused on a return trip to Melbourne since they walked off the field as beaten championship finalists last season.
The Hurricanes took another step towards a title shot with a 2-0 victory over Palmer Trinity in the Class 1A boys’ soccer regional semifinals Tuesday at North Miami Stadium. Hillel (17-2) will face Sagemont, a 4-0 winner over Highlands Christian, in the regional final on either Thursday or Friday. Palmer Trinity finishes its season at 16-5-5.
Hillel lost to Sagemont last year in the regular season before knocking them off in the regional final.
“Those were tough matches. We know they’ll be ready,” Hillel co-captain Benjamin Vaisberg said. “But we’re definitely ready too.”
After that regional final win, the the Hurricanes advanced to the state championship but fell to perennial power Tampa Prep the 1A championship game in Melbourne. With everyone back from that squad, there’s a singular purpose.
“This team has unfinished business, and they're not going to be satisfied until they have their names on that state championship trophy,” Hillel coach Ben Magidson said.
Not that Magidson didn’t see room for improvement after a first half that saw the Hurricanes unable to finish a number of clear chances as Albert Dichy and Daniel Furmanski helped create a number of scoring opportunities for Hillel. Dichy’s 12th minute shot found the side netting while Furmanski’s mazy run into the box ended with his shot being cleared by the Falcons’ defense.
All that changed early in the second half when the ball was laid back to freshman Alan Chocron who blasted it past Palmer goalkeeper Daniel du Feu from 25 yards to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.
Hillel made it 2-0 when Julian Ribak, who was a force on the wings for the Hurricanes all evening, chased down a ball that seem destined to cross the endline and cut it back for Daniel Moudaeb, who placed it past du Feu for the 2-0 lead.
“It’s not like American football when you can just say at halftime we’re going to shut down this guy or this guy,” Magidson said. “I told them they weren’t playing to their strengths, making crisp passes. They started doing that, and you saw the result.”
The Falcons’ best chance came in the 27h minute when Alejandro Rodriguez-Santilli attempted an overhead kick from the corner of the Hillel box. His shot was on target but right at Hurricanes’ goalie Isi Chocron.
“They were excellent,” Palmer assistant coach Rob Johnstone said of Hillel. “Their creativity and movement in attack was hard to defend. They’re going to be a tough team to stop.”

Region 4-4A: A huddled Fort Lauderdale soccer team chanted ‘never say die’ after a scoreless regulation and overtime in a class 4A regional semifinal. In the end, it was goalkeeper Lucas Fancello’s hands and Javier Salas’ shoe that kept the Flying L’s soaring with a 1-0 win in a penalty shootout (6-5) against Belen Jesuit.
“I was really nervous,” said Fancello, who saved four of eight penalty kicks. “It was the first time in my career that I missed a penalty (kick). It definitely got to me but I had to just keep doing what I do. I had trust in my team and we came through with the win.”
With the teams tied 5-5 in penalty kicks, the weight of the game was left on the laces of Javier Salas. Salas stepped back from the ball and shot forward like a rubber band, ripping the ball to the left. The keeper tipped the ball into the post but it ricocheted into the net.
“It felt great,” Salas said. “I was waiting fort the keeper to move. We train on them everyday. We go up and we were ready for it. They were knocking on our door and we were knocking on theirs.”
Chippy play resulted in five yellow cards in the second half and overtime. Facello was tested often and responded with fingertip saves, igniting the stands and sideline.
“The players were getting a little tired so what we were hoping for was to get through and to penalties,” Flying L’s coach Andre Reynolds said. “We did it before in the district semifinals and I was confident. It was very nerve wracking in the end and we made it a little bit hard for ourselves but at the end of the day we got the win and we move on to the regional finals. My goalkeeper did amazing.”
The Flying L’s (20-1-3), winners of 14 consecutive games, face Atlantic Friday in the 4A regional final.
“I just have to say hats off to them because they are a really good team,” Reynolds said. “They are well conditioned and well coached. At the end of the day, we got the win and I am very happy in my first season coaching them.”

Scheck Hillel’s boys’ soccer team enjoyed every moment of a historic first-ever run to the state championship match last season.

The Hurricanes have now learned how to handle the pressure of being one of the favorites.

Led by two goals from sophomore Netanel Silberman and a poised defensive effort from sophomore goalkeeper Alan Landau, Scheck Hillel held off Weston Sagemont 3-1 in the Region 4-1A final to clinch a second consecutive trip to the state semifinals.

The Hurricanes (18-2) had never advanced to the state final four in any sport before last season.

On Wednesday, Hillel will play either St. Augustine St. Joseph or Orlando First Academy Wednesday in a Class 1A state semifinal at either 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. at Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne.

“This is phenomenal for this school to go to state again,” Hillel coach Ben Magidson said. “This was a tough environment [Thursday] with the opposing team’s crowd supporting them in this afternoon game, but our boys rose to the occasion again.”

Silberman, who missed the end of last season’s state runner-up finish with an injury, struck in the 13th minute, booting the ball past the goal line off a cross.

Silberman later assisted on the second goal in the 30th minute, feeding junior Julian Ribak to give Hillel a 2-0 edge.

Landau made three key stops in the early minutes of the second half to preserve the lead.

But a foul in the box granted Sagemont its lone goal on a penalty kick by senior Bruno Paes-Leme with 15 minutes left in the match.

Hillel’s defense held off any further threats, however, and Silberman sealed the match with a long-distance shot that found the mark with two minutes remaining.

MELBOURNE All season long, Gulliver Prep boys’ soccer players used two words to describe a year-long mission: “Unfinished business.”

And on Saturday afternoon, the Raiders stormed the center of the field in mass celebration following their 5-1 dismantling of Orlando Bishop Moore in the Class 2A state championship game at Eastern Florida State College.

It was a year ago almost to the day that the Raiders suffered a painful 1-0 loss to Jacksonville Bolles on a late goal in the state championship game and had vowed to get back and get things right.

Even though they had to wait an unscheduled extra two days following their 9-1 mercy-ruling of Pensacola Catholic in Wednesday’s state semifinal due to weather postponements, waiting an extra couple of days after waiting 12 months wasn’t a problem.

“It’s finished — finally,” said junior Alex Moztarzadeh, who had a goal and an assist. “It feels so good to be on the winners side and putting on those first place medals and not the runner-up medals for sure.

“We just remembered that empty feeling last year of having to sit there and watch [Bolles] put their winning medals around their neck and take pictures with the championship trophy. Today was our turn to pose with that trophy.”

The championship was the fifth for Gulliver boys’ soccer program and first since 2006. Gulliver also won titles in 1992, ‘99 and 2000. The Raiders also became the first Miami-Dade County boys’ team to win a state title since Varela in 2008.

“It’s nice to say you’re going to come back the next year and win the state championship, but it’s something that’s very hard to do,” said Gulliver coach Matias Asorey, whose team finished 22-1-1. “So, every time we played a team, we were the big name on their schedule.

“I give these kids a lot of credit. They played hard all season long, the fact that they got themselves back in this position and performed says a lot about the group and the kids that we have.”

Asorey watched as his players struggled for most of the first half, creating virtually no scoring chances while fending off a couple of Bishop Moore opportunities thanks to a couple of nice saves by Gulliver keeper Esteban Sapentnizky.

Just before halftime, Andy Alvarez knocked a corner kick dead center into a pile of players. When Bishop Moore keeper Alex Uribe couldn’t handle it, Zane Van de Put got his foot on the loose ball and kicked it in for a 1-0 lead.

“There was a corner, and we do this play where we make like a little pick so I could be free,” said Van de Put. “The first ball I missed it, but then I saw it hit off a player and the ball came right back to me and I put it away.

“When we went into the locker room we were all screaming and pumped up and said this was our moment and felt really good that we were going to get it done.”

Nine minutes into the second half, Moztarzadeh got free down low and fired a shot at Uribe who stopped it but the rebound went right to Alvarez who knocked it in for an all-important second goal.

“I started feeling comfortable after the second goal,” said Asorey. “Not because of the score, but because of the way we were playing. I knew that once we started possessing the ball and moving it quickly, it’s very difficult for a team to bounce back from that.”

With 22:36 left, Asorey watched the slam-dunk goal when Moztarzadeh knocked one home off an assist from Lou Diego to make it 3-0.

Even though the Hornets (26-5-1) scored with just under 18 minutes left to make it 3-1 and get their fans momentarily excited, the excitement last for all of 90 seconds as Diego took a perfect centering through pass down the middle from Alvarez and easily beat Uribe to make it 4-1 with 15:53 left.

Jesus Bolivar scored with nine minutes left to complete the scoring.

“We were struggling in the beginning of the game to find the offense we were looking for to attack and that goal just before halftime really helped us,” Asorey said. “In fact it really changed the game.

“We came out in the second half a lot looser and we were able to start playing our style and I think once we got into a rhythm, and that was the difference.”

And as postgame interviews with players concluded, Alvarez walked off with one lost comment.

“It’s done,” he said. “Business is finished.”
