| Coral Gables has reestablished itself as one of the top boys’ soccer programs in Miami-Dade County over the past four seasons. The Cavaliers scored one of their biggest wins in that span Wednesday afternoon. Santiago Perez’s golden goal in the eighth minute of double overtime lifted Coral Gables to a 1-0 victory in a District 15-5A semifinal over Columbus — ousting the reigning Class 5A state champions from the playoffs. Gables goalkeeper Danny Rodriguez recorded his ninth shutout, and Kevin Gonzalez assisted on the winning goal. Columbus (17-4-3) won its first GMAC tournament championship last week, yet Coral Gables (15-2-2) will advance to the regional playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. The Cavaliers first must face Reagan in the district championship match Friday at Traz at 7 p.m. The top-seeded Bison (17-4-1) beat South Miami 4-2 in the other semifinal. “It’s not often a coach gets to witness their kids giving 110 percent,” Gables coach Joey Hudak said. “The fight and the will that these kids have shown all season long, is finally paying off. It’s great to watch.” ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ MORE BOYS’ SOCCER
District 16-2A semifinals: Gulliver is headed back to the state tournament for a record 29th consecutive year after beating St. Brendan 7-1. The Raiders (12-1-1) will play host to Westminster Christian (12-3-2) for the district title on Friday. Both teams advance to the state playoffs, meaning Gulliver will have a chance to defend its Class 2A state championship from 2014. No school in the state has been to more consecutive state tournaments than Gulliver Jacksonville Bolles’ run of 27 straight appearances is second. In Thursday’s win, Alexander Moztarzadeh scored two goals while assisting on another. Andy Alvarez and Adriano Castro each scored and had an assist. In the other semifinal, Westminster Chrisitan had little problems advancing to the final with a 4-0 victory over Keys Gate. The Warriors were paced by Eli Medder with two goals. Ransom Reed and Joey Alamo each had multiple points with a goal and assist as Tomas Espinal and Nico Lopez combined for the shutout.

With the smallest bit of momentum, Gulliver’s boys’ soccer team can put away the outcome of a match. Ransom Everglades found that out Thursday afternoon. In a three-minute flurry of goals led by senior forward Andy Alvarez’s goal and two of his three assists, Gulliver routed rival Ransom 6-1 in a Region 4-2A quarterfinal at its home field. The Raiders (14-2), the reigning Class 2A state champions, advanced to play either Miami Edison or Miami Westminster Christian in the regional semifinals Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Gulliver. Adriano Castro scored two goals, giving him 21 for the season, and Caesar Roman, Gabriel Vicente and Paul Bouaziz all scored one as Gulliver scored three goals in a three-minute span early in the second half. The Raiders are vying for their third consecutive berth in the state finals, and what would be a second consecutive state title and sixth overall. “When we get into a rhythm, we have a few guys up top that are really hard to stop,’’ Gulliver coach Matias Asorey said. “[Alvarez] has been big time for us all year either by scoring goals or assisting on them, and we’ll need that from him as we go forward.’’ Region 4-5A quarterfinal — Aquinas 3, Krop 2 (3-1 PKs): As is usually the case when a game goes to penalty kicks, one of the two goalkeepers is likely to be a hero and that turned out to be St. Thomas Aquinas’ keeper Trevor Walsh. Having given up the tying goal with 30 seconds left in regulation when he came out of the net and misjudged a deep throw-in, Walsh came though in a big way at Traz Powell Stadium when he made a pair of spectacular saves to pave the way for Aquinas’ victory over Krop (11-6-4). Aquinas (13-8-6) moves on for a much-anticipated rematch with district rival Cypress Bay in a regional semifinal contest next Tuesday. “For someone who hadn’t played in front of the net since he was probably 11, Trevor did a great job out there,” said head coach John Walsh who wasn’t sure if regular goalkeeper Zach Solomon — who sustained a concussion in the team’s district semifinal win over Western — will be cleared to play by next week. “We’ll give it another shot next week and maybe it’s Cypress Bay. They seem to be the class of the area the last couple of years so we’ll just go out there and take our chances.” BILL DALEY Region 4-5A Varela 1, Reagan 1 (4-2 PK): Gian Artuso’s goal in penalty kicks at Harris Field advanced the Vipers (13-3-3) past the Bison to the Region 4-5A semifinal. “I was just thinking positive and decided to go bottom left,’’ said Artuso of the winning kick. The first goal of regulation was scored by Artuso in the 10th minute. Minutes later, a header goal by Gabriel Oliveira evened the score for the Bisons (17-6-1). The 1-1 tie held through regulation and two 10-minute periods of golden goal overtime. The Vipers will face the winner of Coral Reef and Coral Gables next Tuesday in the semifinal. DARREN COLLETTE Region 4-4A quarterfinal: Belen 3, Pembroke Pines Charter 0: Junior Francisco De La Camara scored two goals in the first half to lead the host Wolverines (18-3) over the Jaguars (12-3-3). Senior Marcelo Hernandez had the assist on both of De La Camara’s goals. Hernandez also had the final goal, which came in the last minute of the game. The Jaguars’ goalie was positioned at midfield in an attempt to join the attack. But Hernandez got the ball, dribbled past the keeper and beat a defender to wrap up the game. Freshman goalie Alejandro Pujals earned the shutout, and Belen Coach Tanger Mendonca said the Wolverines will host the semifinal and — if they advance — the regional final as well. “It’s a great opportunity,’’ said Mendonca, whose team advanced to the regional semifinals for the third time in four years. WALTER VILLA Region 4-2A — Westminster Christian 5, Edison 1: Alanderson Francois chipped the Westminster Christian keeper to give Edison its first goal in a 5-1 region 4-2A win Thursday at Little Haiti Park. Francois’ brilliant touch was followed by Francisco Noel’s upper-90 rip into the far post to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 first-half edge. Noel would score again in the second half. James Barrios scored for the Warriors in the loss. The Red Raiders play at Gulliver in the region 4-2A semifinal. ALEX BUTLER Region 4-5A quarterfinal — Coral Gables 4, Coral Reef 3: A late goal by Daniel Velez helped lift the Coral Gables Cavaliers over Coral Reef at Milander Park. With the score tied at 3-3 with 12 minutes remaining in the second half, a free kick in the box landed at the feet of Velez, who fired a shot into the upper-right corner of the goal for the game-winner. JOEL DELGADO Region 14-5A semifinal — Cypress Bay 3, Flanagan 1: Nicholas Arboleda scored two goals and added an assist to lead Cypress Bay past Flanagan in Weston. Arboleda scored his first goal five minutes into the match. Fernando Ramirez raced down the right wing and centered the ball to Arboleda, who was standing at the top of the goal mouth and delivered a right-footed shot past the Flanagan goalkeeper for an early 1-0 advantage. “It was important that we took control of the game early and play aggressive,’’ Arboleda said. “We kept the pressure on and wanted the ball to stay on their end of the field.’’ Said Cypress Bay coach Colin Ilgner, “We are getting to our peak performance at the right time. We came back from winter break a little sluggish, but we are playing much better right now.’’ The Lightning (16-1-2) will host St. Thomas in a quarterfinal match Tuesday night at 7 pm. Cypress Bay won both previous meetings against the Raiders this season, including the district championship game. Flanagan closes its season at 10-4-7. SCOTT SALOMON Region 4-4A quarterfinal — American 1, Krop 0 (4-2 PKs): After 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, who would survive and move on and who would go home between American and Mater Academy at Traz Powell Stadium came down to penalty kicks. And fortunately for head coach Richie Pelaez and his Patriots players, their goalkeeper, Jacob Velez was up to the task as he made two tremendous diving saves, one to the right and one to the left, as American won the shootout. The win advances the Patriots (18-2-1) to next week’s regional semifinals where they will travel south to take on Belen Jesuit at Belen on Tuesday afternoon. “Survive and advance, that’s what playoff soccer is all about,” said Peleaz. “There are no guarantees, you have to do whatever you have to do and if it’s PKs, then that's what you do. “Nothing is given to you at this time, everybody wants it and Mater played well, so give credit to them. “We were a little unlucky with those two shots in overtime, but Jacob came through for us in a big way.” The two shots Peleaz referred to were a pair of Patriot shots just 30 seconds apart in the second overtime, the first by Mathew Vargas, the second by Enzo Vinuesa that doinked off the left post and crossbar, respectively, that would’ve won it. “Half the battle is having a keeper with plenty of confidence and that’s big at this time of year,” said Pelaez. “We entered the shootout with plenty of confidence.” Mater, which was competing in only its second-ever regional game, finished 13-5-5. | The Doral Academy boys’ soccer team has learned to trust in its skill. And why wouldn’t it? The Firebirds rolled into Tuesday night’s Region 4-3A semifinal clash with Plantation American Heritage with its best record in school history and a top-10 national ranking — also a first for the rising program. So even after seeing several scoring chances go by the wayside, Doral knew it was a matter of time before it seized the advantage. It finally did in the 49th minute of the second half when Lucca Barbaris angled in a rebound off a deflection for the eventual game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Heritage at home. “It was a good effort by Jordy sending the ball in, and everyone crashed the middle [of the goal],” said Barbaris, a junior who has 15 goals this season. “I was fortunate to be able to put it away.” Doral (23-1-1), ranked No. 9 nationally by the National High School Soccer Coaches Association of America, will host Immokalee on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Region 4-3A final. With one of its most signature wins in its program’s history coming against fivetime state champion American Heritage (15-3-3), the Firebirds clinched their first berth in the regional final round since 2007 and the second in school history. A Doral victory Friday would secure its first trip to the state final four. “We created many more chances than they did and could have had more goals, but we punished their defense right away,” Doral Academy coach Pamela McDonald said. “These guys have been unbelievable all season, and we scheduled the best teams in Dade and Broward to prepare them for games like this.” Barbaris’ goal came off a feed from senior Jordy Elera following a scramble that drew Heritage sophomore keeper Jared John away from the goal. Heritage tied the score in the 33rd minute when Mikael DaSilva controlled a high-bouncing ball and looped it past Doral goalie Roberto Gatica. Gatica and John each stopped plenty of shots and broke up scoring chances for their respective sides. Doral got one past John early when sophomore Felipe Ospina scored in the ninth minute, kicking home a ball that deflected off a Heritage defender.
l Region 4-2A semifinal — Gulliver Prep 3, Edison 0: With its sights clearly set on defending a state title it captured a year ago, host Gulliver Prep turned in a solid performance as the Raiders shut down a talented and upset-minded Edison. Gulliver (15-1-1) will look to punch its second ticket in a row to the state final four on Friday when the Raiders play host to American Heritage- Delray at 3:30 in a regional final. Having their best season in a long time, the Red Raiders (18-4-1) came out with plenty of energy and had a few early chances but coudn’t score. Eight minutes before halftime, Andy Alvarez rifled a perfect free kick from the sideline in front of the net that Nick Megaloudis headed in to give Gulliver the lead at halftime. “We knew coming in that they [Edison] had a couple of kids up top that could score goals so what we wanted to do was stay defensively sound, try to get the first goal and knew if we could get the second or third goal that they would more or less become disorganized and that would be our opportunity,” said Gulliver coach Matias Asorey, who got his wish when, three minutes into the second half, Alvarez headed in a perfect corner kick from Alex Moztarzadeh to make it 2-0. With the game wrapped up, Moztarzadeh scored with less than a minute left on an assist from Kevin Hidalgo to complete the victory. BILL DALEY
Region 4-1A semifinal — SLAM Academy 1, Scheck Hillel 1 (SLAM wins 4-3 on PKs): In its first season playing in a district, SLAM Academy advanced to its first regional final and knocked off previously unbeaten Scheck Hillel, which had reached state the past two seasons, all in the same night. After 100 minutes of soccer, including two scoreless overtime periods, SLAM (15-5-1) downed Hillel 4-3 on penalty kicks after playing a 1-1 game in a Region 4-1A semifinal on Tuesday night at North Miami Stadium. Edwin McFarlane drilled the match-clinching penalty kick with a bullet to the left of the goalkeeper to bring his fellow Titans rushing him on the field. “When the athletic director hired me, he asked, ‘Can you compete at a district level?’ ” SLAM coach Daniel Chong said. “I said, We have to be thinking higher than that — thinking states.” The Titans will get a chance at exactly that on Friday night as they host Sagemont in a regional final at North Miami Stadium. Hillel (18-1-2) tied the score when Julian Ribak scored with 27:21 remaining in regulation. SLAM struck first Tuesday with a sixth-minute goal by Wilfredo Dilbert on an assist from McFarlane. DAVID FURONES l Region 4-1A semifinal —Sagemont 3, Westminster Academy 2 (OT): An overtime golden goal penalty kick by Marco Wehrhahn gave Sagemont a victory at Weston Regional Park. Wehrhahn also scored the final goal of regulation on a penalty kick when it was ruled that a Westminster player intentionally used his hand to prevent a goal. The player was issued a red card, and Westminster finished the game down a man. In overtime, Wehrhahn was fouled inside the penalty box. “I had to be confident in the side I picked and the first one was solid in the left corner and the second was power top right,” said Wehrhahn of his penalty kicks. Westminster Academy (18-4-1) scored minutes into the game on a strike by Elijah Thompson. Sagemont evened the score on a goal by Julian Mercado. The teams were tied at 1 at halftime. Westminster Academy went up 2-1 on a goal by sophomore John Kelley. That goal was followed by the red card and first penalty kick by Wehrhahn. Sagemont (20-4-4) advances to the Region 4-1A final to face SLAM Academy on Friday. DARREN COLLETTE
“House money.” That’s what Varela boys’ soccer coach Juan Monge calls it these days when it comes to his team. Two weeks ago, the Vipers were down to their last five minutes of the season. They trailed Ferguson by two goals in a district semifinal before rallying to win in overtime, and they kept their magical ride going on Tuesday night. Varela kept its season alive after senior Alex Coira knocked in a loose ball in front of the net with one minute left in the first overtime to give the Vipers a 1-0 victory over Coral Gables in a Region 4-5A semifinal at Harris Field in Homestead. With the win, Varela (13-3-3) advanced to Friday’s regional final, where the Vipers will play host to Cypress Bay at Harris Field at 7 p.m. “This is the way we’ve been doing it all season. It’s almost like we’re playing on house money right now,” Monge said. “We were down to our last five minutes against Ferguson a few weeks ago, and here we are still playing. It was a tough, hard physical game, and it feels great to be moving on. Now we want to keep it going.” After 80 minutes of scoreless soccer that saw the game get extremely chippy with a dozen yellow cards (six apiece) and even prompted officials to stop the game at one point in the second half to talk to both coaches and athletic directors, Varela was awarded a throw-in from the corner flag two minutes before the end of the first overtime. Eric Viaud made a strong toss that landed in front of the net, and when Gables keeper Daniel Rodriguez couldn’t find the handle, Coira got to it before Gables defenders and rifled it home for the game-winner. “It was a great throw-in, and we always practice one flick and running back post in case the defender messes up, and that’s what happened,” Coira said. “This was a tough, physical game, but it feels great that we found a way to come out on top.” Gables (17-3-3) thought it had taken the lead in the game’s 27th minute on a Daniel Velez goal, but a late offsides whistle as the ball went in the goal nullified the score
l Region 4-4A semifinal — Belen 2, American 1: Belen Jesuit’s boys’ soccer team showed its resilience once again, outlasting American for a home victory in a Region 4-4A semifinal at de la Cruz Stadium. Francisco de la Camara continued to produce for the Wolverines (19-3) as he scored another goal, and along with Mateus Tordin’s goal, lifted Belen to the regional finals for only the third time in school history. Belen will try to clinch its first trip to the state final four since 2011 and second berth when it either travels to Port St. Lucie or hosts Palm Beach Lakes Friday in the regional finals. American (18-3-1), a district champion and GMAC tournament runner-up this season, made its fifth regional semifinals appearance in the past six seasons. ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ

| Cypress Bay 5 Varela 1
Freshman Mateo Pieschacon, starting because of an injury to a teammate, snapped a 1-1 tie with his fifth goal of the season, and the Cypress Bay boys’ soccer team went on to rout Varela 5-1 in the Class 5A regional final. The Lightning (14-1-2) advanced to next week’s state semifinals against an opponent to be determined. This will be Cypress Bay’s first trip to state since the Lightning completed a three-peat of titles in 2013. Colin Ilgner, who is in his first year as Cypress Bay’s coach, said a hamstring injury to leading scorer Franco Masscesni opened the way for Pieschacon to start. “We said, ‘Mateo, this is your time,’ ” Ilgner said of his only freshman starter. “Mateo has composure, but I have to get under his skin sometimes to have a little more fire. Technically, he is very good.” Cypress Bay’s Luis Perez got the game’s first goal, and Varela’s Gian Artuso tied the score with 19:08 left in the first half. Pieschacon’s goal with 9:29 left in the first half put Cypress Bay up for good 2-1, and the Lightning got three second-half goals to put the game away. Two of those goals were by Nicholas Arboleda, who has been on a roll of late with eight markers in his past six games. The final goal was perhaps the most artistic one of the night as Adrian Perez, with a defender in front of him, blasted a shot to the upper- far corner. Varela coach Juan Monge said his team missed an early opportunity that he felt could have made a difference. He also said Varela (10-3-3) had a speed advantage with its forwards against Cypress Bay’s defenders but could not exploit the matchup. Still, he had praise for Cypress Bay. “I think the state title will stay in South Florida,” said Monge of Class 5A, which was won last season by Miami Columbus. “[The Lightning] have a lot of skill
SLAM Charter School’s students didn’t waste any time getting ready to rush the field at North Miami Stadium to celebrate Friday night. Much like it hasn’t taken the Titans’ boys’ soccer team long to become one of Miami-Dade County’s top teams. SLAM Charter, a school in its third year of existence located near Marlins Park, clinched its first trip to the state final four in any team sport following a 4-1 win over Weston Sagemont in the Region 4-1A final. “This feels amazing, and we’re very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish on this team,” Edwin McFarland said. “We just want to keep this up and keep working hard.” On the strength of four goals combined from McFarland, Caleb Acosta and Wilfredo Dilbert, and another stellar goalkeeping performance from Jefry Padilla, the Titans (16-5-1) reached state in only their second varsity season and first year competing in a district. “We try to keep the game going as fast as we can,” Acosta said. “The coaches always tell us to go out there hard and make the best of every play out there.” Sagemont (20-5-4) lost in the regional-final round for the fourth consecutive season but persevered despite injuries to several key players. SLAM Charter will play Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic in a Class 1A state semifinal at Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne on Wednesday, likely at 12:30 p.m. The Titans, who are still developing several of their sports programs, won District 16-1A and rolled through the regional playoffs with impressive wins, including a shootout win Tuesday against Scheck Hillel, which had advanced to state the previous two seasons. SLAM does not have a home stadium, often playing its games this season at Kendall Soccer Park and usually conducts its practices at the fields near Marlins Park. “This team has a great bond,” SLAM coach Daniel Chong said. “We’ve had some road trips that have really helped this team get to know each other and really made things a lot easier for them this season.” l Region 4-3A final — Immokalee 1, Doral Academy 0: Doral Academy coach Pamela McDonald hoped she would be giving her Firebirds a pump-up speech for their first trip to states. Instead, she had to speak in the past tense when telling them how successful their season was, consoling her players — most of them shedding tears — after a goal by Ulises Soto with 3:40 remaining lifted visiting Immokalee in a battle of nationally ranked teams. Doral (23-2-1) was on the attack persistently in the second half, but on one of the missed opportunities, Immokalee (20-3-3) broke away on a counter attack and Yves Gomez delivered a perfect cross from deep in the corner, allowing Soto to one-time it off his left foot into the net. “They got that one strike and put it away. I’ll give it to them,” said senior Christian Cervantes, who rose up and said some encouraging words to his teammates following his final high school game. “This team deserved so much more. I had to show my appreciation because, no matter what, they’re a family to me.” Doral was ranked ninth nationally by the National High School Soccer Coaches Association of America with what McDonald called the best team in its history. DAVID FURONES l Region 4-4A final — Palm Beach Lakes 2, Belen 1 (OT): Belen was less than four minutes away from joyfully bouncing off its home field and heading to the state semifinals for just the second time in school history. But instead of that, there was only heartbreak for Belen. Auner Escobar scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead Palm Beach Lakes (17-0-3) to the victory over Belen (19-4). Escobar’s golden goal with 5:40 elapsed in overtime came on a penalty kick after referees ruled he had been pushed in the box. After Escobar scored, a half-dozen Palm Beach Lakes players sprinted toward a small but loud group of Belen fans. The players defiantly yelled at the Belen fans, who were separated from the field behind a fence. Coaches quickly pulled the players away, and there were no further incidents. Belen players, meanwhile, remained on the turf in dismay, many of them weeping. “I was convinced we were going to state — I was already thinking about packing our bags for the hotel,” Belen coach Tanger Mendonca said in Portuguese. “But we mishit our clearing attempt on the tying goal. “On the winning goal, in my opinion, [Escobar] was fouled outside the area, and it should not have been a penalty kick. We also had an early goal wiped out by an off-sides call that I do not believe was just.” WALTER VILLA l Region 4-2A final — Gulliver 6, Delray American Heritage 1: Four firsthalf goals helped power the Raiders to an impressive victory over the Stallions (21-2-3) at Sean Taylor Memorial Field. Gulliver (16-1-1) will go to Melbourne looking to defend last season’s state championship and make it to the state final for a third year in a row. “We know the formula to get to where we are, finish it off and repeat a state championship,” senior Alberto Poleo said. The first Gulliver goal came a breakaway by Andy Alvarez. Alexander Moztarzadeh scored the second goal. A blasted kick from just over 60 yards by Poleo that sailed over the keeper found the back of the net for the third Raiders goal. “That’s a shot I have been working on all season,” said Poleo of the long-distance goal. Adriano Castro scored the fourth goal of the first half. Poleo scored again in the second half to put Gulliver up 5-0, and multiple substitutes entered the game. The final Raiders goal came when Lucas Massolo put in a loose ball. The Stallions avoided a shutout thanks to a late goal by Frederick Gil. Gulliver will face the winner of LaBelle and St. Petersburg Catholic in the state 2A semifinal next Wednesday. DARREN COLLETTE

MELBOURNE — Looking to repeat as state champions, the Gulliver Prep boys soccer team did exactly what you’re supposed to do when taking on an inferior opponent. Score early and often and take them right out of the game. Such was the case for the Raiders on Wednesday night when they wasted little time flexing their superiority over an outsized and outgunned LaBelle team, scoring five first half goals and cruising to an 8-0 victory in a Class 2A state semifinal at Eastern Florida State College. The match came to an early finish when freshman Truman Gelnovatch scored with 8:10 left, ending it on the eight-goal mercy rule. And with that, Gulliver (18-2) is in its third consecutive state championship game, where the Raiders will be looking to repeatwhen they take on a familiar foe, Jacksonville Bolles, at 6 p.m. Thursday. The game will be a rematch from the title game two years ago when Bolles won 1-0. Gulliver will be looking for its sixth state title overall and second back-to-back championships since 1999-2000. Bolles (20-7-1) knocked off Melbourne West Shore on penalty kicks in its state semifinal game earlier. “The game plan from the beginning was to try and jump on them early,” said Gulliver coach Matias Asorey, whose team has now outscored its last four playoff opponents play by a combined 23-2. “Even though it took us a little longer than expected, once we got that second goal, things really started to get easier for us as we started spreading them out, and once we popped the third one in, we cruised from there.” Despite putting major heat on LaBelle goalkeeper Josue Orduna from the opening whistle, it took the Raiders 13 minutes to score their first goal, coming when the Cowboys (23-5-1) fouled Adriano Castro in the box. Castro rifled the ensuing penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the net. Four minutes later it was 2-0 when Paul Bouaziz took a perfect pass down low from Andy Alvarez and popped it home. Just over 17 minutes before halftime, Alvarez was in on the assist again when he fed Alberto Kike Poleo a perfect through ball and Kike Poleo beat a pair of defenders with two great moves to score. Nine minutes later, the favor was returned when Kike Poleo fed one to Alvarez down the left side where he knocked another goal past Orduna for a 4-0 lead. “We really didn’t know too much about this team going in so we just wanted to do what we know how to do, come out strong, put the ball in the net and not let them think they have a chance,” Alvarez said. “We’re playing as well as we’ve played all year right now so that’s big and now we need one more.”
