| THIS AND THAT l Norland’s soccer team recently completed its season with a losing record at 2-8. But the season was noteworthy in that the Vikings started a girl on the boys’ varsity team — Nicole Richards, a 5-8 sophomore forward. In order to play soccer for her school, Richards was forced to try out for the boys’ team. Norland does not have a girls’ team. Vikings coach Klever Estrella said Richards, who had no goals but four assists on the season, would make first-team All- County if she played against girls. “She has been playing since she was 6 years old, and she’s very strong and physical,” Estrella said. “She plays on a travel team [against girls], so she plays year-round. “I’m sure by next season, she will be contacted by college coaches.” Estrella said Richards is welcome to return to his team next season. But he said he would not be surprised if she transferred to a school that has a girls’ soccer team.
