| Hi! My son will be the new to the league (he is 6) and I am wondering what the recommend shin guards are and if we need to purchase cleats for his age group? Thanks!

| Jennifer,
That is great - welcome to Old Allegheny Soccer.
As to cleats and shin guards - both are necessary for your son. We don't have an official policy on the type of shin guard.
First thing I would recommend is to get shin guards that are National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) approved.
As to style of shinguard, I would suggest the 'sock' type of guard. When my daughters played, those were the type that tended to slip the least. You might also want to look at types that give better ankle protection.
You can go to most sporting goods stores and find these types of shin guards.
A final comment on cleats - they need to be non-metallic. You can spend a ton on cleats - but at this age, I would not do that as they will quickly outgrow them....

| Jennifer,
If the 'sock' type isn't right, look at the ones that have the strap on the bottom. Those work well too. For this age group, I would steer clear of the 'slip in' or the top strap type of shin guard.
Hope this helps...
